Floratropia Le Ciel Review (Delphine Thierry) 2020 + Fragmentary Blue Giveaway

Why make so much of fragmentary blue

In here and there a bird, or butterfly,

Or flower, or wearing-stone, or open eye,

When heaven presents in sheets the solid hue?

Since earth is earth, perhaps, not heaven (as yet)—

Though some savants make earth include the sky;

And blue so far above us comes so high,

It only gives our wish for blue a whet.” ~ Fragmentary Blue by Robert Frost, 1923

Poets have long venerated the heavens and have drawn seemingly fathomless inspiration from them – as do so many amongst us. You don’t have to look far afield – Dante, Keats, Shelley, Blake have rendered them immortal. Admittedly, my first thought arose from a gorgeous poem by Maurice Carême entitled Les Anges Musiciens (The Angel Musicians): his unique view of the heavens in which angels play the harp continuously upon threads of rain; it’s always Mozart which tinkles deliciously in drops of blue joy. Last week my samples of Floratropia natural fragrances composed by perfumer Delphine Thierry arrived from the ever-gracious Indigo Perfumery: named for all the elements, Floratropia Le Ciel (sky) was the first of their eaux de parfums to capture my imagination, with its lofty ephemeral-yet-earthly delicate poignancy. I perceive it as a contemporary pre-Raphaelite painting rendered as wearable olfactory art.

Senior Editor and Paris Brand Ambassador Emmanuelle Varron recently acknowledged Floratropia amidst the marvelous natural perfume brands exhibited at Esxence Milan 2022; I cannot but agree heartily. The company has gone to considerable lengths to provide ecologically responsible and recyclable packaging – thus placing the emphasis back upon the jus, which is where it firmly belongs. At the risk of being seen as a Luddite, I adore an artistic presentation as much as anyone – but shudder when I smell mediocre fragrance poured into a fastidiously fancy flacon which costs the consumer a minor fortune; it feels like deception. How preferable, then, to enlist a brilliant perfumer and concentrate on beauty at a more affordable (and reconcilable) cost.

Floratropia Le Ciel manifests as a limpid celestial entity portrayed in softest hues of bleu celeste, azure, cyan, verdigris. It hovers above the wearer like beneficent grace: soothing, weightless, enigmatic. Angel wings consorting with a welcome mist of gentle rain, accompanied by a bevy of cumulus clouds afterwards. All the lissomeness of iris and carrot seed belong intuitively to precious ambrette, as they endow Le Ciel with a crystalline purity. Mme. Thierry exercises painterly precision as she weaves geranium, cassie and osmanthus into the fragrant fabric – any one of which might potentially tend to dominate Floratropia Le Ciel’s composition in less dexterous hands. Neither the sweetly woody and smooth New Caledonian sandalwood nor the heady coumarinic tonka bean overwhelms as the base notes; they seem to gather all components into their silky bosom with aplomb. Arachne could not have done better. Notes: Geranium Egypt, Carrot Seeds France, Ambrette Seeds Salvador, Iris Morocco, Cassie Flowers Egypt, Osmanthus China, Sandalwood New Caledonia, Tonka Bean Venezuela (in 100% natural organic wheat alcohol)

I look forward to Floratropia’s future compositions, having smelt L’Ambre des Fleurs, La Terre, Le Feu, Le Ciel and L’Eau (my second favorite!). I marvel at the beauty of each one. As it stands presently, there is at least one out of these five fragrances to suit everyone.

I enjoyed the description of how Thierry weaves geranium, cassie, and osmanthus with painterly precision. I live in Maryland USA.

  • Great review! I have not delved into all natural fragrances yet, and it seems like this would be a great place to start! NV, USA.

  • I love the notes listed, especially carrot seed, iris, and geranium, and I’m also interested by the brand’s focus on sustainability. Thanks for the intriguing review!

  • Such great words and photos but I can’ really tell what it smells like but based on the notes I would love to win. I am not as familiar with natural perfumes and would like to be. The packaging being recycling got my interest

  • Ida- your way with words!
Such a beautiful description of Le Ciel!

Karine (the creator of Floratropia) and Delphine Thierry (the perfumer) are quite a powerhouse team. Much admiration.

  • Ooooh iris, carrot, ambrette! Beautiful! Ive never tried a real all natural perfume (except stuff like essential oil blends you can get at a health food store), would love to try this. Sounds delightful.

I don’t think I’ve ever smelled a perfume with carrot seed as a note. That seems really intriguing. I’d like to try

  • I am curious about the notes in Floratropia Le Ciel, especially carrot and ambrette seed notes. Liked Ida’s description – “Thierry exercises painterly precision as she weaves geranium, cassie and osmanthus into the fragrant fabric”. Thanks for the review and draw. From USA.

  • I really enjoyed Ida’s description of the soft, smooth weightlessness of this scent and would love to try it! MN, USA

  • I love the concept of the brand and the perfume itself. I think brands not only have to focus on the presentation, but even more on whats inside. I think Le Ciel is a masterpiece for the things written in the review, and how this enigmatic and smooth perfume turns.

  • after trying thierry’s hima jobo collection i am so ready for more of her perfumes — she has an expert touch when it comes to layering. like many others have mentioned, the carrot seed note is a great draw for me – i don’t think i’ve ever had the luck to try it. thank you for the opportunity! IL, USA.

  • Sounds lovely and very spring-like with the carrot seed, iris, osmanthus and ambrette. I appreciate Floratopia’s commitment to ecologically sustainable sourcing and packaging. I’m not very familiar with natural perfume but the notes list and sourcing areas look amazing, Love to try it! I’m in MD, USA.

  • Angels playing harps in the heavens is a beautiful thought with all that is going on in the world lately. The notes sound so ethereal. I’ve not seen that type of recyclable packaging before. I am wondering if it is easy to pour into something else. I agree that I want the emphasis on the fragrance, not some fancy packaging. I was at Ulta yesterday and there are some over the top bottles with some very hideous fragrances inside. I thought “wolf in sheep clothing”. Thanks for the chance. USA.

  • Ida!!! ❤️❤️❤️ What a Gorgeous review!!! Such a soft & heavenly fragrance sounds perfect to wear to bed in the evening (as well as on a wonderfully lazy joyful weekend)! I’ve not experienced this brand, but if Indigo stands behind them, that says a lot! (We love Indigo in this house ❤️). Thank you for the lovely inspiration & wonderful opportunity! USA

  • ps – I’m just getting over Covid (my first infection & thankfully Super mild, never lost my sense of smell ), and this soft comforting fragrance sounds especially wonderful right now! I’ve missed you all over the past week! ❤️❤️

Thanks for the great review Ida.

This is a wonderful fragrance, super cozy and inviting of the heavens. I love the use of ambrette, carrot seed, geranium and iris. I also want to learn a little more about this brand because the sustainbiltiy aspect intrigues me.

    Cheers from WI, USA

  • It’s always impressive to discover what perfumers can achieve with natural materials. And I agree that I’d rather the effort and quality be put into the perfume, not the packaging, even though I’m all lovely presentation when possible.

Le Ciel sounds lovely. By the way—I’m not sure I can imagine the smell of “angel “wings consorting with a welcome mist of gentle rain,” but what a lovely turn of phrase! Beautiful review, Ida.

  • This line has such interesting packaging. It’s futuristic without going too clinical, as some seem to. I’m a fan of ambrette notes and would love to see how that fits into this atmospheric composition. I am from New England, USA.

I love that this brand is producing ecologically conscious fragrances. I also loved the way Ida described Floratropia Le Ciel. I appreciate a fragrance that is painterly and lissome. I also love anything with osmanthus.

I appreciate how Ida describes the skills Delphine Thierry must have had when using certain ingredients in combination with each other. Also, I appreciate discovering fragrance companies which are environmentally-considerate. I live in the U.S.A.

  • I’m always a sucker for osmanthus, as it is one of my favorite notes. The combination of notes sounds so interesting though, and so ethereal! I live in the USA. Thanks for the giveaway!
