As we officially enter my favorite season of the year, fall, it is only fitting to have found a perfect fragrant homage to the cool, crisp days where the bounty of harvest is praised and honored: Hima Jomo Autumn in Lhoka.  Hima Jomo  which is based in Grasse, France was founded by good friends, Vittoria Jiaxin Liu and Randry Glorieux, and is inspired by their love of the naturally wonderous Himalaya region.

Selecting master perfumer Delphine Thierry to create four scents that would uphold the rich cultures, landscapes and traditions of this region while utilizing a 99 percent natural pallete was an easy decision for the brand’s founders and creative directors, Vittoria Jiaxin Liu and Randry Glorieux. Delphine Thierry not only was open to the idea of creating scents based on the Himalayan landscape but, fully embraced the challenge by researching and learning about the various regions that make up this vast and breathtaking land. The founders provided a list of over 300 native ingredients to  the perfumer and together they explored the scent profiles  and their Ayurvedic properties when developing the first four perfumes. It will be evident to anyone trying these four scents that nothing was left to chance.  There is so much meaning behind every ingredient as well as the overall perception of wellbeing brought forth by these stunning creations.

While I truly enjoyed all four of the Hima Jomo “seasons”, I gravitate towards Autumn in Lhoka. Whether it is my subconscious looking for a fragrance to match the increasingly chilly New England days, or the fact that it is described by Ms. Liu as the deepest scent of the collection, Hima Jomo Autumn in Lhoka is a fragrance I knew I would I own as soon as I smelled it.  Based on the more temperate southeastern region, widely regarded as the birthplace or soul of Tibetan civilization, Lhoka is known for its agriculture, specifically barely; a staple of the Tibetan diet, used in several local dishes and drinks.

Hima Jomo Autumn in Lhoka is meant to celebrate the harvest festival where the farmers burn traditional Tibetan incense in the barley fields, dance around a fire, while chanting and drinking barely wine. It is a time for celebration and giving of praise for the bounty provided by the land.  he fragrance immediately sets the tone of the fall season with a wonderfully smooth mix of spices.  I often find saffron to be biting and overly medicinal however, under Ms. Thierry’s masterful hand, the saffron in Autumn in Lhoka is smooth and well balanced, providing a crisp coolness without being harsh.  By adding black pepper and cinnamon leaf there is a tinge of warmth in the opening, tempering the saffron, and reminding you of the diminishing warm days as we head into the heart of fall.

It is a compliment to the perfumer that my nose does not immediately pick out the individual notes of barley, bran or patchouli. Blended with incense and fir (a note found in all four of the Hima Jomo scents) I feel an overall sense of calm rather than a specific scent calling to be dissected. Autumn in Lhoka is clearly an incense fragrance but, not in the Arabic style commonly associated with labdanum, frankincense and myrrh. Autumn in Lhoka utilizes a traditional Tibetan incense, which can contain over 30 ingredients, to create a fusion of earthy dustiness, green herbs and whispery smoky notes. Hima Jomo Autumn in Lhoka is, at once, earthy and spicy and most importantly, grounding and meditative.

As the days grow shorter and cooler and the fields transform from green to gold, there is no better scent to bring forth a sense of peacefulness and appreciation for what you have than Hima Jomo Autumn in Lhoka.

  • Rachel! ❤️❤️❤️ What a beautiful review!!! I’ve been super lucky to sample both Summer & Autumn (the Best samples by Indigo – the best sprayers). Autumn is so lovely! The pine, Tibetan incense, and barley are so transportive! Thank you for this wonderful opportunity! ❤️

  • Hima Jomo brand was inspired by Himalayas which explains the first part of the brand name. Autumn in Lhoka seems like an appropriate fragrance for fall and it is a wise decision to include notes like saffron and incense as these are the kind of smells you do encounter in oriental cultures. I am in US.

  • I love fall too. And this sounds perfect for the cooler weather. I also really appreciate when I don’t notice each individual note but get an overall experience. In maryland.

  • Thank you, Rachel, for so descriptively capturing hima jomo’s Autumn in Lhoka. It is refreshing to realize that we don’t always have to pick out each ingredient to enjoy a fragrance.
And I love how you described how you FEEL when you wear hima jomo’s perfumes: “I feel an overall sense of calm rather than a specific scent calling to be dissected.”

I, too, find wearing hima jomo’s fragrances “grounding and meditative.”

  • Like Rachel, my favorite season is autumn; it’s a beautiful time of year. I enjoyed reading the process behind Hima Jomo fragrances, and Autumn in Lhoka sounds especially wonderful. Like Rachel, I am sure that Autumn in Lhoka would be my favorite since it captures the essence of autumn. I love the story behind Autumn in Lhoka. I can imagine the smell of Tibetan incense, barley fields, smoke from a fire, and barley wine; it transports me to a calming state of mind. I also love evergreens, so the addition of fir is right up my alley. Rachel describes Autumn in Lhoka as grounding and meditative, both adjectives I appreciate in a fragrance. Autumn in Lhoka truly sounds like a stunning fragrance. Thank you, Rachel, for the incredible review, and thank you to Indigo Perfumery for the generous giveaway. I sincerely appreciate Ann’s generosity; she is great! I am located in the US.

  • I am drawn to Ayurvedic scents, and would love to try them all, but experiencing the feeling of a Tibetan autumn sounds perfect for this season of gratitude and praise, with the incense and barley. Thank you for the draw.

  • This sounds like the perfect autumn incense for the autumn we are having in my home town right now: it’s unseasonably hot, so this lighter hand might be more appropriate than my heavier incense loves. It also sounds like it would wear right through the winter as a gorgeous mood!

  • I love the communities keeping their traditional harvest festivals. I love barley!! I’ve had barley tea from Korea which is delicious. Sounds like a lovely fragrance for autumn. Thanks for the chance. USA.

  • I love incense fragrances…and I love Tibetan incense. So incense fragrances that draws on Tibetan incense smells always intrigue me. This evocative review makes me very anxious to try Autumn in Lhoka. I’m in Oklahoma, USA. Thanks, as always, for the draw!

  • I’ve never been to Tibet but I would love to travel there through Autumn in Lhoka . Incense perfumes are a love and this one sounds like a different take with an herbal and earthy side. Peacefulness and gratitude are always welcome feelings. Thank you for the draw.

  • Your description sounds like a perfect fall fragrance. I imagine this on a cold hike through my local forest, catching resinous whiffs mixed with pine and dead leaves. Transformative!

  • The intriguing blend of incense, pine, saffron and barley, “grounding and meditative”. Love drinking barley tea and so curious to experience in a perfume. I love this review of this unique fragrance inspired by the Himalayan region. This is not something we come across everyday. USA

  • Fall is definitely, for me, the season of incense, amber and dark earthy notes. I do like the idea of natural perfumery and would love to experience Hima Jomo. Thank you for another awesome review and draw. Mich USA

  • Love the bottles! Vintage modern. Black pepper, saffron, and birch tar! Doesn’t get better than that. Sounds awesome. Thanks for the draw! In the US.

  • This sounds like a lovely Fall fragrance. Hima Jomo seems adept at exploring and utilizing the scents in the Himalayan forests. The incense, spice and conifer woods are a great combination with the earthy bran and barley. Sounds very evocative of the harvest season in Tibet. I think I would love this one too. MD, USA.

  • Thank you for the beautiful review. I can’t wait to try Hima Jomo Autumn in Lhoka. The Himalaya region is one of my favorite and I’m excited about perfumes inspired by native notes. ~Indiana

  • Hima Jomo is the most intriguing new brand I learned about recently. I really have to sample them. I love their esthetic and the back story. I didn’t know that the 4 scent represent seasons, but based on the fact that I love fall fragrances the most, Autumn in Lhoka will probably be my favorite too. I love that the brand wants to honor Tibetan ingredients and native plants. I also love fir so I’m happy to learn they include this note in all of their fragrances. This fragrances intrigues me based on the review because of its shafran and peppery notes and that Rachel describes it as a different incense experience, but still meditative and grounding. And I love those sort of fragrances. I’m from Illinois, US.

  • I just followed Indigo on Instagram!
This sounds like an interesting, very specific take on an incense perfume. This line: “earthy dustiness, green herbs and whispery smoky notes”, made me REALLY want to smell it! It does indeed sound like a great autumn scent. Thanks for this very generous giveaway!
    I’m in the US.

  • Great review by Rachel. I found very interesting that this brand is based on Himalaya scents and they use natural ingredients from the region. This fragrance looks amazing and would love to smell it. I love the fast that it is inspired on the harvest festival. I love incense notes so I think I would love this one.

  • It always intrigues me when out of the ordinary notes are used and blended well enough to not be offensive to the masses. My eyes are drawn to the barley and birch tar which are very unusual notes to be found in fragrance. At least the fall season now started is a perfect time to sample this Autumn fragrance@=! Thanks. USA

  • I have been lucky enough to spend some time in the Himalayas, and with the onset of Autumn weather I have found myself longing for the mountains. Growing up in Maine means I love the smell of pine, and I am always searching for a good incense fragrance, so I am dying to know what Tibetan incense might smell like. This was a beautiful review, and a very kind giveaway by Indigo – I would love to receive a bottle, and am based in the US.

I live in New England where autumn is very beautiful and celebrated, but I’d love to travel to Tibet for the harvest season. Delphine Thierry chose perfect notes to recall this season. The saffron and incense sound lovely together.

  • I love how Rachel’s review evokes a mood – Autumn in Lhoka sounds so natural and calming in a really spiritual way. I would love the chance to try it! I’m in MN, USA and follow Indigo Perfumery on instagram @ra7chel.

  • I would truly love to smell authentic Tibetan incense. What an incredible opportunity and treasure. I also love the idea a barley and cinnamon snd the coolness of fir. It sounds calming and meditative.
Thank you to the creator for the perfume and for your informative review.

  • I love fall, too – the darker time of year has a meditative quality itself that sounds like it’s honestly captured in Autumn in Lhoka. I’m very interesting in how the complexity and earthiness of Tibetan incense comes across in this perfume.

  • Regis Monkton says:

I appreciate Rachel’s description of this fragrance and of the Tibetan incense. This fragrance seems very appealing to me and I’d like to try it. I think that it’s interesting that barley, bran or patchouli are used in all of their fragrance releases: I like those ingredients. I follow Indigo Perfumery and Cafleurebon on Instagram and I liked the post regarding this fragrance (@regismonkton).

  • I’ve read about Hima Jomo fragrances a few times here and I’m always smitten with this concept, including the use of ingredients native to the Himalaya region, and the four fragrances’ overt seasonality. Autumn is my favorite season, so I’m immediately drawn to Autumn in Lhoka more than the others. I’m a little disappointed to hear the barley and bran notes don’t stand out proudly, because I was intrigued by a fragrance that framed those malty cereal notes front and center, but an earthy, spiced incense fragrance sounds beautiful and perfect for this season’s increasingly cool days. Thanks for the terrific review Rachel.

    I’m in the USA.

  • Michael Prince says:

What interests me about Hima Jomo Autumn in Lhoka based on Rachel’s review is learning more about Himo Jomo Perfumes how there fragrances are derived from over 99% natural ingredients and how their creative directors Vittoria Jiaxin Liu and Randry Glorieuxare inspired by the Himalayan landscape and teamed up with Master Perfumer Delphine Thierry to reflect that in Autumn in Lhoka with inspiration derived from the Harvest Festival where farmers burn Tibetan Incense. Being a huge fan Incense, Fir Balsam, and other spicy, earthy, and smoky ingredients listed this sounds perfect for Autumn. I am from the USA.

  • Such a wonderful review! I’ve never tried any scents from Hima Joma. I do enjoy saffron notes in a fragrance but I agree, it can be a biting note. I like that it is blended smoothly and doesn’t stand out sharply. I also like that this doesn’t sound like a churchy type incense, as you describe it as “a fusion of earthy dustiness, green herbs and whispery smoky notes. “. It really sounds so lovely and I’d love to win it. Autumn is my favorite season and it sounds perfect for this time of year.

Thanks for the great review Rachel.

This brand has been on my radar for a while and I am keen to sample them, now that the weather is getting cooler. I love that this scent is about a harvest tradition and is ripe with incense, barley, spice and balsam – a tribute to the bounties we recieve.

Lovely review Rachel! What intrigues me about Hima Jomo Autumn in Lhoka based on Rachel’s review is learning that it was inspired by the amazing Himalayan landscape and the rich culture of the area, specifically the Autumn harvest festoval, while also utilizing many native ingredients. While many fragrances are inspired by places I have yet to hear of one inspired by the Himalayas. Such a unique place deserves a fitting scented tribute! I live in the US.
