Hez Parfums Rue Oud

Rue Oud is the latest release from Hez Parfums, perfumer Hez Binkowitz has taken one of his most popular perfumes Bourbon Street and taken it into the night making it darker and more complex, like the bop of wild improvised jazz that catches our groove and locks you in for a wild adventure. Rue Oud is an extrait for when the lights go low.

Hez Parfums Rue Oud kicks open a door and bursts out into the night full of sweet and dark aromas that dance with excitement. Whispers of ouds resonate from darker corners of the street, while fruity notes twinkle like glistening lights. Nestled in Rue Oud’s rich darkness is a delicious smorgasbord of fruits, fresh cool pear and apples evokes the feel of a night breeze with raspberry giving a touch a sweetness like a first kiss. It hints at the promise of more as it expands as this night blossoms in front of you. Cinnamon sprinkles some magic into the mix giving a shimmer to Rue Oud. The textures of the pear cleverly foreshadow things to come just like the raspberry’s more floral side.

Rue Oud is true to its name, with an array of ouds weaving their magic throughout the composition. Perfumer Hez Binkowitz sourced these ouds from the amazing David Falsberg of Phoenicia Perfumes you should read his Profiles in American Perfumers interview here. Here there are three ouds at play with one revealing itself later. An Indonesian Wild oud conjures a beautiful earthy woody darkness, with a slight spice, it makes the cinnamon feel deeper in tone while exuding an aroma of aged bourbon barrels. The Thai oud enhances the fruity aspects of the fruity opening, almost stewing the apples and pears while giving a smooth blonde woody facet with a soft dankness, think steamy woods, that humidity of a wild summers night as you step down into a dark basement bar with lowlights and luxurious leather sofas and dark well loved wooden furniture. Rose brings a quiet elegance to Rue Oud, it’s there around you giving a beautiful flow to the wear. Creamy woods and vanilla further enrich Rue Oud creating a velvety rich smoothness, while tonka bean expands the cinnamon’s warmth casting a soft glow that illuminates the dark complex rich woods of the ouds.

Hez Binkowitz is cleverly expanding and illuminating the facets of the ouds he wants to highlight here in Rue Oud. The Indonesian wild oud really works wonders with the dark woods while the Thai oud cleverly makes the darker moist rich facets of tobacco come alive, you can feel the texture of rolling tobacco, dry yet moist with a delicious denseness. The final oud, another Thai variety known as Prachin, is beautifully crafted giving a sense of mystery. Prachin is one of my favourite oud profiles, it’s dark and rich, with a sharp funk, yet it also possesses subtle incense like smoky notes as it dries down. Here its sharper harsh facets are elegantly smoothed out with vanilla, tonka bean and sandalwood letting the Prachin oud imbue Rue Oud in its mysterious darkness, one that’s intriguing and alluring. Rich leather comes to mind when these ouds combine, dark and luxurious with a soft haze of bourbon lingering just above as if the cask has been opened and the angel’s share has been freed. That subtle spice captures the magic feel of that moment, it’s hard to describe but it’s here, making me think of the Jameson distillery when I did their tour a few years ago.

Rue Oud’s leathery bourbon feel lingers on my skin for most of the wear, it’s like you’ve found a great bar and wonderful company for the night. As the late dry down arrives the music fades and the party moves on. The Prachin oud, musks and vanilla star here. Hez Parfums Rue Oud shifts into a creamy musky allure that had me puzzled the first-time wearing Rue Oud. Its darkness transitions to a light with a soft smoky almost vanilla thick incense smoke yet there it still holds a dark char of bourbon on its heart. Waking up the next day Rue Oud’s soft scent has this seductive allure, it’s smooth, amplifying your skin with that subtle Prachin oud mystery lingering like a beautiful memory of this adventure. Musks give Rue Oud a beautiful ghostly feel, all its traces haunt your skin keeping things locked in your mind. Rue Oud it’s a beautiful elegant darkness, full of complexity and fun.

Notes: Raspberry, Apple, Pear, Cinnamon, Rose Absolute, Bulgarian Rose, Thai Oud, Indonesian Wild Oud, Tobacco, Bourbon Whiskey, Vanilla, Tonka Bean, Prachin Oud, Bourbon Vanilla, Sandalwood, Cedar, Grey Ambergris, White Musk.

  • With Fall approaching I’m always looking for interesting scents that shine during cooler weather. A boozy, dark and mysterious scent Rue Oud evokes Bourbon Street and the French Quarter and all its temptations. The various ouds that are utilized are intriguing: an earthy, woody Indonesian wild oud, the Thai oud and Prachin Oud that combine with fruity notes, rose, smoky vanilla and musk to create a complex symphony that lingers on the skin.

Being that the inspiration for this fragrance is Bourbon Street, I could only guess it would be a boozy fragrance. I like specifically since it’s set at night time, that the utilization of 3 different types of oud really add to the longevity and gritti-ness of the nightlife. Even though I don’t drink myself, boozy scents are some of my favorite because of the vanillic, benzoin and amber-y undertone they tend to have. The addition of musk takes that longevity to the next day like J mentioned with remnants of the scent still lingering in the air. Hez Parfums has done it again. I’m located in the USA.

  • If candlelit velvet lounges had a scent, it would be Rue Oud.

From the sleek top notes of pear, apple, and raspberry that feel like a first kiss in the sultry New Orleans night, to the precision blending of three distinct ouds, this extrait delivers refined boldness. Hez Binkowitz didn’t just create a flanker—he elevated the mystique of Bourbon Street and layered it in velvet, spice, and soul.

I’m currently wearing a fresh batch, and while the oud leads early, I’m looking forward to how the fruit and spice evolve as it matures. Performance is a confident 8 hours with a dignified trail. This one’s for grown folk with a seasoned nose.

What sparked my interest most in J’s review is the way J described Rue Oud as a darker evolution of Bourbon Street with deeper sensuality (and the fruits when many default to only Rose). That’s exactly what I experienced—and I had to leave a comment!

I’m located in the United States.

  • Bourbon, Leather, Oud x 3 and some sweet incense & tobacco, sounds like this could be my new favorite signature scent for the colder months. I have a handful of leathery scents but I never get tired of any of them and always have trouble deciding which one to wear. Thank you for the article J. USA

  • This sounds like the perfect fall fragrance. Darker, warm, but not entirely sheltered. Prachin Oud is one of my favorites, and this is an uncommon use of it — in a profile so definitively American. I’d love to give it a try & share my thoughts (and perhaps some decants) in my frag group. I live in the USA.

Fall is coming and I couldn’t be more excited! This scent sounds amazing like a fall, jazz festival with fruit trays, while friends gather round warmed in their leather jackets with a boozy cocktail! How fun! I’d love to experience this scent.

  • That’s a lot of oud. I appreciate J’s discussion on the various notes enhancing the three different ouds. I do find the notes reflective of New Orleans. I’m in the US.

  • Shelley Abrahams says:

I have a love of Oud and I am intrigued with the mixture of Ouds presented in this fragrance, along with the other notes. This fragrance sounds very rich and complex, fascinating.

  • I have not tried any perfumes from this perfumer yet but this one sounds phenomenal. I have been a huge fan of David and Phoenicia for years. His ouds, sandalwood, musks, florals are all phenomenal. I’m sure this Oud is gorgeous!
I am located in the U.S.

  • You had me at Jazz and Whisky. To darken things down with a variety of pods sounds promising, and since I like it woody, but not too animalic, I shall like this one a lot. I’m really curious about the fruits and would be happy to explore this transition. My favourite apple note is in Yosh’s König, with an entire different base of course. I’d love to win this to Germany, thank you for the draw!

  • As a lover of Ouds and a fellow New Orleanian I having been dying to get my hands on this fragrance by Hez. I already own several of his fragrances and received a sample of this one early this summer and absolutely fell in love with it.

  • Kristof Raemdonck says:

Wow, a rich leathery bourbon all supported by various ouds, each with it’s own fingerprint. What is not to like?
My favorite season is fall (and winter), not only the weather, but also for perfumery. This would fit right into my collection for the season!
I have visited the USA on many occasions, but there is no city that enchanted me like New Orleans. Here I spent many many night soaking up the jazz vibe with friends, always with a bourbon in my hand, because it felt right. I suspect that this perfume would bring me back many great memories and I would love the opportunity the put my nose on this!

Not here for the giveaway, but just wanted to say this is an amazing article for an amazing perfumer, and whoever wins this perfume is in for a treat!

  • This sounds interesting and I think it would be a great fall addition to anyone’s collection! I have never tried anything from Hez Parfums, but hopefully I will start my journey with Rue Oud. Thanks and good luck to everyone! EU

  • What I liked most in J’s review was the idea of Rue Oud as a deeper, more sensual version of Bourbon Street, especially with the fruit notes instead of the usual rose.
    Thank you! From EU.

  • Taking Boubon Street and making a darker and more complex new release sounds like a wild adventure. I am based in EU.

  • Nice review Mr. J. I haven’t tried Bourbon Street, but a nighttime version of that fragrance sounds inspiring. Sweet and dark aromas that emerge in the humid and warm night of NO. I love the fruity-floral top notes (that pear-raspberry duo) and spicy notes (cinnamon) give way to a spectacular collection of ouds from different origins (Indonesian and Thai) with their diverse nuances (earthy, soft, smooth woody) that honor a brand that is characterized by the highest quality materials. The ouds provide a rich leather touch. As night gives way to dawn, the finish is a smooth vanilla, but the aroma of tobacco also dawns on our clothes at the foot of the bed. I live in Spain, EU

  • A leathery bourbon with smoky vanilla incense sounds wonderful. I’m currently on the hunt for a nice oud focused scent and this combination of Thai, Indonesian, and Prachin sounds like it could be just what I’m looking for. I’m hoping to experience this soon! I’m in the USA.

  • I am so interested in exploring oud in more unique formats. I’m in NY and have been following hez perfumes and their recent creations. Very excited to sample this new venture

  • So many good things in one place here, the pyramid notes look great, the good vibes pictures and description inside the article, then also “jazz” added in any kind of form, sounds really good. I would love to sample this creation, thanks for the chance. I’m in the EU.

  • Joshua Kong says:

I’m already a big fan of Hez’s Bourbon Street, so when J described it as a darker and richer take I knew that this would be an enticing fragrance. It’s a hot summer over here in Texas so definitely would have to wait a few more months to be able to wear this but the combination of incense, smoky vanilla, and tobacco is one that never fails in the wintertime. Need to get my nose on this!

  • When I read this, I fell in love. Oud is not just a note, but an experience and when I see many varieties of oud together, it makes me exited. The fragrance seems so well put together it leaves me in awe. I like a nice boozy accord, for example in Pasha de Cartier Parfum. It makes a fragrance challenging but interesting. Vanilla is also one of my favorite notes and when it is combined with spices it makes a beautiful olfactory experience. Overall, this fragrance seems so intriguing it may leave me in tears. It sounds nothing short of life changing. I live in the USA.

  • Hez is a house I need to explore. I keep hearing about Binkowitz’s work sounds very appealing. Yet, it looks like his discovery sets are out of stock. Rue Oud seems like the perfect fragrance for going out in the evening. I think I would enjoy this. USA.

  • I am a beginner in the oud world, and I was interested to read about the different varieties of oud featured in Rue Oud. It is fascinating that the different characters of the ouds are used here to enhance the other elements such as the cinnamon/spices and the fruits. This sounds like a gorgeous combination. I am in USA.

  • Christos GX says:

This fragrance is described as an olfactive experience to remember, one that you can’t forget. The description about the night lights, the kiss, all those pairing with the experience of the night, feels like a masterpiece. I live in Greece, EU.

  • Really cool! Had no clue there were multiple types of oud and definitely sparked my interest. That being said the mixture of the three ouds sounds incredibly rich and complex. Love how the progression sounds and really fun read, thank you!

  • Rue Oud sounds like a perfect scent for the cooler autumn days. The boozy ode to New Orleans using different types of oud combined with leather, bourbon, incense and tobacco is a sophisticated fragrance full of elegant darkness
and complexity. I love Hez’s dedication to showcasing New Orleans in all its decadent glory.MD, USA.

  • foreverscents says:

Rue Oud is definitely going to be the fragrance I wear when I visit New Orleans for the first time. I love that there is a raspberry note in this fragrance as well as rose notes, to welcome–and maybe brace– the wearer to the darker notes that are to come. The three ouds tell me that this is a very sophisticated and well-thought out fragrance. It sounds dark, seductive and mysterious, much like New Orleans.
    I live in the USA.

  • I like how Rare Oud uses cinnamon to give the apples and pear a gourmand spice without drawing focus from the nocturnal, steamy agarwood. And the ouds are the star of the show here. I’m most intrigued by the Prachin, with its hints of incense in the drydown, and leathery tonality. I’d love to try this and get some more experience with strong oud fragrances.

    I’m in the USA.

  • I’d love to wear this next trip to NOLA (spring 2026). The perfect city for a ghostly feeling fragrance. USA.

  • livingston51 says:

I got a sample set of this brand and amazed by the quality and smoothness. I haven’t found one I don’t like yet. Just found your blog and I’m excited to read about indie brands and upcoming perfumers.

  • See….I need this!!! Feels like this may be the dark, mysterious evening scent that I have been looking for. With fall and winter coming I can tell this is something I would enjoy. Hez Parfums is a house I have recently dove into with my first two purchases being Banana Banshee and Brownie Points….I had to have more lol. Oud is one of my favorite notes and seeing he has used a combo of 3 different ones I just know it’s gonna pack the right punch. J then mentions the leathery bourbon and I just know that with the vanilla and tonka bean has me just ready. Now that apple and pear also has me just wondering how it all combines.

    I live in Dallas, TX

  • wallygator88 says:

Thanks for the dark, evocative feature! Rue Oud felt like stepping into a nocturnal jazz reverie—a burst of glistening pear, apple, and raspberry twined with spicy cinnamon, then deepened by layered ouds (Indonesian wild, Thai, and Prachin), creamy woods, vanilla, and tonka for a velvet-drenched nightscape. It struck me as both richly atmospheric and elegantly textured. I’d love to experience Rue Oud!
