Goldfield and Banks Island Lush is the third fragrance in the brand’s Botanical Series, following Silky Woods and Purple Suede (which received two of CaFleureBon Top 10 Best of Awards 2022). Island Lush was composed by young Givaudan perfumer Amélie Jacquin (she created Bohemian Lime, Dries Von Noten Santal Greenery and Rock the Myrrh among other perfumes).

An inside look into Goldfield and Banks’ Founder and Creative Director Dimitri Weber’s creative process:

“Island Lush was born out of a fascination with some logs I smelled in a dusty shed in Western Australia. They were being stored by the company that makes our Australian sandalwood oil, as they also produce oil using Vanuatu sandalwood. The scent was distinctly addictive, and I knew I had to express this beautiful partnership between Vanuatu and Australia in a perfume. With Island Lush I wanted to create a tropical perfume that celebrates the deep, spicy, and rich aspects of the South Pacific, rather than using stereotypical tropical notes like frangipani and tropical fruits. The Sandalwood we use in Goldfield and Banks Island Lush is grown sustainably.”  –Dimitri Weber, Creative Director

Vanuatu is an independent nation located in Melanesia, a Pacific Island and is 2,213 miles away from Australia. It is known for its beautiful landscapes, rainforests, stunning beaches.     Never in my life would I have known there were so many types of Sandalwood! I’d love to smell the Vanuatu sandalwood paired with the Australian sandalwood contained in the bottle as described by Michelyn. Steven mentioned also it has spices so I think that makes for a beautiful contrast. I’d love to win this fragrance! What appealed to me the most is the contrast between the sandalwood and spices.

    Hi! I’m so excited about this release. I have sought a nice sandalwood for Spring. After reading and watching multiple reviews, I decided to try G.F. Trumpet’s historic Sandalwood. While it’s pleasant, it’s a bit boring for my personality. I was smiling the entire length of Steven’s review; I am really curious about not just the scent and performance but also the tropical impression despite the lack of conventional accords. I am also especially impressed by Michelyn review, which notes not only the unique quality of the South Pacific Sandalwood but the fact the source nation is committed to sustainability and the environment. I’d love to win a bottle! I have Purple Suede and LOVE IT!

    What I really did not know was that there was a nation Vanuatu and that its far from Australia. Sandalwood is my favorite note, and I live that is one has nutmeg. Great job everyone I am following Indigoperfumery

There definitely is sandalwood in here, and I am delighted to see that it is sustainably sourced. 🙂 I agree with Steven’s review — it is a warm and spicy scent with a tropical, island vibe.     What really captivates my attention is the creaminess that he mentions. I don’t have a perfume like that. I just started collecting recently but only like clones. Can’t afford the real deal so to be chosen as a winner would be amazing

    In my honest opinion Stephen is the best reviewer on the platform especially when co-hosted with BFL (R.I.P).
    Sandalwood is my all time favorite note since I can ever remember. What appeals to me about this introduction and the review is the notes like Sandalwood, resins and leather/saffron being used to create a new perspective of a tropical frag.     South Pacific Islands amaze me, the isolation and how people ever settled there seem unthinkable to my mind.

    Goldfield and Banks always delivers great scents and Island Lush is surely yet another one. The note of sandalwood is one of my favorite ever. The vetiver also adds up to make it more interesting.

    I enjoy sandalwood fragrances when done well. It seems Island Lush goes for a different interpretation of Australian sandalwood than what we have seen in other fragrances. The composition gives a tropical vibe and spices play a vital role in the overall feel. I am in US.

    I unfortunately have not tried the botanical series, however I have sampled the rest of the house. I love that they use locally sourced ingredients from Australia, they have some very unique compositions. After hearing Steven’s description of it, I was even more intrigued once reading the note breakdown from Michelyn’s introduction and realizing how appealing this was to me!

    The idea of the woods and spices in a tropical type scent sounds delicious, per Steven. I know its not a gourmand/edible type of scent but I love woods much more than many scent profiles. The inspiration for this scent sounds like such a refreshing take on the typical coconut and plumeria perfumes in tropical scents. I am a follower of Indigoperfumery on IG. In located in FL.

    This was very educational for me. Sandalwood as a note, is one that I haven’t spent much time with yet. I appreciated learning how many types there are and just how precious it is.     It was the sandalwood and the overall uniqueness and the fact that Goldfield and Banks went a different route in giving this fragrance it’s tropical DNA. You can’t beat a fragrance that has a uniqueness all it’s own. I recently fell in love with White Sandalwood from this same fragrance house. I can only imagine what the sandalwood smells like in this type of fragrance. Also, the presentation, it’s simple yet elegant and beautiful.

    It’s amazing how a scent can stay with you and make an impression on you and you not even realize it. Dimitri Weber’s scent memory of “logs in a dusty shed” influencing him to create a fragrance that Steven described as a fantastic fragrance is a testament to that. I have been looking at this fragrance and then boom it’s a giveaway. This would be a great start to spring..     I was excited to read Dimitri’s comment regarding his desire to explore the rich and spicy facets of the South Pacific rather than the typical tropical elements, which are often, in my opinion, overdone. I was equally excited to hear Steven talk about the delicate saffron playing with the resins in the base. I love the soft, suede-like side of saffron and I imagine it working beautifully with the iris, while those gentle spices sing in the background.     As always, I enjoyed reading Michelyn’s introduction and the context and history she provides in her introduction. Enjoyed reading the Quincy Dimitri, though I must say the name Goldfield and Banks Island Lush can be a bit confusing, as typically tropical sounding perfumes would be floral, aquatic, coconut type etc. From Steven’s video review, it seems it’s more suitable for non-tropical climes. Loved Steven’s review for its practical description of the perfume. The bottle is beautiful and I love the sandalwood, spicy and amber notes.     This is my kind of beach fragrance. No coconut, tropical flower or suntan oil scent. This is the smell of the tropical jungle. Spices, vetiver and an interesting use of two varieties of sandalwood sounds like an ode to a lush South Pacific Island. Steve’s explanation of the sandalwood oil was fascinating .     This scent appeals to me because it seems so different than most summery fragrances. Like Michelyn said, it seems like a lot of summer perfumes are citrusy and light.     I’m familiar with all Goldfield and Banks fragrances, and If I have to rate my favorite ones:
    1. Silky Woods
    2. Southern Bloom
    3. Desert Rosewood/Island Lush

    For the record Vanuatu is archipelago , comprised of over 80 islands, 13 of which principal and dozens of smaller ones.

    For obvious reasons cultural ,and economic ties will retain consistent between Vanuatu, and Australia, but there are also quite a lot of tensions last few years , because of the the gigantic Chinese investments in Vanuatu, and the ever growing country dept to China , and Chinese corporations. It’s a political thing ,so I’ll leave it to such forums..

    It’s either some hidden notes , or maybe combination of notes , but I get a tropical fruit in the base , guava or something like that , and decent dose of iris.
    My opinion of Island Lush is in a way similar, but also different, compared to what Steven is getting. I do get most of what he perceive, but in different proportions. On my skin Island Lush is predominately well blended, very smooth and complex suede leather fragrance , and then comes everything else , the sandalwood , the guava , and the iris .
    Since I’m familiar with all Goldfield and Banks fragrances , and Domitry Webber obsession with sandalwood, i perceive some similarities with Velvet Splendour and White Sandalwood, the other two sandalwood heavy Goldfield and Banks fragrances , particularly the sandalwood and suede leather combination , not the same fragrances of course, still probably all share some ingredients.
    Island Lush is top-notch fragrance , no questions asked

I appreciate what Michelyn shared about Vanuatu (and their sandalwood oil) and Steven’s description supporting the uniqueness of the creation known as Island Lush.     I can definitely attest to the quality of Goldfied and Banks fragrances. I was fortunate enough to win a giveaway of Bohemian Lime previously and that is a fire offering for the Spring, Summer, and Fall. It’s a good indicator of how good Island Lush might be the Madamoiselle Jacquin also created that fragrance. Mr Weber’s inspiration for Island Lush is quite interesting. I admire how faithful the brand is to exposing the world to the beauty and complexity of Australian perfumery. Two notes that Steven highlighted in his review really stood out to me: ginger and sandalwood. I like how he points out that this offering goes in a different direction than the usual coconut dominated tropical scents. Appreciate the generosity of this giveaway.     I always try to buy locally, from trusted sources, especially the food, drinks , clothes and other amenities , The reason I think Goldfield and Banks carry out admirable business strategy by promoting the business as both local, and environmental friendly – smart, productive and allows local farmers to prosper , instead of buying all from mega- rich corporations.
    Marianne Butler Southern Bloom review, around 3 years ago sparked my interest in Goldfield and Banks, now Michelyn and Steven are doing the same thing.
    Judging by Michelyn introduction and Steve impressions, Island Lush is exquisite , mostly woody fragrance, where the Vanuatu sandalwood do work very well , together with some mild amber sweetness, leather, resins and spices.
    Silky Woods in my opinion , is the best Goldfield and Banks fragrance
    I’ll follow Indigo Perfumery right away

    The usage of local ingredients is a good idea, and a nice way to promote your business.
    As a small business owner myself I really like how Dimitri Weber hire , or work with local farmers , which is helpful for the community, and it makes him less dependable from distributors , and perfumery’s giants. I to try to do the same as much as possible
    Dimitri Weber notions, the intro and Steven take on Island Lush made me think of making Ginger and Nutmeg Coffee Cake, and walking around the, like Michelyn said beautiful landscapes , rainforest and stunning beaches of Vanuatu.
    I own two Goldfield and Banks fragrances, Silky Woods i, gooey modern gourmand , the smell is very similar to Caramel Pecan Cinnamon Rolls, and also Pacific Rock Moss .
    Appreciate the Dimitri Weber notions, the intro , Steven review, and the giveaway campaign.

    Really interested in the sandalwood notes in this fragrance and the mix with the pink pepper ! It’s also interesting hearing the story of how the fragrance was created – that visual definitely seems like this would be a heavily woody, musky, almost slightly spicy scent.     Weber’s comments on how Island Lush came to be are really interesting; there’s definitely a place for more tropical perfumes that avoid frangipani and gourmand blends in favor of spice and rich woods. I’m also happy to hear Goldfield and Banks is working with Vanuatu farmers to utilize sustainably-grown sandalwood. Thanks for the interesting introduction, Michelyn.

    Also, another excellent review from Steven. I like how Steven highlighted the unique, original nature of the central sandalwood here and the balsamic, spicy, and leathery aspects it’s paired with, as well as the overall weighty texture it has when worn. Like Steven said, I’m definitely a fan of warm, sandalwood, rich, resinous, spicy fragrances, and could use some island vibes. Will need to try this one.

    Goldfield and Banks is becoming one of my most favorite fragrance houses. My first scent was Purple Suede which I won here on Cafleurbon (thanks again!!). Aboslutely fell in love. I then went and purchased the popular Bohemian Lime. Fell in love again. Now we have Island Lush and once again I am sure I will be smitten again.

    Dimitri mentions the Vanuatu sandalwood that was used and Steven also mentions it so I know it is a very strong scent. The island tropical vibe that he mentions is something that I am looking for with trips and the summer time coming up. Sandalwood is one of my most favorite notes and I would love to add another fragrance from this house.

    This is kind of a different fragrance for this brand. I really like the focus on sustainable sandalwood. The movement from fresh and effervescent to a leathery, heavier style is pretty neat.

    It’s great to read that the government of Vanatau is promoting/encouraging farmers to use sustainable sandalwood.

    I’ve always liked the fact Dimitri Weber integrates a lot of regional ingredients , often for the first time, which makes him a pioneer in the fragrance community.
    Like most, my first touch with Goldfield & Banks fragrances was with the famous Pacific Rock Moss , their most famous fragrance. It’s fun and happy hot weather fragrance, but I have different expectations for Island Lush . Still South Pacific , but less fruity sandalwood fragrance, spicy and aromatic , and leathery

    Like in the saying “The home is where the heart is” , Dimitri Weber clearly found his home in Australia. By working with , for the most part Australian , and now the nearby Vanuatu ingredients , Goldfield and Banks are investing locally in a precious , and much in demand natural resources, sustainable and socially responsible move , while enhancing their own value.
    I’m glad Island Lush is lacking the “stereotypical tropical notes like frangipani and tropical fruits” part , it’s modern tropical fragrance, with nothing childish and plasticy about it ( frangipani often smells like plastic to me) . As usual top of the line quality only ingredients, well made , sandalwood from Vanuatu, leather , Steven feels dazzled , I have high expectations for Island Lush .
    There’s one Goldfield and Banks fragrance in my possession, it’s called Desert Rosewood

    I loved Steven’s introduction on Island Lush and Michelyn’s introduction on Dimitri Weber. I loved the founder and creative director Dimitri Weber’s quote, “I knew I had to express this beautiful partnership between Vanuatu and Australia in a perfume. With Island Lush I wanted to create a tropical perfume that celebrates the deep, spicy, and rich aspects of the South Pacific, rather than using stereotypical tropical notes like frangipani and tropical fruits.” Steven also expresses that atypical relationship of being called Island Lush with none of your usual tropical notes listed. Steven describes the sustainably grown Sandalwood which is the star of the show accented with spicy and resinous qualities that I would absolutely love.     Lovely intro and review! What appealed to me about Island Lush based on Steven’s review was how he described the sandalwood in this fragrance as creamy, warm, and rich as opposed to dry and woodsy, as sandalwood often can be, particularly when paired with cedar oak or other drier woods. Rather, he emphasizes how the pairing with guaic wood brings out those creamy, silky aspects of sandalwood. I much prefer creamy, silky, and warm, rich sandalwood to the dry, almost papery Santal 33 types that are so popular and everpresent nowadays, so learning that makes me very intrigued by Island Lush

    What appealed to me about Island Lush based on Michelyn’s introduction was learning that the perfume is inspired by the beautiful symphony of Vanuatu and Australia sandalwood intertwined to create a perfect and sustainable tropical smooth fragrance.     I’ve always appreciated Steven’s descriptions and reviews on fragrances. Sandalwood is one of my favorite woods and is featured in several of my favorites in my collection. As a wood and spice lover, this will be something I would love to experience.
    I follow indigoperfumery and have visited the store before as well and purchased some samples and Russian Tea by Masque Milano when I was there. What a great place to explore fragrances.
