“In summer, the song sings itself.” – William Carlos Williams

My best friend and I met on a study abroad program in 2001 at China’s prestigious Beijing University. We spent our days learning Mandarin and our nights dancing at a Cuban salsa joint in Beijing’s glamorous Embassy District. Those humid summer nights were spent dancing in and out of multi-lingual conversations (usually full of Spanish, Mandarin, English, and French), meeting fashionable and exciting people from all over the world, and listening to some of the greatest live music I’ve experienced. A dance partner who owned an emerald mine in South America one night to a Swedish Ambassador the next. A constant throughout those heady nights were the top-notch piña coladas that everyone came to enjoy. The fall semester brought more intensive studies and the events of September 11th (experiencing them together in Beijing solidified our bond for a lifetime), but the magic of that carefree summer stays with us always. We share these precious memories and also a fragrance that, for the first time, brings us back to that extraordinary place, For the Scent of It Gardenia Colada.

Gardenia Flower, Upsplash

For the Scent of It Gardenia Colada opens with the bright lift of pineapple and lime, sending me straight to hot nights and an indulgent party atmosphere. Crisp and sweet, sea breezes and warm beaches flood my mind. Orange curaçao adds its complex sweetness with a shot of bitter electricity through the backbone of the fragrance. The luscious floral heart of For the Scent of It Gardenia Colada is truly patrician in its extravagance – no expense is spared. Hedonism in the hands of people who can afford anything. Sweet white florals surround me. Gardenia and Magnolia braid together. The creaminess of gardenia’s coconut undertones words brilliantly with the pineapple and lime of the opening. Green undertones keep the energy throughout.

Perfumer Michael Schrammel describes his inspiration for the fragrance, “Gardenia Colada is one of the few perfumes that was born from a name first. One day, while talking and drinking Piña Coladas on the porch, this fun, clever name hit me like a wave. I’ve always loved the smell of gardenia, and of course, piña coladas. The combination of the two sounded perfect. I went through many modifications for this scent, searching for the right balance of fruits, florals, rum, and sweetness. I also created a ‘Coco Musk’ accord exclusively for this fragrance that is both smooth and creamy, while also having a fruity quality. I set out to produce a realistic gardenia blended beautifully into a delicious tropical cocktail. A vacay with every spray, you might say.”

The booziness of For the Scent of It Gardenia Colada shows itself in the early dry down as a rum accord transitions into vanilla and musk. The sandalwood I pick up on is especially creamy and dreamy. If you want to be transported to a tropical celebration, For the Scent of It Gardenia Colada will take you there.

Notes: lime, pineapple, orange curaçao, gardenia, magnolia alba, rum, coconut, vanilla, coco musk, sandalwood

Pineapple, coconut and lime, sign me up!
This screams summertime to me. Love how Michael said this fragrance is “a vacay with every spray.”

I’ve sampled a few from For the Scent of It and they are definitely quality fragrance. I’m sure this new one is no different.

A tropical vacation sounds wonderful to this desert dweller. I love magnolia and combining with pina coloda sounds divine.

It was fun to read of the memories the perfume evoked for Rachel. It is one of the many things I love about fragrance, how transportative it can be. Pineapple and lime sound delicious.

A tropical take on gardenia sounds like a fun fragrance for the summertime. I live in Maryland USA.

  • I normally wouldn’t be interested in this combination of notes, but the review made me wonder if this could be the epitome of summer memories for me too? I can easily see Gardenia marrying well with the coconut rum feel of a pina colada. Hmm! It sounds intriguing!

  • I have sampled this fragrance and it is gorgeous. It has all the facets you might wish for in a tropical fragrance, but done in Michael’s own way. As Rachel said, Gardenia Colada is a very transportive fragrance. You cannot wear this fragrance and not imagine yourself sitting in a cabana on the sapphire beaches of the Caribbean. The coco musk accord that Michal created for this gives it a beautifully creamy and sensuous texture. The florals are prominent, but without being too flower-y. It’s a summer stunner for sure. Best of luck to all. I live in NC, USA.

I am extremely intrigued by the coco musk accord and the combination with those tropical florals and fruits sound absolutely divine! I am in the USA.

  • Love many perfumes by For the Scent of it and gardenia colada sounds perfect for the hot summer months. My mom loved gardenias and you just don’t see that in perfumes much anymore. Love the opportunity. In maryland.

I eagerly await any and every new release from Michael’s artistry. I have only sampled Gardenia Colada once and it was such a creamy and woody refreshment to wear on hot summer hikes through tall wooded forests. I love Rachel’s description of how the magnolia and gardenia weave together, as it brings a fruity mystery to the heart of the fragrance. From OR, USA.

This style of composition is right up my alley. Virgin island water… Miami… love the lime and coconut combination. Looking forward to smelling this one too.

  • The notes described smells like the summer that is slowly approaching us! This is like perfect for a beachside party. Also loved the backstory, hearing about all of multilingual conversations had in Beijing. From Florida, USA.

Rachel, Thank you for a wonderful review of Gardenia Colada. Michael Schrammel, Founder and Nose behind For The Scent Of It continues to provide wonderful creations.

I enjoyed how you opened up this review…dancing in a Cuban salsa joint 🙂 My beautiful wife is Cuban and boy can she dance! When I get my nose on this fragrance, I think that will be a memory associated with this scent. The citrus tropical notes along with the “creamy and dreamy” drydown are calling our name to salsa late into the evening (oops…my wife corrected me…salsa late into the early morning hours) 🙂

  • I love the mesh of his environment and a fond taste merged into gardenia colada. Sounds AMAZING; like a creamy, tropical garden delight.

  • This sounds so intriguing! Would love to win it and regardless will be getting a sample!

  • I think gardenia is the most romantic floral note in fragrance, even more than rose. I have several gardenia soliflores (Ineke, Penhaglion, etc) but am always interested in seeing this note in master perfumers’ hands. I love the idea of combining gardenia with boozy notes like rum and Michael’s Pina Colada treatment is inspired. Gardenia Colada is the fragrance to wear on a sultry tropical night. I’m in the US.

  • I love anything that has coconut, vanilla, and rum! The notes in this perfumes sounds amazing for the summer!

  • This sounds so good. Now I want a Pina colada. This is the first spring break in years that I am not going to Florida…..so sad. I’d love to win this vacation in a bottle. The rice powder seals the deal for me. Thanks for the chance. USa.

  • I have to say one of my all time favorite figs is Forbidden Fig by For The Scent of It so I’m really excited to try his coco musk! I also loved his use of florals and fruits in Folk Tales. Gardenia and Magnolia are my favorite white florals and that’s a competitive genre! I have no doubt this is gorgeous and uplifting. Thank you Michael for your generosity. I’m in Cali

  • Owen Blackwood says:

Wow, those notes form top to bottom opening with that pineapple and citrus base notes of sandalwood and vanilla, this fragrance sounds right up my alley. From what I have heard and read about this fragrance sounds amazing and I would love to have a bottle myself.

  • I love anything that has pineapple in it makes it a lovely concoction versatile for any occasions

  • Eris.can.swatch.kaos says:

The sounds this perfume offers, the surroundings and the emotion, I am in love with all the feels. The notes described are sought after to my taste, I could probably blind buy this fragrance, but I’d rather have it as a present. Eris.can.swatch.kaos I live in Oregon

  • Amanda32828 says:

This perfume has everything that I love, gardenias and piña coladas (pineapples). The bottles is superb, the concoction dreamy, and the idea of smelling like this perfume inimaginable. Undoubtedly, the perfect summer fragrance for the upcoming summer Florida weather, commenting from Orlando, Fl. USA.

  • This is one of the few of Michael’s fragrances I haven’t tried. Reading the description, I would have originally expected something too sweet for my tastes, but Lovin’ Spoonful convinced me Michael’s sweet fragrances keep balance in mind (in that case, the strong lavender component). Rachel pointed out that the coconut aspects of gardenia are a perfect fit for the fruity opening in Gardenia Colada; the drydown sounds warm and inviting. Interesting composition.

    I’m in the USA.

  • wallygator88 says:

Thanks for lovely review Rachel. It’s always fun to read Micheal’s articles and see what new scent he has cooking up.

This one is perfect for our Midwestern winters, to remind us that sunny days by the lake, with cold beers, sunshine and laughter are not far away.

    Cheers from WI, USA

It is dark and grey where I am right now, so I am dreaming about imbibing in piña coladas while sitting on a front porch, where wafts of gardenias come my way from a sultry breeze. I love anything with coconut and lime, so Gardenia Colada sounds like the perfect fragrance to bring summer to any location.
    I live in the USA.

  • A vacay with every spray! Sounds just right. I love gardenia fragrances, and I’m intrigued by the ‘creamy and dreamy’ sandalwood note.

  • There is no other cocktail that says relaxing vacation better than a pina colada and the thought of a floral gardenia sounds like a perfect match. I would love to have a little vacation in a bottle. Thanks for the great review!
