Rania J perfumes reviews

Rania J Paris at Esxence 2019 via @raniajparis

It was a pleasure to finally meet perfumer Rania Jouaneh at this year’s Esxence after following her work for some time. I found her to be sincere, impassioned and welcoming – generous with her time and warmth. When she informed Michelyn and me that she had composed a new fragrance, a variation on the musk theme – we were delighted (as you may recall, one of the scent trends we noted was the prevalence of musk soliflores). We smelt myriad musks at Esxence, but Rania J Musc Moschus was memorable in its edible loveliness and custom-made for skin: while it’s gorgeous on paper, it is more complex when applied to a fleshly canvas. It was quite a while before Rania was able to send samples and this involved more work for her; we’re grateful that we may now share our impressions with you.

Rania J Musc Moschus review

Utka Nayika Lady Awaits Her Lover in the Forest 1775-170, British Museum

A musk is a musk is a musk – except that it isn’t, at all. We have beastly musks, beachy musks, tender musks, unwashed musks, foody musks, woody musks, mossy musks, spicy musks, fruity musks, herbaceous/vegetal musks, cottony musks, freshly-laundered-linen musks, barbershop musks, hippie-dippy musks – and more besides. It’s enough to boggle your first cranial nerve (Olfactory! We’re No.1!). What sort of musk is Rania J Musc Moschus?

On paper you’ll notice the blast of bergamot which appears to linger indefinitely; a sweet/tart lusciousness of cassis tempered by silvery iris, the chumminess of vanilla and sandalwood as they riff off one another like jazz musicians – and fluffy musk, unlike its more assertive animalic presence in most of Rania’s previous perfumes. This in itself is a departure from the expected. Mouillettes won’t do at all; the fragrance smells linear on them, you can’t properly gauge it that way. You must have skin.

Rania J Musc Moschus review

The Lovers by Riza-yi Abbasi metmuseum.org

Rania J Musc Moschus = carnal adventure. Be prepared for travel; all that’s required is skin-as-real-estate, the perfume does the rest. Short as the list of materials may appear, it is deceiving because Musc Moschus is a winding road that keeps shifting before you. Forget the road map and follow your nose. Its bracing sparkle of bergamot swiftly segues to cassis (aka blackcurrant) and that tangy aroma we associate with it – fruity, slightly sour yet sweet, oozing juice. Cassis is going to weave its way throughout the fragrance, with a little addendum: there is a touch (well, more than a touch) of the animalic in its absolute. Some liken it to cat urine, but they do so with great affection (Eastern European perfumers/perfumisti I have known, in particular). Next on my skin iris appears, intuitively entwined with sandalwood and vanilla; we’ve been juicy but now there is a woody, smoky aspect because Rania’s vanilla has more faces than Janus. Just when you think the fragrance is ever-so-slightly charred it waxes gourmand: think singed marshmallows, caramel that’s overcooked. It’s honeyed and a tad bitter. Great puffy clouds of cotton candy over a slow flame adorning the evening sky. Wait – here’s the succulent cassis; iris pops up buttery and earthy, cosying up to sandalwood once more. Fruit, flower, wood, resin, musk: it’s a quintet.

Musc Moschus is an ensemble piece in which every player matters. There is an organic flow at work and I suspect that it may be partly due to the use of prime botanical materials. Whatever it is going on, it’s marvelous, comfortable – and fascinating. Musc Moschus will be a favorite for many because of its effortless opulence with a pinch of mischief tossed in. A welcome addition to anyone’s scent wardrobe, the additional merit is its longevity and tenacity: a single spritz lasted all day and clung to clothing even longer.

Notes: bergamot, blackcurrant, iris, sandalwood, vanilla, musk

Samples generously provided by Rania Jouaneh – thank you! My nose is my own…

    Lovely review!
I’m very intrigued by it’s fruity and gourmand qualities. By the the description it seems to be a very unique musk scent, like you would expect from Rania J. My absolute favorite from the house is Ambre Loup.

  • Wow! This sounds so uniquely enticing, while hitting all the notes that appeal to me! The iris that pops up buttery and earthy is my favorite vision! I’m in Florida USA. Thanks for the chance!

  • fazalcheema says:

Rania J Musc Moschus is a long lasting musc perfume that is little different from other Rania J. creations in that is it relatively less animalic and easier to wear. It has interesting notes like iris, bergamot, and vanilla among others. My fav. from Rania J. is Ambre Loup which I suspect is also the most popular in the line. I am in US

  • Thank you for the review Ida. I find your scent breakdown and olfactory observations on this musc to be very interesting. An edible musk indeed!
I would love to take part in the giveaway. The two scents I like from Rania J are Ambre Loup and Lavande 44. Based in Canada.

  • Love both Ida and Rania and it was an immense pleasure to meet them both this year. Lady Ida as always gets out the best of a fragrance and whispers her talent in words of wisdom. I tried this musk. It’s fruity, it’s calm, a bit dirty. My favorite is Ambre Loup, but i admire Rania`s special way of perfume making. Thank you for the wonderful article and giveaway. Ana S. from Spain, EU.

  • I’m not familiar with the brand, but the review is wonderful. Musc Moschus sounds fabulous to me. I would very love to try it. Thank you for the chance. I live in the EU.

  • Ohhh, Ida! This was a fantastic and mischievous review. My favorite was this “Whatever it is going on, it’s marvelous, comfortable – and fascinating. Musc Moschus will be a favorite for many because of its effortless opulence with a pinch of mischief tossed in.” It’s calling to my disruptive side.

  • I’d be very curious to try this fluffy musk that is reminiscent of smoky cotton candy rounded by sandalwood. I enjoyed the description of Musc Moschus as being both opulent and mischievous, and enjoyed reading about its tartness and sweetness with a touch of iris. I have tried all of the fragrances in this line and my favorite is the luscious Amber Loup. Thank you for the chance to win. I live in the USA.

  • The Plum Girl says:

Thanks Ida, I loved the part about musk is a musk is a musk – not! Great! I had the opportunity to meet Rania and she is a lovely lady indeed! I live in EU. <3

  • BostonScentGuy says:

I love how wonderfully Ida describes the journey of the scent on paper vs. on the skin. It makes a lot of sense that the scent itself only seems to be “itself” on a body. I also love the way Ida takes a look at all of the aspects of it–even the surprising and gourmand. I have not tried any Rania J fragrances. Thanks for the draw! I’m in the US.

  • Sebastien Bouillon says:

I loved this review – very intriguing fragrance!
Oud Assam is my favorite perfume from Rania J, closely followed by Ambre Loup.

  • I appreciated the emphasis of wearing this fragrance on skin, as it sounds to be one that is beautifully complex and one that wants to make its unique mark on the body. (Commenting from USA)

  • Great review, Ida! I always appreciate your detailed descriptions. Musc Moschus sounds like it would smell like Heaven! I’ve not yet tried anything by Raina J, but this one is definitely on my “must try” list, now. I’m located in the US.

  • Oh my. This sounds absolutely divine. Here’s my favorite part.

Just when you think the fragrance is ever-so-slightly charred it waxes gourmand: think singed marshmallows, caramel that’s overcooked. It’s honeyed and a tad bitter. I live in the USA, thanks for the generous giveaway. My favorite Rania J. Is Lavande 44

Would love to experience this new creation from this house, all that I have tried so far are sublime, my favorite of the line is Oud Assam.

  • I love your description of this New Scent ,Even the name is Intriguing.
Musks can go in so many different directions it’s really the talent and the vision of the Perfumer to Determine the Coarse.
Rania J is a Genius and I love her work I own and Love Oud Assam and Habenero and Ambre Loup is on my very Near to buy List 🙂
I would love to try this new Musc Creation for 3 Reasons .
    1- I love Musk
    2- I love Gourmands
3- Rania J can do No Wrong
Thank you for this Opportunity and God Bless.

  • I love Ambre Loup, but that is all I’ve ever tried from Rania J. Obviously, I must try this if Ida likes it. Loved the inclusion of the art work. I’ve never been a huge fan of musk, but this sounds enchanted. Thanks for another great review and a generous draw. I’m in the USA

  • Great review! I like musks but got really excited when I saw iris as a note. The description of it as a gourmand has me intrigued but it doesn’t sound like iris plays a prominent role. The “carnal adventure’ part is promising! I live in the US

  • Dubaiscents says:

I am so excited to hear there is a new scent from Ms Rania. I love her line, all of the scents are completely original takes on what you think would be a common ingredient. My current favorites from the line are Jasmin Karma and Ambre Loup. Musc Moschus sounds amazing because of the use of cassis and sandalwood along with the musks. I can’t wait to try this one, I’m sure I won’t be disappointed. Thanks for the draw. I’m in the US.

  • What a great review, I have not tried any of her creations but from what i read they are all superb.
This new one looks amazing and the part that is really interesting and surprising is that with a fewer ingredients what shows is a really complex creation : Fruit, flower, wood, resin, musk:. What a description!
I’d love to win this one. I live in the US

  • I’m familiar with the scent of the leaves of the blackcurrant shrub. I kind of like it, and yes, it smells of cat urine. The iris note should tone it down a bit. I haven’t tried anything from Rania J Paris, but would like to be the lucky winner of this fabulous draw. Thanks for the opportunity. USA

  • isunnychaudhary says:

Musc Moschus seems a wonderful musk fragrance (musk is not obtained through anal gland of a male musk deer) so it is not an easy task.

Ida specifically mentioned about the longevity of the perfume which seems spectacular to me. I would surely love this fragrance in my collection.

I haven’t tried Rania Jouaneh fragrances yet but I believe it is a line which is a must try as per Ida’s description.

  • Wow, I loved reading this review, thank you Ida. My mouth was watering as I was reading about marshmallows, caramel and cotton candy. So good to hear it lasts all day long on skin. I havent tested Rania J before. Living in EU

  • I would love to experience this fragrance. Musk is a problematical note for me, but a fluffy, botanical musk sounds great, especially “with a pinch of mischief tossed in”. Rania J creates lovely perfumes. Ambre Loup is one of them. In the US.

  • What I enjoyed most about Ida’s review is that she described the fragrance in a way that I could easily understand and left me feeling that this is a fragrance that I would love to get my nose on. My thanks to Rania Jouaneh and Cafleurebon for the opportunity to do so.None of the Rania J fragrances have excited my olfactory receptors as of yet, but hopefully that will change in the near future. I reside in Canada.

  • Thank you for the review. Now I am intrigued by this interesting musk, on the gourmand side. A very vivid description. Almost mouth watering. Ana, Romania.

  • Cami grusuzache says:

Gourmand perfume plus musc and iris? Yesss, please! So much I enjoyed the pictures in arabic style showing some lovers. I lived for 2 years in middle east and I can say these pictures are pretty rare in their museums. Never tested Rania J before. Living in EU. Thank you for the draw

  • Pairing musk with juicy cassis and powdery, edible iris sounds wonderful to me. This one seems like a people-magnet, you know, one of those comfort scents that people are drawn to. I never tried any fragrance from this house, so I’d gladly try this one. Thanks for the lovely review!

  • I enjoyed most the reference to perfume being some sort of traveling, where you only need your Skin as Real Estate – beautiful metaphor!

Never tried any Rania J fragrances

  • marcopietro says:

Thanks Ida for another beautiful review, full of suggestions and emotions. It’s irresistible the description of a complex and balanced mix where each component is perceptible and gives sensations in a continuous evolution determined by the main ingredient: our skin!
My favorite Rania J fragrance is Oud Assam.
    I live in EU.

  • I love Ambre Loup and am anxious to try this one. Lovely review, I especially liked the blast of bergamot the silvery iris and the chumminess of vanilla and sandalwood. These sound like amazing chords working together in a perfume. Living in the EU

  • Wow. I love Rania J perfume and that’s a good news! I love all the composition but the best in Ambre Loup! Carnal adventure? Love it 😉

  • Oh, this sounds interesting! Never had the chance to test Rania J’s perfumes but I always stumble upon her name on perfume websites. Would love to smell this 🙂 I live in EU.

  • Aimee LOndee says:

I love this review! Thanks, Ida. My favorite part is the acknowledgement of how many types of musk there are. The art you’ve chosen is lovely and delectable, and the perfume sounds right up my street. I’ve never smelled Raina J fragrances. I’d love to be entered in this draw. I’m in the USA.

  • What a coincidence to see a review on Rania’s latest creation when you’re wearing Lavande 44 that same day. Such an example of a great fragrance, which goes by an unassuming name.
People, pay attention, this is yet again an underrated perfumer, who should get more attention by us, parfumistas!

  • I enjoyed reading the walk through of the stages of this complex sounding offering. Have not smelled anything from this house. US

  • Rania J Ambre Loup is one of my favorite perfumes. I would like to experience her Musc Moschus as I really would like to try a fruity musk

  • I loved how Ida described this musk as a carnal adventure… so true that there are so many ways a perfumer can use musk. I have only tried Ambre Loup from Rania J and very much enjoyed it.

Thanks for another great article, Ida. Thank you Rania J and Cafleurebon for the generous draw.

    I live in the US.

  • It’s good to hear how long a fragrance lasts most people skip over the longevity of the fragrance which is very important to me I love to hear that a fragrance lasts all day I really like the sound of this gem would love to win this! My favorite Rania fragrance so far is Ambre Loup. I live in the USA

  • Love Ida’s description of the journey that Musc Moschus takes you on. Maybe not the cat urine aspect, but we can forgive a touch of animalics in a lovely iris concoction now and again. From experience, it’s likely a natural blackcurrant that’s giving it the sourness anyway. Gosh I love the puffy cloud imagery. Makes me want to dream. Of perfume. Canada.

  • This article is very detailed and has me wanting to try Raina J because I have never tried her perfume. I think this one would smell wonderful on my wife. Thanks for the wonderful review

  • What I enjoyed most about ida’s review was how expansive it was.

Firstly it was great to hear about such a pleasant experience with the person behind the brand. To know it’s good people succeeding really helps you connect to a brand , not just having a nameless/faceless impassionate people succeeding.

I really appreciated also how nuanced the description was , the ability to pull from reference points so vast yet compose her thoughts so well that it really gave such a insight into the fragrance.

My favourite from them is ambre loup.

    I’m from Ireland.

  • I really enjoyed the description in the review of the journey you take wearing this perfume and how it changes. How it is complex even with few ingredients. It sounds wonderful. I have not tried any RaniaJ fragrances so have no favorite, hopefully it will be this one. I’d love to be entered in the giveaway. From CT USA. Thank you.

  • I thought it’s a cool idea how musk can be so multifaceted. Despite a small note breakdown, this sounds about as far from simple or linear as you can get because of the musk note.
I haven’t tried any from the house.
Im in the US. Thanks for the draw

  • Thank you Ida for reviewing Rania J Musc Moschus for us. I am definitely a musk lover, almost all my perfumes have musk in a way or another.
The promise of a ”custom-made for skin” musk is hypnotic to me. From Rania J I know and I love Ambre Loup and Lavande 44.
    I’m from the EU.

  • Excellent review! Quite a journey of scents. I would love to try it. I don’t have a favourite Rania J fragrance. I live in the EU.

  • redwheelbarrow says:

Iris, musk, and vanilla! This sounds like such a beautiful fragrance and the addition of the singed marshmallow sounds so interesting. You’ve definitely got me curious about this one. Thank you for the review and draw. I’m in the US.

  • Recently I’ve been drawn to muscs and I absolutely love this bit of the review “Fruit, flower, wood, resin, musk: it’s a quintet”
My favourite from Rania J is also Ambre Loup.

Thanks for the draw, I live in France.

  • Ida has nailed it as usual. I irks me greatly when people say they ‘don’t like musk’. Nonsense – musk is so multi faceted that how can one hate the full spectrum of them? I have not sampled this house before, however this fragrance sounds great, a very solid lineup of notes. In from Canada.

  • I liked the detailed description of the fragrance. I don’t have a favorite Rania J fragrance. Thanks for the chance, I’m in Canada.

  • I love how this review felt like a journey. It makes me want to try Musc Moschus on my skin immediately. Seems like a new fragrance discovery for those who like to travel inside a scent. Thanks for the giveaway. In the USA

  • Thank you for the review…I love that this perfume is described as a ‘winding road ‘ and I look forward to sniffing one of my favorite scents; charred marshmallows…my mouth waters just thinking about that note! I don’t think I’ve had the pleasure of sampling a Rania J fragrance but would love to! I am in the US. Thank you all for the chance.

  • Great review! I like musk’s versatility. My favorite part is the description of Musc Moschus as a winding road that keeps shifting before you I have not tried any Rania J fragrances. Thanks for the draw! I’m in the EU

  • It sounds very complex and with a rich smell, sweet (honeyed?) and bitter, earthy and buttery. I would like to try it. I didn’t have the chance to try any Rania J fragrance til now.
I live in Romania, EU. Thank you for the chance! ♥

  • Thanks for another great review, Ida! Rania J Musc Moschus sounds like a fragrance I would fall I love with as I love musk. This part of your description sums up the fragrance notes- ‘Fruit, flower, wood, resin, musk: it’s a quintet.’ I haven’t tried any Rania J yet, thanks for this opportunity. – CA, USA

  • IvanVelikov says:

Beautiful review ! Tangy musky smell , with sandalwood and vanilla base . Sounds amazing , and personally i’m glad Musk Moschus is not some strong animalic musk fragrance.
“a single spritz lasted all day and clung to clothing even longer.”
Big time + . Good longevity and projection are really important to me.
Other than me seeing some Rania J Youtube reviews , i do not know the brand .
    Thank you for the opportunity.

    My best

  • Lucky you, Ida, to meet Rania J! I have tried (and written about ) her lavender, rose, jasmin, leather, and amber perfumes and they were all absolutely swoon worthy. Your review captures that magic. When is a musk not a musk? When Rania J makes it, of course! Thanks for the review and reminding me I need to try the few I’ve missed. USA

  • Rania J I have no experience with , but judging by Ida colorful review I’ll enjoy it a lot.
I’m always careful with musk fragrances. Some I adore , but some I can’t stand. Fruity and zesty cologne , some bitterness and not a gourmand type of vanilla is what I except from Musk Moschus.
Thanks to Ida for sharing her thoughts, and Rania Jouaneh for the generosity.
    USA

  • After reading Ida Meister review I imagine myself eating Vanilla Cassis Cake , drinking freshly squeezed lime/bergamote juice and sitting on some comfortable rocking chair in from of some sunny cabbin in the woods. Happy Pastry Chef in the house 🙂
All I know about Rania J, is they have one top quality amber fragrance. Can’t remember the name , but I do remember Sebastian was praising it in his “Top Amber scents” YouTube video.
Appreciate the review, and the giveaway campaign.
    USA

  • One thing I like most about the review is that it specifically mentions that the fragrance needs skin to really come alive and not paper/test strip. I find many times they do smell different on skin. I also like that the fragrance really develops and changes over time and like the sandlewood and bergamont in it as well. I have not tried Rainia J before but would like to. In the USA and thanks for the draw.

  • No one works a verb better than Ida. That’s what I love about all her reviews. I have not tried Rania J yet and I live in the USA.

  • I don`t have a favorite Rania J fragrance, I must confess I don`t even know them for real. Ida, this is a great review, Musc Moschus sounds very interesting 😀 I live in EU (Romania).

  • I love this description – “think singed marshmallows, caramel that’s overcooked. It’s honeyed and a tad bitter. Great puffy clouds of cotton candy over a slow flame adorning the evening sky.” Oh boy, that sounds awesome!
    I live in the US.

  • I was not able to go to Esxence this year unfortunately, so Musk Moschus I have not smelled. All others I do , because I own the Rania J sample set I got directly from them. Most if not all of the time US based niche boutiques do not carry official sample sets of the brands they sell for years, and that’s something I strongly dislike. For example Rania J samples are 2ml each, sample set is 7x2ml , that’s 14ml of juice for €28. Luckyscent made Rania J samples are $4 for 0.7ml . Do your math .
Musk Moschus is my kind of scent. Not a skanky type of musk , but instead fresh, fruity happy smell with creamy base.
I like my fragrances loud, and I’m happy Ida mentioned the longevity and sillage.
If I have to rate Rania J fragrances , my top 3 would be :
    1. T. Habanero
    2. Ambre Loup
    3. Lavende 44
Thank you Ida for the classy review , and the pictures.
    @raniajparis I’m a fan of too.

  • Nice, this sounds like a unique Musc fragrance. Haven’t tried a Rania J yet so it’ll be nice to get a chance. Thanks, US

  • Outstanding review by Ida. I am intrigue by this musc. Its animalic, its fruity, burned cotton candy and its a gourmand musc,? Thats very amazing. I have not tried Rania J but I am interested in researching. Thanks for the review. I live in USA.

  • Michael Prince says:

Rania J Musc Moschus, a beautiful combo of bergamot, cassis, iris, vanilla, sandalwood, and musk…some of my favorite fragrance notes. I love the description and detail Ida used on this fragrance. I don’t have a favorite Rania J fragrance because I haven’t sampled any. I am from the USA.

  • What I enjoyed most about Ida’s review was when she said…”Musc Moschus is an ensemble piece in which every player matters”. She did a great job describing how the notes will feel on one’s skin. As of now I do not have a favorite Rania J fragrance.

  • doveskylark says:

I liked reading Ida’s description of the juicy notes found in Musc Moschus. The bergamot and the cassis sound lovely. I also like that there is a singed marshmallow aspect to this fragrance. That appeals to me.
    I haven’t tried anything from Rania J.
    I live in the USA.

  • bigscoundrel says:

Great review! You need skin to bring out Musc Moschus. It just so happens I have skin that’s perfect. I hope I win. I’m in the USA.

  • |”A musk is a musk is a musk – except that it isn’t, at all. We have beastly musks, beachy musks, tender musks, unwashed musks, foody musks, woody musks, mossy musks, spicy musks, fruity musks, herbaceous/vegetal musks, cottony musks, freshly-laundered-linen musks, barbershop musks, hippie-dippy musks – and more besides.”
    PREACH Ida !
I don’t get why so many , both guys and gals are afraid of musks . Even mentioning “musk fragrance” make quite a few to turn around , and go into opposite direction. Musk fragrance does NOT equal dirty , barnyard or unwashed type of smell . Straight to the point clarification .
Bergamote , cassis , santal , vanilla and pinch of iris … just WOW. Mouthwatering is the word i’ll use , if i have to describe Ida”s review with one word.
Unfortunately i have to experience with Rania J .
    Top opportunity – thank you.
Back and forth between USA and Scotland. 1 week is US -> 1 week in Scotland , and so on.Basically both US and EU at the same time.

  • Every time I’m seeing cassis as a note in fragrances, I’m starting craving cassis juice , candies, cookies and so on. Grew up in Europe, and I’m used to the smell and taste of cassis. In US cassis is commonly known as black currant, but most don’t even know the smell and the taste of it , because of some federal ban of growing cassis from 100 years ago. In some states the ban still exists, including Virginia where I live at the moment. It’s really hard to find cassis , and cassis products in some parts of US , and I find all of this mind boggling.
I have to say Musk Moschus sounds impressive, like it was made to be Pharrell Williams fragrance from “Happy” video. I’m also happy there’s a clean fruity musk we got here , and not some dirty body odor type of smell.
Ambre Loop is my favorite Rania J fragrance. It’s on of my husband favorite scents.
Thank you for both the review , and the generosity.

  • Great review! Vanilla and musk are my favorite scents. Ida’s review is intriguing, it makes you dream about this perfume and want it. I like the bottle, it is simple and elegant. My favourite Rania J fragrance is Ambre Loup. I live in EU.

  • I liked how Ida conveyed how many different kinds of musc there are and how this one is unique. My favorite Rania J fragrance so far is Amber Loup. I live in the US.

  • patrick_348 says:

What I liked about the review was Ida’s description of how the fragrance changed and modulated as it was worn. It made me want to see what it might do on my own skin. I don’t know any Rania fragrances, but this sounds like one to explore. I am in the US in North Carolina.

  • Excellent review by Ida! You had me at Rania J Musc Moschus is a carnal adventure. I loved the explanation of the various musks and that you need skin for Musc Moschus. The gourmand qualities are great. My favorite line was: “Musc Moschus is an ensemble piece in which every player matters.” Thanks for the giveaway and I live in the US!

good morning, I would like to know where it is possible to find perfumes in northern Italy. I managed to have two (Ambre loup and Houd Assan) but I can’t find any more. Thanks
