By now, anyone who hasn’t heard of Harry Potter must have been living in a cave (without LTE) for the last two decades. The Boy Who Lived, in his cracked spectacles, black cloak and long college scarf, is, of course, one of the greatest literary phenomena of our time. So popular has the pint-sized wizard become that he has generated an enormous industry of Potter-related toys, games, venues, even an entire amusement park. So unsurprisingly, butterbeer, the celebrated tipple of The Three Broomsticks Inn, has by now inspired countless recipes, soft drinks, ice creams and cocktails. Now I am no Madam Rosmerta ; I wouldn’t know one butterbeer version from the next. But I know a delicious fragrance when I smell one. Dawn Spencer Hurwitz’s delightful take on the Gryffindor set’s favourite bevvy is as yummy as its name suggests but is meant for grown-ups. It’s a wintertime treat that is toothsome and cuddly but also sophisticated enough to wear to your next Yule Ball. It And it won’t get your house elves drunk.

There are very few fragrances that make me want to giggle like a little girl when I first smell them, but DSH Perfumes Butterbeer put an immediate smile on my face. Its opening is pure joy: fizzy, bubbly lemon soda, ambrette and whipped cream take you straight to one of those grandmotherly tea shops where everything is homemade and there’s always a birthday party in the corner. JK Rowling describes butterbeer as tasting like a “less sickly-sweet butterscotch,” and the burnished brown sugar-butter aroma of that childhood sweet is, as you’d expect, the centerpiece of the perfume. But before you think this is a fragrance for first years, Spencer Hurwitz’s potion stops short of G-rated with tavern notes of roasted barley and rum and tempers the sweetness with a judicious squeeze of lemon.

But this is no kiddie confection. Some rum bustles in right after, and there’s a moment or two of yo-ho-ho before Butterbeer starts to settle into its dessert notes. Buttercream – less sugary than the real thing – mixes with some irresistible roasted barley in the heart. A little later, chewy benzoin adds some texture to vanilla, and I can just perceive the raisiny aroma of tonka bean as they also muddle around together. As time progresses, I get some hints of beer – probably the combination of barley and coumarin – and the fragrance seems less Potterish and more adult. Wisely, Spencer Hurwitz does not overcomplicate things, adding just enough counterpoints to the richness of the butterscotch heart to temper it for more refined palates, and lets them rest on a bed of sandalwood.

DSH Perfumes Butterbeer is not a complicated fragrance, nor should it be. It is adorable and very wearable, just the antidote to winter blues but also perfect for when you want to get out there and manage some mischief. I’ve been wearing it a lot and it makes me grin like George and Fred  Weasley every time.

Note: DSH Perfumes Butterbeer was an honourable mention on my Top Ten Fragrances of 2023.

This sounds amazing. A fragrance with butterscotch & burnt sugar, how could it be bad. Those butterscotch candies definitely bring me back to my youth. A bubbly lemon soda opening seems like a treat to the nose. Definitely something to get my nose on.

Full transparency, was never into Harry Potter. Hope this doesn’t ruin my chances of winning.

I’m a huge fan of Harry Potter and my favorite fragrances are ones with sweetness to them. This would be right up my alley! Just like the ones in Harry Potter! My favorite movie is Harry Potter and the Sorcerers stone!

  • What strikes me the most is how someone had the idea to create this perfume!!! Bloody brilliant!! I’m a HUGE fan of Harry Potter and would love to wear this while watching the Harry Potter movies!!! My favorite is Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban!!! Being a gourmand lover, I would also wear this whenever I’m craving butterbeer!!!

  • I love a lemon note in a gourmand!
I think the first Harry Potter movie was my favorite. I don’t watch a ton of movies but I’d read the books and did see this series. Watching the characters come to life and the whole world bright to the screen was really unique to me.

  • What a deliciously fun scent and review! Loved all the potter references, they were spellbinding (see what I did there?). Anyway, I love several DSH creations and butterbeer sounds like it might just be another I would enjoy. In maryland.

  • The description of it being fizzy citrus with burnt sugar accords sounds so intriguing! My favorite Harry Potter movie is Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban

  • see now we are talking!!! My favorite type of scent and my favorite movie series of all time? That opening of bubbly lemon soda, ambrette and whipped cream and then the thought of buttercream I’m smiling already and have not even smelled it.

my favorite Harry Potter movie is Prisoner of Azkaban

  • Well, I am quite elated to find out that Dawn has created a fragrance inspired by Butterbeer! As a longtime fan of her work, I am not surprised she has created this delicious adult gourmand. Like Lauryn, I am sure smelling Butterbeer for the first time will bring a smile to my face. I love a fizzy or effervescent quality in a fragrance, especially when combined with creamy or other gourmand notes. The notes of roasted barley and rum sound mouthwatering. I loved Lauryn’s comments about the chewy benzoin adding texture to the vanilla and the hints of beer. I would love the opportunity to own a bottle of Butterbeer! My favorite Harry Potter film is Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2. Thank you, Lauryn, for the excellent review, and thank you to DSH for the generous giveaway. I am located in the USA.

love how this sent seems so wearable yet so decadent, I love the notes of buttercream roasted barley, some vanilla and Tonka bean, and the richness of the butterscotch referring to the butter beer in Harry Potter!!

I love Harry Potter, The Goblet of Fire, I think it is such a great movie, and I seriously have a hard time choosing between any of the Harry Potter movies, because I think they are all phenomenally executed and have such a great storyline!

  • Wow, sounds amazing again, but nearly everything I see reviewed here sounds amazing! I love the idea of an adult butterscotch that isn’t sweeeeeeet. I like gourmands but nearly all of them are so sweet on me they are unbearable. I amp sweet, I guess. This sounds much more balanced than most and the barley notes make my nose twitch to sniff! I am divided between the Potter books and Movies, frankly. Each offer different facets of the characters and mood, but I suppose if I had to pick, I would pick Sorcerer’s Stone, because of the newness of discovery as the world unfolds.

  • Dawn knows how to do a gourmand without making it sickly sweet, and this one sounds like so much fun! I’m very interested in how the roasted barley extract plays with the sweet notes. I wish I could remember which of the movies I liked best, but it’s been too many years! I’m in the US.

Lovely offering indeed !! I’m a huge fan of Harry Potter and my favorite fragrances are ones with sweetness to them. This would be right up my alley! Just like the ones in Harry Potter! From PA,USA

  • Yum! This sounds like a fun and luscious gourmand. The rum, brown sugar and buttercream accords are mouthwatering and the roasted barley extract put it firmly in the butterbeer category. Love the Harry Potter references. I’m in the US.

  • Interesting this makes Lauryn giggling and smile. Those notes sound really good! I didn’t know Tonka could go a raisin direction. I have heard of Harry Potter, I’ve never read a book, seen a movie or been to the theme park. Just a passing glance at Harry Potter knick knacks at the store. I guess I almost live in a cave. If I’m the lucky winner I will spray it on myself and watch my first Harry Potter movie. Thanks for the chance. USA.

  • Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban!
I love the way the Three Broomsticks always felt in the Harry Potter films. I love the idea of a beverage that is still kid-friendly and Butterbeer always seemed so delectable sounding when I read the books. I am intrigued to try something that is inspired by Harry Potter. It must be magical and it sounds incredibly wearable. From Portland, OR.

  • Brown sugar, benzoin and vanilla sound like an incredible combination! My favorite Harry Potter movie was the first one, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone.

  • Although I think I am a slytherin at heart, I would love to win Butterbeer
My favorite Harry Potter movie is Harry Potter and The Goblet of Fire.

  • I think what interests me is all the butteriness lol the butterscotch and buttercream and mysterious butterbeer. It sounds warm and cozy and yet uplifting in its spirit. I think the touch of rum and lemon will bring back childhood memories of feeling a bit under the weather and papi making a hot lemon toddy and tucking me in which is a lovely memory for me. Let’s have some fun!! I am in California thanks for the chance to win.

I know I am the odd one here, but I have never read any of the Harry Potter books, nor I have seen any of the movies. Can I still participate in the giveaway? The notes, especially the fresh lemon, the butter cream accord and the barley, sound delightful.

  • I usually find sweet gourmands difficult to wear, but I trust Dawn’s nose, and I’m very curious how she translated butterbeer into a fragrance. The effervescent opening sounds like a good way to lift the composition a bit and keep the butterscotch aroma from being too saccharine, as do a hit of roaster barley and rum. I’m particularly curious about that combination of barley, coumarin, vanilla, benzoin, and sandalwood in the base, which sounds warm and comforting. Butterbeer is surely a welcome spray on a dreary winter morning. Great review, Lauryn.

Regarding that prompt, I haven’t seen the Harry Potter movies in a long time, but I remember the Prisoner of Azkaban being a dark surprise that took the series in a new direction.

    I’m in the USA.

  • Thanks for the really great review Lauryn!

The opening of this fragrance really sounds wonderful and nostalgic to me – it reminds me of the lime syrup vanilla ice cream floats that I used to enjoy in summer.

I like what DSH has done in the mid and base to realize the essence of a butterscotch scent/flavour, while still making this wearable.

    Cheers from WI, USA
