Diptyque Eau Rose Eau de Parfum Holiday Pop-Up Store January 9, 2022

Cult favored French fragrance house Diptyque is beloved for their legendary fragrances, candles, and world-class lifestyle products has been very busy the last couple of years judging by the number of releases and collections. With in-person fragrance events on hold since the pandemic began, it was a welcome invitation to come and celebrate Diptyque’s 60th Anniversary last September at their pop-up store in Manhattan’s Meatpacking District for the release of their five-piece collection Le Grand Tour. During the holidays it re-opened. I attended Sniffapalooza’s The Art of Gifting! where I was given a (pre-view) sample of their soon-to-be-released, Eau Rose Eau de Parfum (January 4th, 2022).

Huntington Library, Art Museum, and Botanical Gardens: Rose Garden (Piece of Eden)

“A rose is a rose is a rose is a rose” Gertrude Stein from “Sacred Emily”

I adore flowers and especially the rose, the “queen of the flowers”. This stems from my visits to the Huntington Library, Art Museum, and Botanical Gardens in Pasadena, California growing up. The fourteen gardens are exquisite but the gorgeous Rose Garden made the biggest impression on me. That was it for me! The 3-acre garden features 1,800 rose species and varieties that are arranged to trace the history of the rose from 450 B.C. to the present. It holds at least one of every type of rose, old and new, including alba, bourbon, centifolia, China, damask, English, floribunda, gallica, Grandiflora, hybrid musk, hybrid perpetual, hybrid tea, miniature, moss, noisette, polyantha, portland, rambler, and tea.

Last week while doing a scent-through at Bloomingdale’s on 59th Street and came across the two Diptyque Eau Rose Eau de Parfum wall displays. One on the main floor and the other at their counter in the fragrance department (further back on the same floor).

Diptyque has crafted some spectacular rose fragrances (call them rose specialists) but what threw me off was a rose launch in winter. I would have thought a spring release to be appropriate. Well, this Eau Rose Eau de Parfum release is anything but conventional. And, a winter rose is a beauty to behold and this one is no exception.

The 10-year anniversary of the original Eau de Toilette (2012) made it an opportune time to re-conceptualize Diptyque Eau Rose Eau de Parfum. Crafted by Master Perfumer Fabrice Pellegrin the 2021 Winner of the Prix Francois Coty, who specializes in rose scents, and is the creator of a number of iconic Diptyque scents (such as Do Son and Eau Duelle), all constructed around notes of the rose, it is a mixture comprised of the original Damascena and Centifolia roses, as a tribute to its sister scent, but M. Pellegrin gives us a richer and more intense aroma as an update to its predecessor, the Eau Rose EDT. This is not your powdery rose. This is a cozier and more romantic version., with good sillage and longevity. Having a good size collection of samples and bottles from the house I had a chance to compare the different iterations of the Diptyque rose-centric perfumes over the years and compare. As the saying goes, “nothing succeeds like success.”

Eau Rose Collection

Eau Rose Collection

Diptyque Eau de Rose Eau de Parfum emphasizes artichoke, litchi, and chamomile which gives roundness to the entire scent experience. Infused with extracts of firad rose,  the rose is upcycled through the use of discarded Damascena rose water during the distillation process, in keeping with the brand’s commitment to sustainability; Diptyque’s collaboration with renowned florist Maurice Harris on the new Unleash the Rose collection recreated a polychromatic portrait of the rose to create a colorful flower arrangement that has been digitally printed onto the packaging.

Roses – by (Mary Ann Evans known by her pen name) George Eliot

You love the roses – so do I. I wish

The sky would rain down roses, as they rain

From off the shaken bush. Why will it not?

Then all the valley would be pink and white

And soft to tread on. They would fall as light

As feathers, smelling sweet; and it would be

Like sleeping and like waking, all at once!

The house is releasing a limited-edition collection of signature candles in four scents, Roses, Camomille, Litchi, and Artichaut mimicking the ingredients in the blend. Lit together they re-create the scent of the floral composition.  I do not recall any house doing this. Game changer. The full Limited-Edition Collection includes Eau de Parfum Eau Rose 75ML, Eau de Toilette Eau Rose 100ML, four Limited Edition scented candles, Eau Rose hand cream and, Eau Rose refillable solid perfume, and Eau Rose hair mist.

Top notes: roses damascena and centifolia, Middle notes: chamomile; Base notes: litchi

Perceived note: artichoke

  • I am so curious about this! When I first saw the name, I thought: “Didn’t Diptyque already launch this a while back?” But then I saw the list of notes and realized that it was not the same. Thank you for the background and photos, Hernando! The displays look beautiful! My current favorite Diptyque fragrance is Kyoto, which has that beet accord. It would be great to see what an artichoke accord is like! Thanks for the draw too! I’m in the US.

  • Eau Rose looks like an interesting composition. It seems Maurice Harris has inspired Diptyque to create an abstract floral coomposition with fruity nuances. My favorite from Diptyque is Oud Palao. I am in US.

  • As a male I live rose fragrances, anything rose I want. This being a “winter rose” is very intriguing, also the fact that this is a parfum version is even better. Excellent review and one I look forward to smelling. Tam Doa is my favorite Diptyque.

  • I love the way Hernando describes this fragrance; I love rose scents, but they can every so often get a little bit same-y. Diptyque Eau de Rose EDP sounds like a friendlier cousin of Chronotope’s Spite EDP, a fragrance I adore. My favorite Diptyque is Tam Dao.

  • Dubaiscents says:

Wonderful review, Hernando! I love the special edition packaging of this one and I think it’s wonderful that they did an EdP version of this. I would love to try it to see if I would notice the artichoke like you did. I was so hoping to try Kyoto but I think I missed my chance. My favorite Diptyque is the classic Philosykos. Thanks for the draw. US

  • I am anxious to try this, I adore Fabrice’s work. I think I have about 5 fragrances of his and all but one are from Diptyque. A wintery rose sounds good. I love to go to the rose garden in Portland Oregon. My favorite from Diptyque would have to be Eau Duelle as it was my first fragrance when I started my journey. Must be the year of the rose as another big brand I see is doing a limited edition rose collection. I haven’t added a new rose fragrance to my collection for quite some time, maybe this is the year. Thanks for the chance. USA

  • I enjoyed the use of lots of poetry in this review as well as the detailed description of the new eau de parfum. I really like Eau Rose EdT and a richer EdP version sounds delicious. My current favorite from Diptyque is L’Ombre dans L’Eau for its juicy blackcurrant note. Thanks for taking us along your journey of roses – MA, USA.

  • Rose is a very distinguished note which I adore, that`s why when I read that the fragrance focuses on this note, I loved it immediately. Would love to try it and have it my own. This review was so interesting because it explained us the concepts of the fragrance and what it expresses.
My favorite Dyptique fragrance is Eau des Sens.
    I live in the U.S.

  • A very interesting take on a rose centric fragrance. I’ve never seen litchi and chamomile used in combination with rose. The perceived artichoke sounds wild, I’m sure it brings an intriguing vegetal note to the composition. Favorite Diptyque is Tam Dao. MD, USA.

  • A winter rose is such a nice surprise and this one is interesting with its litchi base. Hernando’s description of the anniversary releases is pretty cool, too. And those displays! Beautiful! I haven’t tried Diptyque yet, but would love to start with Eau Rose Eau de Parfum. I’m in the US.

  • I thought the best part of the review is when it is explained that the rose is not a powdery note rather a romantic version, i think this is a important distinction to make when rose essential note in a fragrance as the difference makes a large difference in the feel of the fragrance.

My favorite from Diptyque is Oud Palao

  • I love Diptyque! While not all their scents suit me I’ve not come accross one I don’t appreciate. I’m currently getting to know my sample of Eau Capitale which is gorgeous rose chypre. My favorite of what I’ve tried so far is Oud Palao but they are all of such great quality, I want to try them all. I’m intrigued by the artichoke note in this. In US.

  • I have sampled this scent and it’s wonderful! So refreshing but gentle, fresh rose scent. Almost mouthwatering! And I love the candles, although lighting 4 candles as once seems ultra decadent! I love reading that there’s some upcycling with this scent. My favorite Diptyque scent is Kyoto. So unusual but sophisticated. It’s like nothing else. I’m in the US.

  • Wow this is quite a wonderful review Hernando and pays proper homage to the queen of flowers 🙂 It immediately caught my attention since Diptyque Eau Rose EDT happens to be my favorite from the house and was an instant hit between my partner and I. I also have Do Son but that one had to grow on me. The EDP would no doubt be a hit as well and we’re grateful for the opportunity to try it out in the giveaway. USA

  • Love the way Hernando describes the lovely notes. Love Roses one of my favorite notes. The pack

  • Love the way Hernando describes the lovely notes. Love Roses one of my favorite notes. The packaging is beautiful. Great review. Definitely would love to have this in my collection. Thank you for this Chance. USA

  • Hernando!!!❤️❤️ What a wonderful review!!! I am fascinated by the limited release candles & the idea of being able to burn the component parts of the scent separately and together! I’ve never heard of a candle release like this!!! I immediately want them! ❤️ The perceived artichoke must be quite strong as 1 of the 4 candles is “artichaut” – so interesting. I have not actually made it to the fragrance side of this brand yet (though my home is full of their candles). Perhaps this will be my lucky opportunity to start! It seems 2022 will be the year of the rose. I’ve heard that botanists have been cultivating really interesting scent profiles in rose flowers. Thank you for the opportunity! USA ❤️

  • While reading this review, I was very taken by Diptyque commitment to sustainability and off course by the beautiful poem. There is no doubt that roses are a key component in the elaboration of perfumery and beauty products, their scents is one of those gifts that keep on giving and another wonder of nature.
From Diptyque I have many favorites ones but Eau Capitale and Eau Duelle are two of the ones I know well and love the most. I haven’t had the pleasure to sample Eau Rose yet but just for the notes I know I’ll love it. Thank you for the opportunity to participate in this draw. Commenting for Orlando, Fl.

  • Another beautifully perceptive article by Hernando Courtright! Hernando, it was great spending time with you at our Sniffapalooza X Dipyque Art of Gifting event, and stopping to smell the roses with you. As a lifelong rose fragrance lover, I’m jonesing for the new Eau Rose EDP, & hope to add it to my collection soon! Making room on my vanity table next to my other Diptyque faves: Tam Dao, Eau Duelle, Venise, L’Ombre Dans L’eau and Eau Capitale. Many thanks to Michelyn & Hernando for continuing to dazzle us with the wonder that is Cafleurebon! xoxo

  • I liked Hernando’s description and history of different rose perfumes, and the poem inquiring why it doesn’t rain roses. I am not familiar with artichoke note, nor with the large variety of roses that are there. My favorite Diptyque perfume is Oud Palao, the only one I have tried. It’s also interesting to note that Diptyque uses the Damascena rose water, in its commitment to sustainability. Thanks for the review and draw of Diptyque Rose Eau de Parfum. I’m in the USA.

  • Okay, I have to try a perfume if it contains an artichoke note 🙂 What a beautifully unique take on rose! I suppose I wouldn’t expect anything less from Diptyque. I have many favorites from the house but Tam Dao is top of the list. I live in Indiana.

  • Eau Rose sound so beautiful with notes of Damascena and Centifolia, Camomille, and Litch…oh my goodness…but the artichoke note really intrigues me. I can’t wait to get my nose on this wonderful creation. Speaking of creations, I’m really interested to smell the combination of all 4 candles, each representing a note of Eau Rose..A really cool concept for sure. USA

  • I enjoyed hearing about the candles as well as the note of artichoke. I love Oud Palao and would also love to win the giveaway draw for Eau Rose to join my collection here in the US…

  • A non-powdery rose? I’m here for it. I love the concept of “winter rose”.

Eau de Lierre (discontinued?) is my favorite diptyque with Tam Dao a close second. Curious to try Kyoto and the newer releases.

    USA!

  • My favorite Diptique is the Eau Rose edt so I would love to know the new edp version. Thank you for sharing the beautiful display pictures from your shopping trip. The artwork alone is gorgeous. The scent notes sound very intriguing.

  • Hernando’s description of the rose garden in Pasadena makes me want to go to there. It reminded me how much I love botanical gardens and that I should go more often. They are such wonderfully calm places. Vetyverio is probably my favorite from Diptyque

  • I so much enjoyed Hernando’s beautiful article on the New Eau Rose, though I love the old one, a new limited anniversary edition sounds spectacular! The gorgeous pictures of roses and other florals, stimulated my need for spring. The beautiful Rose poem by George Eliot or Mary Ann is a great edition, Hernando. My favorite fragrance by Diptyque is Eau Capitale which is another rose beauty. I would be honoured to have this new one. Thank you California

  • Richard Potter says:

Eau Rose edt was my very first Diptyque purchase (it seems so long ago) and I always loved it. I must get my hands on this one!

It’s a lovely review, Hernando, and I enjoyed the illustrations and poetry. I’ve been craving a new rose scent for weeks now. The candles are a cool and novel idea, though four diptique candles are not in the Covid-shutdown budget at present, alas. USA

  • Thank you for the informative review and lovely pictures! I really enjoy Diptyque’s visual esthetic and like a number of their scents. My favorite is Tam Dao. This new rose one sounds interesting and I would love an opportunity to smell it.

  • “especially the rose, the “queen of the flowers”
    The one ,and only Queen
“Crafted by Master Perfumer Fabrice Pellegrin the 2021 Winner of the Prix Francois Coty, who specializes in rose scents, and is the creator of a number of iconic Diptyque scents (such as Do Son and Eau Duelle) ”

Eau Duelle, EDP is nice , kind of old school , not gourmandish vanilla .
I know we’re discussing Fabrice Pellegrin fragrances, still the most iconic Diptyque rose fragrance to me is Oud Palao .
Eau de Rose both the EDT and EDP i don’t know, but I’m expecting classical French perfumery rose , with romantic DNA.
    My favorite Diptyque fragrances are:
    1. Benjoin Bohème
    2. Oud Palao
    3. Philosykos EDT/EDP
    Thanks a lot
    USA

  • I’m a fan of Diptyque. One of my favs is Geranium Odorata. I love roses. And, like this article mentions, there are so many unique types, that it’s easy to find a favorite fragrance for oneself. Thanks for another awesome article and draw. Mich USA

  • Michael Prince says:

What I enjoyed about Hernando’s report and review is learning about the legendary french perfume brand Diptyque and their 60th anniversary celebration and the release of their new fragrance Eau De Rose EDP. It sounds like a vast improvement over the powdery rose EDT iteration released 10 years ago. The EDP has a cozier romantic rose along with artichoke, litchi, and chamomile which sounds quite amazing. My favorite Diptyque fragrance is Eau Duelle. I am from the USA.

  • That’s incredible that Fabrice Pellegrin actually specializes in rose fragrances. I love rose dominant perfumes. I like the added notes of litchi and chamomile to give it a more cozy feel.
I have never owned any Diptyque fragrances but I did have a sample of one that was a fig fragrance. It is gorgeous.
    I live in the USA.

  • wallygator88 says:

Thanks for the great review, Hernando.

Diptyque has been producing a number of fantastic fragrances steadily over the years, the latest for me being Oud Palao.

I love rose and the herbal and green nature of this fragrance is fascinating, in particular the perceived artichoke note. It’s all too common to find rose, saffron and oud and this is a refreshing change.

I’m very curious to know how the candles compare in scent to the fragrance.

    Cheers from WI, USA

  • I have ti admit I’m not familiar with Diptyque fragrances, guilty as charged
Hernando take on Eau Rose Eau de Parfum reminded me of making Lychee Rose Cupcake , and later eating a few somewhere in the woods ⛰
Appreciate the review, and the giveaway campaign

I still have not sampled any fragrances from this house. I love the idea of the four candles for each note of the perfume to be burned together. What a great idea! I’m also really interested in that artichoke note you perceived! Thanks for the draw. From the US.

  • Usually I’m looking for fragrances like Eau Rose Eau De Parfum , when I’m not in a good mood . Lots of roses, and chamomile combination is suited for such situations.
I know just a few Diptyque fragrances, and own Tam Dao , awesome sandalwood scent
    Nice giveaway, USA
    Regards

  • I appreciate learning more about the fragrance house Diptyque, and about perfumer Fabrice Pellegrin- I didn’t know that he specializes in rose scents. Lately, I’ve been enjoying certain rose-prominent fragrances, and I’d like to try this one too. I still haven’t tried any Diptyque fragrance releases, but I’d like to try them all. I live in the U.S.A. Thanks for the giveaway opportunity.

  • Cold windy weather, I’m at home looking through the window, and enjoying the view, and the bouquet of roses my husband brought me . That’s the picture Hernando drew in my mind. Eau de Rose is so romantic and welcoming.
    My favorite Diptyque is Phylosykos
    Thanks for the draw
    USA

  • One of my favorite notes is rose, love how Hernando describes Diptyque’s Eau Rose eau de parfum as being a cozier and more romantic version. Very intrigued by the artichoke note. Maurice Harris’s polychromatic portrait recreation is beautiful along with all the picture displays and the lovely poetry in the article. I haven’t tried any from Diptyque’s, but would love to experience Master Perfumer Fabrice Pellegrin’s Eau Rose eau de parfum because as Hernando stated, a winter rose is a beauty to behold and this one is no exception. Thank you for this giveaway opportunity. USA

  • IvanVelikov says:

Diptyque Eau de Rose Eau de Parfum I think is comforting, and easy to wear rose fragrance i’d wear all year round .
I was not aware of the upcycled process Diptyque are using , it added to the review.
34 boulevard Saint Germain Eau de Parfum is my favorite Diptyque fragrance
    Thank you Hernando and Diptyque

Wonderful review Hernando! What I enjoyed about Hernando’s report and review was learning that it’s a richer and more intense rose than it’s original predecessor the Eau Rose EDT which was released 10 years ago. A strong, intense non-powdery rose, with the unusual and unconventional note of artichoke, sounds like the perfect interpretation for this unusual winter rose release. My favorite Dipytque release is L’Ombre dans l’Eau, a gorgeous steel green fragrance with another intriguingly different rose in the center. I live in the US.

  • “it is a mixture comprised of the original Damascena and Centifolia roses, as a tribute to its sister scent, but M. Pellegrin gives us a richer and more intense aroma as an update to its predecessor, the Eau Rose EDT.”

Interesting, most Diptyque EDP’s are not just richer , and more intense versions of the EDT’s , but also different to certain extent. Eau Duelle,Tam Dao,L’Ombre Dans L’Eau and Philosykos EDP’s differ the most in my opinion , compared to the EDT’s.
What i find appealing in Eau de Rose EDP is how it’s both serene , and playful at the same time.
My favorite Diptyque is Oud Palao. I also wanted to try Kyoto, but it’s not available anymore, and resellers are already asking double the price on Ebay
I don’t have lychee, so I’ll make me some Strawberry Chamomile Paloma cocktail now
Cheers everyone , and thank you for the opportunity
