CURATA DULCEO Review (Serena Rogers and Beckie Sheloske) + Sustainable Luxury Perfume Draw

Independent creative and botanical perfumer Beckie Sheloske has taken up the olfactory baton for Montréal-based CURATA, a sustainable luxury venture created by founder and creative director Serena Rogers. The name comes from the Latin verb “ad curare” – “to care for”. CURATA is invested in creating hedonistically pleasurable cruelty-free products which multi-task: one gets to have the cake and eat it too. To date there are two products intended to stand alone or be combined as the mood/need suits: a multi radiance oil, AUREO and botanical perfume extract, DULCEO. While I’ve not yet had the opportunity to sample AUREO – a vanilla, white grapefruit and tuberose-scented face/body/bath/everything beauty treatment laden with exquisite oils  – Serena recently sent me a sample of CURATA DULCEO, a natural exotic floral gourmand  perfume which actually leaves the skin feeling softer on contact (this isn’t in a press release; I discovered it upon application).  When I peruse the ingredients, I’m not surprised: skin-loving olive squalane and coconut oil are present in its formula. I can only imagine what the flesh wafts and feels like when AUREO and DULCEO present in tandem.

Tropical and beachy are not synonyms; mention the first and there may be an instantaneous association with sun-warmed skin, sand, salt, water. CURATA DULCEO is tropical in that its components primarily derive from warmer climes and don’t evoke dallying with suntan oil. There are exceptions to every rule: materials such as violet leaf are frequently sourced from Egypt (only southern Upper Egypt is tropical!); cassie is usually French or Egyptian in origin. Caramel and butter may come from anywhere, likewise sweet orange – and Morocco (neroli) is not classified as a tropical country.

Every other fruit or flower sings of the luxurious swelter in which such precious plants thrive, and their mellifluous voices whisper from the far reaches of India, Madagascar, Réunion, Southeast Asia, Sumatra, the South Pacific…distant locales of the fevered imagination (unless you’re fortunate enough to live there). There’s not a smidgen of coconut to be found, no Calone smell-alikes. Not that you’ll miss them, I’ll warrant – because there is abundant exoticism to enjoy.

CURATA DULCEO is sweet and sensuous; it refuses to "Kill By Cloying", however. Yes, the base teems with unctuous notes: vanilla, caramel, butter. Benzoin has several attributes besides being a gooey resin – subtle spices and a woody tonality contribute nuance, and that’s a positive. Furthermore, the tang of guava and neroli counterbalance, palmarosa – an Indian grass fragrant with a verdant/rosy/lemon scent profile feels entirely welcome and somewhat tonic. Tuberose and jasmine grandiflorum, cassie with its furred acacia spice, honeyed underbelly: each one hints, just the merest insinuation – of their animalic nature.

Frangipani is simply full of succulent joy, brazenly floral and spicy, creamy. At the base of the pillar is the darkest cocoa note I have smelt in awhile – lurking beneath these layers of sweetness, deep and mysterious: it lingers. I hope that you can imagine the aromatic path where these components lead – it’s a generous, openhearted place where stinting is not an option. Time proceeds at a leisurely pace. Our real lives very rarely follow this trajectory, admittedly. There is a measure of grace inherent in wearing a perfume that has been conceived to do good, feel good, smell good – sans guilt. It’s soothing, lovely, intimate. CURATA may just be onto something…

Notes: sweet orange, Moroccan neroli, guava, palmarosa, tuberose, frangipani, Indian jasmine grandiflorum, cassie flower absolute, violet leaf, vanilla, caramel, cocoa, butter extract, benzoin

Sample kindly provided by Serena Rogers – thank you!  My nose is my own…

  • I loved the description of the brand and that this fragrance is skincare as well as a fragrance, its natural and sustainable. But I really loved Ida's descritption of this scent that its tropical an is made up of so many notes from the mid east, and that their is no tanny smell to it, this is a fragrance that I can really dive into! I live in the USA and Happy Earth Day!

This is a beautiful description of a sweet, exotic fragrance that I would love to try. I am especially curious about the dark cocoa note that persists. I live in the USA. Thank you for the opportunity!

  • I liked the fact that this perfume is almost like a treatment for the skin, having such an unctuous texture. Also, the gourmand notes together with all those different kinds of white flowers must blend in a wonderful way. Happy Earth day and thank you for the draw! I’m from Finland.

I love Ida's in depth description, highlighting hwo the scent differentiates itself from other scents in the same family. It highlights how the scent is more for striking out on it's own, luxuriating in it's own place and niche. I'm in the usa.

  • redwheelbarrow says:

This sounds so interesting – a fragrance that has skin benefits and not the other way around. I love the idea of that dark cocoa note lurking in the background beyond all of the floral joy. I would love to try this one. Thanks again for the giveaway. I'm in the US.

My wife would love Curata Dulceo with its creamy and floral gourmand notes. I'm in the USA.

  • A very lovely and interesting fragrance description, especially since i am inlove with tropical fragrances and feelings 🙂 i would definitely want to try it on my skin, since there is also a moisurising effect along with the amazing fragrance. I am from uk

Based on Ida's review, I can say that by using this fragrance I will only do good, feel good, smell good, sans guilt.

I can't wait for trying it!

    I live in EU.

  • Since I am pregnant, this scent sounds so delicious on every level! The natural elements and skin benefits would be amazing as well! My daughters would adore smelling this on me as much as I would! I'm in the US. Thanks!

  • Gotta love those notes, sounds really nice. Great review as always, i would love to try this juice, thank you for the chance, i am in the EU.

Dulceo is fruity floral but also has animalic feel. It seems a rich composition, being extract. I am in US

  • Ida’s choice of pictures and words is always brilliant. The colorful, minimalistic paintings by Matisse, as well as attributes such as “luxurious”, “abundant” “fevered” really work great in portraying the concept of this solar, explosive scent. Image, word and probably smell go so well together. I would love to own this beauty. Thanks for the draw! i’m from Romania.

  • NiceVULady says:

I really enjoyed the inclusion of the pieces from Henri Matisse.  It seemed to underscore the nature of the fragrance that Ida so beuatifully described.  I love the notes and the richness of the fragrance.  I look forward to trying it.  Thanks for the draw and a lovely review.  I'm in the USA

  • Happy Earth Day! Ah, it's good to hear that the fragrance is sweet but not cloying! The dark cocoa (not chocolate!) was really what drew me in to it. This fragrance sounds so appealling…a twist on what I usually wear.

Thanks for the giveaway. I live in the USA.

  • Whoa! What an interesting blend of fragrance notes! Soapy clean, floral and gourmand rolled into one! I would absolutely love to smell this one!

    I live in the USA.

  • roxhas1cat says:

A fragrance that leaves the skin softer….bonus!!  I really said "Wow" when I read that Ida says it's the darkest cocoa she's smelled in awhile.  The first perfume to get the "madesafe" seal, that's interesting.  I would love to win this, thanks for the chance!!  USA.

  • I enjoyed the full description of the perfume and also the visuals. I love floral perfumes.

    I live in California.

  • DulciusExAsperis says:

Sounds gorgeous and I am happy that it includes squalane, which is something I actually use on my face and really like, so it'll be nice to know that I'm taking care of skin on other parts of my body as well! I live in the US.

  • This fragrance sounds like a wonderful summer scent. I like that it's ingredients are natural and cruelty free. USA

  • The review is so enjoyable as always. And this perfume sounds absolutely amazing. The notes are sounds so wonderful, I know that I would very love this fragrance. Thank you for the chance. I live in the EU.

  • doveskylark says:

The combination of notes and oils sounds like something I'd love to wear when I am in Brazil, not stinting on anything, time just passing leisurely.  How interesting to combine benzoin with guava and frangipani.

    I love in the USA.

  • Before I give my 2 cents I have to say bottle looks really good.  Usually small indie houses use same old 20 cents bottles with cheap stickers . Cap looks good too.

If there's gourmands I'm interested . CURATA DULCEO sounds really good- floral gourmand , yet sophisticated and not your run of a mill cheap sugary smell .

Vanilla , caramel and butter  – that's me . As a Pastry chef I use all 3 every day . I curious how well,  and realistically to the the products CURATA DULCEO smells . According to Ida Meister the notes should be implemented the right way.

Thank you Ida for the great review.

  • What a lovely review of a most intriguing product! I have only barely dipped my toe into the world of perfume oils, so I appreciated this introductory review of a line that is new to me.

I am very curious about the combination of gourmand, tropical and animalic notes Ida has described. I adore the combination of these in Tropic of Capricorn, though I imagine CURATA DULCEO to be a bit more likeable to the general public and thus more wearable IN public! 🙂

Thanks for the excellent review. I'm from the US.

What a dilicious review . Floral , spicy , vanilla , caramel , dark coco – should be a happy and uplifting fragrance .

After a recent health scare, I have become very conscious about what I put in my body, on my skin, and also what I inhale.  I am thankful for artists like Serena, who have our best interests in mind, and look forward to testing both Aureo and Dulceo.  Thank you for the draw, I live in the US.

  • tuiu silver says:

Ida has a very particular way to describe the notes and transitions from a fragrance.
What I liked the most about this review is how she explained the sensuous "feelings" that Curata Dulceo has, with the flowers and fruitty nuances being supported by some creamy and sweet based notes, with a lot of depth and complexity on the drydown.

I'm from US and would like to join the draw please.

  • I love that this is described as a exotic floral Gourmand and the cocoa note is what I really love. I love Gourmand so much, and my kids love when I wear them to!

    I live in the USA.

  • I love frangipani and don't really have that note represented in many of the fragrances I own. This sounds like one I'd like to try. I live in USA

  • IvanVelikov says:

Mouthwatering review . Props to  Ida Meister for the nice job.

I could be wrong , but I have a feeling CURATA DULCEO was made to mirror the smell of Italian Iced Orange Cookies with caramel I buy from my local patisserie shop. The cook is Italian born , and he said he did not made the recipe , but it’s some really old one from the region he came from.

The smell is fantastic– buttery , caramel , orange , cocoa and something flowery he chose not to tell.

If CURATA DULCEO is anything close to the cookies I love I will 100% buy it.

  • I love the Matisse artwork used in Ida's review, it really helped me to get a better idea about this fragrance-and I'm also interested in a perfume that helps skin feel softer-perfect for the dry heat in Arizona, USA.  Thanks for the giveaway.

  • An excellent review by Ida! I love that this isn't just a beautiful, but it also has some skincare as well. Ida has truely peaked my curiousity with the dark cocoa note. Gourmand fragrances I love and I am sure that Curata Dulceo will be no exception. Thanks for the giveaway and I live in the US!

This perfume is so juicy and Ida's description is excellent. I would love to try this on my skin. Thanks!

  • Great review as always from Ida. The notes in this fragrance sound juicy and delicious at the same time. I have a sweet spot for Gourmands fragrances, Curata Dulceo sounds awesome. I live in CA, USA! Happy Earthday!

  • Beautiful review from Ida!   Love gourmand fragrances and with all the Mattisse paintings!  Love the article and looking forward to trying Curata Dulceo!  Thank you for the chance.USA

  • Ida got us all with this :

At the base of the pillar is the darkest cocoa note I have smelt in awhile – lurking beneath these layers of sweetness, deep and mysterious: it lingers.

Wonder what kind of cocoa will give Ida such an impression. Also floral and spicy, creamy floral gourmand description intrigues me a lot….even though i'm on a diet Lol.

    Thanks a lot.

  • Based on Ida's review what I find truly appealing is the natural elements and skin benefits of the fragrance on one's skin not to forget to mention the gourmand note of dark cocoa combined with creamy florals.

Thank you for the lovely review.  I live in EU.

I had the privilege of trying this wonderful botanical, fruity, gourmet fragrance and meeting Serena. She is very inspired and it is reflected in her perfume, so distinctive and sublime. Whenever I wear it, I feel beautiful; people come near and have only good words to say about it. Ida made an excellent description of what Dulceo is. I did not think of describing it as tropical, but I agree. I would also say that it makes me feel a bit like an amazon, as if nothing could resist me! I wish you the same luck as me to wear it. I'm from Montreal.

    Thank you Ida Meister

  • This is another interesting review from Ida. Thank you for the review as well as the opportunity to win a bottle of Curata Dulceo. This sounds like quite the cosmopolitan fruity cocktail of a fragrance and I’d love to try it. I’m in TX USA

  • Sophisticated gourmand- that’s how I see it. Floral with orange, caramel , butter and vanilla and guava. Are we gonna baker a cake here? I like it’s not a over sweetened bomb. There’s time and place for club fragrances, and there’s time for fragrances you wear for your own pleasure, or for cuddling. That how I feel about Curata Dulceo. Thx you . USA most of the year, and Germany from time to time

  • First time hearing of this and pretty cool that it’s also good on the skin. Sounds like a good feeling type of fragrance. Thanks for the giveaway, US

Lovely review ! Thank you Ida.
Congratulations being amongst the finalists in Art and Olfaction Awards 2019 !
I appreciate the company's promotion of sustainability and their cruelty free products.
I enjoyed how Ida described it as a natural exotic fragrance, but without the beachy, suntan oil vibe. The fact that is acts as a skin products too, is even better.
    Happy Earth Day !
