Cannes 2023 Fragrance Event Report Part 1 + A Perfume Travelogue Giveaway

Cannes 2023 Perfume event was held October 1st -5th

Skylines at Cannes 2023 by Danu Seith Fyr

It is always a joy to travel back to the south of France and revel for a few brief moments in the world apart that is the Cote d’Azur. Time still exists in a warp here, albeit a little jaded by modernity’s race.  You can still sense the taste and scents of a heyday, embraced by vast numbers of super yachts at play and at anchor and nothing diminishes the night’s bustle of café and restaurant life in Le Suchet or the endless sunrises and sunsets viewed from a rooftop unchanged through all of Cannes’s incarnations. In part one, I bring you my impressions and the highlights of Cannes Fragrance Event 2023.

It captures you, with its atmosphere of refined wealth and relaxation and is the perfect backdrop to meet with perfume brands and friends alike, the meeting of new acquaintances, and the inevitable evening adventures of parties and shared dinners. I was visiting Cannes 2023 as the representative of ÇaFleureBon and also in my own right as a perfume writer at Profumiscribe. Cannes for me consists primarily of events and meetings outside of the TWFA ( October 1-5, 2023) and often as its a forum designed for retailers and distributors, I am privy to upcoming releases, some of which I cannot mention by name yet, so please forgive me the little occasional tease without betraying confidences, for I am known to be good at keeping secrets!!

I had arrived in Cannes on September 29th earlier than usual as I had received  through ÇaFleureBon, a generous invitation from AKRO and Olivier and Anais Cresp to attend an afternoon launch of their new release, RISE.  This launch took place at Villa Botanica, the Firmenich villa high above Grasse in the Provençale hills. It was a gloriously hot afternoon when we arrived and the welcome was just as warm.  It was a great pleasure for me to meet the legendary perfumer Olivier Cresp in person and his daughter Anais. We had time upon arrival to spend time with RISE and the complete collection of AKRO- Awake, Dark and Smoke being particular favorites of mine. Cocktails and a delicious array of aperitifs were provided and we had the opportunity to wander the beautiful gardens and take in the breathtaking views. In two groups we were then given the opportunity to explore the Villa Botanica gardens and green house in the company of Antoine, the botanist and person responsible for growing such an exotic array of plants including cinnamon, frangipani, patchouli and cacao.  Afterwards we took refuge from the afternoon heat inside with Christophe, a truly passionate and knowledgeable tropical botanist who took us through a wide array of raw materials including several within the composition of RISE, a fragrance full of jazz at the height of summer in the midst of Notting Hill Carnival. Warm and inviting, it carouses on heated winds and sultry scents. The afternoon concluded with further refreshments and the chance to mingle and converse, dancing of course. I discovered in conversation with Olivier, our mutual love of wines and the environment of vineyards, something to be continued over a good red wine or three in the future!!!  We were gifted an exclusive bottle of RISE, decorated by a talented UK artist based in Brighton, Mister Phil @misterphildraws. An exceptional day of new people and perfumed explorations. My thanks to Olivier, Anais, Angela and all at Akro.

Elizabeth Gaynes and Strangelove NYC at Cannes 2023

Elizabeth Gaynes and Strangelove NYC by Danu Seith Fyr@ Cannes 2023

Meeting with Elizabeth Gaynes, the Founder of Strangelove NYC and her Vice-President Simone Wicker at Cannes 2023 was indeed a great pleasure. I had purchased samples from the brand quite some time ago and had developed an affection for a number, but to be able to take the time to hear from Elizabeth herself the founding story of Strangelove NYC and its evolution was inspiring to say the least. Here are quality perfumes of great depth that include sourced raw materials from several other projects initiated by Elizabeth. When we today speak volumes about transparency and sustainability, here at the very forefront was Elizabeth in the development of Strangelove NYC,  a perfume brand with an inspiring story and a veritable dynamo at its helm. My initial investigations were upheld and SilencetheSea drifted into my heart immediately, Fallintostars and Deadofnight are too intoxicating for words, smouldering concoctions that reflect their quality of composition through and through. Pure perfumed artistry, composed by Master Perfumer Christophe Laudemiel.

Oman Luxury at Cannes 2023

Oman Luxury – Collection and new formulation Wanderlust – by Danu Seith Fyr© Cannes 2023

Oman Luxury was my next appointment after a day exploring Grasse and St Paul de Vence, visiting with Olivier Durbano and Jessica September Buchanan along with Maison Godet. Muatasim, Muadh and Ahmed from Oman Luxury were graceful and warm once again with their hospitality, wonderful discussions on future trends shared with friends and although I have already had an introduction to their collection, it was marvelous to have the time denied at Esxence 2023 in Milan, (where ÇaFleureBon is a media partner of 13 years) to explore, ask questions and to discover their new interpretation of Wanderlust. With a vibrancy unparalleled it has been changed to illuminate nature distilled, the fig and clary sage at its heart are captivating, such a depth of green tones. I still have many firm favorites to explore further, Dejan, Voyage and Paramour to name a few.  Frankincense of course played a central role and was not only lit for our pleasure but offered to chew as it has many benefits for health. We were also served an Omani Halwa dessert, quite frankly delicious.

Tanguy Le Baud - Art Meets Art

Tanguy Le Baud – Art Meets Art – Danu Seith Fyr© at Cannes 2023

I learned of Tanguy Le Baud, the founder of Art Meets Art, while reading a recent ÇaFleureBon article by J Weariscent on Lilac Wine which piqued my curiosity. When Michelyn had asked me meet with Tanguy, I was more than happy to. Tanguy is a passionate advocate for his brand and his art and we spent a very pleasant time in conversation finding many points of common interest. The brand sets out to provide the perfume and music lover with a point of convergence, taking for the collection iconic pieces of popular music, music that gets into your soul and that everyone knows in one form or another. Four at present songs that we all know and giving that brief to certain well-known perfumers. As Tanguy says it’s like a perfumed playlist for this above all is his motto, he wants people to have fun and to play with the perfumes and the music depending on their mood. From the original four I have to say Sexual Healing was my choice, but who wouldn’t say that!!! There is a new version of an existing perfume in the collection due to be released and watch out for it, it’s just a very potent seduction and one I personally will wish to be wearing. Art Meets Art is an authentic and exciting collection and Tanguy is its captain full of enthusiasm and passion.

Sabine Schaffer - Plume Impression

Sabine Schaffer and Plume Impression by Danu Seith Fyr© at Cannes 2023

Plume Impression was a first for me, I had of course heard about the brand and read certain reviews on ÇaFleureBon but this meeting, a chance one for me, thanks to Elizabeth at Strangelove NYC was eye-opening.  Sabine Schaffer and husband Gabriel were warm and inviting and spent a lot of time with me to introduce their collection which is testament to their love and also to their memories of travelling, given wings by the flight of a feather that invites us to join it on its flight to many lands and intimate surroundings.  Once again conversations swirled, given impetus by the very stories of the perfume itself and we all found ourselves amongst common passions and interests. Certainly, voyages may be taken together. A beautifully crafted collection utilizing the creative talents of many highly regarded perfumers, Sabine and Gabriel’s inspirations take flight, during our lengthy meeting we were joined by Perfumer Marc Daniel Heimgartner and I was invited to take part in an evaluation session for future projects. Several of the collection spoke to me including Elegance Cuiree by Jorge Fernandez– refined and sophisticated with an edge of suave danger.

A small interlude – as always thanks to the kindness of Mert Guzel and Murat Katran I received my invitation to the Nishane party. A superb event in the magnificent location of a beachfront club in Cannes. Meeting of friends and colleagues never to be missed. The meteoritic rise of Nishane since its beginnings, it has been an honour to witness as I first met them at my first Pitti Fragranze with ÇaFleureBon in 2016.  We are thrilled by their success which has been the result of hard work and dedication. I was excited to learn the name of the perfumer for their next project and shall be waiting withheld breath, it will be magnificent but my lips are sealed. My sincere apologies as I handed the responsibility for taking photos to another and they were not saved to his phone – Apologies to Mert and Murat……. Next time I will be the paparazzi.

Sasva perfumes

Sriman and Sarina – Sasva- Danu Seith Fyr© at Cannes 2023

Always I am welcomed at every perfume event by the owner and team at Release Distribution, Creative Director and Founder Giovanni Castelli. Sriman and his new wife, the beautiful Sarina are with Release with their brand Sasva. A homage to his homeland of India, Sasva is a sensuous voyage in this fascinating and ancient land. I had first encountered Sriman and Sasva at Pitti Fragranze 2022.  He is now a dear friend and I follow this immense journey he is undertaking. Here are written stories woven into ancient fabrics, whispered by stones over thousands of years, not stifled by a nostalgia but crafted into modern masterpieces that voyage through India’s heart. I had already fallen for Light of the Earth and Garden of Youth; these are now joined by the new release Moha- an Indian coffee delight. Dinners are a time to relax and reflect and we were fortunate to share quality time with Sriman and Sarina.

Salum Perfumes

Salum perfumes are composed by Luca Maffei Danu Seith Fyr© at Cannes 2023

Whilst in the Release Suite, Giovanni took the time to introduce me to Salum, a brand where all the perfumes are crafted by Perfumer Luca Maffei, an interesting concept of 4 different approaches to the sea and salinity, more investigations to follow.

Kajal - III and IV and new release of Lamar Caviar - alcohol free was shown at Cannes 2023

Kajal – III and IV and new release of Lamar Caviar – alcohol free. Danu Seith Fyr© at Cannes 2023

I was welcomed as usual to the suite of Kajal with dear Moe and Nathalie, I had been introduced to the new release Masa and the new directions of the Homme Collection, now without the word ‘Homme’ and created as genderless perfumes for one and all at our brief meeting in Pitti Fragranze, I and II will undergo their relocation into the new design bottles next year but the additions of III and IV are worth writing home about. III is a joyful burst of energetic ebullience and IV is a warm embrace of heated winds.  I was already excited by these two and having the chance to spend more time was very much appreciated. I was also honoured to be asked to assist Moe and Nathalie in a short private evaluation session for future projects to be announced later. A real pleasure and privilege, next year looks to be very exciting for Kajal.

Guiseppe Imprezzabile – Meo Fusciuni and Danu Danu Seith Fyr© at Cannes 2023

A lovely private meeting over coffee at Café Armani, such a meeting place for so many during the Cannes week with my dear friends Guiseppe and Federica, Meo Fusciuni. To talk about Meo Fusciuni Viole Nere (beautifully reviewed by Nicoleta), the melancholic beauty of freshly sprung hope in violet hues, future projects and time in Liguria together. Always my heart is full when we meet.

Danu’s article was quite informative. I enjoyed how a taste of each house was presented, thus leaving me longing to learn a little more about each house. With Strangelove NYC, I was curious to learn more about their inspiring story on how they came into existence. So, I clicked on the link provided and was taken to their website. Elizabeth Gaynes’ journey from farms in Borneo to boardrooms in Geneva has allowed her to provide creations that “push the limits of perfume wearers towards something daring…making it exciting, seeing people try something that doesn’t smell like anything they’ve ever tried before.”
I’d love to try Fallintostars and be taken on an olfactory journey that I have not yet experienced 🙂

  • What sparked my interest about Danu’s Cannes 2023 report is how the founder of “Art Meets Art” sets out to provide the perfume and music lover with a point of convergence, taking for the collection iconic pieces of popular music, music that gets into your soul and that everyone knows in one form or another according to Danu Seith-Fyr. I would be happy to win Strangelove NYC fallintostars to be able to experience the raw sourced materials that go into them as well as the great depth of the perfume. Thank you for the opportunity. From New York, USA.

  • The 4 different approaches to the sea really sparked my interest. I live in Trzebnica, Poland, EU. I would be happy to win Strangelove NYC fallintostars because I never tried this house and I was alywas intrigued by it.

  • Thanks Danu for this i formative article!
I wish to be in Cannes and visit to all this beautiful places, test new perfumes.
Kajal IV sounds right for me with energetic vibes !
Love Meo Fusciuni! Dream about Strangelove.

  • This sounds like the event of a lifetime. To be embraced by some of today’s most exciting perfumers in such a glorious location is a dream come true. Congratulations and thank you for describing the event so perfectly. I would LOVE to win fallingintostars; I’m a great fan of strangelove NYC. I live in NY.

Wonderful! Thank you for such a unique and detailed report! Truly valuable insider’s perspective on the world of perfumery. I love Danu`s detailed descriptions of meeting with renowned perfume brands and their founders. Exploring new fragrances, attending exclusive events create a vivid and immersive experience for tme personally. It’s a peek behind the scenes of the fragrance industry and the connections that are formed during such gatherings.
Sasva is such an interesting new brand for me, so it was curious to read about it

Winning Strangelove NYC’s Fallintostars would be a fantastic opportunity because it’s described as an intoxicating and quality perfume. And the combination of oud and daffodils is something out of range for me, so I would be happy to try it one day. Danu’s endorsement of this fragrance in her report adds to its a magic allure.

    I am from the EU.

I would love to win fall into stars. I’ve been wanting to try it for so long. David’s trip sounds amazing. The sheer amount and variety of smells he encountered would be truly unbelievable. I live in Indiana!

Thank you for your overview, Danu, can’t wait for part II! 🙂 So lovely that you met with the creators of Meo Fusciuni, love that brand and it was Nicoleta’s review that actually put Viole Nere high on my radar. So curious about Sasva too, there are so many mentions that piqued my interest and I’m grateful for having them on my radar and getting to know about them. Never had the opportunity to sample anything from Strangelove NYC till now, fallintostars and meltmyheart were the ones that I’m the most curious about. Fallintostars sounds delicious and absolutely unique with its henna, daffodil note. I’m currently residing in Romania, Europe. Thank you! 🙂

  • I was intrigued by wondering what the perfumes were that couldn’t be mentioned by name yet. I would be happy to win fallintostars because I’ve read nothing but good things about it on these ÇaFleureBon pages. US

  • I was drawn into finding our about the story behind Strangelove NYC. I like a lot how perfected the bottles are, I really like the names and presentation. It seems they’re good with oud. I also liked Plume Impression was mentioned.
    I live in the EU.

  • Thanks for an interesting read. I particularly enjoyed learning that frankincense can also be chewed for health benefits – the chemist in me instantly wants to know what chemical compounds are present that are biologically active. Also agree that Elegance Cuiree is a standout from Plume Impression – so smooth and doesn’t fall into the smoky trap of so many leather scents these days. Thanks as well for introducing me to Salum – as a lover of salty air I feel this is another collection I need to look for.

I love Laudamiel’s work. I’ve been working my way through samples from The Zoo and recently purchased the Strangelove EDP collection – they are truly works of art, more an experience than a perfume. Sadly that collection only included the first four scents – I would be beyond happy to be able to try Fall Into Stars too and complete my collection.

    I’m in the UK.

  • What an exciting opportunity to meet with so many fantastic perfume houses. You all introduced me to Strangelove and I purchased meltmyheart oil. Now I’d love to try more of their products. In maryland.

  • Such a journey Danu Seith-Fyr had , so many new fragrances and brands I’ve never heard of before.
Akro, Strangelove NYC, Nishane and Kajal I’m a fan of, but I was not aware of Oman Luxury, Art Meets Art , Sasva and Salum.
RISE , Kajal Homme III and IV are must try fragrances for me.
If Strangelove NYC FallintoStars could have been a movie caracter fragrance, it will fit Jamie Dornan and his role as Christian Grey in 50 Shades of Grey.
    Exciting giveaway, USA

  • India’s heart. I had already fallen for Light of the Earth and Garden of Youth; these are now joined by the new release Moha- an Indian coffee delight. Dinners are a time to relax and reflect and we were fortunate to share quality time with Sriman and Sarina. A wonderful description by Danu really fascinated by this house because India and its culture is very close to my heart. I would love to win Fall into stars because I am intrigued by the notes especially Rose, Henna and Oud and the fact that I have not got any experience with this house. Thanks a million from the UK

  • and Nathalie in a short private evaluation session for future projects to be announced later. A real pleasure and privilege, next year looks to be very exciting for Kajal. A beautiful piece by Danu really fascinated by the house of Kajal. If I am lucky to win I would love to win Fall into stars the notes sound greater in particular rose, oud, henna, rosewood balsam and benzoin. This is a house that has been on my radar but I have not tried anything thusfar. Thanks a lot from the United Kingdom

  • I too fell in love with the south of France this summer! The climate, the relaxed pace of life-they really know how to enjoy life there! How do I get a job like Danu’s? Hanging out with master perfumers in Cannes, sign me up!!! I would love to win fallintostars! Thanks for the lovely write up and giveaway! In NYC

  • Max Corvinus says:

I was intrigued by the brand Oman Luxury and how they burned frankincense for you. As a massive fan of incense, I find it fascinating that people still use these magickal resins and woods even after thousands of years. I would also really love to try Meo’s Viole Nere as I am a massive violet fan.

I never tried Strangelove NYC fragrances and this one would be my first. As someone learning to be a fragrance copywriter, I must immerse myself in all the perfumes that I can get my nose on.

Hello from Florida, and thank you to Danu for the story!

The Cannes Fragrance Event sounds like it was a wonderful time — situated in the perfect setting to really appreciate the materials that go into perfume. Fallintostars seems like a scent that fully showcases its materials, and I’d love to give it a try!

  • What a fun trip and very informative article from Danu! I would have loved to meet with Oliver Cresp. He composed two of my most favorite scents; Ange ou Demon and Noa. And of course the beautiful setting at Villa Botanica in Grasse sounds lovely. I’ve sampled strangelove melt my heart but have yet to try fall into stars. I would love to receive a bottle. I’m in the US.

  • Always interesting to see and read about the brilliant minds behind these perfumeries that have been featured on other CaFleureBon blogs. Strangelove NYC has been frequently featured on the “best of” blogs and I would be happy to be able to sample fallintostars.
    TX, USA.

  • This event, hosting many different brands and independent creators sounds incredibly interesting. Sadly, I couldn’t go myself, therefore I am grateful to hear your insights on it. I have heard many rave reviews on fallintostars, both here on cafleurebon and elsewhere. It seems like a fragrance perfect for winter, so hopefully I can win and abuse it without restraint.

  • Amazing! we appreciate the detailed report! with such valuable insider’s perspective on the world of perfumery. it’s always informative getting detailed descriptions from renowned perfume brands and their founders. Since i don’t usually attent exclusive events, such reviews and interviews immerse you into Exploring new fragrances, and also brands you don’t really hear of so often such as Savsa.

Winning Strangelove NYC’s Fall into stars would be my opportunity to explore this fragrance and also the house behind its creation. not to forget the combination of oud and Narcissus
which i have never smelled before, so I would be happy to try it one day.

  • Amazing! Thank you, Danu for such a unique and detailed report!
It’s dream for me visit this places and test new perfumes in wonderful and comfortable rooms and discuss with brand managers, perfumers about beautiful world of perfumery.
I am intrigued by Plum Impressions and new Strangelove NYC!

  • Danu, nice report of your stay in Cannes at this fair in a privileged place. I must smell Rise, I’m sure I’ll like it. One of my best purchases last year was INK so the new work of the Cresp family must be delicious. As you mentioned Villa Botanica, I have taken a look at Firmenich’s website and the place must be a luxury for the senses. There are a lot of Middle East brands unknown to me, such as Oman Luxury with frankincense and oud as magical parts of their scents. Also your discovery, also new to me, is Salum with these 4 perfums by Mr. Maffei around the sea and salinity, looking forward to know more about this brand. I love the fact of Strangelove NYC works with such transparency and sustainability in their quest for raw materials as you can read it in their webpage sourcing the ingredients used with origin and production. Love Fallintostars, because has two or my most beloved notes: narcissus(jonquil) and labdanum (from Corsica, in this case, not Spain ;)). I live in Spain, EU.

Thank you for such a detailed walkthrough of your time at the Cannes 2023 Fragrance.

One of the coolest things for me was reading about Elizabeth Gaynes, who I did not know was the founder of Strangelovenyc. I had made the assumption that it was Christopher Laudmiel. Her story about working with sustainable oud plantations to bringing out perfumes using these materials is fascinating.

I’m a big fan of the ideas behind strangelovenyc and Christopher Laudmiel’s work in fragrance and fragrance education and educating consumers about materials and the fragrance industry.

Also of note were Oman Luxure and Sasva, brands that I would like to check out.

Thank you for the your article, Danu. Great to see, so many middle eastern and asian brands! I have to say, I am not familiar with many of the brands, since the middle eastern brands that are widely available where I live never really peaked my interest. It is a world, I would love to get into, though.
I would love to win a bottle of fallintostars. I have heard a lot of good things about the brand, but were not able to get my hands on a sample yet.
    Greetings from Austria, EU

  • Danu, I would have loved to visit the Villa Botanica and also meet Olivier Cresp. I have deadofnight and have always been looking forward to buying more Strangelove
    I live in the USA

  • I love this sneak peek behind the scenes of Cannes 2023! It was very cool to hear from the different perfumers and see all the photos. Almost makes me feel like I was there haha. I’d love to win fallintostars – the mixture of yellow florals and oud sounds so rich and glorious! I’m in Mn, USA.

  • I was intrigued by Danu’s Cannes 2023 report, particularly the way the creator of “Art Meets Art” aims to unite perfume and music enthusiasts through a collection of iconic songs that resonate with people’s souls, as explained by Danu Seith-Fyr. I would be thrilled to win a bottle of Strangelove NYC fallintostars to explore the authentic ingredients used and the rich depth of the fragrance. Thank you for this chance and good luck to everybody. Greetings from Florida, USA.

  • What sparked my interest about Danu’s Cannes 2023 report is from brand salum the concept of 4 different approaches to the sea and salinity. I would be happy to win Strangelove NYC fallintostars because sounds very interesting fragrance and because I have not tried any perfume from this house. I live in Europe, Greece.

  • Cannes is such a gorgeous setting and surely a joy to visit for a fragrance event. The Villa Botanica gardens and greenhouse must have been a highlight, along with small culinary moments like a taste of Halwa. The conversation with Tanguy Le Baud also sounded interesting; Art Meets Art is a clever brand concept that appeals to my interests. (I’d love to sample the line.) Curious about the sea and salinity focused Salum line as well. Thanks for the coverage, Danu.

I’m in the USA. I’d love to try Strangelove NYC fallintostars—I haven’t had a chance to try any of the line’s fragrances yet and this one’s combination of rosewood, amber, and the brand’s famously-excellent ouds sounds wonderful. Thanks!

  • I applaud Danu for writing about his travels and experiences so vividly it’s almost as if I’m there! I’m struck most not by the delightful descriptions of the various fragrances, but rather by Danu’s excitement to meet and connect with all the perfumers behind the bottles. Even in (or perhaps, because of) the online age this kind of real face time is more valuable than ever.

I’ve had my eye on fallintostars for a long time. The scent notes read like a checklist of my favorite things – and to know that the brand stands behind ethical, sustainable sourcing puts my heart at ease. I would love to own this fragrance!

    Best wishes from NJ, USA!

  • What sparked my interest from Danu’s article , from the brand Sasva is that their inspiration comes from their homeland India . I would be happy to win Strangelove NYC because the combination of notes are very interesting , I live in Europe.
