Sniffapalooza Spring Fling 2023, held April 29th is the first since the pandemic and is now a one-day event with the Saturday uptown day being eliminated and the Sunday downtown day now moved to Saturday. Over the years, the weather has favored our scent treks on “scent alley” but not so today. A raw and rainy day may have greeted us but that did not put a damper to the sniffing and buying. The day begins at 10 am with an open house-style drop into the boutiques and a lunch that starts at 1:30.

Karen Adams and Karen Dubin co-founders at Malin + Goetz Sniffapalooza Spring Fling 2023

Team Karen (Karen Adams and Karen Dubin) at Malin + Goetz at Sniffapalooza Spring Fling 2023

The sting of the rainy Spring morning was mitigated by the hospitality at Malin + Goetz who hosted a light breakfast to get us in the spirit. A friendly, knowledgeable staff walked us through the extensive variety of skin, hair, and body products, and let’s not forget those astounding single-note fine fragrances.

Le Labo’sflagship store is undergoing a renovation so for the short term the operation has been downsized to their next-door Annex which normally is dedicated exclusively to the Body-Hair-Face and Men’s Grooming Collections. A must-stop for the iconic brand’s fabulous scent creations, stunning candles, and laundry wash.

At Scent Bar NYC fragrance specialist and store manager, Vijay Uttam welcomed us warmly. Their assortment of fragrances and candles is most impressive. The rain withstanding, we could spend all day here. Perfumes that caught our attention at  Sniffapalooza Spring Fling 2023 include Amouage PurposeNishane EGE / ΑΙΓΑΙΟGris Charnel Eau de Parfum by BDK ParfumsBois Impérial Essential Parfums, Parfums de Marly Delina Exclusif Extrait de Parfum. Last summer Vijay and I were discussing the changing landscape of Elizabeth Street due to the pandemic and he was happy to inform me that two new boutiques opened on the block; Korres and their sister boutique, Naxos Apothecary. After visiting both I informed Karen Dubin of these wonderful new boutiques and voila, they were now added to the rotation. Thank you, Vijay.

(on sale here)

ÇaFleureBon celebrated our 13th Year Anniversary on March 22nd. Jovoy Paris offers a CaFleureBon Editor’s Choices box to commemorate the occasion. Each Editor and Contributor was asked  by our EIC Michelyn Camen to choose a favorite fragrance from the brands they offer. I chose Tiziana Terenzi Casanova EDP. Learning that there was a presentation on a book about Casanova, as a presenter thought it would be a great way to tie in the scent for today’s event. Paolo Terenzi loved the idea and voila 65 samples were provided for the Sniffapalooza Spring Fling 2023 attendees.

My description of the scent: “How fabulous is Paolo Terenzi’s Tiziana Terenzi’s Casanova? Mesmerizingly so. This romantic beauty transports you back to Venice to the Masked Ball. The dry spicy opening and powdery note lead to a light leather that slides right up on you. The sensuality of the warm spices, musk, and cedarwood is stunning. No beast here, the silage is smooth as a skilled lover. Produced in a small handcrafted batch every year with each flacon marked with the year of production, like vintage wine. Such a compliment-getter“.

A great read! I’m so happy that people are allowed to throw awesome in -person events like this again. I would love to come to one of these in the future. A lot of great brands in this, but I’m so happy that smaller brands are there too. Thanks so much for the opportunity. From Indiana, USA

  • This report is the kind of thing that makes me wish I lived in a big city: it sounds so fun! I appreciated the range of brands represented, from the very well known and established to the new and small batch. Thanks for this fun report and giveaway!
    I’m in WV, USA

  • Brad Woolslayer says:

I enjoyed reading about Olfactory NYC, where fragrances can be customized to each customer’s needs. I’ve been wanting to try fragrances from D.S. & Durga, so it’s good that they are included in the sample giveaway. I live in Maryland USA.

  • I enjoyed most looking at the photos. Never been to a show, excited to get my hands on some Initio. US

  • Half-Pint says:

Goodness, I wish the cities near me would have such events. I never have the opportunity to attedn such things around here. I love that so many smaller houses are given some exposure at these things as well. I appreciate Hernando’s effort in giving us a small taste of so many different brands. it had to be a lot to keep up with. Of the ones talked about here, I would be most excited to try Thameen and LilaNur. Though I have experience with some older D.S. & Durga scents, I haven’t tried anything from the last few years so I’d like to get my nose on some of their more recent releases as well. I am in Virginia, USA.

  • I’m really hoping to be closer to a big city so my husband and I will have the pleasure of going to one of these! We have been very lucky to meet the creators of scents like Mind Games and Xerjoff, some of our favorite brands. I’ve been so interested in meeting the creator of Le Labo and have been itching to get my hands on a good summer scent like their Matcha. Love that events like this are taking off again!!! Can’t wait to participate :^)

  • Bonnie Beck says:

Wow, what a fragrance lover’s dream! I enjoyed reading about the various events in New York. There are so many new fragrances I am dying to try, especially LilaNur Fragrances and the new scents from D.S & Durga. I live in the US.

  • I have never had the pleasure of attending a Sniffapalooza, though it sounds like an absolute dream and bucket list item!
Korres’ Yoghurt Cleanser is a personal favorite from their skincare line, but I haven’t had the chance to try any of their fragrances yet.
I can recall Euphorium Brooklyn’s Chocolatl receiving lots of rave reviews a couple of years ago, but I never got around to sampling it. Maybe this will be my second chance to sample the brand’s offerings!
DS&Durga’s Pistachio also piqued my interest. I don’t think I have any fragrances in my collection with a pistachio note, so I’m sure it would be a standout and something I’d reach for time and time again this spring/summer.
Thanks to Hernando for capturing the splendor of this event and for the numerous brands participating in this supremely generous sample draw!

  • Oh boy, I would adore to go to the Sniffapalooza. This is the first time that I read something about this amazing event, but next year I will surely attend it.
The thing I love the most about Sniffapalooza is how perfumers and founders of different brands can interact with people and how they present and explain their creations, just amazing.
I would love to put my nose on Diptyque fragrances, since I have heard a lot from them.
    Virginia, USA.

  • John Michael Jones says:

I’ve never attended an event of this nature but what a dream come true it would be! I really enjoyed how so many different noses came together to share in the passion of fragrance. What I wouldn’t have given to be a fly on the wall. It’s events like this that give birth to new & exciting ideas to grow &/or keep this wonderful hobby alive! Good luck from Boston!

  • I did not realize Korres has been in business for so long as I first heard about it only few years ago. Interesting to learn there is a new house from Oklahoma called Utopia House. I am in US.

  • sillage4ever says:

Such a kaleidoscope of options, I appreciate being taken along for thw whirlwind! I’m most looking forward to Tiziana Terenzi and D.S. & Durga but truly it sounds like a basket of good smellz where you can hardly go wrong. Thanks for the drawing, I’m in the USA.

  • mugatzer says:

I have never been to Sniffapalooza but this sounds so fun! I love how Hernando’s descriptions made me feel like he was narrating on a guided tour of his experience there. I have been meaning to read Ghost Perfumer, so appreciated that mention, and have also been really wanting to try Ourside fragrances, as well! I live in Illinois.

  • Wow, this is quite a detailed engaging read. Some of the brands mentioned are well known to me and loved. Now I need to make my way to NYC and see these boutiques for myself 🙂 I’m most excited about Initio Parfums, Tiziana Terenzi, Diptyque and Thameen Fragrances and I’m in TX

  • Regis Monkton says:

I’m very fond of discovering fragrances which I haven’t tried yet, so I would love to attend this kind of event and I would love to win this bag of samples. I’m interested to try all of them, especially the ones from LilaNur Parfums. I love incense, so I thought it was interesting when Hernando mentioned: “Hiro Nakayama’s Japanese incense brand produces “Six in Sense” in sustainable conscious packaging with 100% natural and 1000-year-old blends.” I live in MD, U.S.A.

  • JulieeCee says:

I really enjoyed Hernando’s covering the very diverse presenters and I’m very excited about learning more about Vetiver Les Cayes and their scents. I’d never heard of Sniffapalooza before, but I would love to attend the Fall Ball coming up!

Enjoyed very much reading about this fantastic experience, especially about the many different brands showcased in this event. I hope soon enough I can attend an event like this one. I would really love to visit the Le labo boutique soon and appreciate the fact that there is a new Mizensir Soho Boutique store now in NYC. Thank you for the opportunity to participate in this draw. Commenting from Orlando, Florida. USA.

  • castlemicro says:

    Hello from Florida!

I’ve never attended a Sniffapalooza event before — I wish there were more perfumey things to do where I live! — but it was great to read Hernando’s account of everything he encountered. I’m particularly interested in trying the brands inspired by a sense of place, especially LilaNur, Vetiver les Cayes, and Naxos Apothecary. And I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention the beautiful green bag!

  • snowflake15 says:

What a great day! So jealous that you get to do these things- I hate cities but I would make an exception for events like this. I have a lil nur sample box and am loving going through it. New York State.

  • I have never attended Sniffapalooza, but I would love to someday. For now, I will live vicariously through reviews, including Hernando’s great review of Sniffapalooza Spring Fling 2023. I could definitely spend all day at Scent Bar NYC. I am glad to see Amouage Purpose listed as a favorite from 2023; I am always impressed by Amouage. Korres is such an under-looked brand when it comes to fragrances, but they really have some nice options. I was unaware of Naxos Apothecary before reading Hernando’s review, but I am very intrigued. I love that they’re natural but sophisticated. I have always wanted to create my own fragrance at Olfactory NYC, but I haven’t done so yet. Mizensir has some great offerings and I have really wanted to try Ambre Magique. I enjoy many fragrances from Diptyque and L’Eau Papier is beautiful. Although I have tried D.S. & Durga Pistachio, I have not tried Steamed Rainbow or The Carlyle. Since Steamed Rainbow was released, I knew I needed to test it eventually. I recently became aware of LilaNur Fragrances but have not been able to experience them. Rajni Nocturne, Malli Insolite, Incarnation, and Gul Rouge sound especially beautiful. Believe it or not, I have yet to try Initio Paragon although I’ve tried most from the house. I have been very interested in the combination of palo santo and plum. I had not heard of Utopia Perfume House, but I do love the idea of bespoke fragrances. It was interesting to learn of Gabe Oppenheim’s book, Ghost Perfumer. I do love to read, so I will have to look into it. Hernando mentioned another perfume house that I had not learned of, Ourside Fragrances. I think Moon Dust and Nostalgia sound particularly nice. Stephen Dirkes’ perfumery program sounds like an amazing time! I would love to attend. I really enjoy Tiziana Terenzi but haven’t smelled Casanova. It sounds quite nice though. I have been able to try various fragrances from the Abaton brands, but I have not experienced the majority of them. Overall, it sounds like Hernando had a great time at Sniffapalooza Spring Fling 2023. I would love the opportunity to win a swag bag and would be especially excited about D.S. & Durga, Euphorium Brooklyn, LilaNur Parfums, Ourside Fragrances, and Mizensir. Thank you, Hernando, for the very detailed review, and thank you for the generous giveaway. I am located in the CONUS.

  • Ken White says:

This sounds like so much fun, having the chance to go as a group and visit these unique brands. I would love to join this adventure next year as I’m right outside the city. New Jersey, USA

  • I was able to attend Sniffapalooza once, over a decade ago, when it was a two day event. So many changes and store closures since then! I am glad they are able to revive this fun event, after pausing for Covid! It sounds like they found some really interesting presentations! I was interested in the books with a perfume component and will be seeking them out! I am also excited by the curated box of scents from Jovoy for Cafleurebon’s anniversary. And I would have loved to have seen Hernando Courtwright’s presentation of Thameen! Maybe someday I’ll be there again in person!

  • johnmadison says:

Great review fulfilling a lot of my curiosity’s about different lines and locations. I have not attended a Sniffapalooza event before but man would I love to.
Really interested in getting my nose on Naxos Apothecary!

  • I really enjoyed the descriptions of all of the houses that everyone traveled to! I hope to get to a show like this someday. I am excited to try the offerings from Initio. NV, USA.

  • mmerline says:

Sniffapalooza sounds like a fun event—I’m glad it was able to return this year (I haven’t experienced it myself). I’d love to visit Scent Bar, which seems to have an astoundingly broad stock list, and try some of the in-house fragrances at Olfactory NYC. Also, speaking to the presentations, Hiro Nakayama’s work with incense sounds interesting. Excellent coverage, Hernando.

    I’m in the CON USA.

  • Teresa C says:

What a wonderful experience! Scent, New York lunch and even rum and chocolates! Sounds like a dream trip to me. I have never been to a Sniffapalooza event, though I’d love to. I would most love to try the Scent Bar NYC fragrances: I haven’t had a chance to do that.

  • Amazing report by Hernando on the news on both familiar and new fragrance houses. I’m happy to hear that Sniffapalooza is up and running again after covid and would love to be in NY to attend someday in the future to smell the different collections and fragrances being presented like Diptyque’s L’Eau Papier. It was really fun to read up about what brands are up to and also the introduction to new brands like LilaNur for me to keep an eye out for. From TX, USA.

  • I love reading the notes about Sniffaapolooza. I get to live vicariously through you all for a brief moment. Each stop and presenter is so thoughtfully documented. The notes that really caught my attention were Euphorium Brooklyn’s collab with Grenada – what an amazing trip and itinerary to experience! I really enjoyed reading about what Reggie Canal of Vetiver Les Cayes is doing with his business and seeking to sustainably help Haiti’s economy. I love to direct my limited funds to businesses with heart and integrity like that, and I appreciate the spotlight you’ve given him here. Lastly, I was so happy to read some more of what Christopher Chong is currently doing at Thameen. As an admirer of his prior extensive work at Amouage, I’m very curious to try Thameen offerings, which I have yet to get my nose on.

Thank you for the chance! I’m in PA, USA.

  • I love hearing about all the new things happening in niche perfumery! Karl’s description all of the styles and philosophies of these brands makes me excited to look into them more. I’ve never had the opportunity to attend a Sniffapalooza event but it sounds so fun that now it’s definitely a goal of mine. I’d love to win the gift bag – I’m especially interested to try LilaNur, which I’ve read about here but not been able to find, and Ourside, which people have been raving about. I’m in MN, USA.

  • I’ve never attended this event and I live in NYC. Hernando gave a thorough and exciting description making me even more upset that I didn’t attend this event. I’m most excited to try Fanfare from Thameen. All their fragrances are top shelf especially Carved Oud. I’m in NYC USA

  • roxhas1cat says:

Great to see live events……with breakfast is even better. I don’t want to live in a big city, but I when I travel I first check to see if there are fragrance shops. Nice swag bag…..I’d love to win. Thanks for the chance. Usa.

  • Love this review by Hernando detailing Sniffapalooza 2023. I haven’t had the opportunity to attend a Sniffapalooza event but I know I will in the future. The Brand and perfume that got my attention was Reggie Canal Vetiver Les Cayes with its humanitarian aspect of aiding Haitians families. Greetings from the USA.

  • wallygator88 says:

Thanks for the wonderful read. This is such a nice way to catch up with all the happenings in the perfumery world. While once can read all the articles that blogs like CFB puts out, it’s always nice to get a first person perspective.

I have never been to this event and would like to attend it sometime.

I’m very interested in Hiro Nakayama’s Japanese incense, as I’ve recently been on an incense kick.

    Cheers from WI, USA

  • sephrenia300 says:

Lovely report Hernando! what I enjoyed about Hernando’s very detailed Sniffapalooza Spring Fling 2023 report is learning that Olfactory NYC has a guided customization and personalization program that allows each scent to be styled to one’s specifications and bottled on-site. How exciting! I am always looking for personalized and tailored/bespoke scents so this sounds like something I definitely have to check out!

I have not attended a Sniffapalooza event before. The one brand I am really excited to get your nose on is LilaNur, particularly the trio of Attar Absolus. I live in the US.

  • Wow what a detailed report by Hernando. It’s great that such in-person events can be held now. There are so many brands and only one nose 🙁 While I have not attended such an event, it would be great to attend one. I’d like to try most of the brands reviewed here, but ones I definitely want to check out are – Diptyque, D.S.& Durga, Euphorium Brooklyn, Initio Parfums, and Thameen Fragrances. Thanks for the detailed report and the draw. I am from the continental United.
