Strength to strength, over the past decade, Cécile Zarokian has soared from being a perfumer to watch, to a rising star, to a luminary in modern perfumery. Ms Zarokian is not only the perfumer behind Amouage Epic Woman (and a hundred or so other fragrances), she’s an epic woman herself, an olfactive modern master. Known for her opulent and dimensional creations, Ms Zarokian is in her element when teamed with the house of Amouage. Under the creative direction of Renaud Salmon, one of Amouage’s newest projects is, paradoxically, an homage to their past, a bold re-imagining of the exclusive house staple: the attars.

Once available only at the Amouage flagship store in Oman, these highly-concentrated fragrant oils are, in the words of Mr. Salmon, “Rare, precious, and unique, they are at once modern and ancestral, rooted in a truly Omani tradition and heritage. Derived from natural ingredients and radiating ethereal beauty, they are much more than simple fragrance, they are an intimate, authentic and ritualistic custom; a signature scent of connoisseurs, and a way of self-expression that has transcended civilizations.

To reintroduce the attars, Mr. Salmon selected Cécile Zarokian along with two other master perfumers, Dominique Ropion and Julien Rasquinet, and challenged each to pair a star ingredient with an olfactive interpretation of the Omani landscape. The result is a set of six exquisite compositions which propel the medium forward while respecting its ancestral heritage: Rose Aqor, Vanilla Barka, Oud Ulya, Incense Rori,  Amouage Saffron Hamra and Orris Wakan. With the spotlight already on Cécile Zarokian, let’s examine two from the collection which bear her signature.

Amouage Attars Saffron Hamra

The images I’ve seen of the village of Al Hamra in Oman present a palate of browns and greens: houses of made of mud nestled on brick-red hills dotted with palm trees.  Amouage Saffron Hamra, with its focus on saffron, rose centifolia absolute and cade wood, may well depict the area at sunset; there’s a multi-hued glow dividing light and dark. It’s a stunning creation in the grand style of both its creator and its creative director with a complexity far exceeding the three published notes. The many individual facets of saffron, rose and cade undulate to fill the spaces between the notes, creating accords both beautifully abstract or boldly realistic, such as the sumptuous and smoky leather accords forged from the cade oil. The ultra-realistic rose, neither soapy nor grandmotherly, provides breath and light in contrast to the earthy saffron. Perhaps it’s the leather and glowing embers conjured by the cade oil, but I find something almost mystical about Saffron Hamra. It’s a gorgeous offering which, due to its complexity and powerful character, may benefit from several wearings for one to fully understand and appreciate.

amouage oud ulya

Amouage Oud Ulya, provided by Amouage©

One of my most extravagant fragrance purchases made throughout my olfactive journey was a 3-gram vial of 16-year-old pure oud oil from Borneo. In its small crystal bottle, it sits beside two other crowned jewels of my collection: Amouage Homage and Tribute attars. Amouage Oud Ulya, perhaps my favorite (among favorites) from the new attar collection, embodies much that I hold dear. The oud in this attar smells uncannily like my insanely-expensive vintage oud from Borneo! Ever-evolving, this oud assam is a perfume unto itself: herbaceous, fruity, honeyed, even a hint of ambergris. Add to this a lavish vanilla in true Zarokian style, this attar is enveloping, comforting, magnificent. Fans of Amouage Silver Oud (also from Ms Zarokian) may find that Oud Ulya bears resemblance, but takes the complexity, opulence and performance to an even higher level.

For those who covet the heritage line of Amouage attars, this new collection will undoubtedly reaffirm your adoration while reminding us that no one does attars like Amouage. For those new to the medium of fragrant, concentrated oils, this collection will also serve as the perfect starting point to experience the breadth, exclusivity and luxury of an Amouage attar.

  • Each sounds so beautiful, especially the Saffron Hamra, “The ultra-realistic rose, neither soapy nor grandmotherly, provides breath and light in contrast to the earthy saffron”. I would love to win these samples. Cecile Zarokian is my favorite perfumer

  • Michael!! ❤️❤️ Great review! Cécile Zarokian is amazing!!! ❤️ I purchased this Amouage discovery set after reading the wonderful Rachel Watson review of Orris Waken. ❤️ These scents were not at all what I expected for attars, to be honest. They were lighter & prettier than I expected (closer to parfum extraits). I wonder how IFRA regulations are changing the traditional craft of attars? No need to enter me in the draw, I just wanted to say how much I enjoyed the review!

  • The amazing details and interesting information spark my intersst, I live in Poland, EU.

I never tried anything from Amouage yet, but the description is just wonderful. The review takes away to wander around in the warmth of the sands in some faraway country. Also everything made by Cécile Zarokian is just a gift for the senses. I live in Europe, France.

  • kirisekiib says:

I absolutely adore the works of Cecile Zarokian. Her latest fragrances for Amouage are right up my alley, and I think she and Mr. Salmon are a perfect team. I have no doubt Saffron Hamra is amazing too.
I have tried some of the older attars of Amouage but haven’t had the chance to try the new ones. And I am very curious and wish to try them a lot!
    I am from Lithuania, EU.

  • Dubaiscents says:

Lovely review Michael! I completely agree that lovers of Cecile’s Silver Oud will adore Oud Ulya and Saffron Hamra was also one of my favorites from these new releases. Thank you for sharing your thoughts!

  • Super intrigued by both these scents! I love both these notes Oud and saffron in perfumery often in a same scent combo but these can be layered which is a huge plus! Saffron hamra sounds like it’s a darker and earthy saffron scent not just a sweet simplistic one. Even though it has three notes seems to be a much complex creation. Really look forward to trying it. Based in the US

  • roxhas1cat says:

I have never tried an attar. I am curious how much was paid for that 3 ml of pure oud from Borneo if it is the most extravagant. I don’t know much about the price of attar other than it is expensive. I notice this is at OSME in Miami and I am going there tomorrow, I’m super excited to go there and smell these. Saffron Hamra being almost mystical has my attention!! Thanks for the great review. USA

  • Michael,
Your description of the village in Oman at sunset bleeding with saffron and rose scents and cade wood oil raised the memory of my heartbeat, and elegiacally I started to long for tenderness.

    I leave in Lisbon, Portugal

  • Amouage Homage and Tribute attars. Amouage Oud Ulya, perhaps my favorite (among favorites) from the new attar collection, embodies much that I hold dear. Ever-evolving, this oud assam is a perfume unto itself: herbaceous, fruity, honeyed, even a hint of ambergris. Thanks a million from the United Kingdom

Amouage Oud Ulya: (2022) Oud, Vanilla, Birch. A beautiful description by Michael has piqued my interest especially in Ulya an attar that sounds amazing. I have not tried any attars by Amouage maybe I need to put that right. Thanks a lot from the UK

  • A great review that puts the new line of Amouage attars in perspective with their previous issues and in perspective of Cecile Zarokian’s prolific work. Both Saffron Hamra and Oud Ulya sound very compelling.

I am now a little sad that I went to Borneo before discovering how wonderful oud specifically and fragrances in general can be. What a fantastic find for Michael though. I would love to be able to sample these. From US

  • Claumarchini says:

I must confess that I am a huge fan of Cécile Zarokian and a huge fan of Amouage. I love many brands and many noses, but have a soft spot for Ms Zarokian and Amouage. When we are able to travel again without too many restrictions and anxieties, I will immediately travel to Oman to visit the factory and flagship store (during my first visit 10 years ago I wasn’t able to visit Amouage since I had to leave earlier than expected). I am not very familiar with Attars, so I would love to discover these new creations, since they sound absolutely stunning! I am not a vanilla lover, but the way Ms Zarokian uses it captivates also a non-super-lover like me! I am a huge fan of the combination rose-saffron, so would love to be able to sniff them! Greetings from Italy

  • I adore Amouage and the artists selected to reitroduce the attars. Cécile Zarokian is brilliant and probably my favorite perfumer, and her touch is evident in these (and her other work with Amouage). I have tried a couple of the attars (stunning) and look forward to the others! USA

  • As a collector of Amouage, (I am lucky enough to have the original Cristal and many others), I am very interested in this release and these two attars in particular. I have always appreciated the all-out luxury of the house and it’s uncompromising dedication to quality. Thank you for this opportunity! I am in the US.

  • I truly find the concept of attars unique and interesting. I would love to sample these as I have never had an attar and Amouage is such a famous house. In maryland.

  • emorandeira says:

What attracks my attention the most is how everything is described. From the scent to the bottles and passing by textures and perfoemances! Michelyn has made a great job as always! I have not tried these attar yet but Hope be able to do It soon.
I am writing from Tenerife in Spain (EU). Regards to all!

  • I have yet to try anything from Amouage, but attars are what pulled me into fragrance and I would love to try these! Michael’s comment that Oud Ulya reminds him of a vintage Borneo oud piques my interest since Borneo is one of my favorite oud regions. Best wishes from the US.

  • ThunderB75 says:

I’ve only tried the Men’s line. Lyric Man is my absolute favorite. The presentation is different than what I’m used to seeing. Nice. No new attars yet. I’ll look up Borneo later on. I’m curious to see what it’s all about if I can find it. U.S.

  • The amazing details and interesting information spark my interest, I live in Poland, EU.

  • I love oud and Oud based perfumes and also Amouage, and adore Interlude Man. I haven’t had the good fortune of trying their attars, however. Enjoyed Michael’s description of expensive oud perfumes and attars from his collection. Would love to try these attars from Amouage. Thanks for the review and draw. From the USA.

  • Jake Dauod says:

I have not tried any Amouage attars as of yet, but they are definitely on a short list of fragrances that I want to sample. I think I am so drawn to these attars because I know of the quality, I love the notes, and I love the noses behind these creations. I am a big fan of Cecile Zarokian, so I am sure that these attars are masterpieces. I also really like that Michael touched on the few notes listed. I was very hesitant when I first saw only three notes listed, but I am glad that they come off as much more than that. I have never tried any attars before, so I figure these should definitely be the first ones to get my nose on. This was such a great review, and thank you for such a generous giveaway. Kind regards from IN, USA.

  • I know I most often like Cécile Zarokians handwriting, and Oud Ulya sounds just like my kind of Oud. I’d love to win these two samples to Germany, thank you for the draw.

  • Loved the review, Michael! Very detailed, very personal, you can feel the love for these attars just by reading the review! I would love to try out Oud Ulya attar, it seems like my cup of tea – complex, slightly animalic and opulent! I sadly haven’t tried any, but if I have to choose, I’d like to win Oud Ulya! I live in Croatia, EU.

  • What a wonderful, i would like to try these beautiful fragrances, i am always curious to try new emotions with perfumes i don’t know.
    Linda EU

  • I am so intrigued by the attars, but have not tried one yet. I’ve been dying to try some. I love that Michael compares Amouage Oud Ulya to the crown jewel oud from Borneo in his collection. It sounds to die for. I am in the US.

  • Southirina says:

Pure luxury and sophisticated scents. It was a pleasure reading this review.

  • wandering_nose says:

I love that Amouage have undertaken a project which is all about going back to the roots of Middle Eastern perfumery by creating attars to tell stories of historical and cultural heritage. The choice of perfumers is nothing short of genius here. The adjectives Michael has used to describe Oud Ulya and Saffron Hamra make the compositions sound utterly appealing. Powerful, enveloping, comforting, magnificent… I would love to try them both as I haven’t had the chance to test the new Amouage series yet. Thank you from Dublin, Ireland, EU

  • Michael Prince says:

I loved Michael’s review of Amouage Saffron Hamra and Amouage Oud Ulya attars. I love how Cécile Zarokian along with two other master perfumers, Dominique Ropion, and Julien Rasquinet worked together to create these beautiful Attars that highlight and showcase the Omani landscape. I would love an opportunity to try these. I am from the USA.

  • I am very interested in Attars and also a big fan of Cécile Zarikian’s work (from Ami to Material). I live in Luxembourg EU.

  • I would be interested to try attars- especially from this house and this perfumer! They do indeed sound like the perfect starting point to discover attars. Thank you for the review- writing from the EU.

  • I only smelled the scents of this GORGEOUS brand.
AMOUAGE ATTAR is a unique experience for those who love perfumes.
    Matt (EU)

  • I enjoy the Amouage fragrances I’ve tried so far, and I hope to add more of their releases to my collection. For me, this part of Michael’s review was helpful: “For those who covet the heritage line of Amouage attars, this new collection will undoubtedly reaffirm your adoration while reminding us that no one does attars like Amouage. For those new to the medium of fragrant, concentrated oils, this collection will also serve as the perfect starting point to experience the breadth, exclusivity and luxury of an Amouage attar.” I certainly want to try Amouage’s attars. I live in the U.S.A. Thanks for the generosity.

  • wallygator88 says:

Thanks for the great review Michael.

Making an attar is an entirely different ballgame (both in terms of materials and perfumery) and I love seeing perfumers like Cecile venture into this territory, taking the country as inspiration.

THis review brings back Oman to my minds eye and both Saffron Hamra and Oud Ulya are wonderful interpretations of the location they represent. I’m especially intrigued to see the use of Cade in Saffron Hamra.

    Would love to win either.

    Cheers from WI, USA

  • Amouage to me is synonymous with luxury and opulence and these attars sound like that. The sound complex with powerful and evolving characteristics. Would love to try these attars from Amouage,
    Maryland, US.

  • sephrenia300 says:

Fascinating review Michael! What sparks my interest about Michael’s review is the imagery of sunset at the village of Al Hamra in Oman with its contrasting light and dark and how that’s reflected in the bright saffron, rich rose and dark bold cade leather oil notes of the attar. It sounds like the perfect fragrance complex and powerful and I am absolutely captivated!

I live in the US. I have not tried the new attars yet but I would absolutely love to!
