All along the Silk Road, caravanserai traipsed for approximately 1,400 years – through desert terrain and the vast Eurasian steppe. Intrepid adventurers and merchants risked life and limb to purchase, barter and deliver precious goods for European consumption and edification. The most well-known among these might be Marco Polo, who commenced his journey to China in 1271 A.D. and continued to travel these roads for 24 years. Silks, gems, spices; noodles (soon to be known as pasta) and the concept of paper cur Amouage Epic rency were among the discoveries he brought back with him over the decades. Amouage Epic Woman (the new extrait, Amouage Epic 56 Woman (solely created by Cecile Zarokian in 2021) is beautifully described by Senior Contributor Rachel Watson) is a brilliant olfactive illustration of the precious cargo for which we continue to be grateful: it is laden with spice, exquisite roses, tea, musk, frankincense, sandalwood and oud from the East. In fact, Amouage Epic Woman was the first Arabian perfume I ever purchased (soon to be followed by Jubilation 25 Epic Woman epitomized the creation of haute parfumerie which would satisfy exotic cravings all around the globe.

In 2009 our youngest was in high school; I recall his passing by me as I tap-tapped, writing late into the night – and burying his inquisitive nose in my hair. “That is simply marvelous”, he astutely remarked – and of course, the fragrance in which I was enveloped was Epic Woman (this particular son has since developed a similarly good sense of smell and now is a fine cook). Its Silk Road rose from Damascus was embedded in rare woods and frankincense, and since everyone in my household appreciated cumin, there wasn’t a single complaint to be voiced. Thirteen years later and nothing has changed.

It is said that fortune favors the bold – and Amouage Epic Woman is nothing if not bold. It is, in my opinion, one of those fragrances which benefits from decanting into a small glass vial or flacon for dabbing – not spraying. Unless one lives within a culture which is not disturbed by very potent aromas, anything approaching liberal lashings of Epic Woman may be considered antisocial: it is pervasive, tenacious and imperious, taking no prisoners. Above all things, Epic is overwhelmingly beautiful, intoxicating as the first flush of passion. Regal is an accurate descriptor, I think.

Rose is the diva here, further fleshed out by the rosy/minty/herbalcy of geranium. Jasmine takes a back stage role, as does orris; considering the prominence of cumin and cinnamon and the heft of tea, amber, frankincense and woody components, this is not surprising. Both vanilla and oud are judiciously dosed, which is fortuitous – as this prevents Epic Woman from becoming overbearing to many Western noses. Why the delineation between East and West? I firmly believe that at the time this perfume was composed there existed a desire to bridge cultural differences – to maintain the beauty of an established Middle Eastern ethic in such a way that those of us living elsewhere would be seduced and curious to experience more. I perceive Amouage Epic Woman as a means of establishing a form of aromatic communication which speaks to a larger audience and engenders understanding and appreciation. Increasing familiarity with a particular palette might indeed provoke a desire to explore cuisine/custom/culture through which common ground is found. This can only bring us all closer, in my view. Heaven knows, I try to achieve this with food; why not perfume?

Notes: Cumin, Pink Bay (schinus molle), Cinnamon, Damask Rose, Geranium, Jasmine, Tea, Amber, Musk, Oud Frankincense, Guaiac Wood, Orris, Sandalwood, Patchouli, Vanilla.

  • Thank you, Ida. I am so enjoying the recent series of Amouage reviews and was thrilled to see this one, as Epic has a place in my heart (and nose). It is a huge fragrance in the best way possible, as you note. I also like that it is Zarokian’s first. I’ve finally accepted my favorite Amouage depends on what I’m enjoying on any given day, but Epic is certainly in the top few and I’d love to own a bottle. I’m in USA, thanks!

  • Thank you Ida for such a wonderful review. Epic Woman sounds like a Fragrance I would love to own. USA

  • I love Ida’s personal touch and experiences (when she talks about her son) related to Epic Woman. We all have those interesting moments in life that connect memories to fragrances. That is what makes fragrances so powerfull. Cécile Zarokian is an amazing artist, and I really love her work. I was lucky to sample all of the new Amouage extraits and Epic was my absolute favorite (I unfortunately did not try the original Epic Woman yet). Spicy notes are perfectly combined (I adore cinnamon) with florals and woods. Incense are also big part of this fragrance in my opinion (luckily since I love them). I agree with Ida, Epic woman is a bridge between east and west and this should be a good reason for everyone to try this fragrance. I did not sample to many Amouage fragrances but my favorite for now if the amazing regal Jubilation 25. I’m from Illinois, US.

I have heard so much about Cècile Zarokian and epic woman that I was glad ida gave it her very personal point of view. It sounds great and I like how it’s really a spicy rose too

  • I absolutely love cumin in perfume and Epic woman has been in my shortlist of Amouages I’m interested in trying, Fate being another. Great review as usual.
    In US.

  • Amouage Epic Woman is a bold composition and Ida thinks it may be better as a dab application. Interesting to hear it even impressed Ida’s son when he was in high school. I have Epic Man and I love it and imagine Epic Woman is equally impressive. My fav. Amouage is Gold Woman. I am in US.

  • whimsical diva says:

The only Amouage I’ve tried is Lyric but the general line is very much up my alley. I love bold, spicy fragrances and this review has sold me that I just need to test out the rest. I’d love to be entered for the draw. I live in California.

  • Ida!!! ❤️❤️❤️ What a Gorgeous and Heartwarming review! I love that your youngest son has inherited your olfactory gifts. ❤️ Your description of Epic Woman as “imperious” and “tenacious” are so apt in describing its head-turning power. I love the idea of this scent as a cultural bridge and connection. I am currently getting to know the house of Amouage (so so many brilliant scents) and I’m not sure I can pick a favorite, yet. My first full bottle was Honour Woman 43 extrait. I would LOVE to win a full bottle of Epic Woman! What an amazing draw! Thank you Europerfumes! Good luck to everyone! USA ❤️

  • What strikes me about Amouage Epic Woman based on this review is its ability to be perceived as one to bridge cultures. By now we are lucky to have experienced many of the notes around the world, and yet the perfume as a whole can still have this effect. I haven’t smelled many Amouage fragrances but of the ones I have smelled, Epic 56 Woman is my favorite, which is also why I am interested in the original Epic Woman. Best wishes from MA, USA

  • Another beautiful review by Ida !!!
Love Epic Woman very much – very impressive beautiful full of beauty and power.
I love Cecile Zarokyan creation. This one is real masterpiece.

  • Epic Woman is really fantastic, really masterpiece!
It is full of fire, power and charisma!
Love woody, spice and incense nuances of this perfume.

  • Epic Woman I’ve smelled just last week. I have to say I agree with Ida Meister about the sweetness in it.
The way Epic Woman smells, it reminds me of my teacher, and mentor Pierre Hermé .
In his shops, he has one original recipe, his take on the French cookies known as sablés . It’s actually a tart , and it features peach halves (dried apricots can also be used ) set on rose-almond cream, all sprinkled with cumin-caramelized sugar.
He infuses the cream with both dehydrated rosebuds first , and some rose water later on.
I don’t know about the East and West, and the Silk Road, Epic Woman is not a gourmand in the traditional way , but to me smells very similar to Pierre Hermè tarts I just described.
Jubilation XXV is a staple in my collection . Smells a bit like a mix between BlackBerry crumble traybake and BlackBerry Swirl Muffins with honey butter both with cinnamon. Can’t help it- Pastry Chef in me goes forward ‍each and every time. My favorite Amouage
Appreciate Ida Meister review, and the giveaway campaign

  • Epic Woman sounds perfectly unisexy. I’m drawn to the spices, frankincense and oud. I enjoy Amouage’s Library Collection, especially Opus VII. Thanks for another awesome article and draw. Mich USA

  • Ida’s story of wearing Epic in ’09 takes me right back to my first wearing when it was released. It was instant love and those around me swooned over it. To this day, I can’t choose a favorite. It’s either Epic or Jubilation 25, with Gold Woman a close contender. I was just thinking that it’s time to get another bottle of it. I’m in the US.

  • I always enjoy Ida’s depth of knowledge in her writings. Its always a joy to read and food for the soul. Wonderful review.

  • Ida sharing the experience of her son savoring the fragrance as he passed her by brought a personal touch to the magic of this perfume. I own several in the men’s line and it’s very difficult to pick only one as a favorite. I look forward to the winter months here in the Deep South of the USA to enjoy the Amouage brand.

  • Amouage is one of my favorite houses and Epic Woman is one of my top five favorites from the house. It is an amazing spicy rose that evokes the Silk Road and is quite bold, as pointed out by Ida. “Regal” is truly the best adjective for Epic; it is exquisite and one-of-a-kind. It’s so hard to choose my favorite Amouage fragrance, but Lilac Love has been my signature since it was released. I also love Fate, Sunshine, Lyric, Myths, and Blossom Love (among others). Thank you, Ida, for the excellent review, and thanks to Europerfumes for the giveaway. I am located in the USA.

  • I like Ida’s review of amouage epic woman. I can feel her emotional and genuine connection and love for epic woman. The bold expression of this fragrance is evident in her description of the fragrance. I am just beginning to appreciate the uniqueness of what Amouage offers. I have only tried Amouage Black Iris but looking forward to trying more Amouage fragrances because of how unique and beautiful they smell.
    Greetings from Maryland, US.

  • I have heard so much about Amouage fragrances, but never tried one. Ida’s review has me very much wanting Epic Woman. The way she describes it, it sounds marvelous.

  • Ida’s description of Epic Woman makes me think of a beautiful journey of exploration. I would love to take that journey. My favorite Amouage fragrance Honour Woman.

  • I was surprised by the intro with Khayyam’s infinite wisdom. I did not expect that. Thanks for the simple and accurate review.
I became a fan of Cecile`s creations recently like Ani, Tango, and Material. I could say Material is one of my favorites from Amouage.
I never tried Epic Woman though.
Thank you for the draw and I am in the USA.

  • Oh, my! I’ve not tried any Amouage scents yet, but this sounds delightful! I’m a sucker for spices, rose and sandalwood. Thank you, Ida, for that lovely description. I live in the US.

  • IvanVelikov says:

There’s a story behind every Amouage fragrance, and i think the brand us loved by most Cafleurebon contributors. I think it’s quite obvious Amouage Epic Woman means a lot to Ida Meister.
Guaiac wood, frankincense and patchouli , and some vanilla , Epic Woman is upscale nighttime fragrance , with Middle Eastern flavor.
Every time I’m thinking about Amouage, I’m thinking about Interlude Man . Stunning fragrance.Happy to own it , one of the best , if not the best ever created in the incense category . Finished 3 bottles during the years , and I’m on my 4th , and already made a big dent on it .
Thank you Ida , and Europerfumes

  • I enjoyed Ida’s description of the Silk Road journeys taken by intrepid travelers and traders bridging the East and the West. The notes in Amouage Epic Woman are lovely and serve as an aromatic communication between the East and the West now. Unfortunately I haven’t tried anything by. Amouage, yet, but have tried Midnight Oud by Ard Al Zaafaran which is supposed to be similar to Amouage Interlude Man, though much more reasonably priced than the latter. And judging by how much I like Midnight Oud, I bet Amouage Interlude Man is lovely. Would love to win this draw to check out my first Amouage perfume. Thanks for a lovely review and a generous draw. From USA.

  • Ida’s superlative reviews are always sooo evocative, and I’m intrigued that in this one, she advises we dab Woman, rather than spray. I’ve found that I often prefer to dab, rather than spray, many of my fragrances.
I love cumin in perfumes, which is amusing to me, because I detest it in food! It adds so much warmth to fragrances, whereas in food it overwhelms everything else for me.
Jubilation 25 is the closest thing I have to a signature scent, but all the earlier Amouage releases were stunning, very rich and opulent, and quite different to other offerings of the time.

  • redwheelbarrow says:

I love the idea of a perfume bridging cultural distances! I have not gotten to smell this one yet but it sounds stunningly beautiful! All of those spices with the rose are such a wonderful combination. I cannot imagine the lengths one had to go to for new and exciting spices. It’s such a wild concept. Thank you for the draw. From the US.

  • It appears the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree. Ida, you with a great nose, and your son with a great nose and palate.
My biggest takeaway from your article was the bridging of fragrance/perfume cultures.
My wife and I own several Amouage fragrances and have experienced the quality of this fragrance house. We are also Cecile Zarokian fans. What an amazing fragrance this must be. I am in the USA. Thank you for the opportunity 🙂

  • I love these little looks into your life that you give with your stories, Ida. This sounds like a gorgeous rose and I bet you wear it well! I like the sound of a “pervasive, tenacious and imperious” rose fills me with longing for such a rose! Thanks for the review and the draw. I am in the USA.

  • I love Amouage Epic Woman. I have a small decant which I save for special occasions. I always gets compliments, along the lines of “what is that divine scent!” It is an attention getter which is decidedly feminine. It’s my favorite Amouage and I would love a full bottle so I can wear it more often. I’m in MD, USA.

  • sephrenia300 says:

Fantastic review Ida! What strikes me about Amouage Epic Woman based on Ida’s review is how she described it as a bridge between east and west, a product of a time where there existed a strong desire to find common ground between cultural differences. I love how she sees Epic woman as a means of “aromatic communication” to increase understanding and familiarity, to bring people closer together. I absolutely love that idea, and a fragrance that embodies that is certainly something I would love.

My favorite Amouage fragrance has to be Gold Woman – just the perfect decadent, luxurious, and mysterious fragrance, full of heady jasmine, precious frankincense, intoxicating cistus and just the right amount of civety funk. A powerful fragrance for powerful women only! I live in the US.

  • Danu Seith-Fyr says:

Bonjour Dearest Ida, How marvellous to take this voyage with you in the company of one of my first explorations into this new world of perfumery. Epic struck me from the very first inhalation so I dove head first into your words and found myself once again reveling in this beauty. Thank you, not eligible for the draw but just wanting to show my appreciation for the finer things in life, Ida and Epic…

  • Thanks for a great review, Ida! I’m a huge fan of rose and your description of Amouage Epic as a fragrance with the rose is a diva is very intriguing! I hope to win! Thanks for the draw. – CA, USA

  • What a beautiful composition of notes. And I agree wholeheartedly about exploring cultures through food and think perfumes lend itself to do the same thing. I have never owned any Amouage fragrances. Most reviewers I follow have only reviewed the male fragrances so I have little experience knowing about the female scents. Epic Woman sounds so complex and beautiful.
    I live in the USA.

  • Amouage fragrances are prime examples why you should never judge the book by its cover. I’m surprised Ida do not perceive the leather, but I do. That’s why I always sample first.
Epic Woman i think is plethora of spices and woods, with rose , and leathery vanilla to smoothen the blend.
Journey Man and Interlude Black Iris i own. Both are equally as good
    Exiting giveaway , USA
    Regards

  • Amouage fragrances are just different. Even if you like all the notes , In my opinion you should never blind buy , without trying the fragrance you’re interested on skin. Some do smell very different on different people, when sprayed on skin
For example me , and hubby , we both live Sunshine Man , the fragrance is gourmand on me , but on him is less sweet, herbal and sour. You can never tell we’re wearing the same fragrance ! Similar expectations I have for Epic Woman. Its silky well mixed roses , leather ,vanilla , incense and tea , i all find attractive
My favorite Amouage is Sunshine Man
    Thanks for the draw

What interests me about Amouage Epic Woman based on Ida’s review is how she describes this as being the perfect and smooth transition between East and West with a beautiful Rose/Oud combo, spices, florals, resinous touches, and incense. Cecile Zarokian is brilliant and one of my favorite perfumers and I love the styling of Amouage fragrances. My favorite Amouage fragrance is Amouage Epic Man. I am from Ohio, USA.

  • Love this perfume very much among with man version. Epic Woman more dance and complex than man version.
There are some energy and hot in this perfume- that is why I would prefer this perfume bottle would be red color.
Love incense with woods and spices combination in epic Woman.

  • Thank you Ida for this fantastic review. Epic Man is one of my favorite fragrances from Amouage and this one really looks amazing. The part I loved the most about the description is this: “verwhelmingly beautiful, intoxicating as the first flush of passion”. Would love to smell this potent, vigorous rose based fragrance.
My favorite fragrance from Amouage is Interlude Black Iris.
    I live in the U.S.

Thanks for the beautiful review, Ida.

Any Amouage fragrance is always worthy of a read because of my connection to Oman, a place both Amouage and I call home. It’s not hard to understand the influences behind these fragrances. The Dhofar region is famous for it’s frankinscense and the peoeple love rose, spices, oud and bakhour.

This scent reminds me of all of that.

My current favourite Amouage is Meander. It absolutely brings back memeories of Salalah.

    Cheers from WI, USA

  • “Thirteen years later and nothing has changed.”

Amouage presentations went through a couple of changes during the years, especially compared to the old days. I do admit I discovered Epic Woman ~2013 , and I don’t know if the fragrance had the original presentation . In the beginning men’s versions were in the shape of a dagger, and women’s were more cubical with caps in the shape of a temple. Fragrance geek , what can I say …
I’m on the same page with Ida about Epic Woman, with one small exception :

“Jasmine takes a back stage role, as does orris”

Interesting , to me the iris is quite noticeable in Epic Woman.
I can even compare the fragrance with Epic 56, the opening of which was so pungent, it took me by surprise. Other than the thickness, the amped up incense, and the addition of sweetness in Epic 56 , there and not a lot of differences between the two. For most people owning Epic Woman would be enough . That’s what I think of course.
At the moment i do own Jubilation XXV for men – the best Amouage overall , regular Intelude Man AKA “The Blue Beast” , Lilac Love , Blossom Love , and very first, original Reflection Man presentation. Sapphire glass, kanja dagger kind of cap , almost impossible to find, true relic from the past . One of a kind gem i wear once or twice per year at very best.
    All profiles I already follow
    Thanks a lot

  • My favorite Amouage fragrance is “Jubilation XXV Man” (which I own), and I also own and enjoy “Interlude Man” and “Epic Man”. I found Ida’s review to be insightful concerning the ideas which were used to make “Epic Woman” (and most likely “Epic Man” too). I would like to try “Epic Woman” for multiple reasons, and I’ve heard that it’s unisex. I live in the U.S.A. Thanks for the giveaway opportunity.

  • Thank you Ida for another detailed review. Cecile Zarokian must have a remarkable nose to be named on such an iconic fragrance. I’m also in love with one of her other creations for Nishane – Ani and would be stoked to try Epic Woman. My favorite from Amouage actually happens to be Epic Man 🙂 I’m in USA

  • It’s been a long-long time, since I started wearing Amouage perfumes , usually I prefer male versions , despite being a woman. Epic Man i knew, but Epic Woman i tried after reading about the Extrait late last year, here on Cafleurebon.
I see the Middle Eastern market connection Ida made, and everything else except the vanilla , I don’t smell the vanilla . In my opinion Epic Woman is like spice market in Morocco, spicy, woody and so dry .
Jubilation XXV , Journey Woman , and Lilac Love are in my possession
    Thank you for the opportunity
