For the Extrait, Aurelien increased the perfume concentration of Vanilla Absolue and added tonka bean absolue, as the guest ingredient.

In his own words: “The tonka bean is first ground to powder, before being transformed into an absolute. I use it as a natural powder ingredient. It brings a voluptuous facet to Vanilla Powder and intensifies its character. The locally extracted absolute is obtained from carefully selected beans, grown and dried for nearly 18 months between the jungle and the ocean, on Fair for Life –certified land in northeast Madagascar. It offers the olfactive balance I was looking for. My goal was to create a vanilla like no other. I imagined a dark vanilla bean painted white. In my formula, I have contrasted this rich vanilla absolute with an overdose of modern white powders looking for: a dark, supple vanilla character, not overly sweet, with a salty facet” –Aurélien Guichard, Founder & Creative Perfumer

    Reading over Aurelien Guichard interview it brought back memories when I was gifted Unforgivable by Sean John when i was younger. I’ve always wanted to try Matière Premiere’s fragrances but I never knew where to begin. I loove looove coconut fragrances since my journey begin so long ago when i discovered creed’s virgin island water. Steven mentioned coconut powder and immediately my ears and eyes perked up lol. I’m always searching for the next best coconut vanilla scent. This sounds sophisticated and smooth. I recently blond bought the bew Initio lift me up and i get loads of vanilla and powdery elements to that so i wonder how this smells compared to the initio. Something that I don’t see other people saying about that initio lift me up is how close ot smells like xerjoff white on white (more coconut and fig in that one but same milky vibe) I wanted to try Matière Premiere for a while. I wish there was a raffle to go to Steven’s place just to smell a small fraction of things that He suggests based on what’s in my collection. Fingers crossed! Thank you!

    Steven is one of my favorite reviewers. I like how he describes fragrances and what kind of vibe it gives. I didn’t know that fig wasn’t a real accord. Always learn something. Love this brand also

    Steve says this upgrade version of Matiere Premiere Vanilla Powder is unique from most vanilla fragrances with the inclusion of the coconut powder giving the scent a “fantasy note” element that gives it an essence of fig for him as well as Helvetolide which gives it a warm, musky depth. Overall, he sees it as a well-crafted, beautiful and creamy vanilla coconut that is great for all occasions with increased longevity with the extrait version.

    I love Steven’s reviews as he is very descriptive and knowledgeable about fragrances. You almost feel as if you’re right there smelling it with him.
    Aurelien Guichard Description on how he wanted this fragrance to smell gives you an insight into his genius mind about fragrances. I would love to have this as the original one is my favorite.

    This had all my favorites! Vanilla, coconut, powder, musk. Interested in the sandalwood comment from Redolessence too where he mentions in his review, “And as this dries down you almost get a creamy sandalwood ingredient.”

    Guichard’s quote “Not everyone can relate to a fragrance” should be my mantra because I’m often finding my favorite fragerances are not often appreciated by those around me some days of the week. Speaking of which, I often will layer his Falcon Leather with my decanter of his Falcon Leather Extrait Matière released last year which brings the birch tar further out is silage. I also have a decanter of his Vanilla Powder that’s been sitting around for more than a year. I would love to sample the extrait version.

    I just finished Burr’s book, The Perfect Scent, and I can see the parallel journeys between Guichard and Jean Claude Ellena growing up in Grasse from that prior interview – two men from two very different generations.

    I found it interesting how Aurelien explained the process of making the tonka absolute. Steven’s review was authentic. I love listening to his reviews, because he always lists his likes and dislikes. He mentioned that this fragrance seemed linear. That is definitely ok with me, because I live these notes.

    The original version of this scent was already a viral sensation and I can only imagine what this new extrait will do. Vanilla happens to be my favorite note in perfumery so I do own lots of it and have experienced different facets of vanillas. I recently learned that the extraits each have a guest note compared to the original ones on top of a higher concentration of oils. Aurélien Guichard was always destined to be an artist and I’m glad he picked perfumery because he’s very good at it. Growing up in Grasse (where fragrances are credited being born) it only made sense for him to be an artists of sorts especially when the parents are always surrounded by other artists wanting to create unique ways of artistic expression (taken from the article). I must experience this one myself because Steven it’s getting a sort of fig scent which is a very interesting take on it. Also reading that the extraction process of this specific vanilla bean took 18 months only adds to the intricacy and uniqueness of how Aurelien approaches his creations.     It was interesting to read when Aurelien said he imagined a dark vanilla bean painted white. The video said this fragrance can last ten hours. I recall in an interview Aurelien said he was “raised between the fields of jasmine and roses that belonged to my grandparents in Grasse”. US

    I can’t wait to try Vanilla powder extrait. I love Steven’s description of all the notes.I like how he explained that there are different type of vanilla scents and how the vanilla in this fragrance almost comes across as a fig vanilla.     I like the fact that both the article and the Redolessence review highlighted the fact that there is a difference between the two fragrances due to the change in a few of the notes as well as amping up some of the original notes. Although I did appreciate the og fragrance it was too coconut forward for my taste. I had to let it go to a home where it would be appreciated for it’s beauty and presence.

    I recently discovered Matiere Premiere fragrances and fell in love with the original vanilla powder. At the time I didn’t see an extract available so it’s great to see that one has been made around the time I first put my nose on it. I don’t own any from the brand yet, but vanilla powder extract is one that I have my eyes on!

    I always enjoy Steven’s reviews. He dissects the fragrance in terms of composition, performance, and sometimes history, which together give an accurate context to the perfume. What got me thinking though, after listening to his review is the concept of extraits, and whether that means the perfume is not finished after all. Why not make the perfume extrait in the first place? I’m sure there is a logical explanation to this…

    As for Aurelien’s introduction, what caught my attention was the great deal of care put into growing, harvesting, extracting, etc. that goes into Matiére Premiere materials. Combined with Airelien’s skills and experience, the house produces strong offerings.

    Quote from the interview – “When I do not work, I love wearing perfumes made by other perfumers, because I do not know the formula behind… it is such a pleasure when the creation is beautiful!”
    Sometimes, it’s better to just enjoy it without overthinking how a perfume is made.

    I haven’t had the privilege of owning anything from Matiere Premiere yet. I’ve been eyeing Parisian Musc and Vanilla Powder and love both scent profiles. I’m a sucker for extrait, and Steven mentioned that in his opinion, it’s a signature scent type fragrance. He’s pretty on point, plus you can’t go wrong with a vanilla scent. I hope to have a lot of Matiere Premiere fragrances on my shelf soon.

    I enjoyed reading the introduction especially about the Tonka bean, how its used and sourced. From Steven’s video I enjoyed how he mentioned its a powdery vanilla and he experiences fig as well which is fascinating.     I enjoyed learning of a new fragrance with notes I’m keen on that I likely would not have if Steven didn’t cover it on his YouTube.

    Aureliens passion for perfumery is what I enjoyed learning the most from his interview. The quote “Opened my own organic farm and became the only perfumer to grow his own raw materials.” showed me how deep his passion is.

    I am very interested in trying both Vanilla Powders! I love a unique take on vanilla and it seems based on Steven’s YouTube video and Aurelien Guichard’s introduction Vanilla Powder Extrait provides just that. Both Steven and Aurelien placed emphasis on the use of coconut to enhance the vanilla in Vanilla Powder Extrait. Michelyn’s interview with Aurelien Guichard notes his rich history of perfumers he was born into. Guichard quotes, “I was lucky to grow up with them not only because they were successful and talented artists, but because they were open-minded and humble people, believing in diversity of talents and of visions of life.” I definitely thought about how fortunate Aurelien is to have grown up around such rich history and culture. He couldn’t help but to be a creative person himself!

    Greetings! The write up on this fragrance is spot on. I had the opportunity to smell Vanilla Powder Extrait in Neiman Marcus last week. My store does not carry it but my sales associate had a sample and sprayed it on me. I absolutely fell in love on first sniff. I would be oh so happy to have this fragrance.     I would love to win a bottle of this perfume!! I enjoyed Steven’s review of Vanilla Powder because he did a great job comparing the original to the extrait. I also appreciated how Aurelien explained in depth how different and more prominent the vanilla is in the extrait. The original was definitely more coconut heavy so I look forward to trying the extrait since it has more of a deeper and darker vanilla!!!

    I love how both Guichard and Steven get indepth with their parts, Steven explaining the art and Guichard creating it. The quote that stuck out to me most was “I have always been attracted to nature.” It is fascinating how naturally centered Guichard is, even given his use of raw and natural materials in his fragrances.

    I absolutely adore Steven’s review!! I always learn a ton! Especially that the coconut accords can create a wonderful fantasy scent profile alongside the musk! the fact that the creator himself affirmed the 18-month process for grinding and that its entirety fair trade just makes it even more sublime of an experience. i typically love hefty dark fragrances, so i definitely need to get some hands-on experience with this masterpiece of artistry!

    From the interview “ To me, it is a return to the essentials of fragrance creation. I have always been attracted to nature.”. I love the way this guy creates fragrances. It’s very modern and stripped down. Focusing on key notes and elements.

In addition I want to express my favorite quote from Aurelein Guichard “Raw materials are for me, as a perfumer, the colors that I use to create emotions.” This speaks to me very profoundly because it lets you imagine exactly what his thought process is when it comes to designing perfumes.     How amazing it is to learn from Aurélien Guichard that the vanilla is dried for nearly 18 months. Makes you respect perfumology. A quote that especially resonated with me from Aurélien’s interview was: ‘We decided our goal would be to turn a raw material into a perfume, with a unique construction: use a very high dosage of one central, extremely qualitative and natural ingredient, then use only a few more, equally qualitative ingredients to facet the main one.’

    As for Stevens’ review this is confident, elegant, fun and outgoing without being serious. Also the performance is mentioned to be better, i want to try this for sure.

    I often blind buy solely from the detailed descriptions of fragrances that Steven talks about in his videos. He has yet to steer me wrong and I’ve yet to be disappointed by a purchase. Vanilla Powder has been on my list for a while now, but it just hasn’t been in the budget.
    The quote that resonated with me from the extra article was “ They were talented artists talking about their passion, exchanging and confronting ideas and experiences.” Seems like the perfect way to inspire a perfumer or any artist for that matter. Fragrance journeys are different for everyone and notes start to become visual pictures in your head from an individual’s past, like dancing biographical stories in your brain. An addictive experience in itself.

    I was just talking today about how the business people are zooming in on the profitable business of large scale perfume making and the bottom line trumps putting $ into the ingredients and artists/perfumers. And it shows. Lots of promo but no great juice.
    So this quote from the interview resonates with me “I am from a family of perfumers, and during my childhood, creating perfumes, growing flowers or perfume production appeared to me as part of our way of life, more than strictly a profession.”. Because this is his passion, culture, way of life. It’s not a new investment opportunity.
