Perfumer Camille Leguay composed a stunning perfume in BDK Parfum Wood Jasmin, one that has that vintage retro feel, a nod to the past brought into the contemporary. It’s almost like the love child of Shalimar and L’Heure Bleu drunk on a fruit liquor or possibly a long-lost Jean Patou with its opulent full feel. Wood Jasmin’s name might lead you to believe it’s a simple blend of jasmine and woods, but it’s actually much more intricate. The perfume boasts a luxurious, fruity balsamic heart that gradually transforms into a smoky aroma full of mystery. Jasmine is presented in a unique manner, showcasing its diverse characteristics. Interestingly, I recently bought some Guatemalan coffee that instantly brought Wood Jasmin to mind. Names and preconceived ideas can fool us, if you were to taste it without knowing, you wouldn’t guess it was coffee; instead, you’d experience a delightful mix of boozy balsamic red wine notes, ripe tropical fruits, and cherry – reminiscent of how BDK Parfums Wood Jasmin unfolds on my skin.

Fruity, rich, boozy florals blossom, giving Wood Jasmin an opulent feel as it opens. Rose petals textured with soft pear flesh, feel sensual and rich as more herbal aromas draw the darkness around them. Elegant plummy aromas give Wood Jasmin a delicious deep feel, as if the fruits are going ripe making them boozy with a balsamic intensity. Egyptian Jasmine with its danker herbaceous side adds to the abstract floral haze that’s slowly blooming around the dark plumy fruit aromas.

Pear seems to feel more powdery as the soft leather rich florals jasmine sambac bloom, making BDK Parfums Wood Jasmin feel softly suede like. A shift occurs as the fruits grow richer and more abstract, shifting more into a dark cherry, almond, stone-fruit feel. Lush aromatics from davana give more herbal boozy facets to Wood Jasmin, while pulling out more sweetness from the florals and fruits making the darker elements shine with a soft haze of jasmine as it haunts the edges. Everything slowly grows deeper revealing a soft rich glow in the heart. Sensual dark vanilla hides here, giving this opulent feel, one that’s not at all very obvious at first, as the boozy davana fruits and florals draw your attention, enriching people closer before the balsamic richness envelopes them. Turkish rose also envelops the vanilla as it reveals itself with its soft green spices giving a silky texture to the rich aromas that have been in the spotlight. It’s hard to call this is a jasmine forward perfume as the delicious liqueur fruits and later the smoky balsamic resinous woods that feel the most forward, yet the jasmine lingers at the edges in air around you. New woody aromas arrive, with pear again giving a soft powdery feel to them, as its texture and scent continue to play hide and seek throughout the wear. Everything merges under the influence of these florals with davana’s complex liquor feel giving a delicious sensation, as woody raisin like tobacco facets add a new element to Wood Jasmin.

Soft woody smoky aromas wrap around this boozy floral fruitiness with a balsamic richness that seems to expand the davana’s liquor facets as the plumy pear from earlier gives a more cherry almond feel like on my skin, leaving the pluminess behind. The Indonesian patchouli gives a deep dark richness to the liqueur, thickening it with earthy undertones creating a sense of depth without its more dirty facets showing, whispers of its wet earthiness ground the balsamic rich smokiness that encases the fruity florals. A lot of the woodiness in BDK Parfums Wood Jasmin seems to be coming from Madagascan vanilla, the sweetness of the vanilla is there quietly adding to rich feel but it’s that powdery woody side that giving a thickness to the ambery incense notes that’s are giving rich muskiness and air of mystery, as cypriol makes the rich fruity florals smoulder with a darker warmth. Frankincense, while adding to the smoky feel also lightens the heavier musky haze with a gentle woody freshness. Wood Jasmin’s deep dry down sits on my skin like a dark cherry wrapped in a soft floral haze of powdery woods and a balsamic incense smoke. Rich, dark and delicious, on colder days, perfect for winter, but a few light sprays gives you a smoky mysterious balsamic floral feel on warmer days.
