WE LOVE THIS STORE: Aedes Perfumery + Temple of Beauty on 16A Orchard Street Draw

Karl Bradl and Robert Gerstner Owners of Aedes Perfumery on Orchard Street

Karl Bradl and Robert Gerstner Owners of Aedes Perfumery and  Creative Directors of Aedes de Venustas Perfumes

On a crisp Spring afternoon in mid-April, I visited Aedes Perfumeryand sat outdoors with co-owners Karl Bradl and Robert Gerstner to discuss the current state of fragrance, mutual fragrant friends, and the history and future of the bijoux boutique in New York City.  During the two-hour-plus conversation, I observed a number of customers, some new and some regulars stopping in to shop. I asked them how is the state of their business. Smiling, they exclaimed “excellent.” Has the Spring weather and more access to Covid vaccinations made a difference in foot traffic? “Most certainly!” Last year Aedes Perfumery celebrated its 25th anniversary. That’s a quarter of a century. Congratulations on year 26! (I admit I was late to  Aedes Perfumery. My first visit to the West Village boutique was on a Sunday afternoon at the close of Sniffapalooza’s 2010 Fall Ball).

Aedes Perfumery is located on 16A Orchard Street

In July of 2018, Karl and Robert packed up their prior location and left the West Village, and headed to Chinatown. The timing could not have been better. The new location has that kind of intimate vibe as the first two stores. The boutique’s decor like the previous three has a similar visual appeal best described as a Victorian-style jewel box.

The new location was a needed relief from the prior location (more on that later). Customers must ring a bell to enter. It’s counter service, direct conversation with customers, and very focused. This is where a conversation takes place with a customer and selected fragrances are brought out based on that conversation.” Robert said. How do you approach someone not sure what they are looking for? “As a starting point, we usually will bring one scent in each family to gauge their style and personality a work from there.” Pandemic precautions are strictly enforced. Only two customers permitted at any given time with masks up of course as of this writing.

The majority of their customer base are very loyal and continue to shop at their new location. Prior to the move, they were carrying about 80-90 brands. The move to the new location gave them a chance to clean house with a number of brands that were no longer serving them. Many of those being overexposed. Now the number is closer to 30-40 brands. And, everything on the website is available at the boutique. What percentage of business is from the boutique vs online? “Our brick-and-mortar pre-Covid was 60% to 40% online and now it 20% brick-and-mortar and 80% online,” Karl said.

So, let’s go back to where it all started. The first Aedes Perfumery was located at 15 Christopher Street (downstairs) and opened in 1995.That was very brave of us to do!” Karl states. “We sold bathing suits, bath and body products, and some fragrance at the start.” Their first press came in Vogue and InStyle magazines in 1996. It put them on the map. And, it did not take long for high-profile celebrities to discover Aedes Perfumery. With Karl’s background in fashion, flowers were a part of the DNA of the store from the beginning. It was never promoted as such. Purchases were gift wrap with flowers on top. It soon became the store’s signature creation. Karl handles a flower business on the side that he operates out of his studio in Bushwick. Dior is one of his major accounts.

In 2002 Aedes Perfumery moved next door to 9 Christopher Street. With many stores closing in the neighborhood after 9/11, Robert and Karl were able to negotiate favorable terms on the rent and were now on the street level. Their specialty was working with celebrities, private clients and giving personalized service to all. Having attended a number of events before I inquired how many were  typically held in a year (pre-Covid)? Robert figures three to four (mostly to celebrating a fragrance launch or introducing a new line). Aedes Perfumery moved to its third location in 2016, around the corner at 7 Greenwich Avenue. Grand in presence it appeared  to be a huge success. The reality was that it was horrible for them. Too much of everything. In the prior locations, one had to ring a bell to enter. Here it was an open storefront. A huge difference. It  began to lose the cache of exclusivity.  There was shoplifting  and many tourists spent hours with the staff  only to purchase a sample or two. “We lost the conversation. There was no intimacy. Many of their high ends clients did not want to come by. The village was changing, and our clientele changed. We had to restructure. It was a rough time.” It was time for them to get back to their roots.

what are the perfume brands at Aedes Perfumery

Brands on display. I spy Aedes De Venustas, Memo, and Nomenclature. Guess the rest!

Any discussion regarding Aedes Perfumery must include a discussion on their two brands, Aedes de Venustas and Nomenclature.

What was the genesis of launching these lines? “It goes back to 2005 when we created a limited edition room spray called Aedes de Venustas Parfum d’Ambiance for our ten-year anniversary in partnership with L’Artisan Parfumer. Other Limited Editions followed with 2006 with Molinard in 2006 and Cire Trudon (candle) in 2007.” Their first fragrance was developed in 2008 based on the room spray that had developed a cult following, titled, Aedes de Venustas Eau de Parfum by L’Artisan Parfumeur. Bertrand Duchaufour was the perfumer to develop that scent. “Working with Bertrand Duchafour was natural. A connection was made. it was a given to start with him for our line which launched in 2012. While a number of the fragrances in the line were created with Bertrand Duchaufour, others include Fabrice PellegrinAlberto MorillasRalf Schwieger (whose Iris Nazarena won the 2014 “Perfume Extraordinaire of the Year” at the Fragrance Foundation Awards and became a CaFleureBon Modern Masterpiece), Rodrigo Flores-Roux, and Nathalie Feisthauer.

So, what is the current status of Aedes De Venustas, (whose name comes from Latin for ”temple of beauty”) I asked? “We have been locked in a protracted lawsuit since 2018 that just resolved in our favor last October. We will be relaunching the line sometimes in the third or fourth quarter this year.” Any resentment? Robert stated, ‘‘In German, there is a saying that you use if you don’t like someone which translates as ‘I can’t smell that person.’ ” How appropriate, I will most certainly use that. “Everything is on hold now and is being reproduced with new packaging. The line will stand at ten. There will be three new fragrances and two being discontinued. The fragrances will be the same. There are no reformulations. The relaunch is set for either the third or fourth quarter of this year. The uncertainty being attributed to how long France will be shut down.

Nomenclature perfumes

Karl Bradl is also co-founder of the fragrance brand Nomenclature with Carlos Quintero. The line of ten fragrances focuses on synthetic ingredients. Launched in 2015, Nomenclature is a celebration of design in perfume chemistry that showcases exclusive molecules. The scents are a collaboration with perfumers Frank VoelklNathalie Feisthauer, Patricia Choux and Bertrand Duchaufour.

I’m so surprised that I’ve lived in NYC for so long and I don’t know about Aedes Perfumery! I will definitely have to visit immediately! I love that they specialize in focused customer service. I would definitely love to get some smart recommendations based on my taste. I don’t think I know the Aedes de Venusta line, but based on their top seller list, I may have to get the new Escentric Molecules Mandarin scent.

  • Brad Woolslayer says:

I enjoyed reading how Aedes Perfumery is very customer based and works with them through conversation and sampling to pick the perfect fragrance. I remember loving Aedes de Venustus EDP, since it has a really appealing rhubarb note. I would live to purchase samples of some of these more obscure niche fragrances like L’artisan and Jovoy. I live in Maryland USA.

  • I have never had the pleasure of visiting their shop but love the selection of curated perfumers. I am a fan of serge lutens along with l’artisian and Etat libre d’orange. I most certainly would use the GF to purchase something from one of those houses. In the USA.

  • I loved this interview. It really had the feel of a casual chat with the owners, especially with all of the photos. I’ve never been to the store but it would be lovely to have the chance. So good to hear that their fragrances are coming back with no reformulation! I’m in the US.

  • I have ordered from Aedes Perfumery. So nice to see them featured by CaFleureBon! I believe that I would definitely look at the Shalini fragrances, if I’m lucky to win. Thanks for the opportunity! Mich USA

  • I only buy online so it’s exciting to be able to see the store and how they display their fragrances. I deeply miss being able to go into shops. I also had no idea the company has been around for 25 years! I am a fan of their perfumes. I deeply, deeply love Cierge de Lune. Unfortunately I fell in love with it after it had been discontinued and have been desperately seeking out a bottle since. If I won the giveaway I would purchase Or du Serail by Naomi Goodsir!

    Thanks for the opportunity!
    Washington State, USA

  • Congratulations, Aedes Perfumery, on such an amazing history!
You have always been way ahead of the times.

  • I love the vintage look of this place. New Yorkers are lucky to have access to so many unique and interesting shops. I’ve never been a customer or heard of Aedes de Venustas perfume but they sound beautiful and I if win, I would consider trying one, or maybe something from Vilhelm Parfumerie or Floraiku. From California, USA.

  • I’ve haven’t yet had the privelege of visiting Aedes Perfumery or of smelling any of the Aedes de Venustas fragrances. The boutique looks so beautiful and I would love to have the shopping experience they have worked so hard to cultivate for their customers throughout their storied history. I love that the boutique’s decor is like a “Victorian style-jewel box”– it looks like a dream! I was overwhelmed when trying to imagine what I might buy if I won the gift certificate, because they carry so many things that I love and that I would love to try. Maybe I would check out an Aedes de Venustas fragrance! Thanks for the look and for the opportunity.

  • i have always love small, intimate and elegant perfumery, where the simple visit is like entering a whole new world, filled with flowers, fruits and spices. Every perfumery is a little heaven, for me, a place where I forget about the daily life and I simply enjoy the beauty of fragrances. CA, USA

Great article! Lots of fun and very infornative. I lived just a few blocks away from their original store. Loved the place. Loved the neighborhood back then! So happy for them that their place has been such a success. And it’s great to read about entrepreneurs who did it right at the human scale. If I won I might just get their Iris Nazarena. I’ve sample it and loved it. In Maine now USA

  • Thank you, Hernando, for the wonderful article transporting us to the the gorgeous velvet-lined and peacock feather-festooned jewel-box that is Aedes de Venustas! I have been a customer for almost the entire 25 years, and have to say that some of my happiest moments have been spent wandering the fragrant aisles sniffing and looking for the hidden treasure that would call out to me and change my life. And I found many! When I created Sniffapalooza in 2002, we began having events at the shop and Karl & Robert have been the dearest of friends. My next purchase I think will be the Aedes de Venustas Palissandre d’Or, I have been dreaming of that one for a while.

  • constancesuze says:

I walked past Aedes a few weekends to go and narrowly restrained myself from going in (I’m waiting until my vaccine takes full effect- two weeks!). But I’ve visited Aedes a few times in their different locations when I’ve traveled to NYC over the years. And now that I live here I’m looking forward to visiting more frequently. I have to admit, the idea of ringing the bell and counter service makes me nervous, I always feel pressured both to buy and to socially perform in those kind of situations. But I know Aedes has some soaps and incense that my Mom is lusting for. And I recently had the misfortune to fall in love with Ashore by Amouage, so maybe a shopping trip is in order.

  • I like learning that the shop Aedes Perfumery as well as the owners have so much history with fragrances. I also like how they don’t want to muddy up the experience of visiting Aedes Perfumery. I am new to niche fragrances so I would have to go with what ever I feel like on the day if I win.

  • I enjoyed the history of the brand. My fave Aedes is Iris Nazarena. I have not visiting the perfume shop or any other shop. US

  • I really enjoyed the fact that Aedes spotlights the perfumer very well when discussing their products. I make a yearly trip to NYC and will definitely make a point to stop in there as I did not know this amazing store existed the last time I was there! If I were to win I would most likely use the gift card on a Nomenclature Adr_ett as that type of perfumery intrigues me but would wait until going in person in July so I could try the whole line!
    NY USA

  • It is my dream to visit Aedes boutique I I am very impressed by Hernando’s visit to this beautiful shop and range of high end brands which are presented in Aedes, also love unique atmosphere.
I would love purchasing someone from best-sellers and skin care- Santa Maria Novella.
    USA

  • HiMyNameIsWaste says:

I’ve been a customer of Aedes’ for years (was also a supplier for a few years). Iris Nazarena is my go-to in-house scent, but if I had $75 to put towards another, I’d either buy the original namesake scent or Musc Encense.

I like that the reviewer captured how resilient the store has been. The city may have changed but, thank God, Aedes has not.

I live in Nashville, TN USA.

  • GennyLeigh says:

I remember seeing Aedes Perfumery when I was visiting New York a few years ago (I think it was the Greenwich Ave location). Alas, I was only window shopping and didn’t go inside. I appreciate the personal touch and knowledge Karl and Robert bring yo their store. Much like independent booksellers, they are an invaluable resource to the community. I would love to get an Ulrich Lang NY composition with a gc. Commenting from MD, USA.

  • Wow! That’s quite an accomplishment to keep a boutique store open for 25 years. Congrats to Aedes Perfumery! The personal attention is what shoppers crave and it seems like Karl and Robert know the secret to providing what we all want.

Thank you Hernando, for the great interview! I loved hearing about the history of Aedes Perfumery. Unfortunately, I haven’t had the privilege to visit, but I’m on my way to the website right now. 🙂 I really want to get a bottle of Lubin Gin Fizz for Spring! In the USA

  • Patty Wood says:

This article was great! I loved that Hernando was able to extract some info that explained why the store has moved a lot. Also the owners spoke to him about a legal victory. I wonder what that was all about. This interview only made me want to return to the store now that travel is a bit easier. If I won the gift card, I would purchase Aedes de Venustas Signature Eau de Parfum. Ahhh, it is divine! I live in WV, USA.

  • Pomme de Terrier says:

Seeds’ bottles are a work of art, so it isn’t a surprise to see every aspect of design in their shop be thoughtful and elegant – down the the packaging.
    In the US

  • I enjoyed learning some of the history about the shop and the brands as well. I didn’t know Nomenclature had a connection to Aedes before reading this. Ive not been a customer nor have I had the opportunity to try any of their perfumes. I will definitely check the website out but would love to be able to enjoy the physical location some day it looks and sounds like a great experience. As for what id purchase with the gift card if I won, its hard to say there’s a lot to choose from! Perhaps Poets of Berlin, or Iris Cendre, or Adr_ett, or Mojave Ghost i honestly am not sure, but definitely a perfume. Thanks for the generous draw, from CT USA.

  • I have not been a customer at Aedes Perfumery but one day hope to visit in person! I’ve never tried Aedes de Venustas but would love to purchase CIERGE DE LUNE if I won. I enjoyed Hernando speak of the transformation of Aedes Perfumery. So cool USA

  • roxhas1cat says:

Beautiful shop. I was wondering what had happened to the Aedes fragrance line, will be happy to see it return and what is new. Their bestsellers was an interesting list. I am going straight to their website to see what lines they have reduced their stock to. Love the touch of the flowers with the wrapping. Looks like a store I’d love to visit. Thanks for the chance. USA.

  • I loved Hernando’s review. I really want to visit now. The experience sounds divine. If I won, I think I would probably put it towards a bottle of Naomi Goodsir: Bois d’Ascese. I’ve been longing for that. I am in the US.

  • Liked the interview in Hernando’s review of Aedes Perfumery, and their highly customer focused approach. I haven’t tried anything by Aedes Perfumery, yet, and it’s good to know that they have an online presence. If I were to win this draw, I’d probably go for an oud-based perfume, or from L’ARTISAN PARFUMEUR, or from Amouage, or from MAISON FRANCIS KURKDJIAN, or AEDES DE VENUSTAS  Cierge de Lune… too many good choices. Thanks for the review and draw. Writing from the USA.

  • vickalicious says:

Wow, I REALLY enjoyed reading about Aedes, and the evolution of their business. I only discovered Aedes last year when I was looking to sample some hard-to-find fragrances. I’d not realized that they’ve been around 26 years!! It’s very interesting how they have, in a sense, gone back to their roots-opting for the more intimate connections with customers. I’ve not tried any of the Aedes de Venustas line, but I have tried a couple from Nomenclature and enjoy Psy-Cou. If I were to win the giveaway I would purchase Eau d’Italie edp. Located in the USA.

  • I enjoyed the way Hernando wrote about Aedes Perfumery and Karl and Robert’s history of the story. Starting to now, selling bathing suits and now only fragrances and body products. They specialize in customer service. Love that! I have not sampled any Aedes fragrances. I need to. They sure have great niche fragrances. USA California

  • This petit shop looks like a jewel box. The chandelier and floral arrangements are stunning. I’m not sure what I would purchase if I wond a gift certificate, perhaps a a favorite Serge Lutens or maybe something new to me. Virginia, USA

  • This sounds like places I dream about. And the pictures of the displays are SO enticing. If I won, I might spend the credit on a bottle of Jasmin et Cigarette, or on something for the bath… so hard to decide. I haven’t tried anything from Aedes de Venustas, and I have never visited their shops.
    (SoCal)

  • This boutique sounds lovely! I’ve never visited, but the lines they carry are very impressive. It sounds like such a nice place to visit and very intimate as well. The hosted events would be such a draw for me (pre-Covid!). I had not heard of the Aedes de Venustas line, so I don’t have a favorite, but Palissandre d’Or sounds. If I won, I’d probably purchase Ormonde Jayne Osmanthus. I live in the USA. Thanks for the giveaway!

  • I appreciate learning about this fragrance store/fragrance house; I had only heard of them once before but after having read from this article, I’m now much more familiar with them. I found their history, and their way of doing business, to be interesting. I haven’t tried any of their fragrance releases and I’ve never shopped there before, i.e. online or at their shop. If I win the gift certificate, then I might put it towards a 3.4 oz. Eau De Parfum from Jovoy. I live in MD., U.S.A.

  • forrestanez says:

I liked hearing about how the business evolved. I really love the pictures of the shop. The displays and the decor is just top notch. I have never tried any of Aedes de Venustas. This is also my introduction to Aedes Perfumery. If I won, I would probably use it towards a full bottle of something from Memo Paris or Nasomatto. Thank you for the opportunity!

  • Thank you for the intro to Aedes perfumery. I had not heard of it before and would top up to purchase MFK’s Aqua Universalis if I was lucky enough to win the gift certificate. I’m in USA

  • wallygator88 says:

Thank you for the great review Hernando.

I really loved how introspective this review was. It covered the entire lifespan of this establishment. Of particular interest to me was the section about the move to Greenwich Ave. What seems like a success outwardly was perhaps not what it seemed. It’s generally hard to pivot in these situations and the owners managed it.

I loved seeing the top sellers in the review and it would be great to try SMN’s Melograno. I would love to visit this establishment when the opportunity presents itself in the future.

    Cheers from WI, USA

I thoroughly gormandized this article! The pictures were thoroughly enjoyed as I imagined everyone visiting! Was delighted to hear that Aedes de Venustus perfumes will be relaunched soon (and curious just which 2 are being dropped…I’m hanging on to my Perlagonium for dear life and the Iris is like blood from my veins – I watch it CLOSELY!
I could go on and on, but will relish rereading and revisiting your article! Thanks so much.
