10 best fragrances of 2023 according to cafleurebon editors

10 Best Fragrances of 2023 Karl Topham (l) and Michael Devine (r)

Now that you have heard from Ermano and me, (our best fragrances of 2023 here) and (The 10 Best Fragrances of 2023 here), Ida and Lauryn, WeareScentient and Nicoleta, we continue our Top Ten Best Perfumes 2023 overviews today with Sr. Editor Karl Topham who lives in the UK and Senior Contributor Michael Devine who resides in New Jersey. Their selections have one brand (Electimuss) overlap. Now it’s time to reveal their respective 10 best fragrances of 2023 –Michelyn Camen, Editor-in-Chief

My olfactive exploration of 2023 ushered in a deeper understanding of the big picture of the industry, I experienced the vastness of the ever-growing commercial realm and dustings of artisanal offerings. Much like the baking of a cake where the sponge foundations are laid by the big players whilst the icing is delicately added by independent perfumers. The juxtaposition of a glut of heady ambers holds sway in this realm and like an archaeologist digging for treasure, when one discovers a rare treasure, it is to be held dear to the heart. This year brought swathes of vanilla of varying approaches and qualities just like the ingredient’s myriad of aspects. This year also saw the rise of aesthetics over substance as brands strived for the most outrageous, ultra-lux or crazy presentation purely to catch the eye. Sorting the wheat from the chaff was a challenging proposition for me.

10 Best Fragrances of 2023

I would like to take this opportunity to mention that I missed out on visiting Pitti Fragranze so my opinions are based on what I had the chance to experience this year. My 10 Best Fragrances of 2023 are in no particular order:

The 10 Best Fragrances of 2023

10 Best Fragrances of 2023 collage by Olya©

Astrophil & Stella Shanghai 1930 (Arturetto Landi): Master Perfumer Arturetto Landi (Mane) has crafted a perfume of many layers, which reflects the history and vibrance of Shanghai’s glamorous era. Slightly herbal, somewhat narcotic via the use of tuberose, the perfume is infused with the aroma of succulent plums and mangoes leading to a heady combination of jasmine sambac and ylang-ylang. It is delicate yet deep with a beautiful base of vanilla and tonka bean. @astrophilstellaperfume

27 87 Per Se (Shyamala Maisondieu): Founder Romy Kowalewski celebrated 27 87’s seventh year with the launch of Per Se. The idea was to harken in modernity and evolution of perfumery to explore how a fragrance changes just as people do over time. Per Se has a cloud like structure, the use of aldehydes with orris and bamboo is novel to me, and the base note of angelica root marries the composition beautifully as it enhances the peppery and aromatic qualities also mirroring the musks utilised.@27_87 @shyamalamaisondieu

Ormonde Jayne Arabesque Ormonde Jayne Studio:  Arabesque  is a classic rose and oudh combination accented with blackcurrant and moss. Owner Linda Pilkington has woven a stunningly vibrant tapestry of saffron rose and patchouli to connect east meets west in a harmonious wearable scent which is both powerful and bright. @ormondejayne

Ex Nihilo Paris Blue Talisman (Jordi Fernandez): To celebrate their 10th anniversary, Ex Nihilo Paris launched their newest fragrance Blue Talisman. I was fortunate enough to experience it prior to going live this year at Harrods in London. This versatile wear can suit any occasion. What differentiates it from the crowd is the luscious pear note in the opening which beautifully compliments the ambrofix (Givaudan) in the base. It feels extremely modern and is a superb example of how to marry fruits and woods. @exnihiloparis

Amouage Jubilation 40 (Bertrand Duchaufour): This eagerly awaited incarnation of the original Jubilation XXV keeps the structure of its namesake whilst amping up certain aspects of it. Chief Creative Officer Renaud Salmon wanted to pay homage to the original, respecting the structure and once again Amouage enlisted master perfumer Monsieur Duchaufour to evaluate and enhance the key characteristic of blackberry in the opening and for Jubilation 40 he decided to pair it with blackcurrant. I must say that Jubilation 40 has some of the biggest transitions throughout the course of wearing a fragrance that I have personally experienced. The heart of Scotch Broom and frankincense brings a distinct flavour of honeyed tobacco, whilst the base unleashes a deep accord of woods and a touch of the animalic. @amouageofficial

Matiere Premiere Vanilla Powder( Aurelien Guichard): I cannot deny the sensuality and power of this fragrance. It may not be for everybody but in my opinion Monsieur Guichard has taken the deep facets of Madagascan vanilla and paired them with a sultry coconut and ambroxan to deliver an explosion of goodness. The Palo Santo just keeps things in check to give a lighter touch and without this Vanilla Powder could go over the edge but in M. Guichard’s hands this perfume is majestic. (aureliengichard) @matierepremiereparfums

Electimuss London Vanilla Edesia (Cecile Zarokian): Electimuss London, have really pushed the boundaries of perfumery this year and both Vanilla Edesia and Aquila Absolute hit the mark for me. Vanilla Edesia made my list based on two facts. Firstly, it is orchestrated in a way that vanilla is the central theme which a huge array of ingredients compliment and dance around it. Secondly the quality of raw materials is of a very high standard. Vanilla Edesia makes one think throughout its journey, is it fresh, spicy, gourmand or woody? The use of cumin certainly adds a spicier edge. However, the combination of frankincense, heliotrope and rose around 30 mins in brings a sensuality I was not expecting. A stunning creation. @electimusslondon @cecilezarokianparfumeur

Cherigan Paris Fiesta Habana: Discovered at Esxence this year, Cherigan Fiesta Habana is a celebration of Havana, Cuba. It is a riotous perfume which brings together the nocturnal vibes of the city and transports us to the Roaring Twenties. The olfactive immersion is immediate with cigar smoke, dark rum and marihuana. Delving deeper the chocolate facets of immortelle mixed with tonka bean and sandalwood give a creamy and sumptuous tonality. This is a must for those who love a dark and boozy scent profile and the performance is superb – the perfect party perfume. @cheriganparis

Plume Impression, Royal Bourbon (Amandine Galliano): Another amazing find at Esxence was Plume Impression, Royal Bourbon. Thickly laced with rum this scent speaks of coziness, warming oneself by the hearth and listening to tales of bygone eras. This is a serious take on spices and alcohol with a bitter sweetness which keeps enticing one to smell its intoxicating elegance. The initial surprise of licorice which works beautifully with cinnamon and ginger giving way to a heart of tobacco and caramel; soothing and warming, it’s a fire crackling composition with hidden depth. The vanilla is not sickly and almost tempers this ambitious and explosive mélange of ingredients. @plumeimpression

By Killian Smoking Hot (Mathieu Nardin): A fusion of intriguing notes hit me on smelling this take on an apple hookah. Smoking shisha is not something I am experienced with. However, to my nose this fragrance makes me reminisce taking in the delectable scents of Christmas Cake, the combination of spices and booze mixed with my father’s predilection for imbibing the odd cigar in the festive season wafting through the air. The apple note is intriguing as it has a twist of cassis to me. The cinnamon is definitely evident and while I do not pick up on moss per se, there is certainly a verdant aspect running throughout the composition which holds the vanilla bourbon in check. @killianparis @mat_nd

Most Innovative Perfume House: Sana Jardin Championing Beyond Sustainability.

Socially conscious and environmentally responsible, Sana Jardin’s philosophy of ‘sustainable luxury’ opened the discussion of how perfume could be created in a way that would be beneficial to the co-operatives of harvesters and help them flourish independently, utilizing recyclable materials such as compost and waste flowers discarded by factories. Founder Amy Christiansen Si-Ahmed blazed the trail for other perfume brands to follow and now in an era where companies strive for low carbon footprints, the blueprint laid out by Sana Jardin has been taken on by other socially and environmentally conscious organisations.  @sanajardin

Best fragrances of 2023

10 Best Fragrances of 2023 Honourable Mention: Because we could only have 10 on our lists, all five below are deserving of an award

Soma Parfums Serene: I do enjoy citrus scents which have a touch of complexity and Soma Serene delivers. It has an upscale but relaxed vibe. The lime and mint perfectly balance around bergamot in the opening, geranium keeps the sparkle going whilst basil adds the herbal aspect. This transitions into creamy and musky territory in the base courtesy of sandalwood, cedar and musk and a subtle warmth emanates from the use of ambroxan. @somaparfums

Francesca Bianchi Byzantine Amber (Francesca Bianchi): Thick, dense and full of splendour, Byzantine Amber gives one a rarefied experience of what the smell of Constantinople would have been like in the middle ages. The spices of the region come forth in the form of cinnamon, the church like incense wafting throughout the grand halls and the deeply rich resins utilised such as benzoin, labdanum and styrax bring across the golden hues of Orthodox iconography.

Scentologia Syn.ergy  (Pierre Constantin Guerros): Tropical scents have been prevalent this year and Scentologia Syn.ergy is the best of this genre I have experienced this year. The lush fruits burst across the opening then there is a spark of spice and heat from saffron, a touch of the gourmand via almond all this on a nuclear base of musks, cedar and moss. Mass-appealing but done excellently. @scentologia_perfumes

Thameen London Bravi(Bruno Jovanovic): This was the most intriguing release of 2023 from Thameen London in my humble opinion. The note breakdown should not work on paper. However, the wearing is a subtle blend of spicy, floral, gourmand aspects which is pleasant. Honey and tuberose present a distinct mix, the ginger gives a little freshness. As the perfume transitions it becomes creamier due to the vanilla and walnut milk. @thameenfragrance @cchonguk

Le Labo Myrrhe 55: New to the City Exclusives range and with 55 ingredients thus the numerical reference in its name, it is a warm and resinous chypre perfume. However, the florals lift the composition. The myrrh being front and center supported by oud and ambergris accords which contain synthetic compounds aligning Le Labo’s vision as a vegan brand.

Top Ten Fragrances 2023

In 2023 more than ever, we’re bombarded by stimuli—be it turning on the television, doom-scrolling through social media, or listening to the person next to us at the supermarket yelling into a speakerphone. It’s becoming harder than ever to find solace; that’s why it’s more important than ever to find a source of serenity and escape. Some of the most precious things in life are invisible: empathy, love, faith, grace and … perfume. In these turbulent times, there’s nothing wrong with turning to art, invisible or otherwise, to remind us of the beauty in this world or to transport us to the world we envision. In selecting my top 10 fragrances for 2023, I noticed a pattern. These fragrances take me back, take me on a journey, or take me to a place where art is the ferryman. I’m grateful to have this understanding and grateful to the artists behind these creations who’ve shared their craft with us in the ineffable, invisible, unspoken language of the soul.

Top Ten Best Perfumes 2023

Michael’s 10 Best Fragrances of 2023 collage by Michael

Creed Absolu Aventus (Jean Christophe Herault): I still have fond memories of getting my bottle of Aventus at NYC’s Creed Boutique on launch day in 2010 and I’m thankful to have experienced this legendary creation when it was new, before the flood of aspirants who turned this innovative olfactive architecture into its own category of perfumery. Sure, there’s a gazillion copies of Aventus, but to my nose, only a Creed can smell like a Creed. Absolu Aventus calls to mind a full orchestra playing “Ain’t Nothing Like the Real Thing, Baby” an octave down from the original key. And I’ll happily sing along!  @jeanchristopheherault @creedfragrance

Xerjoff Empiryan: It boggles my mind that Xerjoff’s latest entry into their “Kemi Blue” line isn’t sending the fragrance community into a frenzy. What a sexy concoction! This tobacco-driven stunner, with notes of cypriol, tobacco leaves, Atlas cedar, incense from Oman, patchouli from Singapore and vanilla from Madagascar is a fragrant excursion to exotic lands and ancient traditions. This could easily be the second car in the Naxos hype-train. @xerjoff

Electimuss London Gladiator Oud (Julien Rasquinet): Stepping into 2023’s olfactive arena comes Gladiator Oud, a rugged composition that pays homage to the spirit of ancient warriors. While Mr. Rasquinet’s inspiration may have been a clash of swords, the result is pure harmony. Notes of honey, hay, and saffron set the stage in hues of brown and gold while the fierceness of oud, patchouli and vetiver enter the coliseum with great fanfare. Crafted with meticulous precision, this perfume artfully captures the essence of a gladiator—winning. @electimusslondon @julienrasquinet

For the Scent of It Grand Soleil (Michael Schrammel): Grand Soleil, from artisan perfumer (and ÇaFleureBon Notes from The Lab editor) Michael Schrammel was released just in time for summer and provided the redolent threshold I needed to escape the real world, relax my furrowed brow and allow myself to unwind. With its top burst of bergamot, lemon, goji berry and Shiso leaf, Grand Soleil has one of the most vibrant and sparkling openings I’ve ever experienced; it’s utterly transportive. I wore this fragrance for every minute of my lakeside summer vacation, liquid-linking the scent to an idyll retreat that I can now carry with me throughout the year. Moreover, Grand Soleil further establishes Michael Schrammel as a creative force who is capable of producing wonderous compositions in any genre. @forthescentofit

Guerlain Habit Rouge Privé (Delphine Jelk): Habit Rouge, in its various concentrations and formulations, has been a stalwart homebase in my perfume journey and has remained in my all-time top 10. In recent years, Guerlain has made efforts to modernize this 1965 classic, such as they did with last year’s Habit Rouge L’Instinct, a verdant admixture that lost the forest for the cannabis plants. But, with Rouge Privé, Ms Jelk has taken a paradoxical step forward in recognizing and enhancing the time-honored elements which made it so wonderful in the first place, particularly emphasizing Habit Rouge’s unique pairing of leather and lemon fused into the comforting familiarity of the signature “Guerlainade.” There’s a refined sexiness to Habit Rouge Privé, like a trip to the barbershop before date-night. @guerlain @delphinejelk

Gallagher Fragrances Purple Powder (Daniel Gallagher): With prominent notes of sweet acorn, toasted cinnamon, hay absolute, patchouli and Madagascar vanilla absolute, Purple Powder may not be that purpley nor that powdery—but it is magnificent. Soon after its launch, Purple Powder quickly became a favorite among some of the team here at ÇaFleureBon, (Michelyn just awarded it in her top 10 fragrances of 2023). As I wrote in my recent review, “The perfume manages to embody the color’s duality—regal yet approachable, calming yet vibrant. It’s also surprisingly cohesive and intentional. I wore Gallagher Fragrances Purple Powder for a week straight (unusual behavior for a fragrance addict), partly to prepare for a learned review, but partly because it’s absolutely addictive and easily one of the best releases of 2023.” @gallagherfragrances

Roja Parfums Taif Oud (Roja Dove): Roja Parfums’ uplifting and soul-stirring Taif Aoud (which I once referred to as “atomized optimism”) was originally an exclusive to London’s Fortnum and Mason, but has now, thankfully, gotten a wider release. This is a glorious addition to Roja’s Aoud collection that honors Taif, the summer capital of Saudi Arabia, and the eponymous roses that grow specific to this mystical region. Beyond the lush rose-upon-rose accords, the simmering scent of Frankincense and Oud Bakhoors ground this regal composition in a meditative abstraction. @rojaparfums

Rogue Perfumery Targhee Forest (Manuel Cross):Taking cues from classics like Pour Monsieur, Heritage and Patou Pour Homme, Manuel Cross has once again used his masterful understanding of the golden era(s) to create something entirely new and exciting for a modern audience who appreciates vintage perfumery. Targhee Forest smells like all of those classics while smelling like none of them. I’d imagine this is what the boardrooms of TV’s Mad Men series would smell like—minus the cigarette smoke. According to Mr. Cross, Targhee Forest (the actual National Forest) near his home is his personal escape, to wit: “I leave stress behind and spend time with nature. The silence of the forest cuts me off from the commotion at home as if the commotion had never begun.” Whether you escape to the forest or escape to the past, this timeless creation is for you. @rogueperfumery

Aaron Terence Hughes Unicorn Elixir (Aaron Terence Hughes): Sure, Aaron Terence Hughes is a polarizing figure and his cheekily-named concoctions might melt the Mitsouko off a classicist, but beyond the urban flash is a gifted perfumer who creates fragrances that smell really, good. While he may list notes of “MDMA” or, as in the case of a new release with a name I can’t bear to include here, a note of cocaine, there’s something actually addictive in the ATH DNA. Just when I thought I couldn’t get enough, along comes Unicorn Elixir, his first attar. With 35% rose absolute infused with a proprietary “Unicorn” oud at 5%, with additional notes of raspberry, sandalwood, patchouli, guaiac wood and vanilla, Unicorn Elixir further proves that Aaron Terrence Hughes is the real deal, a serious perfumer who selects and respects the finest raw materials. It’s been years since I’ve experienced a composition that moved me to tears, but the sheer beauty of Unicorn Elixir touched my soul. @aaronterencehughes

Solstice Scents Upstairs Window(Angela St. John):Fittingly, it was Solstice Scents ’Manor which was my doorway into the olfactive dreamscape of Foxcroft, the fictional town which serves as inspiration for many of the brand’s stately creations. Over the years, we’ve explored the manor’s attic, the kitchen, the library and more, each represented by a hauntingly beautiful perfume. Just in time for Halloween came Upstairs Window, which Angela St. John (the creative force behind the brand whose writing is as magnificent as her fragrances) describes as “a warm delicately spiced pools of glowing amber combine with rivulets of pure golden beeswax and liquefied dragon’s blood resin, wrapped in a sheer veil of fog.” It’s all that and two stories more. @solsticescents

Best Discovery: Meo Fusciuni Parfums

While ooh-ing and aah-ing over 2023’s newness, I found myself late to another party. This was the year I finally discovered the already-expansive library from the Italian luxury house of Meo Fusciuni. From the spellbinding Narcotico to the shadowy  Notturno to the heart-wrenching beauty of Odor 53, Giuseppe Imprezzabile has created a line-up with more than a little magic. These are creations one would expect to find while stumbling into an old-world apothecary shop on a cobblestone street in Italy—composed with love, thoughtfulness and a mastery of the craft. Magnifico! @meofusicuni_parfums

  • Thank you Karl and Michael for your fantastic top 10.
I’m delighted to have been introduced to the house of Sana Jardin through this article. I think it’s very good and important that the perfume industry is also developing into a more sustainable one. Their creations are definitely going on my watch list.

The Fiesta Habana by Cherigan Paris sounds like a modern Cuban themed fragrance that doesn’t overdo it with the cherry tobacco and adds nice dark accents with rum and resins. I’ve heard that it’s so close to Herod that you could almost call it a clone. Only with better longevity.

I would be delighted to win Vanilla Edesia from Electimuss and I’m from the EU.

  • Ramses Perez says:

This list has some heavy hitters that have come out this year, some that I want for myself too (Vanilla Edesia, Jubilation 40 and Taif Rose). I also love that each one of those highlights a different note so there’s a little bit for everyone. This is my first year following CeFleurBon closely and I love how varied each contributor has made their list. I would love to win Vanilla Edesia as I’m a big vanilla lover myself and it’s my favorite note. Cheers from NJ, USA.

  • Thank you Karl and Michael or sharing your top 10, all which are fantastic selections. And how exciting of a draw, especially Purple Powder which I would be certain to love and wear confidently… I see why it made Michelyn’s top 10. Oh how I love a good touch of cinnamon in fragrance.
    John from USA

  • There are a lot of gems listed but all the ones listed, the one that intrigued me the most was Aaron Terence Hughes Unicorn Elixir; a scent that took 5 years in development to create. It would have to be a masterpiece, I have been in love with a lot of the rose scents that have been coming out in the last couple of years and the reviews saying the rose in this scent is a powerhouse rose absolute combined with the raspberry and Gaiac wood notes, I would love to experience this attar for myself. USA

  • I would love to win purple powder, I’m in maryland. What I’m intrigued by is the variety, especially in this list. I love For the Scent of It and Gallagher fragrances, so I’m enjoying seeing both on this list. I have considered buying from solstice scents, but just haven’t done it yet ( my want list IS long), but seeing one of their scents on this list makes me really want to dive in.

  • I love the year end best of lists.
Mainly to find out about some gems that I have missed during the year.
I would choose the Electimus London Vanilla Edesia for my scent if I should win.
    Thanks for the giveaways

  • kornel.tajnai says:

Very interesting selection by both of you.

From the first list posted, I am quite okay with Matiere Premiere Vanilla Powder, however I felt it too bright on my skin. Compared to other creations by the house, I dont feel that much of creativity, it is a very safe mixture that is not necessarily something bad!

Astrophil and Stella sounds very inviting, i can feel the magic with all its components. Unfortunately we dont have the brand any longer in Budapest, but it would be something for me.

Ormonde Jayne Arabesque is a new discovery for me. I was not too familiar with this UK fragrance house, even after trying many of their fragrances, I could hardly connect with any of them. Arabasque is an interesting one, I tend to like rose and oud combos, and blackcurrant makes it pretty mine. I like how East and West meet in the ingredienta, and it slightly reminds me of the storytelling by F.Bianchi for Encounters where the west is represented by the iris/iris root, and oud stands for the east.
The O. Jayne version stands a bit even closer to me, somehow blackcurrant puts a spell on me all the time and I can hardly resist. And rose is a much more natural partner of oud than the cold iris.

The second list is even more interesting for me, lets say more my taste.
Gallagher perfumes is one of my favourite discoveries of the year, alongside to Meo Fusciuni. It took me some time to deep dive into their rich offer but almost all of them very inviting immediately.
If you are not familiar with their offer, it worth to dedicate a day for getting familiar with both of them!

I would be happy to win Vanilla Edesia by Electimuss and I’m from the EU.

  • Purple Powder has an acorn accord?! What a great idea. Sweet, toasty, patchouli, vanilla, hay —- HEY, what a combination. I sort of love that the name seems to have nothing to do with the scent. Is this a scent for others, yourself or both? Remains to be seen but darn I’d love to find out. I live in NY.

  • I love the variation in the Top Tens. I’m embarrassed to admit that many are new to me, but it’s got me researching them all!

Thank you for offering this giveaway. I appreciate the generosity of the participating houses. I would be interested in Gallagher Fragrance’s Purple Powder. I live in the US.

  • Their selections reflect their personal tastes and preferences, as well as their expertise and knowledge of the fragrance industry. They seem to favor complex, creative, and unique compositions that showcase high-quality ingredients and craftsmanship. They also appreciate fragrances that evoke emotions, memories, and stories, as well as those that challenge the conventional boundaries of perfume genres and gender. I think their selections are interesting and informative, and they might inspire some people to explore new fragrances and discover new favorites. However, I also think that fragrance is a very subjective and personal matter, and what works for one person might not work for another. Therefore, I would not take their selections as definitive or authoritative, but rather as suggestions or recommendations that might spark curiosity and conversation. Ultimately, the best fragrance for anyone is the one that they love and enjoy wearing. I live in Trzebnica, Poland, EU. I’d love to win Vanilla Edesia.

  • A huge thank you to Karl and Michael for composing their respective lists and for sharing their thoughts with all of us throughout the year. I was really excited to see so many indie brands that I love included here. For the Scent of It, Rogue, Gallagher, and Aaron Terence Hughes deserve the recognition for the wonderful growth they have each shown. Should my comment be selected, I would go with one of these houses and chose Purple Power from Gallagher. Best of luck to everyone. I live in NC, USA.

  • Thank you Karl and Michael for sharing your top 10 fragrances. Out of all of the wonderful fragrances, what caught my attention was the description of Aaron Terence Hughes Unicorn Elixir. I’ve never heard of “unicorn” oud before and I’m very interested to try this one out along with his other perfumes that I , indeed, can’t include the names here.

“Unicorn Elixir further proves that Aaron Terrence Hughes is the real deal, a serious perfumer who selects and respects the finest raw materials. It’s been years since I’ve experienced a composition that moved me to tears, but the sheer beauty of Unicorn Elixir touched my soul.”

Now that’s something I would like to experience.

I would love to win Purple Powder as I recently bought their Tonka Peach and immediately fell in love! Gallagher was generous enough to send me a sample of Purple Powder, which had good reviews, and I understood why upon first sniff! Instant love at first sniff just like their Tonka Peach!

    From Seattle WA, USA

  • “The sponge foundations” lol. Brilliant! Shame about the aesthetics over substance too, but I suppose the ever-steady monotony of sugary releases need to be cut by something. Difficult to stand out when there’s so much competition for attention. Definitely have to agree with Jubilation 40 myself. Probably in my top 3 of the year, despite it technically being a flanker. But the OG has a special place in my heart, and this year may actually see its official replacement as my traditional January 1st fragrance with the new 40 as my old decant finally runs dry and newer formulations of XXV are continually berated. A similar situation with Guerlain’s HRRouge Prive, a bottle that I was very grateful to secure from a close contact, albeit its somewhat inflated price tag for what it is. But it’s a wonderful adaptation by Delphine and worthy of the name.

Very interested to hear about Targhee Forest, since it’s been high up on my to-try list. I consistently find myself being drawn to Manuel’s work these days, and might even consider Rogue in my top 5 brands that embody my personality profile. Really would love to try Empiryan, Grand Soleil, Fiesta Habana and a few more from Electimus too.

But no matter how much I sample, it always feels like a losing battle. lol I’m sure others feel the same way. By the time I get around to a scent, it seems like its continuation is already in question. Whereas once, FOMO was something to be admonished or even pittied, it’s recently taken on a whole new uncomfortable reality. Definitely a fascinating psychological phenomenon there ripe for exploration. Anyway, I hope everyone reading has a magnificently fragrant new year! May all of your expected and unexpected perfume dreams come true. Here’s to the evolution of the industry. Cheers! From Canada. (My choice – Purple Powder.)

  • One thing I did not expect to see in these lists is Absolu Aventus! I’m glad to see Rogue’s Targhee Forest. I will forever remember that fragrance as one that I won on this blog then saw the notification one day late and hence never got it. I was so devastated hahah. But I got my one sample later and I absolutely loved it. I would love to win Purple Powder. I’m a fan of Gallagher Fragrances and this one sounds really interesting! I’m from Illinois, US.

  • In your list, I like Vanille Edesia, Gladiator Oud from Electimuss, Vanilla Powder from Matiere Premiere, Royal Bourbon Plume Impression, Fiesta Havana from Cherigan, Jubilation XXV 40. The one I want to win is Vanille Edesia from Electimuss because it was created by Cecile Zarokian and there are many perfumes from this nose that I love: Epic Woman by Amouage, Tobacco Royal also by Amouage, Green Water by Jacques Fath. I like the fact that you are interested in high perfumery (Electimuss) but also in artisanal and independent perfumery (Rogue perfumery). I live in France, EU.

  • Another year is at its end, I enjoyed learning about Karl Topham and Michael Devine 23′ best and I’ll try to express my opinion on the topic.
I like the archeologist digging for rare treasures parallel

Electimuss London Vanilla Edesia is a masterpiece , my choice
Thanks to Karl Topham, Michael Devine and for the giveaway
    From EU

  • These lists are fantastic reads. Taif Rose sounds fabulous from Roja Dove. Targhee Forest is calling to me with its name alone. Vanilla Edesia would be my choice, if lucky. Mich USA

  • Really digging Michael and Karl’s top ten, so many exquisite selections. A brand that I’ve wanted to try for quite sometime now, Aaron Terence Hughes Unicorn Elixir sounds enticing with its facets of “unicorn” oud, makes you contemplate…did I actually see “unicorn” in there! With additional notes of raspberry, sandalwood, patchouli, guaiac wood, vanilla and rose. I can appreciate a perfumer who isn’t afraid of and selects, respects the finest raw materials. If I had to order a drink I’d most likely want something that represented Plume Impression, Royal Bourbon. This one sounds intoxicating with its thickly laced rum, licorice working in concert with cinnamon and ginger, giving way to a heart of tobacco and caramel. If this doesn’t satiate your inner boozy scented desires, I don’t know what will. I’d like to win Vanilla Edesia. Thank you for the opportunity. New York, USA.

  • Sorohan Adriana says:

Vanilla Edesia It’s a very sophisticated and complex perfume, but it’s also a mass appealing, addictive and easy to wear fragrance.
The complex pyramid of exceptional ingredients create a truly original luxury perfume of contrasts: contemporary yet timeless; soft but bold; comforting and carnal.

After Ida Meister and Lauryn Beer, according to my preferences it’s time for Karl Topham and Michael Devine, their observations are based on overstuffed of ambers markets, how rare is to find a true treasure and ultra luxury presentations according to Karl. Michael is found of serenity and escape, and throwback fragrance journeys.
Out of all their picks ,including honorable mentions I’m interested in
Ormonde Jayne Amberesque because of how harmonious rose and oud are
Amouage Jubilation 40 because it’s a build on top of Jubilation XXV, changed but still relying on the classic
Matière Premiere Vanilla Powder because of high percentage of powdered resins, overdose of raw materials, coconut and sensuality
Electimuss London Vanilla Edesia because of the quality of raw ingredients, combination of rose ,frank, heliotrope on top of exquisite vanilla with spicy edge
Cherigan Paris Fiesta Habana because of the old Havana parties and party time aroma
Plume Impression Royal Bourbon because the serious take of spices and alcohol, bitter sweetness and hidden depth
By Killian Smoking Hot because of cina, cigars and boozy Christmas cake aspects
Thameen London Bravi because of spicy, floral and gourmand aspects
Xerjoff Empiryan because of the tobacco, oudy patchouli, vanilla Inc from Oman
Gallagher Fragrances Purple Powder because of lack of experience with the brand
Roja Parfums Taif Oud because it sounds classy
Aaron Terence Hughes Unicorn Elixir because it’s the only attar here , and the very high concentration of rose absolute and oud.
Karl Topham wad able to capture my interest with how Electimuss London are pushing the boundaries of perfumery this year, and Vanilla Edesia lingering resonance of fresh, gourmand and woody ingredients. My preference because of Karl is Vanilla Edesia
Thank you for your 2023 observations, and the generosity

While I’m enjoying reading about the picks – it’s like peeping into someone’s house, when the curtains are pulled – I liked the introduction that both Karl and Michael gave to their top 10.
Karl is absolutely right when he made the association between navigating the ocean of yearly releases with archeology diggings – one must also possess knowledge and skills, not only a shovel.
“Some of the most precious things in life are invisible: empathy, love, faith, grace and … perfume.” – really nothing to add here, this should be printed on scent boxes, really :).
I liked the fact that Michael mentioned Habit Rouge as being always present in his all time top 10 – not a small feature for an old designer house creation.
I’m in EU, so I’ m mentioning Vanilla Edesia as the designated dreamy prize, if I’d be so lucky to win the draw – I’m one that needs convincing vanilla is not only meant for cakes .

  • Wow, Karl and Michael’s selections are incredibly diverse and they highlighted some intriguing fragrances that have caught my attention.

The selection of Electimuss London Vanilla Edesia by Cecile Zarokian sounds captivating with its central theme of vanilla and the intriguing blend of ingredients dancing around it. The incorporation of cumin for a spicier edge and the sensuality brought by frankincense and rose definitely makes this fragrance stand out for me.

Roja Parfums Taif Oud by Roja Dove also sounds enchanting, especially with its homage to the roses specific to the mystical region of Taif in Saudi Arabia. Moreover, the Sana Jardin Championing Beyond Sustainability is fascinating, not just for its scent but also for its philosophy of sustainable luxury.

It’s impressive how each fragrance seems to tell a story or evoke a specific feeling or place. The selection feels like a journey through various landscapes, eras, and emotions. Very grateful for this overviews by Karl and Michael.

I live in the EU (Germany) and I would love to win Electimuss London`s Vanilla Edesia.

  • rose and oudh combination accented with blackcurrant and moss. Owner Linda Pilkington has woven a stunningly vibrant tapestry of saffron rose and patchouli to connect east meets west in a harmonious wearable scent which is both powerful and bright. @ormondejayne. This sounds like a magical concoction really intrigued by the notes especially Patchouli and Rose a great pick by Karl. A beautiful description by Michael this sounds like a fantastic fragrance the roses, frankincense, oud and bakhoor just add an air of mystery and exoticism to this blend. If I am lucky to win I would love to Vanilla edesia by Electimuss. Thanks a million from the UK

  • Unfortunately I haven’t tried anything from these, although there are a few that I wanted: Jubilation 40, Smoking Hot, Gladiator Oud, Byzantine Amber being on top from this list.
There is a lot variety in the lists which is good and I imagine it’s hard to chose from all there new releases that you guys smell every year.
Talking about Meo Fusciuni, I did also discover the line this year and I like most of them, my favorite being Little Song, which I have a bottle of.
Thanks, I’m in the EU. Would like that Electimuss, their bottle would look nice in my collection 🙂

  • Cherigan Fiesta Habana is a celebration of Havana, Cuba. This sounds like something right up my alley rum, chocolate and booze this sounds amazing. A great pick by Karl. boggles my mind that Xerjoff’s latest entry into their “Kemi Blue” line isn’t sending the fragrance community into a frenzy. I am in love with the notes tobacco leaves, omani frankincense and Patchouli this is a fragrance that has definitely piqued my curiosity. If I am successful I would love to win the Electimuss Vanilla Edesia. Thanks a lot from the United Kingdom

  • Thanks for the overview! I agree that Meo Fusciuni is a great discovery as a brand. I have Little Song and Narcotico both are very beautiful and creative scents. Also agree that Smoking Hot by Kilian is intriguing due to the apple shisha accords. It was one of my best buys from 2023. This selection from Karl and Michael sparks my interest in Electimuss Vanilla Edesia, Gladiator Oud and Aquila Absolute. This house has some really delightful perfumes (e.g. Capua, Imperium, Vici Leather) and their new releases must be nice too. I would be extremely happy to win Vanilla Edesia. Greetings from EU.

  • Bravo Michael for the heartfelt and beautifully written intro to your Top 10.
In times like these, we need art more than ever.
To a hopefully more serene and inspiring 2024.
    My best wishes from Paris,
    Tom

  • ianbradleyandrews says:

I love reading lists like this as I live in a small town that doesn’t get many perfumes at all. All of these sound so complex and delightful. I’d love to win the electimus. I live in Indiana.

  • I was intrigued by all of the selections, but especially by the inclusion of Meo Fusciuni as the Best Discovery (it was mine, too!) and Sana Jardin as the Most Innovative Perfume House. This year I tried a lot of new scents but Sana Jardin stood out as a clear winner. I really appreciate the ethos of the brand and the way that the materials (rose, vetiver, etc) are combined to create individual perfumes, but with similar DNA. I can layer Sana Jardin because each perfume complements the other, but I can also choose one that fits my mood for that day. I ordered the sample set and was surprised to find that I liked every single one! That’s a rarity for me and says something about Sana Jardin.

  • Thank you Carl and Michael for your Top 10 picks . Electimuss London fragrance house has me interested. Thanks Electimuss London bottle of Vanilla Edesia sounds wonderful. USA

  • Fantastic choises by big guys Karl and Michael here. They truly delivered great fragrance alternatives to try and they are great 2023 marterpieces.
I would love to win Electimuss London Vanilla Edesia. I would love to try this amazing fragrance, I love the fragrance house and it is totally amazing.
    USA, VA here.

  • What an extensive and truly fascinating list of perfumes. I own Ormonde Jayne Arabesque and love it.
Guerlain, Xerjoff, Roja and small artisan brands like For the Scent of It and Gallagher.
Michael’s opening was very meaningful about something’s being invisible.
I would like either of the two offered
Electimuss Vanilla Edesia or Gallagher Purple Powder which i saw on Michelyn’s list
    Usa
    Here’s to 2024

  • I am very curious to smell Vanilla Edesia
A vanilla that conquers you, it seems to me to be an extraordinary composition, seductive but not heavy. When the harmony of the ingredients is masterfully dosed, the result is unsurpassed.
It seems like a beautiful olfactory journey, a desire for many and a reality for few.
    Linda (EU)

  • Wow Karl and Michael you really cultivated an impressive list of the top picks from 2023. So many I have never heard of or sniffed, so many to add to my list as my fragrance journey expands and goes in every direction! Thank you for this – going to bookmark the article so that I can refer back to it and check what the specialty boutiques have in stock to be able to explore and try these. I definitely want to encounter Solstice Scents and Meo Fusciuni, though I have not found any places locally to smell these houses. But they, like many on these lists are now fully on my radar.
For the giveaway I would love to smell and try Purple Powder – I already enjoy Gallagher’s Rose all Dae (I like to wear it in the cold winter months), and want to try more from this house for sure.
Thank you for the giveaway and all the education and dedication!
    From Canada!

  • I have just possibly realized why it is that we all get so excited about, and so addicted to perfumes, regardless of whether we smell them, look at them and their flacons or read about them: they all transport us to different places, moments and moods. Just like a Cafleurebon article, especially a “best of” kind of it, which carries us from a beach to a church, from Havana to Constantinople, from the twenties to the future, from innocence to sinfulness. It is a journey that is so easy, yet so fascinating to take!
Thank you Karl and Michael for your selections and the wonderful journey.
I would love to win Vanilla Edesia and experience this precious raw material and also the symphony for the senses brought about by the heliotrope, frankincense and rose, and the intriguing touch of cumin.
    Commenting from the EU.

  • I love that the favorites mentioned span all categories: floral, oud, gourmand, woody, even indie! Purple Powder sounds so unique, I would love to try it. Thank you for exposing us to so many talented artists. Happy new year!
    CA, US

  • It´s been a year of vanillas. tobacco, plums and frankincense perhaps it seems to me. Orient – near and far, exotic lands and dreamy ingredients are still dominant in the world of fragrance. I would love to own a bottle of Astrophil and Stella Shanghai 1930. In this competition, I go for Vanilla Edesia, as I live in the EU.

  • Amazing selections by Karl and Michael! I would love to try them all, specially “Bravi” and “Targhee Forest” and I’m also dying to discover “Meo Fusciuni Parfums”.
I live in Portugal, EU and would love to win Electimuss London “Vanilla Edesia”.
    Thank you all! Happy Holidays!

  • I have notices after 5 parts Vanilla Powder is liked by many. It was nice to see the Aventus flanker on a list. For the draw I’d pick the Vanilla Edesia. US

  • These lists are amazing. Unfortunately I have not tried any of these. My choice would be Vanilla Edesia. Thank you for the chance. I live in Europe.

  • A lovely compilation of fragrances by Karl and Michael. I adore Solstice Scents and Angela’s mastery, Upstairs Window sounds wonderful. I appreciate Sana Jardin’s efforts towards sustainability and hope that perfumery as a whole can meaningfully move towards sustainability. I would love to win Vanilla Edesia. Thank you for your generosity. From the UK.

  • I love Cecile Zarokian’s style and works. I mean, everything I have tried so far and was created by her, I wish I had a full bottle of. I know when I see that the nose behind a fragrance is Cecile Zarokian I can not go wrong, so I am sure that Electimus Vanilla Edesia is going to be another love for me. Thank you! Europe

  • Let the Top 10 of 2023 games … continue with the next round : Karl Topham (UK) vs Michael Devine (New Jersey)
Same foundation, different icing … rightly said x2.
After reading the article I can say I like Karl Topham and Michael Devine picks equally. Out of Karl Topham picks i like
Amouage Jubilation 40 – both Jubilation XXV and bolder Jubilation 40 are new to me. I like how complex the fragrance, it’s not just a high concentration. Honeyed tobacco, different dark berries and incense.
Matière Premiere Vanilla Powder – vanilla reimagined , raw and smelling natural
Electimuss London Vanilla Edesia – novelty , high quality ingredients, lots of interesting nuances fresh , spicy , gourmand and woody , stunning creation i trust you Karl.
Plume Impression, Royal Bourbon – lots of alcohol, caramel and liquorice
By Killian Smoking Hot – Christmas party with cake and booze
From Karl honorable mentions I like
    Scentologia Syn.ergy – tropical vacation
Serenity and escape are a must for me too .
Out of Michael Devine picks I like
Xerjoff Empiryan – exotic tobacco driven stunner
Electimuss London Gladiator Oud – on the arena are oud , patchouli and vetiver
Roja Parfums Taif Oud – regal rose composition
Aaron Terence Hughes Unicorn Elixir – the attar moved Michael to tears
My pick is Electimuss London Vanilla Edesia , exquisite fragrance i’d really like to win
    Thank you, and fingers crossed
    Lisbon Portugal (EU)

  • I’ve seen Meo Fusciuni appear on a number of top 10 lists and I’m so interested in smelling them! I love Iris perfumes and am also interested in sampling Purple Powder. I’m in Canada, and would like my name entered for Purple Powder.

  • Like Michael, I appreciate fragrances that can take me on a journey of discovery. More than ever I search for perfumes that tell a story or open my senses to a new way of thinking. It’s an artisan driven approach to scent and I’m thankful for CaFleureBon for introducing me to so many visionaries. Gallagher Fragrances is one of those new (to me) interesting houses and I would love to win Purple Powder. I’m in MD, USA.

  • I love that even though we got so many of these lists there are still new perfumes being added among the CFB contributors. I’m certainly updating my list of what samples to look out for. Neat to see Solstice Scents featured here, I haven’t tried Angela’s new releases but I have a soft spot for the house and quite a few bottles in my stash. This draw for part 5 is awesome, I’d love to win either, but maybe Gallagher’s Purple Powder sounds a little bit more exciting for me to wear. I’m in the USA, thank you for the draw!

  • Sandi McDonald says:

Finally had a chance to smell Killian Smoking Hot! Amazing! Love so many of the Electimuss fragrances also. Thank you for great content!

  • Dusting off artisanal offerings is something a lot of perfume lovers are craving actually, me… I’m somewhere in between, but others are actually looking for such fragrances.
-Ormonde Jayne Arabesque I’m sure is…. everything i don’t expect it to be , often Ormonde Jayne fragrances do smell so different to me , than the notes and contributors suggest . Rose and oud is a well known combination , i like how Karl confirmed the originality of the composition.
-Ex Nihilo Paris Blue Talisman versatile up to date fragrance
-Amouage Jubilation 40 is slightly better than Jubilation XXV
-Matière Premiere Vanilla Powder i like because of the different approach to, not so sweet, but woody and powdery instead
-Electimuss London Vanilla Edesia every man needs a perfectly fitting tailor made suit suit , brown loafers and a fragrance like Vanilla Edesia. I like the colors of the bottle, the non sugarike gourmand vanilla , the sense of refinery is tickling my fancy even more.
-Cherigan Paris Fiesta Habana is connected to jazz clubs, and parties in Cuba with Cuban cigars, rum and joyous celebrations
    – Plume Impression, Royal Bourbon is a boozy tale of a different era
-By Killian Smoking Hot Christmas is either hookah or a boozy cake , or both
-Scentologia Syn.ergy I like because of its vacation time tropical feel, with juicy fruits , saffron and the musky amber accord Karl told us about.
-Thameen London Bravi is floral gourmand
-Xerjoff Empiryan is top tobacco, spices and vanilla
-Electimuss London Gladiator Oud is fierceness of the oud and patchouli
Gallagher Fragrances Purple Powder how exactly a fragrance smells purple?
    – Aaron Terence Hughes Unicorn Elixir is something I’ll sample
Vanilla Edesia will give me a perfect balance between modern, formal and casual , winning a bottle would be great
Thank you Karl Topham, Michael Devine, Electimuss London, Gallagher Fragrances
    USA

  • Both top ten lists sound amazing as usual. Solstice Scents Upstairs Window sounds incredible.

I can’t help but think that this really was the year of Vanilla! So fittingly, please enter me for the draw for Electimus Vanilla Edesia. I live in the US.

  • Vanilla Edisa sounds like something serious. Electimus is a high end brand that unfortunately I haven’t had the pleasure of experiencing. Would love to be gifted this for that purpose. With these several part series there’s lots coming at you and it can be hard to remember and be so selective. Thanks for the opportunity, from Jacksonville, NC.

  • Rauque just keeps coming up over and over. May be a sign but I know there’s alot going on aside from the unique bottle design. It’s peaked my interest I only want to know about performance as well. I hope to be gifted anything to try something new and maybe fall in love. From Jacksonville, NC.

  • Id like to win Vannila Edesia. Artisan Perfumes have such a variety im so intrested in digging deeper. I think theres room on the market for every unusal Scent out there and thats beautoful. Im from eu

  • This has certainty been a good year for perfume, loads of big brands releasing fragranc . Some of them I now have on my list to test out such as Jubilation 40, Vanilla Edesia, and some Aaron Terence Hughes stuff. I appreciate that they each showcase a different note, so they can suit various preferences. This is the first year that I have been paying close attention to CeFleurBon and I admire the variety of each contributor’s selections. I would love to win Vanilla Edesia, from NYC USA.

  • Thank you Michael and Karl for your compilation of your favorite fragrances in 2023.
In my eyes, Jubilation 40 is an absolutely worthy flanker to the original. I’ve tested it and found the fragrance notes are very similar to the original. Everything is so harmonious and finely interwoven, nothing stands out directly.
A wonderfully complex, fruity-sweet, woody-honeyed veil paired with incense, resins, musk, rose and cinnamon.

I would love to win Electimuss Vanilla Edesia and I’m from the EU.

  • Karl’s favorites include so many of mine from this year, as well! I love the variety of houses and scent profiles that both Michael and Karl chose, and especially enjoy the spotlight on sustainability . I would love to win Purple Powder, and I am in the US. Thank you!

  • “My olfactive exploration of 2023 ushered in a deeper understanding of the big picture of the industry, I experienced the vastness of the ever-growing commercial realm and dustings of artisanal offerings.”
    +
“This year also saw the rise of aesthetics over substance as brands strived for the most outrageous, ultra-lux or crazy presentation purely to catch the eye.”

Perfectly said !!! Especially with the ultra luxury presentations, it’s fragrances we’re taking about and not some diamonds and necklaces we’re keeping in
As usual I’ll share my thoughts on the fragrances I know, or want to try and compare them with what Karl and Michael are getting.
Ormonde Jayne Arabesque is high end overload of saffron and other spices, jammy rose, clean jasmine and oud.
Ex Nihilo Paris Blue Talisman composed by Jordi Fernandez is trendy pear and ambroxan
Amouage Jubilation 40 composed by … not sure who , I mean at first the fragrance was officially announced by Amouage as Renault Salmon made , then they changed it to co-created by Renault Salmon and Bertrand Duchaufour, and now Renault Salmon was removed from the creators list , and only Bertrand Duchaufour is listed as sole creator?!?
Jubilation 40 opening is very different from its predecessor, to me it’s very herbal , medicinal and healthy on the bay leaf. When it settles down the magic happens
Matière Premiere Vanilla Powder, composed by Aurélien Guichard
I’m a big time fan of Aurelien Guichard, Matiere Premiere , and the idea of focusing on one primary ingredient. To me the fragrance smells like a love child of Encens Suave and Santal Austral with pleasing coconut in the background.
I’m surprised Karl, just like Michelyn never mentioned incense, it’s well detectable on my skin , ambroxan too.
Electimuss London Vanilla Edesia composed by Cecile Zarokian is both alluring and captivating, in my opinion in a more grown up way . Deep and complex foundation with a bit of cumin, and personally I get a bit of leather.
    Cherigan Paris Fiesta Habana
With the classy tobacco , rum , woody nuances, and resins i believe Fiesta Habana is modern interpretation of a bygone, lavish era . Marijuana i a hidden note i can smell too , thankfully it’s just lurking in the background not overpowering other notes.
Plume Impression, Royal Bourbon, composed by Amandine Galliano heavy on the liquorice, boozy sweetness, tobacco and spices fragrance
By Kilian Smoking Hot Christmas, composed by Mathieu Nardin to me smells like love child of Angel Share and Apple Brandy
Scentologia Syn.ergy composed by Pierre Constantine Guéros ,a genius imo , and a future superstar perfumer. Definitely a gem , modern, tropical and fun.
Thameen London Bravi , composed by Bruno Jovanovic is creamy floral with honey, and cozy milky accords.
Xerjoff Empiryan isn’t sending the fragrance community to a frenzy because the Kemi Blue line is not available worldwide, and you can’t find it in most boutiques selling Xerjoff. In my opinion even though ~50% more expensive than Naxos it’s a way better fragrance , a stunner indeed.
Electimuss London Gladiator Oud composed by Julien Rasquinet is a heady fragrance going into animalic territory.
Roja Dove Taif Oud is a classy rose
Aaron Terence Hughes Unicorn Elixir is a gem I need to know soon
Cecile Zarokian Vanilla Edesia I’d like to win
All profiles I already follow, @waltherp99bg
    Thanks a lot

  • Great list Karl and Michael.
This tear was the year of vanilla. A fee if them have that note.

A fee on that those are in my short list to buy this year. Smoking hot, Jubilation 40, Vanilla Powder, just to name a few.
Purple Powder by Daniel Gallagher is also on the list, and I would be delighted if I win to get Purple Powder.

    From Massachusetts, happy new year.

  • This is such an interesting list!! I am so behind the new releases – none of the fragrances mentioned ring a bell. Time to get more samples.
I am in the I and would like to win either Purple Flowe or Vanilla Edesia, as both sound divine.

  • Timothy_knows_well says:

    Hello from UK
The oversaturated of volume , and too shiny presentations fragrance year from Karl Topham and look for serenity year for Michael Devine is consisted of
Ormonde Jayne Arabesque is a fragrance i’ll gladly wear , partially for the oud , partially for the rose ,partially for the spices , but most importantly for the sophisticated feel.
Ex Nihilo Paris Blue Talisman 10th Anniversary versatile fragrance
Amouage Jubilation 40 . Jubilation XXV is a timeless fragrance, and I’m eager to try Jubilation 40 . The honey tobacco, the different transitions compared to original, deep base of woods and the addition of blackcurrant are making me believe Jubilation 40 is a legitimate successor of Jubilation XXV.
Matière Premiere Vanilla Powder. Aurelien Guichard is a famous perfumer who made some really good fragrances like Gucci Intense Oud and This is Him from Zadig and Voltaire , his Matiere Premiere project i still need to try.Vanilla Powder is vanilla for those who don’t like gourmands, versatile, professional fragrance suited for multiple occasions , coconut i think will add some tropical flair to it.
Electimuss London Vanilla Edesia . Jovoy UK boutique in Mayfair is where i smelled Vanilla Edesia ,and I can say it’s special vanilla fragrance, definitely not dessert or candy like. Sweetness is there ,but it’s nowhere near gourmand. I can detect almonds and black tea.
Plume Impression, Royal Bourbon . I need to know more about Plume Impression
By Kilian Smoking Hot Christmas . Good fragrances with bad performance
Scentologia Syn.ergy One of the best tropical fragrances of the year ?
Xerjoff Empiryan . I was not aware of Empiryan, big fan of Naxos
Aaron Terence Hughes Unicorn Elixir Obviously fragrance that was able to touch Michael Devine
Count me in for the intricate and opulent Electimuss London Vanilla Edesia
    Thank you kindly

  • Another fantastic top 10 list! A lot more familiar/ more mainstream fragrances this time around and well deservingly so by Amouage, Xerjoff, Killian, and others. Creed always seems to be controversial in the claim of being the best and reformulations but I’m glad to see Absolu Aventus on the top 10. Will definitely be looking to sample the fragrances on Karl and Michael’s list as I still haven’t smelt a great deal of them. If I were to win I’d love to smell Electimuss London Vanilla Edesia, but would be delighted to be able to try either.
    In the US.

  • I think Both lists are amazing. It is difficult to give an opinión but if I would need to choose 3 perfumes from any list I think I would choose vanilla edesia, Vanilla powder and byzantine amber from Karl’s list and absolu Aventus, Purple powder and unicorn elixir from Michael’s list.

I am writing from Spain and would like to win vanilla edesia by Electimuss London

  • Regis Monkton says:

Gallagher Fragrances Purple Powder seems very enticing to me because of how it’s described, its list notes, and because I’ve never tried anything yet from Gallagher Fragrances. I live in the U.S.A. Michael’s description Rogue Perfumery Targhee Forest caused me to have a better understanding of what it smells like. I’m very intrigued to try that one. Also, Karl’s description of Thameen London Bravi and Le Labo Myrrhe 55 furthered my interest in trying those fragrances and the collected works of Thameen London.

  • wallygator88 says:

Really glad to see the small artisan houses and especially Targhee forest on this list.

I would love to win Purple Powder.

    Cheers from WI, USA

  • If I have to summarize for the third time today the amount of pleasing to the eyes, and mind fragrance information I’ll start with the cake comparison Karl Topham made , he’s on point.
Ormonde Jayne Arabesque ,comfortable high quality fragrances I adore , cold weather timelessness is what I’m thinking right now
Ex Nihilo Paris Blue Talisman easy to wear clean fragrance with pear
Amouage Jubilation 40 fruity resinous sweetness, tobacco and classic feel
Matière Premiere Vanilla Powder, composed by Aurélien Guichard. I was gifted a mini , 8ml of Neroli Oranger. Vanilla Powder is way more complex, I like such sophisticated fragrances with a lot of depth. The premium vanilla , palo santo and coconut, the blend sounds magical.
Electimuss London Vanilla Edesia . The only Electimuss London fragrance I’ve smelled is Amber Aquilaria, it smells fantastic.
Vanilla and Cécile Zarokian is a match made in Heaven, Cafe Cabanel, Ani , Material , and the latest beauty Vanilla Edesia .What appeals to me in all Karl Topham Electimuss London review is how genuinely amazed he is by all of their fragrances , and Vanilla Edesia in particular , it’s not just a reviews he had to do.
Cherigan Paris Fiesta Habana .Such a surprise, I was so not expecting to see there’s a fragrance inspired by the nightlife of Cuba around 100 years ago.
Plume Impression, Royal Bourbon lavish boozy fragrance
Thameen London Bravi Bravi feels so upscale , and refined
Xerjoff Empiryan underrated sexy tobacco fragrance according to Michael
Roja Dove Taif Oud spicy rose ,oud and quality ingredients
Aaron Terence Hughes Unicorn Elixir real deal fruity leather with oud
If lucky I’d like to win Electimuss London Vanilla Edesia
    Thanks for the draw

  • Your thoughtful selections not only offer a delightful exploration of scents but also showcase a shared passion for the beautiful and diverse world of perfumery. Cheers to the joy you’ve brought me through your carefully crafted lists.
I would love to win Vanilla Edesia. Hugs from Romania

  • Arabesque has gotten my attention here. Fortunately my local shop carries that. Fiesta Cabana has also gotten my attention, I visit Miami frequently which is as close as one can get to Cuba in the US. I have not found a LeLabo that I enjoy, but I may try again for this #55, I believe I still have to wait for the city collection to be available in stores next fall. My plan this weekend is to go to my local shop and test the Meo Fusciuno collection. Michael has inspired me to look beyond Violi Nere. Thanks for the chance. USA.

Karl, While I was in attendance at ScentXplore I had the opportunity to get my nose on Amouage Jubilation 40 and it was a “love at first sniff”. Another fragrance on your list that has caught my attention is Electimuss Vanilla Edesia…a beautifully complex vanilla creation. Both are definitely in my personal top 10 this year.
Michael, Another favorite that I acquired this year is For The Scent of It, Grand Soleil. Michael Schrammel continues to wow me with his creations….Wasteland Warrior is another from this house that I find so alluring. I look forward to experiencing each fragrance you have listed in your top 10.
Should I be picked for the giveaway, my choice is Electimuss London Vanilla Edesia or Gallagher Purple Powder. Both sound so wonderful 🙂

  • Love seeing OJ is still producing quality fragrances. Vanilla Powder seems to be making it on alot of list this year. Trying to find a sample is hard and sold out at places.
I have yet to try anything from Soltice scents but seeing it listed here is high praise.
I live in the US and would love the Purple Powder

  • Thank you to both Karl and Michael for these top picks! Wow, a sumptuous and sensual line up from both. I have been hearing a lot lately about Purple Powder, and enjoyed Michael’s take on it as exhibiting a duality that the color itself reflects – “regal and approachable, calm and vibrant ” – I never considered this association, but now I REALLY want to experience it! And thank you, Karl, for sifting through the vanilla-heavy releases to recommend a few gems. Shanghai 1930 caught my attention the most from your list, but Vanilla Edesia sounds like the most unexpected journey of them all. Thank you for this generous draw – I would be absolutely thrilled to experience EITHER of them, but if forced to choose, Purple Powder would probably be worn the most often. I live in NH, USA.

  • whimsical diva says:

I’ve read all 8 best of year lists, and I think Purple Powder has to be the fragrance that has showed up on multiple of these lists. I haven’t tried anything from this like as I don’t think any of the local NorCal indie perfume stores carry this line, but would love to enter the draw. I live in the US.

  • wandering_nose says:

It was so amazing to see some of the exquisite new releases of 2023 featuring on Karl’s and Michael’s top ten lists. I would love to have the opportunity to smell Purple Powder as the favorite of some of the CaFleureBon team one day. I have grown to appreciate Aaron Terence Hughes as a perfume critic and have been curious to get to know his own bold creations. love Michael’s honest words about ATH’s Unicorn Extract. I find myself strongly drawn to Vanilla Powder and Byzantine Amber, delighted to see them on the top ten lists. I am in the EU and I would love to experience the combination of frankincense, heliotrope and rose as it sounds heart melting. Thank you!!!

  • I love reading these lists, even when I find I don’t like the same fragrances as the reviewers. It’s so nice to hear reasons why people like or dislike a scent and it adds a yardstick with which to measure my own fragrance sampling journey. .And I get to agree or disagree without offending anyone! I live in the US and would choose Purple Powder if I am chosen to win.

  • “Much like the baking of a cake where the sponge foundations are laid by the big players whilst the icing is delicately added by independent perfumers.”

VERY , VERY special thanks to Karl Topham for the culinary reference, being a classically trained in Paris Pastry Chef it genuinely warmed my heart ❤. Same thing unfortunately happens in a lot of bakeries.
    ☆ Ormonde Jayne Arabesque
Being in Morocco, making Saffron and Resins Pound Cake with real Rose Water, and eating it while walking through a local spice market.
☆ Ex Nihilo Paris Blue Talisman
    Pear tarts and ambroxan
    ☆ Amouage Jubilation 40
Original Jubilation XXV is just great. Smells a bit like a mix between BlackBerry crumble traybake and BlackBerry Swirl Muffins with honey butter both with cinnamon. Can’t say animalic but some smells like bay leaf to me in Jubilation 40.
    ☆ Matière Premiere Vanilla Powder
I do praise Aurélien Guichard desire to showcase traditional , natural ingredients of the highest quality. Grade A , also known as Gourmet Vanilla he used i presume. At least how we Pastry Chefs call it.
Vanilla Powder makes me think of a tropical island trip , making Moist Vanilla and Coconut Cake, and enjoying my time. 100% addictive
    ☆ Electimuss London Vanilla Edesia
Cécile Zarokian made a very special vanilla with Electimuss London Vanilla Edesia , the fragrance is quite complex going into multiple directions, from fresh , sweet, to smoky, fruity, boozy , leathery and even just a bit animalic . If I have to guess Cécile Zarokian used Vanilla Pompona some call Mexican Vanilla. Some Pastry Chefs rarely cook with it , because of its distinctive smoky, cherry and cinnamon nuances. To me Vanilla Edesia makes me think of making Chocolate Ganache Cake, and later on eating it while sitting on a leather couch with burning incense cons next to me. The whole thing is I how I think Vanilla Edesia smells , Karl is in the same page.
    ☆ Cherigan Paris Fiesta Habana
Being in Cuba , making the traditional for the region Caribbean Rum Cake.
☆ Plume Impression, Royal Bourbon and By Kilian Smoking Hot Christmas I’ll sample as soon as possible
    ☆ Scentologia Syn.ergy
Powerful fragrance, smells like Crème de Cassis Saffron Cake with pineapple layered on top.
    ☆ Thameen London Bravi
I imagined making Ginger and Walnut Cake
☆ Xerjoff Empiryan I’m on Naxos hype train so…
    ☆ Roja Dove Taif Oud
Michael Devine take on Taif Aoud made me think of my days living in Paris.
☆ Aaron Terence Hughes Unicorn Elixir … moved you to tears?
I’ll be happy to win Electimuss London Vanilla Edesia
Appreciate the hard work, VERY much the culinary reference Karl made, reading about your best , and the giveaway campaign

  • Another great top ten.

Karl made some interesting observations in his introduction, though I think they’re more true for niche and house releases than micro artisan perfumers, where you get substance over style. 27 87 Per Se’s “cloudlike structure” is intriguing, Matiere Premiere Vanilla Powder sounds like a best-in-class vanilla, and Cherigan Paris Fiesta Habana sounds like a blast for winter parties and nights out. Also, I keep seeing mention of Francesca Bianchi Byzantine Amber, which I’d love to try soon.

I agree with Michael—perfume is a fine solace for trying times, or at least a way to experience a new setting from afar. We certainly don’t need more Aventus dupes, but I’m intrigued by Absolu’s “octave down,” Xerjoff Empiryan sounds like an equally dark tobacco stunner, and while I don’t know what to make of Gallagher Fragrances Purple Powder, I’m more interested in trying it each time I read about it. Targhee Forest is one of the few Rogue Perfumery fragrances I haven’t tried and I’m always on the hunt for a new spin on coniferous scents. Also, what a great writeup about Solstice Scents Upstairs Window! Finally, I’ll need to eventually try Meo Fusciuni Parfums, since they’re getting a lot of attention in these best of lists.

I’m in the USA. I’d love to win the Gallagher Fragrances Purple Powder. Thanks!

  • To my forever shame, I must admit that I did not get to try anything that was listed in this article, Part 5. I think I must have been very lazy this year. I know many of them had reviews on the blog and a lot of them caught my attention… but one way or another, I could not get to try them.

I would love to win Vanilla Edesia. I really enjoy vanilla and I feel like this fragrance from Electimuss London is a good, versatile creation, that can satisfy my vanilla crave.

    Europe. Thanks!

  • I enjoyed reading about Karl’s and Michael’s top ten fragrances of 2023. I have not tested any of Karl’s picks, but I have wanted to get my hands on most of them. Astrophil & Stella Shanghai 1930 sounds beautiful with its notes of tuberose, plum, and vanilla. I really enjoy the original Jubilation XXV, so I do not doubt that I would like Jubilation 40. I do love a good vanilla, so I have been very interested in Vanilla Powder and Vanilla Edesia. I love that palo santo is included in Vanilla Powder, and the frankincense in Vanilla Edesia sounds great. I love how Karl mentioned that By Kilian Smoke Hot is reminiscent of Christmas Cake; that makes me want to test it! I loved reading about all of Karl’s picks and was happy to see Francesca Bianchi in his honorable mentions.

Like Michael, I also enjoy fragrance for the escape it can provide. I am delighted to see he included Upstairs Window by Solstice Scents. Solstice Scents is one of my favorite houses; I love the atmospheric and realistic fragrances that Angela creates. I have only tried a few from Meo Fusciuni, so I appreciate that Michael included them as his best discovery. I really need to test more from the house.

Thank you, Karl and Michael, for your top ten lists for 2023. Thank you to Electimuss London and Gallagher Fragrances for the generous giveaways. I would love to be considered for either fragrance. I have tried Purple Powder and enjoy it, but Vanilla Edesia also sounds amazing. I am located in the USA.

  • All in all the two adepts Karl Topham and Ermano Picco are found of the new fragrances they discovered in 2023 , although Karl believes there’s way too much ambers , and maybe too much…dusting off artisanal offerings wow .
Out of all the best of choices they made i have smelled By Kilian Smoking Hot, Creed Absolu Aventus and Guerlain Habit Rouge Privé .
I’m curious about, on Karl side
Ex Nihilo Paris Blue Talisman due to versatility and pear
Amouage Jubilation 40 due to blackberry and blackcurrant, incense and honeyed tobacco
Matière Premiere Vanilla Powder, due to its explosionof goodness. Such naturally smelling vanilla fragrances are not easy to find.
Electimuss London Vanilla Edesia It has been a pleasure learning about Electimuss London Vanilla Edesia from Karl Topham.
I’m a fan of beautiful things, complex vanilla and as a whole stunning creations
Plume Impression, Royal Bourbon due to its intoxicating elegance
By Kilian Smoking Hot Christmas more apple hookah than Christmas cake imo
Scentologia Syn.ergy due to lush fruits , saffron and performance
    On Michael side
Xerjoff Empiryan due to its exclusivity
Electimuss London Gladiator Oud due to the fierceness of the oud in it
Aaron Terence Hughes Unicorn Elixir due to being attar , 35% rose absolute, leather and vanilla
The pushing the boundaries Vanilla Edesia I’d enjoy the most
    Much obliged

There are so many interesting fragrances on Karl’s and Michael’s lists. It was wonderful to see something from Solstice Scents on Michael’s list. I have tried many from this house and I am always happy when there is a new release. I definitely want to try Fiesta Habana form Cherigan Paris. The notes sound dark and sensual.
I would select Purple Powder if I were the winner of the giveaway.
    I live in the USA.

  • I too love Targhee Forest by Rogue and am actually wearing it right now. It reminds me of a classic fougere while mixing it up with pine and other elements. Several of the other fragrances, such as Smoking Hot, I was able to sample this year. That one in particular was warm and welcoming during the colder days of fall. I will gave to revisit it this winter. I would like to win Gallagher Purple Powder if chosen. I live in CT, US.

  • I’m always amazed by our reviewers’ abilities to keep track of all the scents they sample, and the notes, and all of that. I love reading all the reviews and how the scent transports the wearer. There are so many lovely perfumes I would love to try and wear, and then those that do not sound like one I would want to wear. Per se, Grand Soleil, Vanilla Powder sound lovely (I’m getting dizzy scrolling back and forth on my phone screen). I love finding out about new perfumes and houses. All of these perfumes seem really interesting. I would be interested in Vanilla Edesia, a vanilla that doesn’t sound too sweet. I’m in the us

  • Both Karl Topham and Michael Devine made some really good points, Karl with a lot of fragrances smelling the same in the sponge foundations are the same , made by the big players , and Michael with the fact that it’s becoming harder to find a source of serenity and escape.
    Ormonde Jayne Arabesque
If done well I’ll never get tired of rose and oud fragrances , Arabesque sounds stylish and exclusive.
Ex Nihilo Paris Blue Talisman (Jordi Fernandez) extremely modern
    Amouage Jubilation 40 (Bertrand Duchaufour)
One of the biggest transitions? Jubilation XXV is pretty much linear fragrance, I wonder how different Jubilation 40 is.
Matière Premiere Vanilla Powder (Aurelien Guichard):
I’m glad Vanilla Powder in not a linear fragrance , the whole metamorphosis from highest quality vanilla from Madagascar , to comforting palo santo and woods is what intrigues me the most.
Electimuss London Vanilla Edesia (Cecile Zarokian)
In August I ordered Electimuss London , at the time current sample set, and I’m impressed , true lavishness for the senses. So many beautiful fragrances , gourmands , aromatics, shypres … all smelling luxury, long lasting, and rather unique. at the time of my purchase Vanilla Edesia was not yet on the market.
Spicy sweet leather, rose and a spicy edge, and made by Cécile Zarokian? I can tell Electimuss London commitment to artistry and innovation continues with Vanilla Edesia.
Plume Impression, Royal Bourbon (Amandine Galliano) I’m liking the licorice addition to rum , tobacco and caramel
By Kilian Smoking Hot Christmas (Mathieu Nardin) Kilian do know how to make a good boozy fragrances
Scentologia Syn.ergy ( Pierre Constantin Guerros)
All the pulpy fruits, the rose , musk and saffron I’m drawn to.
    Karl Topham
    XX
Xerjoff Empiryan sexy tobacco concoction with incense
Electimuss London Gladiator Oud (Julien Rasquinet) rugged composition
Gallagher Fragrances Purple Powder (Daniel Gallagher):
I no longer live in US , and Gallagher Fragrances are harder to find in Germany, talanted perfumer and one complex fragrance
Aaron Terence Hughes Unicorn Elixir (Aaron Terence Hughes) real deal Unicorn Elixir
    Michael Devine
Electimuss London Vanilla Edesia is my choice
    Thank to all involved
    Germany

  • Happy New Year
I’m picky about fragrances I’m wearing, and i have to say I’m impressed by Karl Topham and Michael Devine choices , quite a lot I’ll gladly wear myself.
If you know Amouage, you should know Jubilation XXV period. Of higher rank resinous fragrance with incense, fruits and grade of mysteriousness .It is a good thing Raynaud Salmon wanted to pay homage to the original, and didn’t change Jubilation 40 way too much. The transition is there , the blackberries, smoke too yet he added blackcurrant, honeyed tobacco and even the mysteriousness is elevated.
High concentration of resins, Madagascar vanilla, palo santo and coconut, Matière Premiere Vanilla Powder is really nice
Electimuss London Vanilla Edesia . Cecile Zarokian is the author of a few fragrances I love Ani Nishane, Royal Tobacco Amouage , Private Label Jovoy . Electimuss London fragrances are praised by many people online, not just Karl . I like doubling down on sustainability approach by the brand, beautiful bottles and quality of the fragrances. Vanilla Edesia is attractive because how complex it is , with Madagascar vanilla, rose , heliotrope and classy approach
Xerjoff Empiryan Tobacco is one of my favorite notes , grandpa is into tobacco harvesting business I’ll find a way to try it.
Electimuss London Gladiator Oud clash of swords and harmony
Aaron Terence Hughes Unicorn Elixir every single Aaron Terence Hughes fragrance I’ve tried i like a lot
    Vanilla Edesia is my choice
    Thanks a bunch

  • With a whisky-infused confidence I declare these certainties: 1) Karl Topham and Michael Devine are my fellow whiskey connoisseurs 2) Both love boozy fragrances in general 3) I drank a bit too much already 😉
Trying to play some shenanigans with Michael Devine, and what he said a few months back, cheers everyone
Lack of originality, and dustings off artisanal offerings are both common, I’m with Karl on the matter.
Ormonde Jayne Arabesque classic rose and oud fragrance , with cassis and moss
Amouage Jubilation 40 at least the opening smells like a different fragrance to me compared to Jubilation XXV but I smelled it briefly on a blotter only so ..
    Matière Premiere Vanilla Powder
Encens Suave I’ve smelled , high end gourmand with leather. What I find interesting in Vanilla Powder is the natural vanilla , palo santo, and as a whole the different approach to vanilla , fresher, with ambroxan , coconut and it is more versatile , compared to Encens Suave.
Electimuss London Vanilla Edesia Cécile Zarokian signed so many masterpieces , and future ones are on the horizon.I had the pleasure of smelling Vanilla Edesia and Karl Topham is on point, fragrance is sophisticated with a few interesting ideas and twists. I like how the vanilla is not ultra sweet and animalic, but more comfortable and cumin is on the spicy, rather than BO side.
Cherigan Paris Fiesta Habana Karl Topham took us to a journey to 1920s, and the way people were having the times of their life.
Scentologia Syn.ergy Hawaii, Royal Hawaiian Hotel and Waikiki Beach landmark came to mind
Xerjoff Empiryan is a sexy and very spicy tobacco
Roja Dove Taif Oud is top notch elegant floral amber i don’t know, but I’m eager to try
I’d love to win Electimuss London Vanilla Edesia
Thank you for the hard work , and the opportunity

  • Utmost respect for people who have high standards , and want to smell good yet unique.
Reading Karl Topham and Michael Devine mini reviews makes me want to smell almost all , and 3 asap
Matière Premiere Vanilla Powder Novelty vanilla, overdose of raw materials ethically sourced by local farmers, rich and woody.
    Xerjoff Empiryan underrated sexy fragrance
Cécile Zarokian did splendid work once again.
Sustainable ingredients stepping on foundation of depth and complexity, Vanilla Edesia is elaborate fragrance i’d really like to win
    Thank you kindly, from EU

  • PetaloDiCera says:

These 2023 selections are a good way to sum up an intense year and discover something special you eventually missed.
So thank you Karl and Michael for this variegated list with some gem I love (Byzantin amber, Meo Fusciuni parfums, Shangai 1930..) and some more I’m intriguide by!
I would love to receive Vanilla Edesia by Electimuss and make this fragrance one of the best of my 2024.
    Smiles from Italy, EU.

  • Karl Topham may very well be right about the cake parallel, there’s a certain level of redundancy i noticed too in 2023 , the base in a lot of fragrances are quite similar.
Astrophil & Stella Shanghai 1930 heady florals and juicy fruits
Ormonde Jayne Arabesque i’ll try , the bottle is awesome, but I wonder what I’ll get from it, quality joyous and spicy rose and oud fragrance , with remnants of a spice market in a Middle Eastern country
Amouage Jubilation 40 I like the smokiness, the patchouli, the oud, fruits the honey sweetness, and everything else in its sophisticated character.
Matière Premiere Vanilla Powder i enjoy wearing woody vanilla fragrances all year round, Vanilla Powder is perfect the Fall and Winter.Honestly I’m not sure I’ll be able to tell the difference between the all natural Madagascar Vanilla Absolute, and natural Palo Santo Aurelien Guichard used in Vanilla Powder , and some synthetic substitute . What I personally like in the fragrance is the grow up , yet modern profile , and the fact there’s a little bit of coconut and dry palo santo.
    Electimuss London Vanilla Edesia
Vanilla Edesia by Electimuss London i think is modern, multifaceted fragrance with a high compliment factor. All nuances Karl Topham told us about i find attractive, the spices , the leather, and well dosed animalic alter ego.Good performance, and complint factor are always welcomed , Cécile Zarokian known well how to make it happen
    Scentologia Syn.ergy
I like the balance in Syn.ergy, the fragrance is tasty yet spicy , fruity sweet, yet floral
Thameen London Bravi falls into the elegant spicy and sweet floral category, and walnut milk accord is making it more suave .
Xerjoff Empiryan sexy tobacco, the second car in the Naxos hype train
Electimuss London Gladiator Oud for gladiators
Roja Dove Taif Oud The the best Taif rose available , cassis , spices , all smoothen with vanilla and resins. Sounds really, really good, and I also think , it would be more upscale occasions fragrance.
I’d prefer Electimuss London Vanilla Edesia
    Exciting giveaway, USA
    Regards
