Walking through Stendal market square towards NIKA Secret Avenue Parfümerie on a crisp, late afternoon in November was a charming experience. Located approximately 1 hour from Berlin by train, Stendal city (Saxony-Anhalt State) with its great Renaissance gables and impressive spiers of the St. Marien Council Church has both a great history and a picturesque environment, which is intimate and peaceful – a far cry from the hustle and bustle one might expect. NIKA Secret Avenue Parfümerie is situated just off the square in the tranquil Breite Strasse; with its clean lines and columns it has a regal feeling and is the perfect location for perfume enthusiasts.

Veronika Hamdusch of NIKA Secret Avenue Parfumerie

Owner Veronika Hamdusch by Karl.

The owner Veronika (Nika) Hamdusch made the brave decision to open her boutique during the midst of the pandemic and NIKA Secret Avenue Parfümerie has proved a great success and is celebrating its first anniversary this month! I attribute this to her congenial and relaxed approach, expert understanding of both artistic and commercial fragrances and a firm dedication to bring haute perfumery to her city, her boutique being the only store in Stendal dedicated solely to artistic perfumery. On entering NIKA Secret Avenue Parfümerie one is given a warm welcome where customers can explore the glitz and glamour of chandeliers and glam interior where precious perfume flacons are presented in sheer white cabinets trimmed with gold atop onyx drawers. The perfumery feels super lux and modern and reflects its founder.

Ms. Hamdusch and I have been friends for three years and I was delighted to be invited to visit her. We share a deep love of Sous Le Manteau Perfumes specifically Vapeurs Diablotines and bonded over its mesmeric effect and unique presentation. As if it was meant to be, the Sous Le Manteau collection is now a part of the portfolio of NIKA Secret Avenue Parfümerie. Ms. Hamdusch is a true lover of perfume brands aesthetic, and this is demonstrated beautifully at her perfumery. Amongst her most prized lines are Parfums M.Micallef with their custom hand painted bottles, which are works of fine art. Notes Vanilllee is one such gem that Michelyn Camen, Editor in Chief at  has been wearing since 2010 (they temporarily discontinued it, she and many others begged for its return et voila). Rebellious Italian brand Coreterno appears with both their decadent perfumes and candles and Turkish brand Nishane has been brought in and has been well received by her clientele.

Astrophil & Stella collection courtesy of Veronika Hamdusch.

What most impressed me about NIKA Secret Avenue Parfümerie and of critical importance to any fragrance aficionado is the variety of perfumes and brands available. Rarely does one find a destination with Jean Poivre’s Night of Rain and Stars rubbing flacons with Astrophil & Stella’s Nabati. From the ultra-niche to high end luxury offerings such as Parfums De Marly’s latest creation Haltane, there is something for the most demanding palates. Ms. Hamdusch certainly has her finger on the pulse of up-and-coming companies launching compelling new scents, there are collections from Memoize London, Gritti Fragrances and the established brands we know and love… Casamoratti (Xerjoff) and Trussardi to name but few.

Coreterno perfumes

Olfactive Studio and Coreterno at NIKA Secret Avenue by Karl.

Ms. Hamdusch’s recommendation for me was Olfactive Studio’s Chypre Shot from the Sepia Collection by Master Perfumer Bertrand Duchaufour.  It is a classic perfume with some brilliant twists, sweet and decadent amber combined with a semi gourmand feel via coffee, black tea and cardamom it is absolutely divine and highly underrated. Another great discovery was M.Micallef EdenFalls, an aromatic citrus come aquatic scent with milky and musky touches. Incredibly elegant and refreshing it has a slight chypre vibe with oakmoss and patchouli in the base.

Possibly one of the most memorable aspects from my time spent at NIKA Secret Avenue Parfümerie was Ms Hamdusch’s proficiency in matching perfumes to her clientele. This was done with a casual elegance but with incisive insights into customers’ personalities and presentation. Visitors are welcomed to spritz and imbibe scents and return to them over time after chats over coffee or even champagne. This relaxed approach has ensured a faithful and happy community. I am sure that this is only the beginning for NIKA Secret Avenue Parfümerie and congratulate Ms Hamdusch on taking the leap into showcasing haute perfumery.

  • It’s always so excited when I was an international perfume store has some italian brand such as trussardi, gritti or coreterno. I really like the selection, good job! Greetings from Italy

  • How unique intriguing and fascinating the tour is appeals to me. I live in Trzebnica, Poland, EU. I think that M.Micallef is my favorite brand out of the mentioned ones because it’s pretty familiar to me.

  • I so wish I was close enough to visit this amazing emporium! It sounds like heaven. I was also unaware of the Sous le Manteu Vapeurs Diablotines, and one of my new beloved favorites is their Cuir d’Orient, so Vapeurs Diablotines is now on my Must Try list too. I live in the US.

  • It was, indeed, both risky and brave to open NIKA during the pandemic and it seems the gamble paid off. The business, indeed, prospers when the owner understands perfumes and can make successful recommendations to individual clients. Thanks for the draw. I am in US.

  • NIKA Secret Avenue Parfümerie sound like really magical place. The way Karl described it reminds me of Ollivander’s wand shop from Harry Potter specially if the lovely owner of the perfumery can match perfumes to her clients. It so happens that my favorite brand from the ones mentioned in Karl’s article is indeed M. Micallef. I haven’t have opportunity to test all of their fragrances but EdenFalls is my beloved one for now. I own small bottle of this turquoise jewel but wouldn’t mine a backpack. I live in EU, Poland.

  • What a broad and different supply this store has. If I ever pass through Stendal I’ll definately pay it a visit. I’ve never heard of chypre shot, but oh my, it sounds delicious and I will definately sample it. Karl’s tour of this seemingly lovely location was interesting to say the least. My favourite brand featured here is without a doubt Memoize London. I am very sad to have missed the giveaway for Luxuria that you held a while back, because that is one in particular I’ve had my eyes on.

  • What a brave decision indeed to open up a shop in the middle of the raging pandemic. I’m very glad to see that it has panned out well for her. Karl’s tour was very interesting, and I learned of many new perfume houses, such as Gritti, Sous Le Manteau and Coreterno. I’ll never not appreciate gaining new knowledge so I am eternally grateful of learning of these. (No less to further fuel my fragrance addiction, haha) My favourite brand featured here I’d say is Casamoratti, nothing beats the quality present in Xerjoff and its offsprings.

I live in Sweden, EU 🙂

  • Thank you for taking us along on your tour of NIKA, the pictures were lovely and it really sounds like a haven for perfumistas. And congratulations Nika on your first anniversary! I was also impressed that one can drink coffee or champagne while trying fragrances. My favourite brand listed is Olfactive Studio. Writing from the EU.

  • Stendal seems to be such a lovely little town, I’d gladly make a detour from Berlin to visit it and the lovely store featured in this article. I’m glad Karl wrote this, because I doubt I’d learn of these any other way. I’d say my favourite brand featured is Nishane, even though it only was shortly mentioned. I like some push and bite in my fragrances, and Nishane’s truly encapsulates that with their extraordinary Extraits. Good luck everyone! And thank you Veronika Hamdusch for your generosity, and Cafleurebon for this giveaway.

  • I would love to visit the store. I have never been to Berlin/Stendal, but I now have one extra reason to plan a trip there as soon as possible. This experience of having a personal recommendation sounds interesting enough. I know what I like and what I look for in a perfume, but it would be quite surprising to have a one on one chat with Ms. Hamdusch and see what she would recommend. Thanks for the read and for the giveaway. I am in the EU

  • I really enjoyed how Karl described not only the placement and the logistics of NIKA Secret Avenue in Berlin, but also the brands it features and the overall vibe one can expect to find when walking in. It truly does sound like a lovely, personalized and laid back experience that can only double the joy of discovering new perfumes or snatching the ones one craves for. And well done to Ms. Hamdusch for the leap of faith she took by opening the shop during Covid and also for the lovely treatment she gives her customers!
My favorite brand mentioned in the article has to be Casamorati. They just have so many delightful scents. Followed closely by Maison Micallef, which also has a few fragrances I really love. EdenFalls, which is unknown to me though, also sounds and looks AMAZING!

    Thanks for the draw!

  • The appealing aspect of the tour was the description of the relaxed approach which made for a faithful and happy community. My favorite brand featured would be Parfums de Marly. US

Love the aesthetics of the perfumery, it’s classy but not over the top. Recently I’ve started visiting niche perfumeries in cities and countries I visit and buying myself perfumes as souvenirs. I’ve been to many niche perfumeries and most have quality and knowledgeable staff, but rarely have I met someone who can perfectly match me with fragrances or truly understand what I want. THerefore if I’m ever close by I’ll visit NIKA Secret Avenue Parfümerie. Unfortunately I haven’t tried any of the brands mentioned in this article, but would love to win EdenFalls. A beautiful description by Karl really need to try notes Vanilllee I am intrigued by M micallef a house that I have got bo experience with but I am intrigued by nonetheless. Thanks a million from the UK

I have not tried Notes Vanilllee really fascinated by the notes. A wonderful description by Karl has piqued my interest in this boutique. Thanks a lot from the United Kingdom

  • Stendal- I had to google it.
French novelist Marie-Henri Beyle may have taken his chief pseudonym, Stendhal, from the name of the city.

Loved to read that entrepreneurs such as Veronika Hamdusch are passionate about their business and can offer a space for olfactory dreaming in a small city such Stendal.

Most of the brands she has in the store are unknown to me, with the exception of Trussardi

  • Thanks for the article, I’m taking my first trip to Europe this summer and I’ll add this to my schedule. Beautiful shop!! Chypre Shot is an amazing pick, don’t know why it hasn’t had more attention. Don’t enter me in the draw, as I live in USA.

  • Thanks for hosting this giveaway! I’m actually going to Berlin by car this upcoming summer, and will gladly take a detour to Stendal, which by all accounts seem absolutely lovely. Thank you Karl, for enlightening us.

My favourite brand mentioned is probably Memoize London, which have put out some absolute bangers. Glad that you mentioned them, so that they’ll hopefully get more attention, which they highly deserve.

    Cheerishly writing from the EU.

  • I always enjoy hearing about stores like this. My dream profession, without a doubt. I’m glad this one in particular survived the pandemic, and applaud the bravery of opening during that hectic time. EdenFalls seems to be a very intersting fragrance, built on Oakmoss and Patchouli, but still being somewhat airy and fresh is a hard feat. I’d actually say M.Micallef is my favourite brand mentioned, because they dare to create their own things.

    I reside in EU.

  • This place seems so cool! Thank you Karl, for telling us about it. Sous Le Manteau is indeed a very nice brand, while Vapeurs Diablotines is an even nicer fragrance. I’d say Sous Le Manteau is my favourite brand of the ones you mentioned during this article. It flies very much under the radar, but maybe that is for the better. Thank you Veronika and Cafleurebon for this amazing oppurtunity! Bless you, and good luck everyone!

    I live in Sweden/EU.

  • It’s great to hear about small independent perfumeries that are ran with love and devotion. The personal angle on selection of fragrances and houses is what makes them interesting, I’m very happy to say that my city recently got a similar shop- my prized stop an chat and smell place that breaks my everyday routine. So precious!

  • I hope I will be able to visit the store one day. It’s always quality time and time well spent when you find yourself in the same room with someone passionate and knowledgeable about the wonderful world of perfumes.
Good luck to Ms. Hamdusch! & thanks for the draw! I am in Europe.

  • Omg, what a gorgeous shop! I’m jealous for all Stendal perfume aficionados, who get to make it a regular stop. I’ll be sure to save some time and visit it on my next trip to Berlin (hopefully soon!). NIKA has an impeccable curation, and I’m surprised to see gems such as Nisane and Sous le Manteau together under one roof. I too have a soft spot for SlM’s Vapeurs Diablotines ever since I bought the travel size a few years ago, but Cuir d’Orient remains my favorite of the house.
I’ve been meaning to try some of M.Micallef’s scents for some time so it would be amazing to try EdenFalls! I’m currently based in London but also have an EU address (if that makes sending packages a bit easier)

  • The store looks wonderful and it seems like a true experience! I only wish I was closer so I could come explore it. The M.Micallef bottle is a work of art. Looking at the notes, there’s always something very special about the lightness of citrus juxtaposed against the creaminess of musk and vanilla. The pink pepper and coriander…color me curious to smell! Thanks for the draw, I am in the US.

  • Trusardy my fave mentioned brand. I love how all the perfume look. Really unique! Im from eu

  • I love Veronika’s courage to open a business during Covid. She is definitely the right woman in the right place. The whole idea that NIKA Secret Avenue Parfümerie is built upon is awesome. A perfumery where luxury and cosiness meet together and where you can spritz and feel comfortable enough to explore the magic realm of niche perfumery, is a great place. Wish I could visit Veronika’s place one day.
And M.Micallef EdenFalls seems so intriguing and lovely, with citrus, aquatic, milky and musky facets.
    Hugs from Romania

Very nice article Karl! What appeals to me about Karl’s tour of NIKA Secret Avenue NIKA Secret Avenue Parfümerie is his description of how wide and vast the span of the selection is – with the highest end department store luxury side by side with the most unusual ultra-niche artisan offerings, with classics to novel brands. I have very eclectic and wide perfume tastes and I love a store that can cater to all aspects of me!

It’s brave and wonderful to open a physical boutique. It also takes a special person to be able to match a fragrance to a person. The space looks quite beautiful and I wish her all the best.

I’ve sampled Chypre Shot and it really is a wonderful fragrance to recommend.

Thank you for the wonderful draw.

    Cheers from WI, USA

  • The variety of perfumes available at NIKA Secret Avenue is impressive. Karl’s mention of the invitation to chat about the perfumes over coffee is very unique. My favourite brand featured in this article is M. Micallef. Based in the UK.

  • NIKA Secret Avenue Parfümerie looks like a beautiful space. The glossy blacks and brightly lit whites of the interiors really highlight the packaging and bottles on display. The list of brands is also impressive; I’m curious if NIKA Secret Avenue Parfümerie offers samples for such a varied stock list. Congrats on the anniversary and thanks to Karl for the coverage.

  • I like that you say a community has been formed and that there can be chats over coffee, sounds like a very friendly environment, not a typical shop that just sells products.
