Laurie Stern of Velvet & Sweet Pea’s Purrfumery

Laurie Stern of Velvet & Sweet Pea’s Purrfumery

Natural artisan perfumer Laurie Stern of Velvet & Sweet Pea’s Purrfumery is an absolute treasure amongst natural perfumers – unstinting in her employment of some of the loveliest materials you could possibly imagine. Her career background is as a wedding florist, and her husband Gary (a landscape artist) assures that her gardens are not only overflowing with scented plants and flowers, but also bees (Laurie uses her own beeswax as the base for her beautiful solid perfumes). Last year she was inspired to create a mouthwatering juicy floral solid perfume underpinned with woody notes – but she didn’t have a name for it! After mailing out samples and holding a contest, a dear mutual friend of ours – Jodi Battershell – came up with the current name, Beaumes de Cassis (from the Provençal word bauma, meaning grotto or cave – and cassis = currant). Intuitively, it couldn’t be more perfect: one of Laurie’s favorite dessert wines is Beaumes de Venise, which she insists is divine as an accompaniment to chocolate and a sunset. (Muscat de) Beaumes-de-Venise wines are sweet, fortified Muscat based wines from the village of the same name in France’s Rhône Valley, where they have been made since the 14th century.

Laurie Stern Velvet & Sweet Pea’s Purrfumery Beaumes de Cassis and Muscat wine

When Laurie refers to Beaumes de Cassis as “the ultimate fruity bon bon”, and “the essence of celebration – the clinking of glasses filled with sweet dessert wine and jasmine petals”, she is right on point. Immediately upon contact, a dazzlingly juicy blood orange appears – in the playful company of fresh berries and piquant, winey black currant bud absolute (cassis). Cassis is tart and tangy, a delightful material – and the luscious apricot-y nature of both osmanthus and boronia flesh out the fruit aspect of a dessert wine, while subtle leather undertones (osmanthus) mimic tannins and contribute sophistication. In order to ground and prolong our pleasure, Laurie utilizes the balsamic notes of benzoin; the jammy character of fir resin echoes fruit while it adds a charming sylvan facet which complements the entire composition. I wouldn’t be surprised if a kiss of elemi or frankincense were included; jasmine lends a gentle indolic floralcy which feels just right.

I dearly wish that Velvet & Sweet Pea’s Purrfumery was better known to the public. Despite a listing of notes which appear relatively modest, her perfumes are nothing if not complex – and Beaumes de Cassis is a beautiful example of this quality. I can also see why the solid fragrance format appeared appropriate: it glides over the skin obligingly, and the beeswax can’t help but augment a faintly animalic caress. There must be some form of trompe-nez at work here, because Beaumes de Cassis is much more than the sum of its parts. It’s a joy to don a fragrance which is both high-spirited and thoroughly sophisticated. Notes: blood orange, berries, black currant buds, jasmine, osmanthus, Tasmanian boronia, benzoin, resins, fir balsam

Sample kindly provided by the perfumer – many thanks!  My nose is my own…

Thanks, Ida, for another lovely introduction!
I have not specialised in the fruity category. Yet the tart cassis and leathery osmanthus intrigue me very much. The balsamic base and jasmine nuances sound even more delightful.
I have heard of the house for its cute name, but I have not yet tried their creations yet. Very look forwards to them!
    Love from San Mateo, California.

  • Thank you for the introduction to this brand! Beaumes de Cassis sounds lovely. I love that the base of this solid perfume is wax from her own bees. Charming!

Thanks, Ida for constantly making me want even more fragrance! Solid perfume is something I’ve been hearing a lot about lately, so I’m rather intrigued. Thanks a lot for the opportunity. From USA

  • i love the in depth and description of notes and experience and i too agree that laurie deserves more notoriety. in the past few months i purchased my first sample pack from her. i live locally, so was able to go and meet her and pick it up. i believe we chatted for almost an hour about perfumes and notes, etc. all the ones i sniffed that day were all gorgeous. i remember this one being really impressive and would love a bottle of my own. thank you for this!

Oh, my goodness, this sounds lovely!
Muscats are some of my favorite wines, not only for the flavor, but for the aroma, also.
I love the phrase, ‘the luscious apricot-y nature of both osmanthus and boronia’!
    Thank you for the giveaway.
    I live in the US.

I love the way Ida described the way the notes unfolded – tart cassis, leathery tannins simulated by osmanthus, jammy fir. The composition sounds delightful. Crossing my fingers in HI, USA.

I was immediately drawn in by the cat imagery — purrfumery is such a great name! I enjoyed Ida’s description of Beaumes de Cassis as high-spirited and thoroughly sophisticated. I have never tried solid perfume perfume, but am curious about it!

  • I am not familiar with solid perfumes, so this would be a new experience if I were to win this draw. From Ida’s review of Velvet & Sweet Pea’s Purrfumery Beaumes de Cassis, I learned that it is a complex perfume, despite only a small number of listed notes. It was also fun to learn about the perfumer and her husband and their dedication to quality. Thanks for the review and draw. From continental United States.

Thank you for the review Ida! Velvet and Sweet Pea Purrfumery seems like a labor of love for Laurie Stern and how lovely that a portion of the proceeds goes to supporting animals. I’ve always loved the concept of solid perfumes. The case for Beaumes de Cassis is so pretty. The reference to the dessert wine with the tart fruit and the apricoty osmanthus and boronia sounds delightful. MD, USA,

  • I have always been drawn to Velvet & Sweet Pea’s Purrfumery. The ingredients, the perfumer, and the entire aesthetic are very intriguing. I especially love Laurie Stern’s commitment to animal welfare. I enjoyed reading the inspiration behind the name of her new creation, Beaumes de Cassis. I’ve never tried Beaumes de Venise but it sounds quite delicious. All of the notes in Beaumes de Cassis sound so beautiful and perfectly blended. I love the combination of black currant with resins and flowers, so I’m particularly drawn to the additions of benzoin and fir balsam. I’m also glad to hear Ida mention that the solid perfume was the right choice for the fragrance; I imagine the beeswax does add a slight animalic touch that’s very beautiful. I also agree with Ida that Velvet & Sweet Pea’s Purrfumery should be much better known. I think there’s a group of fellow niche and indie lovers who are aware of her stunning creations, but they definitely deserve more attention. Thank you, Ida, for the great review, and thank you to Laurie Stern for the beautiful giveaway. I am located in the USA.

I tried in many different ways to register without success. I will comment anyway, because I love Laurie’s work. A few years ago, she welcomed me into her home and studio to let me smell her work and explain her process. I love the whimsy that she brings to everything l, including her perfumes. Thanks for reminding me it’s time to visit her again, especially since she lives only 10 minutes away!

Ida, your description of this scent makes my mouth water. Such juicy descriptive language!

  • I kinda love how “extra” the packaging is, haha. And as the proud mom of two cats who started off their lives on the street (one named Apricot, to boot!) I really admire that a portion of the perfume’s proceeds funds spay/neuter clinics.
Ida’s description of dessert wine, an animalic caress and jammy fir resin tell me all I need to know as far as how much I would love Beaumes de Cassis. This would be my first experience with the brand, and also with solid perfume in general. Thanks for the most generous draw.

  • I hadn’t heard of Velvet & Sweet Pea’s Purrfumery before reading this review and it’s very cool that Stern is filling an uncommon niche among artisan perfumers. Solid perfumes can be really useful—I love them for travel—but it can be hard to find good ones. Beaumes de Venise is way more complex than many I’ve tried; citrus, winey cassis, lush florals, leathery osmanthus, jammy resin notes. I’d love to try Stern’s work and experience what can be done with a beeswax solid-fragrance format.

    I’m in the midwest, USA.

  • This sounds so luscious! The berry and citrus with the balsamic and wine notes sound wonderful for a summer evening. I’m also curious about how it performs as a solid perfume — I haven’t experimented much with this format! I appreciate the beautiful description from Ida and the introduction to a new natural perfumer I hadn’t heard of. I am located in New York, in the US!

  • castlemicro says:

Writing from Florida (where summer has firmly taken hold), I really enjoyed reading Ida’s account of this multifaceted fruity scent. Some gourmands can overly simplistic, but it seems that isn’t the case with this one!

  • wallygator88 says:

Thank you for the nice review Ida.

I looked into Velvet and Sweet Pea after the CFB article and I found the website to be such a throwback to the old HTML website days. The color palette is out of this world. All of this goes to show the old school sensibilities of this natural perfumer.

This fragrance is very intriguing because of all the notes in it
I’ve been eyeing her Fir-ever young, which has been on sale for a while but I’ve not yet pulled the trigger.

It seems like allowing friends to name fragrances is common with this brand. I love the name, the sweet citrus fruity opening and the use of black currant buds and osmanthus. What was most surprising/interesting to me was the base of fir/balsam.

    Cheers from WI, USA

  • Thank you so much Ida for your lovely review on my newest solid perfume, Beaumes de Cassis! And merci to Michelyn too!

I just read the comments and thank you for all of your thoughtful words about my work. Velvet & Sweet Pea’s is a love business for me- making botanical perfumes with all of the richness honoring nature, and helping animals and endangered species. So thank you for taking the time, everyone!

Hugs and XOXO~ Laurie and the kitties
