Ten Best Perfumes of 2021

I’m happy to present today my best perfumes of 2021 in the company of ÇaFleureBon newest contributor, Rachel Watson. It’s been an interesting year perfume-wise, although Brexit, and much stricter customs controls in France, prevented me from testing as many fragrances as I would have liked (especially from USA and UK-based brands). With that – and my self-imposed rule of not including more than one fragrance per brand or per perfumer in my final list – taken into account, these are my ten best perfumes of 2021, discussed in alphabetical order:

AMOUAGE EPIC 56

Amouage Epic Woman 56 (Cécile Zarokian): Under the creative direction of Renaud Salmon, it’s been a year filled with exciting launches for the House of Amouage. Among their six fragrances of 2021 that I sampled, I had a hard time singling out just one; after much deliberation, my final choice was Cécile Zarokian’s Amouage Epic 56 from the “Exceptional Extraits” collection. For this mesmerizing – concentrated at 56% – extrait de parfum, Mme Zarokian used the original Epic Woman EdP (which she co-created) as her inspirational starting point, only to ultimately depart from it for a new olfactory journey. Substituting the damask rose with rose centifolia, and adding depth, smoothness and complexity that one just doesn’t take for granted in contemporary fragrance releases, the perfumer signed a softly tenebrous perfume, caressing like velvet: a sensuous, remarkably gender-fluid rose surrounded by a plethora of warm spices, jasmine tea, dry amber and precious woods, finished with Amouage’s signature frankincense.

Anatole Lebreton Racine Carrée (Anatole Lebreton): A thoughtful study on rhizomes that doesn’t feel like a conceptual olfactive experiment but like an absolutely enjoyable thing to wear, Anatole Lebreton’s Racine Carrée starts off strikingly earthy and rooty (with prominent orris butter, carrot and celery seed), before it transforms into an astonishing showcase for a green, stalky, crunchy Haitian vetiver, rich in lemony tones and smoky nuances. The addition of chamomile and clary sage enhance the prairie-like aura, completing the joyous aromatic experience. Few fragrances have surprised me as much, let alone captivated me, with their on-skin evolution during the last years. The distinctly modern character of Racine Carrée could be indicating a new creative phase for Mr Lebreton, who has – up to now – been composing fragrances that were rather vintage-style, albeit consistently inventive and refreshingly unusual.

Maison Violet Compliment (Nathalie Lorson): In a year when many of us sought for sheer, uncomplicated joy even in our fragrance choices, there came this gentle, euphoric creation that urged us to be kind to others, and to ourselves, by indulging in its graceful bouquet. Nathalie Lorson composed a floral ballad built around a spicy, buttery tuberose and a bright, intoxicating jasmine, accompanied by exotic ylang-ylang and sun-warmed orange blossom, with green (eucalyptus, violet leaf) and dewy (freesia, palmarosa) accents. With a softly balsamic base of hay, benzoin and vanilla lovingly supporting the bouquet, Compliment insists on its playful tuberose/jasmine dance until its drydown. The aesthetic pleasure of this fragrance isn’t the only reason I find it so deeply appealing – its emotional certainty and dependable comfort feel almost cathartic.

MARC ANTOINE BARROIS B683 EXTRAIT

Marc-Antoine Barrois B683 Extrait (Quentin Bisch): The already delightful olfactive “DNA” of the original B683 EdP entered the realm of profound pleasure with this 40% extrait version, realized once more by Quentin Bisch. Going much deeper than simply increasing the concentration, the B683 Extrait is a marvel of tastefully displayed richness, totally devoid of exhibitionism: its undeniable grandeur is an aesthetic choice whose purpose is not to flaunt opulence, but to fully satisfy as a piece of wearable art. A green, spiced apple meets a verdant, ozonic violet leaf; together they enter the base’s suave woods, where a multi-nuanced (polished but not devoid of animalic undertones) Laotian oud is reigning supreme, surrounded by loyal companions: lactonic sandalwood, leathery patchouli, sensuous vanilla and a cornucopia of electrifying spices. Simply bewitching on both men and women, B683 Extrait offers a sumptuous, golden perfume experience.

10 best Perfumes of 2021of 2021

Masque Milano Lost Alice (Mackenzie Reilly): Admirably balancing several accords (floral, tea, gourmand), each one beautiful on its own merit, the young American perfumer Mackenzie Reilly composed a pure delight of a fragrance: all the basic elements of the “Mad Tea-Party” from “Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland” are featured in the composition’s olfactory narrative; once blended together, however, none of them (not even the delicious carrot cake accord) manifests itself as too literal or antagonistic to the others. Playfulness and sophistication go hand-in-hand in Lost Alice, just like its literary source of inspiration has been captivating for more than 150 years children and adults alike, with both its apparent fairy-tale level and its more mature undertones. This innovative gourmand of poise, moderation and immaculate blending graciously delivers much more than the sum of its accords.

Matière Première Falcon Leather (Aurélien Guichard): Essentially released worldwide during 2021 (after being exclusively available at Harrods for more than a year), Falcon Leather is a veritable showcase of Aurélien Guichard’s talent, as well as my favorite leather-centered fragrance of a year blessed with several good ones. The perfumer created a deeply gratifying, highly textured leather accord that evokes both the rough and the smooth side of falconry gloves, based on a top-quality natural raw material: a phenolic, almost wild, birch tar from Finland. Furthermore, the fragrance is a case study for accomplishing harmonious contrasts and fascinating evolution on skin; the initial combination of robust, virile leather and smoky, mystical woods transforms into buttery, soft suede and deliciously sensual, spicy amber. Its androgynous beauty initially challenged me, before I fell totally under its spell.

MILANO FRAGRANZE BASILICA

Milano Fragranze Basilica (Violaine Collas): My favorite new Perfume House launch of 2021, Milano Fragranze mightily impressed me with an inaugural collection of eight consistently enjoyable, interesting and well-crafted fragrances, each one inspired by a different location of Milan. At least three of the scents became personal favorites, yet it was Basilica that emerged as my top choice. Violaine Collas’s interpretation of a majestic Cathedral’s ambiance was enthralling: built around a gentle frankincense, ornamented by purifying herbs and sacred woods, smoky and resinous notes, along with an unexpected lactonic undercurrent, Basilica conveys a striking olfactive impression of an old church’s ceremonial incense and soft candlelight atmosphere, along with a touch of its wooden and stone construction, while still displaying fresh and aromatic qualities. The fragrance channels spirituality, while fully acknowledging the mortal need to please the senses.

Best Perfumes of 2021

Parfums Dusita Anamcara (Pissara Umavijani): My usual rule of selecting only one fragrance per brand, and per perfumer, in my annual top-10 was especially difficult to follow this year. This is frankly the only reason why Parfums Dusita Cavatina – Pissara Umavijani’s outstanding, gender-fluid interpretation of the ever-elusive lily-of-the-valley – isn’t included here. But then again, it was impossible not to choose her Anamcara, this soulful fragrance that was born to celebrate friendship with a heart-warming, affecting combination of fruity tea, white flowers and dreamy woods, under the comforting energy of Madagascar vanilla. Just like Cavatina brought me a sense of spring hope all year-round, Anamcara unfailingly provided me with solace, optimism and utter joy even at the darkest of times. Perfectly reflecting the essence of its creator’s personality, this stunning fragrance radiates kindness, humanism and generosity of spirit.

PUREDISTANCE NO.12

Puredistance No.12 (Nathalie Feisthauer): Marking the completion of the first creative circle for the Netherlands-based House of Puredistance, this appropriately celebratory, special creation by Nathalie Feisthauer presented an unexpected, yet meaningful, olfactive interpretation of blue: the color is aptly reflected in the perfume’s serene self-confidence and cool, classical beauty, further embellished by golden gleams of understated opulence. With an opening as sparkling as a champagne cocktail, a lavish bouquet of rose, narcissus, orange blossom, jasmine and ylang-ylang, an enchanting halo of boudoir-like powderiness and gentle spices, as well as a chypre-toned base of elegant woods and sensual muskiness, No.12 gleams, sparkles and dazzles with the allure of a timeless, grand perfume.

SHALINI FLEUR JAPONAIS

Shalini Fleur Japonais (Maurice Roucel) Working, as ever, with Maurice Roucel, Shalini presented two creations in 2021. I enjoyed the superbly spiced vanilla/tiare duo of Vanille Rêve, but it was Fleur Japonais that emerged as a top-favorite due to its exceptional delicacy, originality and crystal-clear olfactive message. Mr Roucel interpreted the sakura fascinatingly, pairing its transparent, dainty floralcy with sturdier, lusher magnolia; in the end, the cherry blossom’s gentle “voice” wasn’t altered, just amplified. This was a great idea both aesthetically and conceptually, since in Japan the Sakura is a symbol of renewal and the fleetingness of life, further signifying the short but colorful life of a Samurai. That duality of strength and sensitivity is wonderfully expressed in Fleur Japonais. Aided by the spiritual aura of Japanese-style incense, sandalwood and labdanum, this is a perfume of healing, serene energy and ethereal beauty that’s touching in its purity.

10 best Perfumes of 2021of 2021

As a long time, reader of ÇaFleureBon, and a new contributor, I have always looked forward to reading the “Best of” lists each year.  Little did I know how difficult it would be to narrow my own to my  ten  best perfumes of 2021 even when it was not always easy to get my nose on them.  Without any further ado, in no particular order:

Vetifleur Rogue Perfumery

Rogue Perfumery Vetifleur (Manuel Cross): I have been a longtime admirer of Mr. Cross’ take on perfumery. Not afraid to break the rules, he brings us some of the best retro style scents I would normally have to hunt down as vintage bottles on the internet.  Vetifleur appeals to me because of the bright burst of green citrus that follows the best French classic chypres by blending a floral bouquet with hints of animalic muskiness and moss.  Thank you, Mr. Cross, for keeping this classic style of perfumes alive and accessible to all!

Benton Park by Shawn Maher for American Perfumer

Shawn Maher Benton Park for American Perfumer (Shawn Maher): I greatly admire both Dave Kern, proprietor of American Perfumer, and Shawn Maher, perfumer and creator of Chatillon Lux & Maher Olfactive, for their dedication to and promotion of independent perfumery. I have followed Shawn’s work ever since the gorgeous Weinstrasse and I have always enjoyed the creations that are commissioned by Dave Kern as special limited editions for his shop.  When I first smelled Benton Park I was not sure I would love it because of the initial blast of minty green but, sort of like how it takes time to appreciate the overdose of minty tuberose found in Serge Luten’s famous Tubereuse Criminelle, I found myself coming back again and again to get another whiff the mysterious green mint mixed with woods and some hints of powder.  Benton Park is another unique creation by Mr. Maher and while full bottles are sold out, you can still order samples from American Perfumer and hope that another batch will be released.

Papillon Perfumes Spell 125 is one of the ten best fragrances of 2021

Papillon Artisan Perfumes Spell 125 (Liz Moores): A new release from Papillon is not something that happens often so, you know when Ms. Moores announced a the release of Spell 125 and that it would include some of my favorite notes such as frankincense. pine and hemlock I didn’t hesitate to order a bottle.  I think it was my time spent in the Middle East where burning frankincense was a common occurrence that made me truly appreciate the different variations and facets of this note.  What Ms. Moores is able to do with what could have been an overwhelmingly medicinal scent by tempering it with soothing cool and fresh citrusy pine truly makes this a meditative, calming scent and one that proves again, that in the right hands, all-natural does not mean linear or short-lived.

Amouage Silver Oud (Cecile Zarokian): I admit that there is rarely a release that I ignore from Amouage but, I almost skipped this one because I didn’t think I needed another oud scent in my collection.  Fortunately, I was gifted a bottle from my mother for my birthday and was very surprised to find out how “not-oudy” this one is to my nose.  I certainly appreciate a true oud (see my recent review of RealOud 2021) but, I don’t often chose it to wear.  Silver Oud is one I reach for often thanks to some key similarities to my all-time favorite Amouage scent, Interlude Man.  I love the herbal green resins right at the top mixed with a rich, dense woodiness and warm vanilla.  Ms. Zarokian has done it once again for Amouage, another masterpiece!

Corpus Equus Naomi Goodsir

Naomi Goodsir Corpus Equus (Bertrand Duchaufour): Mr. Duchaufour’s second creation for this house is one that I expected to love and did right from the first wearing. I adore the entire line and as soon as I knew this was a leather scent with a horse background, I was hooked.  Cartier’s L’Heure Fougueuse IV always reminded me of horses and a barn full of hay.  Corpus Equus is the actual horse after a long ride and the smell of the warmed leather saddle mixed with the sweat from the animal itself.  This might not appeal to everyone but, to me it is the perfect leather scent!

Flesh Pekji

Pekji Flesh (Ömer İpekç): I am a little late discovering this Turkish independent brand but once I tried and fell in love with many of his early releases, I immediately ordered a sample set from his newest 2021 additions.  Of the four scents, Flesh is the one that called to me despite my initial skepticism that it would be too soft for my taste.  Not one to shy away from the most intense fragrances, there are times I need something more comforting and subtle.  This is no disappearing skin scent though, the apricot, Osmanthus, iris and sandalwood combine to give you a fuzzy, slightly fruity and at the same time, earthy aroma.  It is feminine without being coy or sweet and I dare say, retro-vintage.  Very suitable for day wear or whenever you want a warm scented hug.

Tauer Sundowner (Andy Tauer): Another perfumer whose work I will not hesitate to blindly buy is Andy Tauer. As soon as I saw that this creation included cacao and tobacco and was based on a sunset on the Nile, I was sold.  This is a classic “Tauresque” fragrance which, long-time afficiandos will instantly recognize.  Right from the top you get a rich spiciness joined swiftly by the tobacco and dusty cacao.  It brought me straight back to evenings I spent in Cairo and Luxor smoking shisha (hookah) and enjoying the cool breeze off the water.

Zoologist Chipmunk

Zoologist Chipmunk (Pia Long): Victor Wong continues to put out some of the best fragrances in the market and this year it is Chipmunk that really caught my attention.  I do not consider this to be one of the more “difficult” scents in the Zoologist line up but more like the Pumpkin Spice Latte of the collection.  The spicy nuttiness mixed with soft woods evokes a perfect habitat for this adorable chipmunk.  Cozy and comforting just like the first sip of a favorite fall beverage.

Vicious Cacao Maison Tahite

Maison Tahite, Vicious Cacao (Luca Maffei): I somehow missed the first line from this house (Vanilla) but when I was sent samples of this one and Cacao2 by Indigo Perfumery in their monthly subscription sample set, I knew I should go back and explore the entire collection.  While I loved the realistic chocolate of Cacao2 followed by a boozy, smoky amber, it was the less in your face chocolate of Vicious Cacao that won me over.  I adore the combination of dusty cacao with indolic florals.  A retro vintage elegant scent that is perfect for a cold winter day.

Patchouli by Persephinie

Patchouli for Scent Trunk  (Persephenie):E very month I look forward to the new fragrance curated by Scent Trunk and created by an independent artisanal perfumer. They may not all be my favorites but, I have yet to smell one that I hated.  This late entry (released this December) by Persephenie surprised me by being a patchouli scent that I love to wear.  It does start as sort of dank and earthy like the rainforest floor of Indonesia where this patchouli is from but slowly the sun breaks through to dry things out a little and you are left with a pleasant dirt almost as if you have been working in your springtime garden.  I look forward to wearing this more during the cool fresh spring months.

Special Mentions to my list of  best perfumes of 2021:  Amouage Epic Woman 56, Honour 43 and Reflection 46 all from the Exceptional Extraits collection.  Wild Summer Crush by April Aromatics  Gong by January Scent Project, Nappa Noir by Six Scents – Serpentine by Exaltatum. Egila Vaitkevice

So there you have it, my from a year where scents have hopefully helped us all get through another year of difficult and trying times.

  • These lists are all such an incredible joy to read! Despina’s list (in addition to at least two or maybe three others) has finally convinced me to try Lost Alice, despite my general tendency to not love gourmands. It’s been so, so nice to see Corpus Equus, which I am totally enamored of, on multiple lists. I love in NY, USA, and I would love to win Falcon Leather.

  • Like all of the other contributors, Rachel’s and Despina’s selections were full of many that I have never smelled yet am instantly intrigued by. In truth, Milano Fragranze’s Basilica is the only offering here that I have gotten my nose on (thanks again to the generosity of CaFleureBon and the M.F. team for my sample pack!). Maison Tahite Vicious Cacao, Zoologist Chipmunk, and Masque Milano Lost Alice (wow) are all ones that I would love to try one day, especially after reading the rave reviews and descriptions found here. Out of those offered, Matiere Premiere Falcon Leather would be my choice. Not only does the note breakdown sound fantastic, but every time I see or read about this fragrance I am reminded of the time that I met a real life Falconer and his bird of prey hunting partner (although his was a hawk). It was one of the most interesting introductions I have ever had, to say the least. Thanks as always for the opportunity and cheers from Illinois!

  • As I noticed, Amouage Epic 56 appears in the favorites with enviable consistency, and this is not surprising, because Amouage makes very high-quality and beautifully composed perfumes, I like the work of Cécile Zarokian, she is a very talented perfumer.

Anatole Lebreton is another wonderful discovery of this year, I have not tried the new Maison Violet`s Compliment, but at one time I was delighted with the desire of the brand owners to revive this old perfume company and my favorite perfume is the iris Nuée Bleue, and unfortunately, I haven`t tried Compliment, but I am sure that it is also made at the highest level!

Of course, my favorite brand of this year is Matière Première – all their fragrances are so bright, sonorous, understandable, diffusive that I don’t want to stop using them. I really like their Radical Rose and Encens Sauve. Falcon Leather is another masterpiece. I also dream of trying Corpus Equus, dedicated to Naomi’s beloved pet.

So many exciting discoveries, thank you Despina’s and Rachel’s and CaFleureBon team for covering the niche perfume industry!

I would love to win Falcon Leather,
    UK

  • A great list by both Despina and Rachel really intrigued by corpus equus and falcon leather but it would be almost impossible to choose from both lists both stupendous choices. If I am lucky to win I would love to win Falcon Leather. Thanks a million from the United Kingdom

  • A list that really knocks it out of the park. I am really fascinated by Amouage epic 56 and silver oud in particular. If I am lucky to win I would love it if I won Matiere Premiere Falcon Leather. Thanks a lot from the UK

  • Beautiful descriptions, i am attracted to FALCON LEATHER and B863, but every perfume is a piece of art.

  • This is an exquisite selection forThe Ten Best Perfume of 2021,Despina’s and Rachel’s choices caught my interest, i would like to win Vetifleur. Thanks for the opportunity , from Romania with love!

  • I loved reading this list. So many fragrances yet to know, and the ones that I know (Sundowner, Silver Oud) gave me another perspective. I would love to know all these fragrances and get to know them better.
I would like to win Falcon Leather. I live in the U.S.

  • Brad Woolslayer says:

I loved reading about Despina and Rachel’s selections for best fragrances of 2021. I was especially intrigued by Chipmunk and Falcon Leather. I’d love to win a full bottle of Falcon Leather. I live in Maryland USA.

  • Another thoughtful list! My must-sample list grows longer. This list has definitely convinced me to check out the recent amouage releases, which I’ve mostly skipped! It’s also renewed my curiosity about puredistance no. 12, which for some reason slipped under my radar this year even though I love opardu! I’m in the USA, and I’d love to win the bottle of vetifleur, as I’m a big fan of Manuel Cross’s work!

  • Again I see Zarokian and Epic 56 (must try!) and Silver Oud (love!), along with others that intrigue me.

Despina’s description of Falcon Leather puts it at top of my leather wish list (along with Corpus Equus). I was unfamiliar with Puredistance No.12 and am now looking for it. I was also excited to read Rachel’s review of Pekji Flesh another fragrance unfamiliar to me that sounds perfect for these times even when one’s norm may be to embrace intensity.

I’m in the US and if I were to win I’d choose Falcon Leather. Thanks as always!

  • Fantastic list! I do enjoy Chipmunk by Zoologist. Anamcara and Basilica are definitely on my wishlist. I’m also drawn to Spell 125 with its meditative frankincense. Thanks for the opportunity to try Flacon Leather. Mich USA

  • Excellent choices once again, thank you for these. Sundowner gets mentioned in many ”best of” lists, I need to sample it as I am fond of tobacco scents. Falcon Leather is quite good, I have been testing a sample of it. I would love a chance to win a full bottle! I live in Finland.

  • Wonderful selections! I’m excited to try many of these in the new year, especially Sundowner, corpus Equus, epic 56, basilica and all of Matiere’s line. I was blessed by CFB and Manny Cross to receive samples of the whole Rogue line which was fantastic! Unfortunately vetiver and I don’t get along that well so my choice would be Falcon Leather which has been on my radar since first learning about it through CFB. Thank you from Brooklyn, NY.

  • Wow! So many houses I need to explore. It’s hard to keep up with all of them. I really loved Naomi Goodsir Corpus Equus also. I only have a small sample, but want a full bottle. I am really intrigued by the Anatole Lebreton house after reading your review and then looking into the house’s offerings. I would love a bottle of Falcon Leather for the draw! I’m in the US.

  • I really would love to try a few fragrances from this list, especially B683 extrait, Falcon Leather and Patchouli by Scent Trunk. Still looking for an excellent patchouli fragrance would love to try this.
If I am picked, I would love Falcon Leather by Matiere Premier. Thanks.
    – Greetings from Maryland, US.

  • All great choices. This year Matiere Premiere had caught my attention with Neroli Oranger, Encens Suave, Radical Rose, and Falcon Leather. All are of the highest quality. I chosen as the winner my choice is Falcon Leather. USA.

  • I am curious what we are missing since Despina will not list the same brand or perfumer twice???? There’s that Lost Alice tempting me with it’s sophistication and playfulness. It’s been on my wishlist, but being confirmed that it is well loved by people who have tested way more than me puts it higher on my list. Always nice to see something I purchased making it on the list (Sundowner). If we didn’t have snow today, I’d be tempted to drive to my local shop to try this Corpus Equus. There must be something to it as I’ve seen it pop up so much at year end as well as some youtube reviewers have it on their year end list. I’ve got Basilica in my sample basket at Luckyscent!!! I’d love to win Vetifleur. Thanks for the great suggestions!! USA.

  • Thank you for this list (and all those others as well). I make notes on many of the scents, and plan to order samples of some throughout the coming year in order to discover them myself a bit – and then will come back to all your lists and reviews in order to learn even more 🙂

Would love to win Falcon Leather – Mature Premier

    Living in Germany, EU

  • These are all stunning picks, I am very intrigued by Amouage Silver Oud as I see it had made a few list. All wonderful choices Despina and Rachel’s reviews are very informative and extremely convincing, I want to try them all lol. I would love to win Falcon Leather. I live in Indiana USA

  • It seems from these perfumes that many perfumes are getting inspired by the classics from the past such as Spell 125 and Puredistance No. 12. And it is a good trend since there are many lovely classic perfumes. My choice is Falcon Leather. I am in US.

  • Love Rachel’s list! A Zoologist,Tauer and a Rogue fragrance. Giving these house’s some love is really what they need. They are just as good if not better than your really high end houses.

Rogue Perfumery Vetifleur sounds like a great addition to any shelf. Anything new and floral green ventiver blended right makes it sound super appealing to me.

Of course my choice would be Rogue Perfumery Vetifleur. Thanks from the USA

  • fleurdetilleul says:

Other two great lists of top 10 perfumes featuring more perfumes I have yet to try! Based on this article, the top 3 I’m mostly intrigued by is comprised of Puredistance No.12, Shalini Fleur Japonais and Papillon Spell 125 as they sound really good, but many have very interesting reviews, including Rogue Vetifleur for which I’d like to enter! Thank you! I live in the EU.

  • Thanks for the top 10 Despina and Rachel!

I’m usually drawn to the same style fragrances as Despina and enjoyed reading her favourites from this year. Falcon Leather has been on my wishlist since I read about it here on CaFleureBon.
I like a scent that tickles my senses and Despina describes it beautifully.

I’m also glad to see Sundowner mentioned by Rachel. I have tested it and it is an instant classic. A beautiful Tobacco and Cacao scent. I most certainly will be picking up a bottle in 2022!

I would love to win the bottle of Falcon Leather by Matiere Premier!
    Greetings from the UK!

  • Sandro Mateush says:

Interesting selections. It was interesting to see such a multifaceted TOP.
I’d like to win “Falcon Leather” from Matiere Premier.
    I’m in EU, Ukraine, Kyiv
    Thank you!

  • Like Despina, I also have three favorites from Milano Fragranze’s first eight fragrance releases, and “Basilica” was, by far, my favorite one (the other two which I enjoyed were “Diurno” and “Brera”). I enjoyed hearing that Despina also considers “Basilica” to be her favorite, and I agree with Despina that it should be considered a superlative fragrance: In my opinion, “Basilica” might be the best fragrance release of 2021. The only other fragrance which I got to try from the fragrances mentioned in this article is from Rachel’s list: it is Rogue Perfumery’s “Vetifleur”, which I do enjoy. I hope to try all of the other fragrances which they mentioned. If I win, then I choose (in this order): Matiere Premier “Falcon Leather”, and then Rogue Perfumery “Vetifleur” as my second choice. I live in the U.S.A. Thanks for the giveaway opportunity.

  • Great list! It reminded my to add the Maison Violet sample set and a Tauer Sundowner sample to my January purchase list. I would like to win Falcon Leather. Not only is the name cool, but it sounds sexy and rugged with the leather and birch.
    I live in Denmark, EU.

  • BostonScentGuy says:

I feel as if we’ve seen Anamcara in every one of these lists, which really makes me feel as if I have to get my nose on it! I love that Chipmunk is referred to as the “pumpkin spice latte” of the brand. I love the evocative description of Corpus Equus too! Also glad to see B683 and Manuel Cross, whose scents are all just lovely. To that end, if I won, Vetifleur would be my first choice (though I’d be just as happy with Falcon Leather). Thanks so much for the generous draw(s)! I’m in the US (Colorado).

  • I love reading these best of the year lists. It’s interesting to note those fragrances that make everyone’s lists (Lost Alice, Corpus Equus). I discovered Rogue Perfumery through Cafleurebon. I have a sample of Vetifleur and would love to own a larger bottle. I’m in MD. USA.

  • Maria Dispenza says:

I want to smell them all! I have worn perfume since I was a young girl and would not leave the house without applying a fragrance. It’s as basic getting dressed and the last detail of my routine.
I have not had the pleasure of experiencing these, and other, exotic scents, however. My exposure consists of fragrances that are much more readily available at a department store perfume counter. Perfumes that are well known and commercial.
I am ready to move up in the world of fragrances! If I were to win I would love to get Sundowner.
    Thank you!

  • Despina & Rachel!!!❤️❤️❤️ Love your top ten lists! Amouage Epic 56! The spices in this are rapturous! Maison Violet Compliment was one of the first full bottles I purchased based on a CaFleureBon review! It’s been a staple at work that has greatly helped me to survive these COVID times. It really does send a kind of radiant kindness, comfort, and catharsis out into the world. ❤️ Speaking of all that love and friendship, I have my samples of Anamcara and Cavatina waiting for January 1st. These are the two scents I want to begin the New Year (hopefully to set the tone and for some good luck). The perfume community has been a great joy and solace during these trying times and something about Dusita represents that to me. ❤️ In this household, we adore Aurelien Guichard and Maurice Roucel! Falcon Leather and Encens Suave are favorites. Pretty much anything Maurice Roucel does will make me happy! I really adore Vanille Reve and Shalini by Shalini, but every single fragrance in that line is fantastic! I think I’ve commented on many of the other fragrances on the lists in other posts, but just to reiterate: love! Maison Tahite’s Cacao scents were delightful (as someone who does not like chocolate in perfume, they even won me over; and, I love their Sel Vanille). Scent Trunk! I have a little bottle of a fragrance called Lime that I love! It has lime, agave, sea salt, ambergris, etc. So unusual and cool! It was in the wonderful Olfactif Monthly Subscription service. Thank you, CaFleureBon, for helping me to find this excellent program! Also, Perfumology has a monthly sample program! Indigo has a really fun monthly program with a blind scent! I’m so grateful for everything I’ve learned here, thank you all! Happy New Year! ❤️❤️

  • Rachel Part 2:
ps – If I were a lucky winner, I could not choose between Manny Cross and Aurelien Guichard fragrances! They are both so gorgeous! Either would be such an Amazing prize! If I haven’t said it enough: we Adore everything from Rogue & Matiere Premiere – just brilliant!

  • I’m a big fan of leather scents and really enjoyed both B683 and the extrait version! I trully recommend everyone to try it as it is incomparable with anything I’ve smelled so far and creates this cosy and warm atmosphere we all need right now.
This list also convinced me to try the Amouage epic 56, which I definitely will this year.
If I’m to win the draw I would pick Falcon Leather by MP.

  • It was interesting to see some names repeat in Despina and Rachel’s lists also, such as Amouage Epic, Corpus Equus and Lost Alice, and it was exciting to read about houses that I haven’t found much info about, but was interested in, such as Pekji, that I was curious about for some time. I’m glad they now made it to the selection.
Once again, so many lovely and intriguing fragrances to find and sample; especially Anamcara and Cavatina, that I have read about many times in this series of top 10s and which sound right up my alley, both of them.
I would be happy with either Vetifleur or Falcon Leather, should I win – especially the latter sounds mesmerizing, with its blend of leather, birch tar and softer suede and amber notes.
    I am in the EU.

  • The perfumer created a deeply gratifying, highly textured leather accord that evokes both the rough and the smooth side of falconry gloves, based on a top-quality natural raw material: a phenolic, almost wild, birch tar from Finland.

So it’s Matier Premier for me. Thanks. Europe.

Despins’s writing is always entrancing and nice to read Rachels alongside. Lists and lists, a wonderful way to ring out the old year and step bravely forwrad into the unfolding one. As always the energy and time your contributors devote to their lists is impressive. Would love to own Falcon Leather… Livong in Sw France

Ive enjoyed Miss Despina’s and welcome Rachel also. There were great releases all the way across the world, I must say that I have not tried most of them, but each one has a mark of a treasure.

    I’m interested in the basilica.
    Happy new year

I’ve got a great list for next year, Despinas and welcome Rachel, are all magnificent, beautiful choices!
I hope they do end up in my treasure chest!
    Located in Henderson Nevada.
I would like to have the sundowner.

  • I enjoyed reading these choices, most of which are new to me. I have not tried Manuel Cross’s Vetifleur, but I love several scents in his line so would be eager to try this one. I just received a sample set of Maitre Premiere Parfums but I haven’t had time to try the Falcon Leather yet. I have only heard good things about these perfumes! Thanks for all the scent suggestions! I’m in USA

  • I’ve been really enjoying these top 10 lists from all the editors and contributors! These from Despina and Rachel are no exceptions. So happy to see Pia’s Chipmunk and a Scent Trunk edition make the lists too. Viva the indie perfumers! And would absolutely love the chance to be entered to win Falcon Leather! Thank you for the draw and I’m in New York!

  • Love reading these lists, and my brain files away names which appear multiple times, for example, Lost Alice, Corpus Equus have appeared multiple times. From Rachel’s reviews, Amouage Silver Oud seems to my liking as I like Interlude Man, and Oud perfumes in general. My choice would be to Falcon Leather, were I to win this draw. Thanks for t

Thanks for the reviews and draws. From USA.

  • Another intriguing list! Most of the fragrances I have not had the opportunity to smell yet, but most of them seem very appealing based on Despina’s and Rachel’s mini-reviews.
If I narrow it down, Tauer Sundowner, Maison Tahite Vicious Cacao, Maison Violet Compliment Parfums Dusita Anamcara, are all ones that I would love to try in 2022.
I discovered Matiere Premier in 2021 and have been deeply in love with two of their fragrances – Radical Rose and Parisian Musk, so I would be more than happy to win Falcon Leather.
    I reside in the EU.

  • One can not possibly think to know all there is out there, in this beautiful fragrant world, but that’s never truer unless you read an article on Çafleurebon, especially one with special picks from Despina and Rachel.
I’m always drawn to minimalist, elegant bottles and colourless liquids – my theory is that I could never go wrong by blindly picking them. So, it is no surprise I’m very intrigued Pekji, Vicious cacao [Luca Maffei is responsible by my biggest crush these year], Corpus Equus, Compliment, Basilica.
I live in Europe and I’d like to win Falcon Leather.

  • I love all Aurélien Guichard perfumes, and I think “Falcon Leather” is one of his best creations. I did not have the chance to smell it but I read a lot about this interesting perfume. To create a new distinguished leather perfume with top-quality natural raw materials is not an easy task since there are many good leather-based fragrances on the market. This fragrance reminds me of the time when I was in UAE and saw a Falcon and smelled this atmosphere. Frankly, all Despina’s and Rachel’s choices are attractive, and worth the trial but my heart goes to Falcon Leather. I hope to own it. Regards from MI, USA.

  • Mazikeen Smith 24 says:

Me seeing my favorite perfumer, Cecile Zarokian’s creation got voted here twice says a lot, also got voted by Steven on his picks. I am not familiar with the perfumes mentioned here other than Cecile’s.
It seems that theres a lot of “to try”, and “must try” in this hobby. Me being an aspiring perfumer, it is kinda overwhelming, but still hoping to be one of the greats in the near future.
I would love to win Vetifleur, the notes appeal to me a lot!
Cheers and Happy New Year to all! USA <3

  • I would love to test new version of Epic Amouage. I really love Epic edp as I am more into spicy, strong fragrances recently. And that is a reason why I also love B686 – rich stuff. And, as always, I am intrigued by Zoologist newest releases, including Chipmunk and the description “Pumpkin Spice Latte” is really encouraging, especially in these cold windy days.
I would like to win: Vetifleur or Falcon Leather.
    I live in Poland.

  • I love the gourmand fragrances the best! Sweet perfumes are my thing.
I love this list you made and especially the descriptions!

  • An amazing list by both Despina and Rachel !
Love Marc-Antoine Barrois B683 Extrait – I find it nicer and more smooth, than original version.
I have not tried Amouage Epic 56 , but love Epic Woman and Cecile Zarokyan creations, so I am sure this one is masterpiece too.
Amouage Silver Oud and Maison Tahite Vicious Cacao sounds very beautiful.
I would like to win Matiere Premier Falcon Leather.

  • Thank you Despina and Rachel for your top selection .

From this list Rachel’s selections were my favourite for me try, particularly Sundowner and Silver Oud.

I would like to win Falcon Leather.

Greeting from Portugal, an awesome and lovely smelling 2022 everyone!

  • Claumarchini says:

I loved so much reading about Despina’s and Rachel ‘s choices, one the one hand because I must confess there are a few that I was not familiar with (especially from Rachel’ s selection – thank you for making me learn about new houses), and on the other hand because there are also some I also fell in love at first sniff (to name 2, Basilica and Vicious Cacao)! I am dying to try Epic 56: as a huge fan of Epic and Cécile Zarokian’s work, I am sure I would fall for it! If I were the lucky winner I would like Falcon Leather as Matiere Premiere has been on my wishlist for some time now. Greetings from Italy

  • Epic 56 Woman is new to me, but I have no doubts it’s a shapeshifting fragrances , like all Amouage fragrances I personally know.
Lost Alice is a favorite, again and again . Carrot Cake with Spiced Apricots, Honey Cream and Glazed Carrots , and drinking tea is what i’m thinking right now.
I have a sample of Encens Suave now , smoky , incense vanilla, with boozy feel. I see Falcon Leather is more focused on the uud , but keeps the resins, and leather . Encens Suave is a great fragrance , Falcon Leather smells too i believe.
    Milano Fragranze Basilica
Impressed by Nicoleta Tomsa review of Panettone I finally ordered the sample set, I should have it in a week , shipping is so slow lately.
Making Peach Cake with Mascarpone , and later eating it with friends in the garden, while drinking Black Tea. That’s what I imagined after reading about Anamcara .
    Amouage Silver Oud
“I love the herbal green resins right at the top mixed with a rich, dense woodiness and warm vanilla”.
    Tauer Sundowner
“rich spiciness joined swiftly by the tobacco and dusty cacao”
    Nice
Maison Tahite Vicious Cacao reminds me of Chocolate Ganache Cake, with Rum and Fresh Non-Candied raspberries on top.
Matiere Premiere Falcon Leather I’d like to win
Appreciate Despina Veneti and Rachel Watson hard work, and the giveaway campaign

  • Great selection from both, Despina and Rachel. I’d really would like to try Amouage Epig 56 since it appears on many lists. As far as I know there are notes such as pink pepper, jasmine tea and rose which I like and cumin and cinnamon sounds absolutely fascinating.
From the description by Despina I think that Compliment by Maison Violet would be something I’d like. Glad to see Lost Alice and Anamcara on her list too. Rachel sparked my interest with her description of Papillon’s Spell 125. There are some unique notes, at least from me. I have no idea how hemlock smells 🙂 but combination of frankincense and pine looks like interesting mix. In the other hand it is true that sometimes we need something more subtle and we need more feminine fragrances that are not sweet that’s why Flash by Pekji sounds interesting. I’d like to win Vetifleur by Rogue Perfumery and I live in EU, Poland.

Thank you for the great lists Rachel and Despina.

I was really pleased to see the work of Manuel Cross and Shawn Maher on this list. I love their stories and the work that they are doing. A huge shoutout to Dave Kern for his fantastic work on curating all these wonderful perfumers.

I would love to win either fragrance.

    Cheers from WI, USA

Thank you Despina and Rachel for your fabulous Best Of lists! I am happy to see Epic 56, Silver Oud, Corpus Equus and Vicious Cacao featuring here – they are seriously on my radar by now. Also the Milano Fragranze collection is something that feels unmissable to me and I will make sure to try those amazing creations as soon as I get the chance to. I would like to win Matiere Premiere Falcon Leather. I like my leather ambery, smoky and masculine leaning. Thank you from the Republic of Ireland, EU

  • As usual I’ll share my thoughts on the fragrances from Despina and Rachel list I know, or want to try:
    1. I’m so tired of waiting for my samples of all new Extraits to arrive, including Epic 56 Woman . Regular, so to speak , Epic Woman is Uber spicy on me.
    2. Lost Alice by Masque Milano is so refined and original. I also get a lot of rose , but it could be my body chemistry… Such a pleasant surprise.
    3. Falcon Leather is one interesting fragrance , with both dark, and light side. Funny thing is I perceive a lot of sweet tobacco. It may be some combination between the saffron, and the resins, I don’t know, but it’s prominent. Despina never mentioned tobacco, so it could very well be my body chemistry.
    4. Basilica blend of incense ,rosemary, thyme, and milk is not something you see everyday. Still I believe the fragrance is more of a classically structured churchy incense type of scent. It opens up with herbal notes of thyme and rosemary , glued the frankincense. Ever slightly sweet heart , leading to a woody base of sandalwood and cedar. Milk i barely get , if any.
    5. Anamcara by Parfums Dusita
A lot of fruits, rose , tea laying on the bed of sandalwood. In the base on me it gets almost jammy sweet.
    6 Puredistance No. 12
Puredistance fragrances are good, especially Rubikona and Sheiduna , but in my opinion way overpriced. $600 for 100ml ? No thank you. I’d rather buy both Material and Boundless , for a bit more.
    7. Rogue Perfumery Vetifleur
    Class in a bottle
    8. I’m familiar with Papillon Perfums , I know all of their fragrances, excluding Spell 125 . Anubis I own , and I like Bengale Rouge and Tobacco Rose. Spell 125 sounds good too
    9. Amouage Silver Oud
To be honest ever thought I’m a huge Amouage fan , I’ve always neglected the fragrances from the Library Collection , but Interlude Man comparisons are intriguing.
    10. Corpus Equus imo is Naomi Goodsir , and Bertrand Duchaufour take on the famous “Russian Leather” genre . It’s well made, but way too animalic for my taste.
    11. Pekji Flesh
“Not one to shy away from the most intense fragrances, there are times I need something more comforting and subtle.”
I don’t know Flesh , and the other new Pekji fragrances, but all Zeybek , Battaniye and Ruh are Uber strong, and loud.
    12. Sundowner Tauer Perfumes
    Must try
    13. I’ve smelled briefly the Vanilla Collection, and Vanextasy i liked a lot. Vicious Cacao I think is comforting gourmand with chocolate, raspberries and rum , well suited for the season deliciousness
I’d like to get Falcon Leather
    Thanks a lot

  • Well done, keep them coming the top 10s
    Most appealing to me are

Despina -> Amouage Epic Woman 56 , and Material.
I’ve been Amouage girl for a long time, nothing more to say
Despina -> in my opinion Despina did fantastic review in the original article .Cafleurebon article of the year to me “Soul Friend” , how Anamcara was created, the tribute to Christi Long Facebook group called “Eau My Soul” , tea, dried fruits, chocolatey patchouli, sandalwood , and special madagascar vanilla to balance the fragrance.
Despina ->Falcon Leather is intriguing leather fragrance I’ll try in the Fall. Ruff opening, and suede leather base with some resins, and vanilla adding more depth to the composition.
Despina -> Milano Fragranze Basilica I can’t go wrong with , I’m a fan of incense , slightly sweet milky and woody fragrances
    Rachel -> Amouage Silver Oud
Rachel -> Andy Tauer Sundowner , because of the tobacco and dusty cacao.
    I would prefer Falcon Leather
    Thank you for the opportunity

Despina and Rachel had some amazing selections for their top 10 fragrances of 2021. Vicious Cacao has been on my wishlist since I first read about it on Cafleurebon. I’ve also been wanting to try the Cacao and Tobacco combination of Sundowner. Corpus Equus sounds amazing with that dark leather vibe. Cecile Zarokian has had an amazing year creating Amouage Silver Oud which I love and Epic 56. B683 Extrait has also been on my wishlist for fragrances to try this year. I am from the USA. If I win I would like to win Matiere Premiere Perfumes Falcon Leather.

  • Another great, great list! Loved both lists – Despina chose some great, great fragrances like Epic 56 and B683 extrait, both of which I ADORED, but I would have to be honest and say that I though Rachel’s list was better suited for my taste!

Corpus Equus, Silver Oud and Spell 125 are all perfumes that I would wear daily! Animalic, deep, rich, just “mmmmmm…” 😀 Loved it!

I would love to win Falcon Leather! Of all the fragrances I’ve tried from the house, this one was the best, alongside Encens Suave! Beautiful, beautiful leather!

    I live in Croatia, EU.

  • I’m not really familiar with Despina’s choices, but I’ve seen so many 683 recommendations that it’s the most interesting for me so far. It’s just not really possible to get this one in Poland for reasonable price (like, not half bottle price). Guess I’ll need to keep looking for a sample. As for Rachel Watson, Zoologist is the most interesting to me. I’ve tried one of their fragrances and it was repulsive and inviting at the same time. Really unique stuff from this house. I live in Poland, I’d love to win Falcon Leather.

  • IvanVelikov says:

Epic 56 is impressive. I like Amouage, guaiac wood, frankincense and patchouli , and some vanilla .
Masque Milano Russian Tea i had the pleasure of smelling before. The steaming black tea is so strong in a good way, in Lost Alice the tea is more milky , the fragrance is sweeter, but still keeping its complexity.
A lot of people are talking about Matiere Premiere on Instagram, and YouTube, I’m still new to the brand.Falcon Leather starts like a wild man, and then turns into gentleman. I’m more comfortable with its second buttery, sophisticated suede part .
I had a good feeling about Milano Fragranze after all the praises , so I ordered the sample set , and I have to say I’m impressed.Classic high incense, herbal , just a bit sweet, spicy fragrance. I do agree with Despina about the milk , I can clearly smell it. I like how the lactonic, aromatic and the incense parts are so well blended.
Anamcara,Cavatina and my favorite Parfums Dusita Erawan do have the same vibe to me , joyful Spring fragrances.
    Rogue Perfumery Vetifleur
    Suit fragrance
Full of Egyptian mysticism, Spell 125 is artistic fragrance i’d like to try.Never had a chance to smell Papillon Perfums myself
    Amouage Silver Oud
Every time I’m thinking about Amouage, I’m thinking about Interlude Man . Stunning fragrance.Happy to own it , one of the best , if not the best ever created in the incense category . Finished 3 bottles during the years , and I’m on my 4th , and already made a dent on it .Of course I’m interested
    Tauer Sundowner
    Tobacco and cacao
    Zoologist Chipmunk
    Just because
Thank you Despina Veneti and Rachel Watson
    USA

  • it seems it has been a very good year for Alessandro Brun – Masque Milano and Fragnanze Milano perfumes are featured on almost every list so far. i Loved Rachel’s fresh take on best of 2021, the only problem is procuring American based (and in the last year also UK based) perfume in EU, they quickly get soo expensive.
Should I win, i’d like to win Matiere Premier Falcon Leather.
    I’m in EU

  • Wow , what a read
Epic 56 is plethora of spices and woods, with leathery vanilla so smoothen the blend. I do admit I’m interested.
Russian Tea and Lost Alice are both special, one is dark with leather, mint and tea , and the other carrot cake comfortable, and cozy. Both I’d gladly wear.
Falcon Leather opening sounds a bit hairy-chested, but mellows into sensual resinous suede leather.
Masque Milano Basilica . Woody , herbal fragrance, kind of milky
All Pissara fragrances are like music evergreens from Tom Jones , Little Richard’s , Elvis Presley to me , Anamcara too.
Spell 125 Papillon Artisan Perfumes , Pine , incense, slightly salty and animalic feel , all balanced with creamy sandalwood. I like it
    Tauer Sundowner
    Hard to sample fragrance
I’d love to win Matiere Premiere Falcon Leather
    Exciting giveaway, USA
    Regards

  • Thumbs up
Amouage fragrances are different .Similar expectations I have for Epic 56 . Its silky well blended aspects , leather ,vanilla , incense and tea i find attractive.
Just a few days ago Olya masterfully transported us to Russian country side with RussianTea, and black tea, birch , trees , woodiness, and a touch of incense.
Now first Ermano, then Nicoleta , and now Despina are giving us original , and inviting gourmand delight with Lost Alice.
Matiere Premiere I’m not familiar with, but I like complex fragrances, with a lot of depth. Falcon Leather is leather fragrance with a character.
I’ve been to Milano dozens of times , Basilica di Sant’ Ambrogio is famous tourist attraction , one of the oldest churches in the city.It was a bit surprising to hear there’s a fragrance inspired by the Basilica.I love incense, and lactonic fragrance, but I don’t believe I’ve smelled a fragrance that has both .
Anamcara like most Dusita fragrances is calming and relaxing fragrance , this time giving us some extra floral-fruity-woody experience
Are all Papillon Perfums inspired by Ancient Egypt, I’ve sampled Anubis..
    Tauer Sundowner
Andy Tauer is one of my favorite perfumers
Falcon Leather I’d love to win
    Thanks for the draw

Wow these are some great choices! I was very excited to see Despina include Amouage Epic 56 along with so many other of the Cafleurebon editors, as that makes it even more clear to me that I will love it, particularly since I’ve very much enjoyed the original epic and I love the house of Amouage. I was also happy to see Falcon Leather on her list since it was one of the Caefluerebon reviews that I was most intrigued by when I read the first time around, with it’s reminiscence of highly textured leather, robust and “virile,” strong yet sensual and with a high concentration of naturals. And I love to see that Dusita Anamcara was chosen by Despina as well, and I liked learning that to her this scent brings solace, optimism and joy in the midst of darkness – much needed in these times.

Rachel’s choices are also stunning. I was so happy to see the inclusion of Spell 125 as I absolutely love so many Papillon fragrances, particularly Dryad, my absolute favorite green fragrance, and Anubis, which Spell 125 calls back to as it’s inspiration. I was also thrilled to see Vetifleur as one of her selections as that is one of my new favorites, a perfectly classic green floral with plenty of moss and animalic tinges.

I live in the US. I would be happy to win either of the fragrances in this draw, but Falcon Leather be my first choice and Vetifleur would be my second choice.
