There’s nothing wrong with comfort.

Nothing wrong with boundaries.

Watching the storm from afar, knowing you are safe inside.”

Pekji is a new, indie brand that stemmed from Ömer İpekçi’s creations for friends and perfume lovers that discovered and supported him for a couple of years while he was „growing underground“, and made small batches of perfume for eager perfumistas.

In 2018 he presented his brand and five fragrances  (extraits) EauMar, Ruh, Odoon, Zeybek, and my favorite Battaniye. He stressed that all were created without concerns of cost of materials or  mainstream market appeal.

Pekji Battaniye perfume review

Blanket, photo by Pekji

There’s nothing wrong with wrapping yourself in a cozy, soft blanket on a cold and stormy evening, feeling its fibers touch your nostrils, smelling its familiar scent that perishes for a while upon washing it but returns faster if you use it close to your skin often enough again and again, turning it into your protective bubble. Just like with perfume: however simple or complicated a perfume formula might be, a transparent shield a perfume can offer is sometimes a better armor than those made of steel.

This blanket we use transforms itself often into a semipermeable membrane that keeps away the chaos of the outer world but lets your inner glow shine through, becoming a beloved comfort object that you cling to even when it gets rugged, torn at its corners or thinned down from years of use. I really believe that there’s a little of Linus Van Pelt in all of us, come stormy days and colder days: bright, wise, serious people that reach for their favorite cuddly comfort blankets“ when the going gets tough.

Oh, there are all kinds of blankets too, patchwork double-faced ones, woolen prickly covers, knitted or crocheted, smooth and feather-light fine cotton throws, plush pastel-colored softies, bright-colored decorative plaids – and they are all saying „hold me tight, everything is going to be alright“. Comfort objects, meant to provide psychological strength and emotional support in times of need –  just like perfumes.

Pekji Battaniye Review by Ömer İpekçi

Pekji Battaniye, released in 2018, means blanket in Turkish, and the idea Ömer Ipekci of Pekji standing behind this creation is wrapped around the concept of a comfort blanket. Ömer, a self-taught perfumer, visual artist, illustrator and graphic designer from Istanbul moves his fragrant brush in bold and wide yet very controlled swipes, which remind me of the way calligraphy artists draw letters and form words in one take with a soft brush dipped in black ink moving over empty whiteness of paper, tilting from its thin tip to wide base, with lighter or heavier pressure on paper, creating poetry of movement and art.

Omer’s fragrant blanket, Pekji Battaniye, is double-sided: its cover side is designed of voluptuous patchouli, a storm of dark green earthiness which is not cloying at all– it possesses an airy quality, resembling dark rainy clouds shifting across the sky and above wet earth just moments before the storm begins. This patchouli is a separate storm-in-a-bottle for itself: bold, warm and soft with balsamic undertones, and for some reason as this interval of the fragrance composition developed further, I was reminded of the smell of linen oil on canvas – strangely soothing in a most unexpected way.

After the grand, stormy entrance, this patchouli’s character enhanced by labdanum reminds me of scent of an old leather sofa covered with soft pillows and warm blankets. There’s a definite leathery feel to it, with a suede-like finish. Battaniye is thick, dark, potent at the beginning yet breathing warm air, touched by spices, crushed flowers, trails of smoke and flecks of ash. There’s a thin line between the outer storm and inner comfort, a layer of soft woods melted in musks that leads you to the reverse side, the soft, suave, and comfortable fabric of the blanket, so contrasting to the storm you’ve just witnessed through the window glass from the safety of your home. A flow of ambery-gold warmth takes over, carrying herbal-feeling spices closer to the surface, balancing and reducing the sweetness.  The drydown is reminiscent of a relaxing cocoon of soft woolly fabric wrapped around you that reveals musky tones hidden in its folds, like parts of your soul interwoven in the threads of your favorite comfy blanket, be it real or imaginary.

Patchouli/Amber is a legendary pairing, so one might think there’s nothing new to add. There always is, and there are always different interpretations of patchouli and amber accord possible, let alone the combination of two. Pekji’s Battaniye is ancient and contemporary at the same time, an intense experience with pronounced dichotomies of light/dark, earthy/airy, fierce/gentle, a contrasted rhythm, and above all – it’s a well-knitted fragrant artisan blanket, invigorating and soothing at the same time, in a strangely odd yet so familiar way.

There’s nothing wrong with comfort, and there are times and seasons when we all need it, even when  obtaining it means setting our own, invisible and fragrant boundaries.

Notes: Amber, honeysuckle, java vetiver, labdanum, musk, patchouli, soil, soot, wool.

Disclaimer:  I would like to thank Stefano Saccani and Ömer İpekçi for the Discovery Set given to me at Pitti Fragranze 2019. My opinions and feelings are always of my own.

  • I am quite drawn to fragrances that convey the idea of textiles, so the cozy blanket concept is quite appealing. I am curious to see how the soot and wool notes play into the mix, and I am of course interested in trying all the scents from the line. I live in the USA.

  • Sounds interesting. I can picture and get an idea of what this might smell like but don’t know for sure till I try. I like the idea of a cozy blanket. Haven’t got the chance to try and Pekji fragrances. So this will be nice. Thanks, Ca

  • Markus Ebrahim says:

I’ve heard so much good stuff about this brand and Patchouli is one of my favourite notes. The description of Battanyie, especially the image of a worn in leather sofa covered in soft blankets, is something I would love to smell! I live in the UK)

  • Shamrock1313 says:

Great review and the thought of comfy blankets while relaxing on a leather couch with the fireplace at full burn sounds fantastic.

  • BostonScentGuy says:

This sounds like the perfect cozy winter scent. I love the blanket metaphor, and an ambery patchouli-labdanum combo sounds great! Thanks for the draw. I’m in the US.

  • The scents sound like something you would like took wrap yourself up in to replace the cozy blanket. I love MY cozy blanket and would like to find a scent to make you feel as if I am always wrapped up in it. USA

  • wallygator88 says:

I like how this fragrance symbolizes warmth, comfort and safety. I also love the thought that went into desigining these bottles.

    Thanks for the review Elena.

    Love from Madison, WI, USA

  • I’ve heard a lot of good things about Pekji house and now i’m really curious about it. Battaniye looks pretty good from the notes list and Elena’s nice review. I would love to try this, thanks for the chance, i’m in the EU.

  • Fragrace IS my comfort blanket. I love the reference to boundaries. Thanks for a beautiful introduction to Pekji Battaniye. USA

  • polaroidcaesar says:

The idea of a fragrance as a comfy blanket is brilliant! There are few things more comforting to me than the smell of patchouli and amber, and the addition of soil, soot, and wool sounds like an intriguing twist on the theme. Pekji’s fragrances have always drawn me, but I’ve never had the chance to try them. I’d love to win the discovery kit and finally be able to! I’m located in Taiwan

  • Elena’s beautiful review made me think of all the cherished notes on blankets all over my house – Nivea, pit bull, organic patchouli laundry detergent, the day, the night. Sometimes it hurts to wash them. But I do, like Elena says, with the knowledge they will be rescented, and in a slightly different way, each time. This perfume sounds like home and I own that couch. No kidding. I live in the USA.

  • I am drawn in by the cozy concept of being under a blanket during a storm. The blanket of Patchouli and Amber. It sounds wonderful. I have not tried Pekji fragrances yet so a discovery set also sounds great. In CT USA. Thanks for the draw.

  • Intrigued by all the notes especially soot, wool and soil. This fragrance seems like a perfect scent for fall/winter great bottle design. Thanks from UK

  • The soot, soil and wool notes sound interrsting and the analogy that a perfume is a stronger armour than steel applies to this fragrance. Cheers from UK

  • I like the intention behind this perfume and how wearing your favorite, enveloping scents can make you feel stronger and safer than a steel armor. I also love labdanum as a note, so I would love to smell this and everything else in the line, cuz I never tried them. Thanks. From the EU.

  • I really love the idea of the blankets, certainly during these winter times. Hope to win this draw. Living in the EU

  • There’s nothing wrong with comfort indeed. I love the inner / outer contrast you describe and find this blanket very intriguing! So I would love to win this to Germany, thank you for the draw!

  • I love how approachable and intellectual Elena’s perception on this composition. Patchouli is a very overused ingredient and it takes alot to stand out from the ocean of patchoulis. Based in Canada.

  • We are always happy for a new brand that appears on our radar, in this case the surprise is supported by an interesting concept that invests creations in every aspect. All the extracts sound great and this one is particularly looks comfortable and magnetic.
    I live in Italy EU
    Thanks!

  • The Plum Girl says:

Thank you for all your lovely comments! I’m wearing Battaniye today as well, and that little sample goes a long way: longevity is excellent (it is an extrait) and projection – now, after 8 hours after applying it – is moderate. Should you win this Discovery Kit, let us know your thoughts. Good luck!

  • This is a very difficult season for me, fraught with personal loss, deaths in the family, etc. A comfort blanket scent is very appealing in these circumstances. I am in the US

  • I love the duality of this perfume. From the menacing opening (resembling an overcast sky which quickly turns to storm clouds) to the comfortable protection (being indoors, in a peaceful place, watching from the comfortable couch as nature unleashes its forces, while sipping a hot beverage). Very evocative and seems like this perfume has a life and a story of its own. Would love to try the samples, because i’m unfamiliar with the house. I’m from Finland.

  • ScentitarFragrance says:

what appeals to me most is his taste of creating intense and almost dark fragrances. I am often drawn to these and love patchouli and amber as well. Those duality of nature fragrances with light and heavy notes and textures are exiting. I live in the usa, ms state and thank you for this chance too.

  • Your description of Pekji Battaniye as a comfort blanket perked my interest. Also makes me want to find out what the smell of linen oil on canvas is like, especially a soothing one. A perfume that offers psychological strength and emotional support…am definitely intrigued. Regards from USA.

  • what appeals to me about Pekji fragrances is the artistic description of the making of blanket fragrance. Not only does it smell leathery but reminds the smaller of comfy blanket on a cold night with little hint of the leather from the sofa. Defiently would love to try this concept of blanket. MN, USA

  • This sounds very interesting. I like the idea of a perfume blanket for stormy days and colder days especially with the recent weather we have been having in NE. I am also wondering if the honeysuckle note is noticeable especially combined with the amber. Live in the US.

  • The picture that was drawn between the storm and the comfort blanket sounds fantastic. I am a dyed-in-the-wool amber lover, and the pairing of patchouli and amber should be excellent! I want this, and the rest. I, unfortunately, have no experience with this perfumer, but would like this. I live in Maryland, USA.

  • Pekji Battaniye sounds like a cozy blanket and I can never have too many blankies. I’m in the U.S. Thanks for the draw.

  • Hi!
I followed Ömer since his beginnings (I remember receiving samples in an empty cigarette box ahahah).
His “official” line is new to me, and I’m so eager to try!
The idea of a contemporary take on classic accords (liek amber/patchouli) is very appealing to me!
I live in Italy, thanks for the draw!

  • Yana Lysenko says:

This is a new brand to me but I missed Pitti this year so its nice to learn about something so deeply thought through. I wish there were such a blanket that kept worries and stress away. Maybe this perfume will do the trick? I’d love to find out. Thanks, I am in Germany.

  • I love to discover unique brands such as Pekji here at Çafleurebon. The concept of the warm comforting blanket is appealing. Patchouli, Amber, Leather … yep! I’d be honored to try fragrances from such a seemingly independent spirit as Omer Ipekci.

  • I so badly need some comfort. My comfort blanket. I am so sick and tired of always being tired. And why is it that I am tired like 23 hours a day? It is only because of the hectic world we are living in and others’ expectation to throw yourself into the jungle, into the storm. It is ok to be safe inside. This, my friends, is a lesson I have learned today from this review 🙂 I live in Romania

  • My interest in anything Turkish grows lately. Especially the food.
I had a chance to smell some (other) Turkish fragrances at the new Istambul airport. But Battaniye sounds even more promising. Just hearing it was created without concerns of cost of materials and disregarding new (and disapointing) market trends makes it stand out.
Elena describes a harmony of inner contrasts, and that’s what I look for in any fragrance. I live in US.

  • This appealed to me especially after reading, “…it’s a well-knitted fragrant artisan blanket, invigorating and soothing at the same time, in a strangely odd yet so familiar way.” The discovery set would be a great way to learn about Pekji’s fragrances. Thanks for the review and the lovely draw. I’m in the USA

  • Can’t wait to spray Pekji Battaniye on an ultrasoft, warming blanket this holiday season. VA, USA.

  • This description of “outer storm and inner comfort” is so appealing. From the description, it sounds like the patchouli leads to a more complex combination of fragrances. I like how Elena seemed to capture that progression. I live in the US, in North Carolina.

  • Thanks for the review! Amber is one of my favourite notes and the combination with patchouli makes Battaniye even more appealing! I would love to discover this brand! I live in Romania, EU.

  • I never thought of perfume as a comfort item and this idea is very intriguing to me. The imagery is also quite on point and I’m now picturing myself wrapped in plush Battaniye 🙂 Thank you Elena for the review and Pekji for the giveaway. I’m in USA

  • I have read about Pekji and would love to try them all
I really was interested to learn about him as the first artisan Turkish perfumer

  • The idea of the blanket- fragrance, especially now in the winter, is certainly very appealing! Elena is so eloquent in her review, regarding the comfort and the protection of oneself, by the cosy fragrance. I’d like to give them all a try. Thanks, Elena, for the review! I live in EU.

  • Ana Guimaraes says:

Being an introvert in an extroverted-designed world makes me want to take a deep dive into these fragrances and use them as a lovely reminder of things I gold dear: walking through the forest alone (soil), being home with 3 blankets (wool) by the fireplace (the warmth of amber and patchouli). This fragrance already feels like a best friend.

  • I love amber and patchouli. Rose comforts me, too. This sounds lovely. I’m in the USA and hope I can track these down.
