At the gateway to the Moroccan Sahara is Zagora, a place of improbable contrasts. Whipped by sandstorms and stinging aridity, the Draa Valley city is hedged by an expanse of sand dunes, yet lush with date palms and citrus. Even as the Sirocco blows, Zagora’s air carries the syrup sweetness of orange blossom and ripe peach through its dusty streets in hypnotic incantation. Likewise The Different Company’s White Zagora, which aerates typically saturated flower notes and makes them inviting even in the height of summer. Created by Symrise master perfumer Emilie Coppermann as part of the brand’s 2013 L’Esprit Cologne collection along with Kashan Rose and South Bay, White Zagora is an easygoing yet vivacious tonic of summery tree blossoms mixed with citrus that feels sparkly, carefree and soothing in sticky heat.

The Different Company White Zagora is a scent souffle; its tree blooms and fruit are kept light and buoyant from start to finish. With the first spray there’s an avalanche of peach, light but textural and I can almost feel its fuzzy skin on my wrist, hoisted by clean, mineral musk. Right on its heels is a deliciously bitter squeeze of citron that sparks everything up and gives White Zagora its lively bounce. Everything remains peachy keen for a while as I wait for the orange blossom to arrive. But up next is whiff of osmanthus instead, lightened from its characteristic leather-dried apricot aroma to near transparency so that what remains is an airy tanginess. Something green and just slightly herbal enters the mix – reminding me of ferns – and I’m thinking there might be some hedione© in here.
The heart, however, is all fluffy white flowers; peach blossom, foamy neroli, orange blossom, all suffused with bergamot so that they nearly glisten. The representation of orange blossom here is downy rather than honeyed; likewise the peach blossom, which has the feel of pale pink muslin. I am searching for the listed tuberose here; usually, this flower is a fleshy, lactonic bombshell that announces itself roundly. But its presence in The Different Company White Zagora is subtle. Eventually, I can just detect its creaminess in the opacity of the mid-section, which keeps the fragrance from disappearing into ether.

Today, with the heat and humidity at its inevitable August pitch, The Different Company White Zagora works a treat. It’s airy but substantial, floral and fruity without overt girlishness, sophisticated rather than bridal. If you’ve been searching for that easy-to-wear but elegant hot weather fragrance, wander into the oasis and stay awhile.
Notes: Neroli, citron, bergamot, orange blossom, peach blossom, tuberose, osmanthus, white musk, amber.
