Thameen London Insignia (Alexandra Carlin) 2022 + A Forward-Thinking Giveaway

We have reviewed several Thameen London fragrances, but did you know that Insignia was the first fragrance under Christopher Chong’s residency? After reading Senior Editor Karl Topham ‘s article on Fanfare on March 17th, 2023, I reached out to Brand and Artistic Director Christopher Chong for an exclusive quote on the creative process for Thameen London Insignia. For me, it is as much about the people and their vision for a heritage brand, or any brand for that matter, as it is the perfume. –Michelyn Camen, Editor-in-Chief

When I joined Thameen London last year, my immediate goal was to set the brand on a path for artistry through storytelling with a forward-thinking British semantics adapting to an ever-changing landscape in perfumery. The mantra I set for Thameen London is “We create for today, thinking of tomorrow.”

I have known Symrise perfumer Alexandra Carlin since she was a trainee, which seems like a lifetime. I spotted a unique artistic spirit in her very early on, which needed to be nurtured carefully, rather than fast tracked with many perfume wins.  We collaborated over 10 years ago with a white floral fragrance which has become a best seller for the previous brand I worked for. Alex and I have stayed in touch and I have followed her artistic and technical growth. She has an extremely rare talent that takes time to develop – it is a poetic investigation into perfumery that makes her look beyond the raw materials in which she digs deep into the soul of the story and ingredients. Alex makes the world see things that we could never imagine with her imagination.  I was extremely excited when Alex agreed to create Thameen London Insignia, I truly believe no one could have done a better job than her and I believe it is fate that we have been able to rekindle our collaboration after over a decade.  Everything in life requires the right place at the right time.

With Thameen London Insignia, I want everyone to feel all the nuances of the story we articulate through the perfume.” -Christopher Chong, Brand and Artistic Director

Top: Bitter orange, whiskey accord, milky fig accord

I’m a huge fan of the bottle and I love a fragrance that has a nice whisky note I just moved to the US from Jamaica and getting my hand on a fragrance like this was difficult. So now that I’m in the Us I would love to start a collection and this would be a great addition

I am a fan of Chong since Amouage era. After Chong left Amouage the house fell into decay. I was praying for Chong coming back to perfumery.

  • fzhang1984 says:

I love how this can be both fresh and dark. Been looking forward to trying Thameen London fragrance.

  • LATONYA GIPSON-BOWMAN says:

Great read by Michelyn….I love how she included personal information….The way Steven describes the notes and the Fragrance definitely makes me want to apply to win a bottle from this house.
We create for today thinking of tomorrow

  • Love this video and article I want to win so badly! Great house! Love the idea of the fragrances.

  • Hi, I’m Justin. I think that Christopher Chong looks like a great perfumer. I have respect for him and his work. After watching Steven’s video, I really loved the presentation of the perfume. I also imagined how good it must be with its blend of spiciness and brightness. I haven’t tried the brand out yet but I have no doubt that every fragrance is very unique.

  • johnmadison says:

Christopher Chong’s introduction is really special to see the prolific approach to collaborating with other visionaries to make amazing fragrances even after a decade of making something with that same person, coming back together to make a beautiful perfume. I smelled this one at a men’s department store in Minneapolis, and I can say that it is gorgeous.
I really enjoyed Steven’s review explaining how this is an all-season fragrance with the bitter orange and brighter notes complimenting warm weather and by its longevity it could also be great to wear come colder seasons.

I liked how Steven described this fragrance as being unique and enchanting. I enjoyed the quote where Alexandra digs deep into the soul of the story and ingredients as well. I live in Maryland USA and would love to win a bottle of Thameen London Insignia.
I’d like to thank Twisted Lily for the generous giveaway. Good luck to everyone who enters.

The milky fig described sound incredible! I love how Steven completely reviews his fragrences. He doesn’t leave anything to imagination. I’d love to win this. I live in Indiana.

I’ve been a fan of this house since my first sample of carved oud & my favorite royal sapphire. These are very good high quality extraits that i continue to enjoy! As always Steven is very informative and passionate. What I loved about Christopher Chongs vision of combining fragrance through story telling. For me, each one of my fragrances is a story that takes me back in a place in time. Good luck to all from Boston!

  • Steve Fernandez says:

What appealed to me about Christopher Chong intro is when he said “We create for today, thinking of tomorrow.” That right there peaked my interest.

What appealed to me about Steven’s Review is his description of the fragrance having a fresh & spicey vibe with the whiskey accord & the bitter orange.

  • From the review, it feels like that Thameen Insignia is a smoky, green composition that has a unisex vibe to it. Due to its nature, it can be worn all year round. I am in US.

  • I love boozy fragrances or even a hint of booze and fig. I love when a fragrance tells a story and Christopher mentions how Alex’s imagination can take one to places never thought of. Steven called this fragrance “Enchanting”, which has to be amazing… I’m older so this scent will fit me well..

    Indiana USA

  • Bitter orange and whiskey on the top, and Vetiver on the base. I need to own Thameen London Insignia.

I liked the video from Steven, he always hit the mail in the head.
All season fragrance, it’s exactly what I am looking for, a signature fragrance or Insignia.

I would love to win this giveaway.

    From Massachusetts.

  • So sweet to read Mr. Chong’s thoughts about Ms. Carlin’s work and how he just knew deep inside that it was the perfect time for her to take on this creation. It’s inspiring to see that he had continued observing her growth since their initial collaboration so many years ago. The fragrance sounds lovely, full of rich notes and an apparent duality of fresh and spicy. I love compositions that have interesting juxtapositions in them and this seems to have them in spades. Steven calling it “impeccably unique” also piqued my interest as truly uniqe profiles are sometimes hard to find. Glad to see that Mr. Chong seems to have brought his love for fragrance as a form of storytelling to Thameen London. I expect to see them releasing other bold and daring scents under his direction. I live in NC, USA.

  • YES, I am very interested and excited for this giveaway. Watched Steven’s review and got intrigued by notes and if course the brand Thameen. I am a follower of @cafleurebonofficial @Redolessence @thameenfragrance @twistedlily360
    I am from US

  • Impeccably unique?! Thats sounds very very interesting and desirable. Thanks to Steven for a great review and to Twisted Lily for the generous gift! I believe I could definitely wear this. I am interested in winning this baby. I live in US
    Thank you

  • ramsesperez52 says:

My favorite Thameen fragrance is still Royal Sapphire. Christopher mentioned trying to articulate a story through perfume and I feel like Insignia was the missing link as I believe this is the first whiskey driven fragrance by Thameen. Steven said it’s a mix of it being luminous and sort of boozy so that sounds very appealing and perfect for the Spring season. Cheers from NJ, USA.

  • That is great review I’m intrigued to test this royalty smelling perfume. Description sounds very inviting, soft smooth wintery Insignia fragrance. I’m in US, I’d be pleased to add this beautifully looking bottle to my small but deeply loved collection.

  • Jeremy Chaboya says:

The creative process behind Thameen London Insignia involves a unique artistic spirit and a poetic investigation into perfumery by Symrise perfumer Alexandra Carlin, as recognized by Brand and Artistic Director Christopher Chong.
Thameen London Insignia is the result of a collaboration between Chong and Carlin, who have a history of successful fragrance creations together, including a best-selling white floral fragrance.
Chong’s vision for Thameen London is to create perfumes that reflect a forward-thinking approach to perfumery with storytelling and artistry, setting the brand apart in an ever-changing times.
Winning the free bottle of Thameen London Insignia would provide me with the opportunity to experience the result of this unique creative process and appreciate the nuances of the story that Chong and Carlin have articulated through the perfume.

  • Paul Ransom says:

The main thing I get from Steven’s review and Christopher’s introduction is this fragrance is something unique and takes a different path. Steven expressed the uniqueness if the scent and how it sets itself apart. He said it’s very versatile for all seasons as well. Christopher also said he took a new path with Insignia. My favorite Thameen fragrance is Carved Oud. I’m in the USA.

  • Jeremy Chaboya says:

I neglected to comment about Steven review from YouTube channel Redolessence. Steven begins with familiarizing his audience with the brands beautiful and artistic presentation. Steven graciously explains that The perfume Insignia by Thameen London as a boozy yet fresh composition. Notes such as whisky and bitter orange leading the olfactory charge. Facets of bay leafs, rose and geranium giving the fragrance a minty fresh rose vibe. Steven suggests that ingredients such as the whisky and fig lend support and gives the fragrance milky lactonic edges while base notes such as vetiver, Sandalwood and suede give support and hold up the unique fragrance. I’ve only been a subscriber to Redolessence for a short time maybe three or four months but I continue to watch because Steven is so detailed and passionate about fragrance and perfumery. I hope to win this very unique perfume for my wife’s upcoming birthday. Steven describes it as something my wife would enjoy.

  • Great review as always Steven. Nice to hear a unique and original fragrance these days. I’m looking for a new formal fragrance that’s not cloned but if this as good as advertised than one maybe coming soon for this.

Congrats to Thameen for getting Christopher Chong. He will change the landscape of Thameen much like he did for Amouage.

    Thanks from the USA

  • I love myself some boozy and leathery fragrances. From Steven’s review, to be able to somehow be fresh while being boozy with leather piques my interest and judging from Christopher Chong himself, this fragrance and the following scents that go through his creative management seem to aim for stamping their mark firmly as a future classic. Hailing from Portland, OR.

  • Christopher Chong says:

Thank you for everyone’s love and support, especially Michelyn!!! Hope all of you will join me on a new olfactive ride. Lol

  • I love how Steven emphasized the unique combinations of notes in this scent — really intrigued to see how the booziness plays with the creamy lactonic notes and the bright, minty, herbal ones. As for Christopher Chong’s introduction, I loved how he emphasized that his collaboration with Alexandra Carlin was very deliberate, thoughtful, and a long time coming, and that everything happens at its right time and place. I am located in the US 🙂 thank you!

  • I received a sample of Carved Oud and fell in love with the complexity, and when I had the opportunity to test Thameen’s other work at Saks I was equally blown away. Insignia sounds great, I’d love the chance to win!

  • I found it interesting that Christopher did not mention the name of the ten year old best-selling perfume created with Alexandra. From the video I learned that this perfume to the reviewer is very unique and original to him. US

  • While Christopher Chong at his previous brand he directed the creation of some of the most interesting fragrances in the world. I am really excited to see what he does at Thameen! I like that he reconnected with a previous perfumer to come out with his first release and had the confidence to name it after the city where they are headquartered. I also liked how Steven presented the fragrance and described the scent in detail. It makes me excited to try it! I really enjoy Carved Oud and Regent Leather from the brand. Cheers from Texas!

  • I appreciated Michelyn getting a quote from Christopher Chong about Thameen Insignia, because I agree that the artistic vision matters so much! As for the notes, I liked how Steven found this fragrance to be so original, as I love sniffing unique creations! I would love the opportunity to check this out. I’m a Redolessence subscriber and my current favorite from the brand is Carved Oud. I’m in MN USA.

  • The notes in Insignia are really interesting. A milky fig accord combined with whisky, bay leaf and cuir velour de lairs speaks to the skill of the perfumer and Christopher Chong certainly has an amazing track record. Steven describes Insignia as unique and I believe it. I love the blue or Thameen bottles. It’s just gorgeous. I’ve never tried any Thameen before. MD, USA.

  • I liked that Thameen London and Christopher Chong joined forces. I do enjoy Thameen fragrances. Steven mentioned bay leaf and geranium, which ate a few of my favorite notes. The whiskey accord piqued my interest, because I love unisex fragrances. Thanks for another awesome review and draw. Mich USA

  • What interests me about Steven’s review is how he describes the contrast throughout the opening and the mid. It was interesting to learn something new about how geranium can have different aspects depending on what it is combined with. I was pleased to see how Christopher Chong is able to maintain professional relationships and let people grow until they are ready. Everything takes time and being recognized for your growth by being tasked with creating something beautiful is good to see. I’m also glad to see that Christopher Chong is being proactive at Thameen rather than just following trends that have proven to be successful. It’s always better to be a trend-setter.
    Cheers from Illinois, USA.

  • Gnossiennes says:

Thanks for the review and introduction! I have not yet tried Christopher Chong’s creations in Thameen, but the storytelling idea sounds continuous from his former works in Amouage, and grants a present-futuristic orientation in Thameen. It would be nice however, if Christopher can share us more on the creation of Insignia.
Steven’s review is fabulous as always. The diverse direction sounds very promising. ‘Such a champion fragrance’, this high comment intrigues me more!
    Greetings from San Mateo, California.

  • Regis Monkton says:

From what I’ve tried from Amouage, I like much of what they released during the time Christopher Chong was their creative director. From Thameen London, I’ve tried “Regent Leather” and I like it. I’d like to try more from Thameen London. I like their mantra: “We create for today, thinking of tomorrow” because I think that good taste and sustainability are important. In “Insignia”, I want to see what the combination of bitter orange, whiskey, and fig is like. I’m also interested in the aromatic aspect of it. It was helpful for me to hear Steven’s description of the fragrance. I live in MD, U.S.A.

  • WaltherP99 says:

“We have reviewed several Thameen London fragrances, but did you know that Insignia was the first fragrance under Christopher Chong’s residency?”

No , I actually don’t…I thought Fanfare was the first one.
Insignia I don’t know yet, but I’m familiar with most of Thameen fragrances, and if I have to rate my favorite ones:
    1. Nassak / Carved Oud
    2. Amber Room
    3. Cullinan Diamond
    Nassak is in my possession
I like the way Christopher Chong spoke about Alexandra Carlin , for a very good reason I believe Tonka Blanc
Velvet Tonka , Villa Néroli, Beloved Man are all great.
Insignia is appealing to me for a variety of reasons, like Michelyn told us it’s the first Thameen fragrance coming out under Christopher Chong guidance, Alexandra Carlin being the perfumer, and of course the whole composition.
Posh citrus aromatic playing with boozy, spicy , fruity and earthy undertones . I’m definitely intrigued by such sophisticated fragrances.
    All profiles I already follow , @waltherp99bg
    Thanks a lot

  • I liked Chong’s introduction when he describes his collaboration with Alex and talks about how Alex is patient with her creations and takes the time to dig into the soul of ingredients and story and not about rushing many products to market. This attribute is missing a lot in the art world, in general, and not just in perfumery. Too much commercialization and not enough art. So I am glad to hear Chong’s approach in his introduction. I am a Redolessence subscriber and enjoy Steven’s video reviews. I like the bottle presentation, the longevity of Thameen London Insignia, and the rich notes. And most of all, the patience and attention to detail gone in the crafting of Thameen London Insignia. Thanks for the review and draw. From continental United States.

  • I loved reading Christopher’s words about Alexandra’s poetic skillfulness. Like any collaborative art, I can see where it would be beneficial to branch out and make connections with different brands and the perfumers who work for them, as you never know when you will need to call upon their expertise to assist you in the future. As a musician, it has been very useful to know “the scene” locally and have good relations with the many local establishments and promoters that book us for gigs! I am most intrigued by the lactonic nature of this fragrance. I can’t say I have anything in my collection that would in any way resemble Insignia. Should I win, this would be my first Thameen London fragrance. Thanks for the generous draw.

  • Bartholomew Diaz says:

Hi all this fragrance sounds very special and judging by Stevens review i would even say it sounds sensational. What appeals to me about this fragrance from Stevens review is the presentation. Thameen has a simple yet elegant presentation that I fully appreciate!
And what appeals to me about Chris Ching’s introduction was what he said about the company mantra, “we create for today, thinking of tomorrow”….to me it’s the perfect synchronicity between
introspective and outwardly forward, producing a luminous harmony to light the way forward.
My favorite offering from the house is Carved Oud. It may be the safest creation they offer In terms of versatility and mass appeal but I absolutely love it!
That said I’m excited to see what the future holds for fans of the house. Of course, I hope that I will be the lucky winner of such a lavish treat but if not I’m sure whoever is the lucky winner they will indeed cherish this fragrance as would any of us!

  • Chong speaks very highly of the perfumer and trusts her to make a winner so we shall see. Steven gives another detailed but concise review of the scent, always appreciated. Thanks for the opportunity – Southern CA here.

  • IvanVelikov says:

I care for Christopher Chong recognition of Alexandra Carlin, it’s quite important for every young artist to be recognized, and appreciated.
Thameen London i relate to Royalties , and maybe because I’m a tailor, the way they dress.
From Insignia i’m expecting regal quality , and craftsmanship. The balance between the whiskey accord, the fig and woods i find stylish.
I also really like how Christopher Chong is respecting British perfumery, traditions and the legacy of Thameen.
I’d wear Insignia with elegant tailor made , Single Breasted blazer, deep hue and fine stripe detail, cut in a drop 7, Dark Blue Flannel Stripe Two Piece Wool Suit
My favorite Thameen fragrance is Carved Oud
Thank you Michelyn, Steven, Christopher Chong, and Twisted Lily

  • I enjoyed reading Christopher Chong’s thoughts on Thameen London Insignia and working with Alexandra Carlin. This qoute struck me: “She has an extremely rare talent that takes time to develop – it is a poetic investigation into perfumery that makes her look beyond the raw materials in which she digs deep into the soul of the story and ingredients. Alex makes the world see things that we could never imagine with her imagination.” Steven’s video helped me better understand this perfume’s complex notes list; boozy whisky, a minty accord, and lactonic textures are a striking, unusual combination that Steven called “enchanting”. Would love to try it.

I’m in the USA. I haven’t tried any Thameen London fragrances.

  • Another great review by Steven and I liked the interview of Chris by Michelyn. I haven’t sampled this house yet even tho I’ve seen other reviews by Steven on the fragrances he mentioned in the review. Looking forward to getting my nose on this scent mainly for the boozy orange accord’s.

  • I’ll start with a few small clarifications of geranium, and bay leaf
☆ Both could go “minty” , but in a different way.
☆ The smell could vary a lot, for the most part the aroma of rose geranium is like old rose blended with a touch of citrus, spice, green herbs and a tiny hint of resin.
☆ The smell of bay leaf depends very much on the variety, and if it’s a dried or fresh leaves we’re taking about . The more “minty” , in the peppermint way , are the crushed leaves from the California bay tree .
Steven take on Thameen London Insignia instantly reminded me of making and eating Hatteras Fig and Whiskey Cake ( why not some rose water in it?) , and drinking Mint Orange Lemonade.
I like how Christopher Chong made Insignia honoring British perfumery traditions ,and holds dear Alexandra Carlin. She’s not a rookie of course, but it’s always nice to receive genuine praises from such a name in the fragrance industry, like Christopher Chong.
I’m not yet familiar with Thameen London fragrances
Appreciate the review, and the giveaway campaign

Redolessence reviews are always thorough and very informative.

  • Oh boy, I am a huge fan of Thameen London, being Carved Oud my favorite one yet. I loved both, Christopher’s introduction and Steven review of this intriguing fragrance Insignia.
I think that I like the most about the perfume is the brightness of the opening and the boozy accords it has. Also I love that it has sandalwood, it surely must be a great perfume.
I hope I win this one.

  • I enjoyed reading Christopher Chong’s views on Alex as a perfumer and has me excited for whats in store. Steven did an incredible job explaining the dry down over time, and im really interested to see the uniqueness that steven describes with the dark, light, and luminousness. From TX, USA.

  • Michael Prince says:

I loved Steven’s Review of Thameen London Insignia and Michelyn’s Introduction of artistic director Christopher Chong. I’ve heard so many great things about Christopher Chong and his vision and creative thinking and storytelling for Thameen London and their creations. Steven really loves this creative and unique fragrance with so many different facets from the spicy whiskey accord, the freshness of the orange, geranium, and rose, along with lactonic milky fig accord that go together perfectly in harmony. My favorite from the brand is Carved Oud. I am from the USA.

  • I’m really impressed with Chong’s legacy and the strides he continues to make as a leader. I’m really excited by this fragrance as it sounds like the perfect summer scent that combines so many of my favorite accords such as orange, fig, and sandalwood! Steven’s review is fantastic and really explained why this fragrance is so unique.

  • LightOfJoy says:

Thank you for this lovely review, Steven! I appreciated the fact that you mentioned it can be worn all year long, which is very nice with a special perfume like this. I’m certainly interested in the brightness and minty facets you mentioned.

Christopher Chong is very enthused to be working with Alexandra Carlin, who sounds to be a very talented perfumer.

I would love to enter this drawing, and I’m in Texas, USA. Thank you for holding this very generous drawing of Thameen’s Insignia.

  • Absolutely awesome video review by Steven of Thameen London Insignia. I enjoyed Steven saying it’s very unique and mysterious. He knows his notes and how notes work together. I have yet to try any fragrance from the brand but would love to have Insignia in my collection. Christopher Chongs introduction about creating fragrances with combining story telling was fascinating. Thank you for such a wonderful giveaway. Greetings from USA.

  • The only Thameen London I’ve smelled is Carved Oud , last week to be precise , and it’s just great. To my knowledge the house most popular fragrance , at least on social media . Of course I know Christopher Chong for his previous work with Amouage.

“but did you know that Insignia was the first fragrance under Christopher Chong’s residency?”

Maybe I somehow misinterpreted the Fanfare article from Karl Topham, but I was under the impression Fanfare, and not Insignia was the very first fragrance Christopher Chong and Thameen worked on together .
Insignia feels so upscale , and refined. I like the sandalwood, the rose , fig and the playful whiskey accord.
Judging by Christopher Chong work with Amouage, his level of respect for Alexandra Carlin creativity, and affirmed by Steven, sure enough Insignia is special , I’m thrilled
    Thanks for the draw

  • wallygator88 says:

Thanks for the great review Steven! I think it speaks a lot about Christopher Chong when he says about Alexandra Carlin – “I spotted a unique artistic spirit in her very early on, which needed to be nurtured carefully, rather than fast tracked with many perfume wins.”

Insignia sounds like like a really wonderful fragrance for the upcoming summer. I love the opening that is milky fig, boozy, bright citrus and spices. The use of rose and geranium to create a minty, watery floral quality, leading into a base that is woody and leathery. I can totally see this being a cooler weather scent as well.

    Cheers from WI, USA

  • One of the reasons why Insignia is so appealing to me , is because of Christopher Chong coming to Thameen, and changing the brand with his creative genius.
The fragrance falls into the elegant woody , and leather category, and the fig and whiskey are making it more suave . The talanted perfumer Alexandra Carlin i know because of Velvet Tonka from BDK.
I have no experience with Thameen
    Exciting giveaway, USA
    Regards

  • My younger cousin bought Thameen sample set, and the extra samples from Twisted Lily, and since I’ve smelled Insignia, I have to say it’s a stunning , and like Steven said quite complex composition.
Starts citrusy, boozy and rosy , then bitter orange shows up , and then the fig , sandalwood and vetiver.
Insignia is exquisite, dark, fruity , boozy and aromatic. Unlike Steven there not much leather, but I’m convinced there’s incense, especially in the dry down .
Regal aroma , Alexandra Carlin made a symbol for elegance of British aristocracy.
Even though I’m a huge Amouage fan , I’m more than happy to know that Christopher Chong is honoring Thameen heritage, and not trying to turn the brand in something like Amouage II.
He slightly confused me a bit with this claim

“We collaborated over 10 years ago with a white floral fragrance which has become a best seller for the previous brand I worked for.”
Of course he’s talking about Honour Woman , but
Alexandra Carlin also made Beloved Man …
Royal Sapphire is my favorite Thameen fragrance
I’ll treat myself now with Whisky Fig Jam cocktail now, cheers, and thank you for the opportunity

I like Christopher Chong’s mantra, “We create for today, thinking of tomorrow.” I also have an appreciation on how he describes, the perfumer, Alexandra Carlin’s gift, as it relates to perfumery, “it is a poetic investigation into perfumery that makes her look beyond the raw materials in which she digs deep into the soul of the story and ingredients. Alex makes the world see things that we could never imagine with her imagination.”…beautifully stated.

Steven’s review was very thorough. He has developed a sense of anticipation for me via his very descriptive journey that this fragrance takes one on. Indeed, this is a unique fragrance but seems to be calling my name via it’s notes 🙂

Steven always paints a vivid picture. Sounds like Christopher is bringing a touch of innovation to thameen. this would be a great addition to my budding wardrobe

  • sephrenia300 says:

Lovely intro and video! What appealed to me about Christopher’s introduction was how she describes the perfumer Alexandria Carlin as supremely talented in her ability to engage in “a poetic investigation into perfumery” that allows her to “dig deep into the soul of the story and ingredients”. I love perfumes that really tell a story and Christopher’s description makes me sure that Insignia is just that!

What appealed to me about Steven’s review was how he described how strong the contrasts are in the fragrance from the very beginning, with bright and spicy playing off each other in turns and bringing out the best in each other. I love perfumes full of strong contrasts so I think Insigina is going to be very interesting to me

I live in the U.S. My favorite from the brand is Royal Sapphire!
