Food, just like fragrances, is personal. Many of us come from different parts of the world, but it is safe to say the comforting feeling of baking is universal. We may have other recipes we find satisfying, often tied to feel good memories of our childhood or recreating recipes our grandmothers and mothers made for us. When feeling down or needing comfort, I frequently reach for fragrances that remind me of those. The texture of fresh dough, the soft whiffs of flour in the air, and finally, the aroma of the buttery sweet in the oven about to brown is so satisfying that I’m salivating as I write this. The first time I ever smelled Teo Cabanel Encore, I experienced that overwhelming sense of peace that immediately took my mind to the first few times I tried my hand at baking, which surprisingly turned out a success. I love the whole experience from the beginning to the end. It always begins with a specific craving you can’t quite get out of your head, followed by the visualization of the ingredients you will need to make this fancy come to life, and finally, the process itself, the messy but beautiful sensation of baking. Teo Cabanel Encore was created to make you feel good, tapping into that exact memory for me, a greatly satisfying sense of a warm carrot cake with a side of an aromatic chai latte.

Baking, like fragrances, brings out the inherent joy within us, even on the darkest days. Both are a language of love, a way of communicating without verbalizing it, by simply being. It is profoundly comforting and perhaps why so many people enjoy it as a hobby or therapy. It seems to trigger the same feel-good emotions in us as the fragrances we often find addictive, calming, and comforting. I dip my hand into a bowl of flour to begin making a cake, and suddenly my thoughts slow down, and I begin to unwind. I turn on some soothing music, and I feel at home. Baking is highly sensory and therapeutic for me. It’s often on a chilly fall or winter day when I want to tap into the grounding sensation of floured-covered dough between my fingers. I’m mixing the boozy, almost bitter aroma of the vanilla essence into the batter and, finally, sneaking a creamy taste of the frosting being whipped up. While the opening of Teo Cabanel Encore greets you with that first flavor of carrots and a brightness mixed in with the peach, the heart is served with a hefty dose of nutty goodness. As if you switched up the flour for an almond one for that deeper, earthy flavor. The buttery smooth iris in the heart is thick and lactonic, deeply sensual, and warm. Iris always brings the necessary depth with it and amplifies the overall sensation. And finally, the woodsy base of sandalwood can always make any fragrance more round and complete.
Soothing and addictive; I can’t quite get enough of it. Created as a “feel good” fragrance, by Maelstrom perfumer Maria Schnirer this is a beautiful spin on the gourmand we haven’t seen before. Yes, we have many iris fragrances that give off that carrot-like rooty feeling, but in this blend, the lactonic Chai latte facet drives it home for me. Teo Cabanel Encore is like a soft, warm blanket you want to wrap around yourself.

Always original and fun, Teo Cabanel’s creations tap into the most cherished memories we can relate to in ways personal to us and our pasts. Encore, similar to Teo Cabanel’s Oh La La, which I have written about earlier this year, embodies the connection of flavors and scents to me seamlessly. My enthusiasm for food and fragrances, which are highly intertwined, is highly contagious, and I often get carried away talking about both. What follows is usually a heightened curiosity to try more perfumes and a peaked appetite. Whenever that craving for something beautifully familiar and soothing becomes too loud to ignore, I put on Teo Cabanel’s Encore and whip up the cake. Sometimes we all need an excuse to slow down. To pause. To breathe.
