Michael Salazar is the perfumer for Tempus Vitae® Café du Jour. I reached out to him on to share his creative process to introduce Steven’s video-Michelyn

Michael Salazar perfumer

Café du Jour was an interesting composition to create. I was going for a unique take on coffee and didn’t want your typical sweet and spicy coffee fragrance, focusing primarily on a nutty and creamy characteristic. Black Currant gives a tangy feel with a dark fruitiness that compliments the nutty notes. This fragrance has depth, complexity, and character not seen often in your mainstream coffee compositions.  I created unique Heliotrope, Caramel and Milk Foam Accords”. – Michael Salazar

Notes: Turkish, Greek, Arabic Coffee, Nutty Notes, Tamanu Oil, Black Currant, Ylang-Ylang, Lavender, Heliotrope Accord, Pink Peppercorn, Butter CO2, Milk Foam Accord, Tonka Bean, Oakwood, Guaiacwood, Siam Benzoin, Portuguese Labdanum, Caramel Accord, Indian Davana, Birch Tar, Musk

  • Great brief by Michael and review by Steven of what I’m gathering is a tangy, cardamom-ed coffee with musky black currant atop a warm woody barely milky base– sounds incredible, and complex like a great Ethiopian or Sumatran coffee! From the US 🙂

  • Ooh a fruitier take on coffee sounds quite intriguing. I used to have a small bottle of tamanu oil and it had a very unique, nutty fragrance that I can imagine goes quite well with coffee. I also like the art used; the whole presentation is very cool! I appreciate how Steven described the first twenty minutes or so of this fragrance as being a bit intense, but then settling down to be quite smooth. Admittedly, I tend to give up on fragrances rather quickly sometimes, so it’s helpful to know in advance whether or not they will mellow. I am from New England, USA.

  • Michael Bullock says:

I want to win this fragrance because it has some of my favorite notes and it’s my type of fragrance. GOD BLESS

  • USA here. I’m a fan of coffee and amber fragrances so this sounds great from the sound of the review and introduction. Beast mode with 10+ hours? Sign me up!

  • Ramses Perez says:

I’m a coffee lover so as soon as I saw this, I ran to watch the video. I appreciate Michael took his time and created a different coffee fragrance more focused on the nutty and creamy characteristics, after all, there are millions of coffee fragrances in existence. Even the packaging and color of the juice really tells you how deep and rich the scent is. I’m glad it’s just an unique take on coffee and doesn’t smell like anything else. I’m located in the USA.

  • Rachel Huggins says:

I love coffee fragrances and can’t wait to give this a try. It sounds great and right up my alley.

  • Marman16881 says:

From USA. I love a good coffee scent. Steven’s description of the fragrance actually had me back in Germany drinking coffee with relatives in a cafe on one of the tiled paths. Stephen always brings his A game. Present all the notes, gave his assessment and 10+ hours. AMAZING!

  • Scentofme says:

Coffee is my favourite drink during the day and I love the smell of it. It is a difficult task to create a realistic coffee based fragrance and I hope that I will like this one by Tempus Vitae. I like how Café du Jour is described as not a mainstream coffee composition, but rather has individual character, depth and complexity. I live in EU.

  • Scentorian18 says:

The formula sounds very very interesting. The notes are intriguing. Would love to try this fragrance either way.

  • KWright213 says:

Very interesting. I do like coffee scents. The article and the YT video has me very intrigue.

  • Courtney Hall says:

I’m excited to get the chance to smell this one. The scent of coffee brewing has always been so comforting to me. I’ve traveled all over and the local coffee is always a first stop. My goodness the thought of being able to wear a fragrance that not only is coffee scented but also a bit of the world traveler memories held within also. Love the idea!

  • USA fragrance lover here! I appreciate a creative approach and fruity + spicy notes as redolesence mentioned. Michael looks like the kinda guy who makes a good scent and his description of it has me very interested! Excited to see the results of the giveaway!

  • LeonardFlores says:

Wow, this is the coffee fragrance review I’ve been waiting for! As a coffee lover, I’m so intrigued by Cafe du Jour. Your description of the “spicy coffee accord” with cardamom and the “photorealistic” coffee aroma has me hooked. I also appreciate your honesty about the black currant note. It’s good to know what to expect.

  • carrie_earle says:

Steven’s review was fantastic, as always. Although I do love the sweeter latte type coffee scents the slightly creamy, spicy description of Cafe du Jour sounds very appealing. Michael’s direction of a non-typical coffee scent with nutty and tangy profile is interesting. I like that he created 3 unique accords for this scent.

It’s fascinating to hear the perfumer’s perspective! Michael Salazar’s approach to creating a “nutty and creamy” coffee fragrance with unique accords is quite intriguing. It seems he successfully achieved his goal of avoiding the typical sweet and spicy coffee clichés, opting for a more complex and nuanced composition. The mention of black currant adding a “tangy feel” is interesting, as it’s not a common note in coffee fragrances. It seems like he aimed for a sophisticated and layered scent, which is commendable.

I enjoyed Steven review and Perfumers views. Steven described the different types of Coffee and Cardamom used to create a spicy coffee fragrance. As a coffee lover this sounds like something right up my street. Thanks a million from the UK

Thanks a lot from the UK

  • The intro got me interested with the inclusion of the black current note. The video promised and enchanting coffee aroma. US

  • ThatMulattoDude says:

I definitely enjoy me a good cup of coffee; one of the many God’s gifts to mankind. I admire Mr. Salazar approaching this offering with a different take than the usual sweet, sugary coffee. The presence of black currant is interesting. The presentation is simple, yet elegant. Thank you for the opportunity to win this travel spray. Many blessings from Virginia, USA!

  • Viktoriia says:

Would love to try coffee fragrances. Good luck to all the participants. Toronto.

  • AromaDulce73 says:

I love coffee a good note in a fragrance and I love Michael Salazars creations from his brand Aroma de Salazar.

Michael mentioned a milk foam accord which I never heard of before. I really like some of the other notes like caramel, tonka bean and guaiacwood.

Steven talks about the presentation and yes it is beautiful. Off the top Steven says you get that coffee and black currant which I’m not sure how that will work for me. Steven continues to say that it does settle after a few minutes and transforms into a beautiful dry down.

Definitely would like to get my nose on this one.

  • Regis Monkton says:

I’d like to try Café du Jour. I can like coffee fragrances, and this one intrigues me the most out of all of them. I’m interested in the nutty and creamy aspects of coffee. I like black currant in fragrances (e.g. Amouage “Imitation Woman”), and I’d like to see how it pairs with the coffee note. I’m also interested to see what the accords are like for Heliotrope, Caramel and Milk Foam. I live in MD, USA.

  • Sounds like a very interesting blend of notes. The fruitiness with the creamy froth and the cardamom espresso with the florals. I’m definitely game to try this!! I’m located in the USA.

  • An interesting take on coffee fragrances which tend to lean to sweetened gourmands. The black current and lavender add a sophisticated fruity and floral note. The multi variant wood base provides grounding notes. The heliotrope note is fascinating. I would not have thought to pair them and I’m intrigued. Steven’s description of the different varieties of coffee and spice notes was interesting. MD, USA

  • I really enjoyed Steven’s review and Michael Salazar’s introduction to Café du Jour. The focus on a nutty, creamy coffee scent with the addition of black currant and unique accords like milk foam and heliotrope sounds like a truly complex and distinctive fragrance. It’s refreshing to see such depth in a coffee fragrance! I’m from Sweden.

  • Salazar’s comments about composing Café du Jour highlight one of the challenges with coffee fragrances—too sweet and spicy, not enough actual coffee scent. Going for a “nutty and creamy characteristic” captures the smell of a cafe drink and tangy fruit notes remind me of the acidity inherent in light roasted pour-over. Steven’s video got to show off this fragrance’s tremendous packaging. “If you like coffee, I think you have to try this one.” The black currant sounds quite expressive in the opening and “a very photorealistic coffee” is what I’ve wanted to try for a long time. Very intriguing unique coffee fragrance.

    I’m in the USA.

This is a really interesting perspective on the fragrance! I appreciate how you highlight the perfumer’s intention to create a unique and complex coffee scent that moves away from the typical sweet and gourmand profiles. The focus on nutty and creamy aspects, along with the unexpected addition of black currant for a tangy twist, sounds intriguing. It seems like a fragrance that invites you to explore its different facets and discover its hidden depths.

The mention of the custom accords for heliotrope, caramel, and milk foam further emphasizes the perfumer’s dedication to crafting a nuanced and sophisticated fragrance. It makes me curious to experience how these accords interact with the other notes and contribute to the overall olfactory experience.

Overall, it seems like a fragrance that challenges expectations and offers a fresh perspective on coffee in perfumery. It would be fascinating to see how this translates into the actual scent and how it unfolds on the skin.
Im so amaze to hear the perfumer’s vision of a unique, nutty, and creamy coffee fragrance. The addition of black currant for a tangy twist sounds intriguing, and the custom accords suggest a complex and nuanced scent. I’m eager to experience this unusual take on coffee.

Re this fragrance, the presentation is quite beautiful. I love the progression of this fragrance. The idea of pairing coffee with resins, spice and blackcurrant is really different.

    Cheers from WI, USA

  • foreverscents says:

I had to give up coffee, but I still adore the smell of it. Both Michael’s introduction and Steven’s video review focused on the unique aspects of Café du Jour. The black currant note certainly contributes to this uniqueness. I love the walnut smell of Tamanu oil, so I am intrigued to see how that combines with the lavender. I love fragrances that have beast-mode power, so this fragrance will surely satisfy me.
    I live in the USA.

  • Froaderick says:

    Coffee and spice and everything nice! The nose of black currant is interesting and will help this one stand int out from other coffee-centric fragrances. And it’s nice it doesn’t smell like a Starbucks as Steven said lol. Plus it’s great to see Michael chosen as the perfumer as he ventures deeper into the craft of fragrances. Sounds warm, cozy and inviting with just a hint of edginess. Sounds amazing! Cheers from OH, USA! ;

  • Tracy Wilson says:

Thank you so much for creating what sounds like a beautifully complex fragrance!

  • Cafe du Jour sounds amazing, especially as a coffee lover. I love how Michael aimed to create a unique coffee fragrance focused on nutty and creamy aspects. I was glad to hear Steven say it doesn’t smell like a Starbucks coffee drink. The black currant coming off as musky in the opening sounds intriguing. Steven’s description of Cafe du Jour evoking being outside on a warm, sunny day and enjoying a coffee is something I’d love to experience. I would love to own a bottle!

Thank you for your review, Steven, and thank you to Tempus Vitae for the generous giveaway. I am located in the USA.

  • libangeddy says:

Oh this is interesting I love when perfumers take a profile that is typically gourmandish and spin it on its head like this. I’m very particular about coffee scents and the video mentioned it not being sweet which gave me the green light to carry on with my interest. And Michael mentioned essentially the same thing so I can’t help but be hype about this! I live in the USA

  • The blackcurrant sounds interesting in this combination. Milk foam is something I haven’t seen before in fragrance. Great packaging. I love that it’s Turkish coffee. I’d love to try this unique coffee fragrance. Thanks for the great review. USA.
