For Chris Martin, founder and creative director of Statik Olfactive, fragrance is not an accessory—it’s a form of orientation. In Statik Olfactive Into The Wild, he invites us to cross a threshold few modern perfumes attempt: to stand still in a place that is vast, quiet, and real. Launched in 2023, Statik Olfactive is shaped by Martin’s instinct for atmosphere, memory, and material. Into The Wild is his most intimate work yet. It doesn’t speak in symbols or metaphors. It is direct. It is pine, smoke, ozone. The feeling of being very small in a vast, living world.

The brief is personal. For Martin, the forest is not a poetic device but a place remembered with precision—his native Pennsylvania, its layered scents changing with altitude, season, and time of day. As creative director, he steers Into The Wild with clarity: this is not the fantasy of the outdoors, it is its breath. Its textures. Its emotional terrain.

The fragrance itself has been composed by the renowned perfumer Darren Alan of Darren Alan Perfumes, whose technical execution brings Martin’s vision to life. Known for his meticulous approach to natural materials, Alan balances restraint and depth throughout the structure, letting the environment emerge note by note.

Statik Olfactive Into The Wild opens with a rush of altitude. Ozone, Canadian black spruce, and both Spanish and Indian cypress come together in a way that is not sharp, but clear. A log cabin smoke accord threads beneath it all—not dramatic, but familiar. The kind of woodsmoke you carry home in your clothing after hours by a dying fire. It’s intimate. It stays with you.

In the heart, Martin’s sense of movement continues. Fern accord, green leaf, and Indian galbanum convey depth and foliage. There is no embellishment. Egyptian violet leaf absolute adds steel and air, while wild honeysuckle—never sweet—lends a pale brightness, like light through canopy. This is not a green perfume in the traditional sense. It’s verdant, yes, but dense. Breathing, not blooming.

The base settles slowly. Texas cedarwood and Indonesian agarwood form a clean, fibrous spine. Indian patchouli, French castoreum, and civet absolute (ethically sourced) introduce warmth and quiet animalic hum—never overpowering, but grounding. A final touch of French oakmoss absolute completes the architecture, mossy and mineral like lichen on rock. The composition is over 76% natural, and it shows. You feel the materials on skin, and how they shift with your body’s own rhythm.

Martin doesn’t tell you what to feel. He simply sets the environment and lets you enter it. There’s confidence in that silence. Statik Olfactive Into The Wild doesn’t push to be noticed, but it’s impossible to ignore once you wear it. The structure is slow, deliberate, and emotional—not in the sense of sentimentality, but of memory: things recalled by scent, the weight of air before a storm, the damp cold of lichen, the comfort of solitude.

Even the name—Into The Wild—feels less like a title than an instruction. It doesn’t promise an escape. It offers a return. This is where Chris Martin’s strength lies—not just in direction, but in sensory clarity. He understands how scent can shape inner space. That the quiet strength of the forest is not loudness, but presence. That stillness can be worn. Into The Wild is his signature, not just as founder, but as a storyteller. And in Alan’s skilled hands, that vision becomes skin-scented topography—something felt more than analyzed.

There is no forced duality here. No “urban versus natural”, no “nostalgia versus modernity”. Just breath, bark, air. The wilderness interpreted with honesty. With Into The Wild, Statik Olfactive carves a space for those who seek not distraction, but return. This is fragrance as atmosphere. As orientation. A clearing in the trees.

Don’t be afraid of green fragrances, they may surprise you! I wasn’t always the biggest fan of piney/overly green fragrances but with time I have learned to love them. You shouldn’t be surprised with the name of this fragrance shag you’re getting into, and that it’s the wild. Green, forest, watery notes galore to be enjoyed. This would definitely be a scent you must try before you buy and not blind buy safe but for those who do love it, they’re gonna love it endlessly. I’m located in the USA.

  • I went to the perfumer’s website to purchase their 3 ml sample because I am sold on Log Cabin Smoke Accord.

There’s nothing more enjoyable than campfire smoke clinging to your flannel shirt after a weekend in the wilderness. The warm texture of the flannel, the cool night temperature, and the simple memory of it all.

The description of the notes and accords sound so perfect. Knowing Mr. Alan’s other work, I can’t wait to smell this!

  • Karl’s vivid description of Into The Wild as a sensory journey through a forest, with its precise evocation of pine, smoke, and ozone, sparked my interest. The emphasis on authenticity and the fragrance’s ability to feel like a return to nature, rather than a mere escape, resonates deeply. I live in Poland, EU.

what a great article and photos to describe this scent. I will be buying a sample of this scent. i am very much intrigued by the notes.

  • I would love to win this perfume because I love photorealistic perfumes that evoke the wilderness. After reading Karl’s article, I think this perfume could be perfect for me, especially when he says: “The wilderness interpreted with honesty” because it’s important that it’s sincere because there are so-called natural perfumes that smell artificial and synthetic. I live in France, EU

i’m such a sucker for fern notes… and i’m intrigued by karl’s mention that this fragrance is over three quarters natural. i’m not familiar with the natural-synthetic composition of the fragrances i currently use, so i’m curious to see how all the natural accords meld together in this “sensory clarity”

thanks for the review! from usa

Two of my absolutely favorite smells are the fragrant green of pine and campfire smoke. Together they spark such wholesome, happy memories. Kentucky USA

  • Into The Wild sounds like the outdoor adventure everyone needs in their life!! Love the high concentration of naturals utilized to compose this profile. “Breathing not blooming” is such a beautiful phrase in order to convey the olfactory experience. I live in Chicago but love spending time in the northwoods of Wisconsin.

  • Earthy woody scents are always so interesting yo me. The Wild sounds like a good name for this fragrance. Usa

  • What I love is how this fragrance avoids clichés—it’s not about ‘escaping’ to the wild, but returning to something ancient and honest, like the memory of solitude pressed into tree bark. It’s rare to find a perfume that feels less like a scent and more like a place you’ve known forever! Great job!

  • I kind of love the idea of a very direct, set the scene, type of fragrance that then just allows you to experience, and 8n this case, experience the Pennsylvania (maybe) forests. In Maryland

I’m always intrigued by a forest scent, and this one especially, with Karl’s lovely description. I haven’t tried any Statik Olfactive perfumes, but its so interesting and quite impressive that Darren ‘s fragrances are comprised of mostly natural materials and inspired by the scents of nature like the Into The Wild.
The fragrance combine a variety of notes, but what sparked my interest is the wilderness that is captured into these blends creating a rich, multi-layered scent profile, the forest atmosphere of the pine, smoke, ozone and oakmoss. I can see myself in the forest in the picture, feeling the materials on air, and connected with them with my own being. My nose is looking forward to the experience. Thanks for the opportunity.

  • Although I have a deep and personal appreciation for nearly every fragrance genre by now, just like Chris, verdant foresty fragrances are where my heart lies. It’s that simple. Not that surprising considering I grew up just a few clicks north of Pennsylvania on the other side of Lake Erie where conifers dominate the winter air and buttery honeysuckle fumes linger in the spring. But I’m also a life-long outdoorsman, so perfumes that evoke the forest speak to my soul. Very intriqued by the sound of Darren’s woodsmoke accord, as well as the overall density of Into the Wild, since that would certainly describe the atmosphere in the deep vallies next to my home. And he even used real civet absolute! Yeah, Darren’s a brilliant perfumer so I have the utmost convidence in his skill. Given his classical styling, I have no doubt that this is another gem. In fact, there’s no question that I’ll be getting a sample of this one because it could very well be my favourite fragrance featured this year. Doesn’t hurt that I adore the new bottle design with the golden cap either. To Chris and all my fellow foliage lovers…may the forest be with you. From Canada.
