State of Mind Aesthetic Turbulence is a fragrance that embodies the pursuit of perfection and harmony. With the concept created by Catherine Laskine-Balandina this bold spicy floral scent is the epitome of extravagance composed by perfumer Karine Dubreuil-Sereni. Inspired by the iconic character of Jay Gatsby it is a kind of olfactory incarnation of Gatsby’s ideal of success and beauty. It enchants and fascinates your sense of smell with its audacity and bold use of immortelle. Just like Gatsby, this fragrance strives for perfection in every aspect, from its scent to its longevity. It captures the spirit of the Roaring Twenties with its flacon the embodiment of Art Deco. With the Oolong Tea note capturing the feel of new worlds appearing in the west as cultures start to be further explored.

Pablo Picasso seated at Café de Flore general use

The choice of name for State of Mind Aesthetic Turbulence, instantly made me think of another café society, that of the surrealists and writers of Paris in the 1930’s, especially a young Swiss artist named Meret Oppenheim, who with a stroke of creative genius, she transformed a simple teacup, saucer, and spoon into a captivating masterpiece that would become an iconic symbol of surrealism. Creating her own Aesthetic Turbulence. Oppenheim’s journey began in the vibrant city of Paris, where she found herself in the company of artistic luminaries such as Pablo Picasso and his enchanting new lover, Dora Maar. The trio gathered at the renowned Café de Flore, a haven for creative minds and a breeding ground for inspiration. It was within these walls that Oppenheim’s imagination took flight. As the conversation flowed, Picasso’s eyes fell upon Oppenheim’s bracelet, a striking creation she had designed for the visionary fashion icon Elsa Schiaparelli. Adorned with ocelot fur, the bracelet exuded a sense of daring elegance. Picasso, ever the provocateur, remarked that anything could be covered in fur. Seizing the opportunity to inject a touch of whimsy into the moment, Oppenheim playfully responded, “Even this plate and this cup here.” The words hung in the air, sparking a mischievous glimmer in Oppenheim’s eyes. In a playful twist of fate, she found herself yearning for a little more fur to embrace her teacup, which had grown cold. With a light-hearted request, she asked the waiter for “un peu plus de fourrure” — a little more fur.

Oppenheim whisked herself to a department store fueled by her newfound inspiration. With meticulous care, she enrobed the teacup, saucer, and spoon in the opulent pelt of a Chinese gazelle. The cream-and-tan hues of the fur flow harmoniously; creating a satisfying contrast that captivates the eye. Word of Oppenheim’s creation spread like wildfire, reaching the ears of André Breton, the visionary founder of surrealism. Enchanted by the audacity and ingenuity of her artwork, he recognized its profound significance. Here was a sculpture that transcended the boundaries of convention, a testament to the power of imagination and the boundless possibilities of art. Meret Oppenheim’s teacup, saucer, and spoon wrapped in the delicate embrace of a gazelle’s fur became an emblem of surrealism, her masterpiece of aesthetic turbulence.

State of Mind Aesthetic Turbulence is a fragrance that takes you on a sensory journey, as it opens you experience the sweet orange and soft savoury green aromatics with herbal undertones, its subtly complex with rich floral notes intertwined with hints of herbal greens and dark tones of black teas. As the jammy orange and oolong tea aromas play off each other, a twist begins to unfold. This Aesthetic Turbulence is beautifully surreal; with the colour of the flacon giving you a hint at the further direction this will take us. The addition of sweet red pepper adds a vibrant surreal touch, offering a crunchy sweetness that allows the darker notes to flicker through from the base. Hints of earthy patchouli and whispers of jasmine soften the edges, while the teas’ aromas seep into the delicate petals pearl of floral teas. Immortelle takes centre stage, bringing a deep, burnt sugar sweetness that perfectly complements the herbal spices. It’s a luxurious blend that whispers of warm skin and furs, adding an almost animalic facet to the fragrance.

Soft smoky oolong tea notes gracefully intertwine with the rich immortelle, creating a symphony of scents that is both captivating and alluring. The honeyed hay and tobacco facets add a touch of mystery, while the dark spiced sweetness lingers on your skin, reminiscent of the quiet intensity of honey. The initial orange jammyness transforms into a softly figgy-spiced sweetness, with just a hint of biscuit, as the fragrance settles into its dry down. As the scent lingers on your skin, this rich figgy immortelle sweetness and a subtle smoky oolong tea aroma remain, like the haunting scent of tea’s steam lingering in the air, evoking new dreams and adventures. Immortelle as a material is an experience that changes your perception of the world, its very complex and conflictive. Experiencing it here expands your senses, much like gazing at a captivating piece of art. State of Mind Aesthetic Turbulence opens your mind to new possibilities, inviting you to explore the boundless world of scents and smells.

Notes: Top: Oolong Tea, Mandarin, Green Tea Pearls, Bergamot, Heart: Jasmine, Immortelle, Red Pepper, Base: Licorice, Labdanum

What a classic. Teas, citrus, pepper, and amber. I imagine a cup of earl grey with honey on a California winter morning. Bare feet on a covered front porch surrounded by a quiet Broward County orange grove in 1949. A fun and approachable kind of elegance.

Every time I see a giveaway for a State of Mind fragrance on Ça Fleure Bon my heart skips a beat. Those smoky tea notes dancing with the immortelle, herbal greens and rich florals really catches my attention and makes me so infatuated immediately. Turbulence really appears to be a perfect fragrance for me. I love it already.

  • O my love this review by Wearescentient whom I follow and very pleased to see featured here. Also very lovely to learn about my almost namesake Meret Oppenheim Surrealistic art and.. of course State of Mind. I’m not familiar with this brand but love their esthetics and the fragrance sounds eccentric as well. Immortelle and licorice are some of my favourite notes in fragrance so this sounds up my alley. I am a fan of the tea note. Reading here that it’s soft and smokey with immortelle just makes me want to try it. The tobacco and honey sweetness will be what makes this image of a Parisian tea place surreal. Thank you for the review.

Thank you, J Wearescentient, for your amazing review! First of all, I have to say I have been blown away by the name of the brand and their branding including the breathtaking Art Deco flacons, since I got to encounter State of Mind’s Open Mind on here. The way Open Mind is one of the most beautiful blues I have ever seen, Aesthetic Turbulence is the most captivating old school reds for me. So I am really grateful for the visual aspects of the house’s creations. Even before smelling the perfume, I feel like I am taken to another level of artistry. The story of Meret Oppenheim’s endless creativity and her indeed most surreal take on art, captivate me even further. I love a good dose of outside-the-box thinking so her teacup, saucer and teaspoon covered in gazelle’s pelt enchant me to the point of regretting I was not an adult in Paris in the 1930s… Upon reading about the notes and their interplay, it somehow becomes obvious to me that with the idea of a masterpiece of perfumery, one needs to look no further. I am wowed. True-to-life tea aromas, immortelle, tobacco, jasmine, red pepper – yes, please! This truly sounds like a ‘luxurious blend that whispers of warm skin and furs, adding an almost animalic facet to the fragrance.’ I am grateful for the read, for the thought behind it and for the opportunity to befriend this outrageous beauty. I am in the EU

  • All of the notes sound delicious to me: oolong and green tea, licorice, mandarin with a dash of red pepper. I also enjoyed reading about Meret Oppenheim. Thanks for the wonderful review and draw. Mich

  • I particularly loved the story about Oppenheim, Picasso and the “un peu plus de fourrure”…artists were just something else back then!
The fragrance itself sounds glorious: very cozy from the blend of oolong and citrus, but also sparkly due to the pepper and jasmine. As far as the bottle goes…what could I say? It looks like an absolutely masterpiece and makes me wanna smell Aesthetic Turbulence even more.

  • I’m new to State of Mind, and I’m intrigued now. Considering the super stressful times we’re living in at the moment , Aesthetic Turbulence is like a mental getaway trip . Who doesn’t want to have a carefree day , relaxing and drinking tea in Cafe de Flore ? No one…
I also like the complexity of the fragrance, and how different the opening and the base are.The spices, the smoky tea , orange jammyness and burned sugar are the notes I’m looking for the most.
I believe the fragrance would leave sensual trail , with cozy properties
    Thanks for the draw

  • Interesting story of Picasso and Oppenheim and how the inspiration for fur teacup and spoon came about. State of Mind Aesthetic Turbulence seems like an interesting tea-inspired creation that pays tribute to the roaring 1920s and the artists that defined it. I am in US

  • The complexity of Immortelle really sparks my interest, it’s sounds so magnificent, I live in Trzebnica, Poland, EU.

  • Wearescentient’s review is as usually captivating and evocative, I know this not only by his articles here at cafleurebon, but mostly from J`s IG. The narrative that connects the perfume to the story of Meret Oppenheim and surrealism sparks my interest the most!

What particularly is interesting for me is the way the review explores the artistic and creative aspects of fragrance. It makes me curious to experience State of Mind`s Aesthetic Turbulence. The notes of Oolong Tea and Mandarin make it even more appealing because it instantly reminded me of roasted Chinese Tie Guan Yin in mandarin which I once bought for myself as a huge tea lover. And that was an extraordinary combination of sweet and sour slightly spicy citrus peel, even though it was dried, and the astringent smoky green tea inside it. I would like to try this in a perfume interpretation. And I am pretty sure it is as good as the real tea.

    I am from the EU.

  • What a wonderful review! Sometimes we need a little turbulence to push our palettes and show us we can like things outside our comfort zones. I like that you used the word symphony.. a place where most all the instruments are present. I’d love to see what this diverse incongruous group of ingredients creates. And the bottle is beautiful. In Tx.

  • Thank you for the review.
I am captivated by the intricate and poetic way the fragrance, “State of Mind Aesthetic Turbulence,” is described. The way it transforms from sweet orange and oolong tea to a figgy-spiced sweetness with a hint of biscuit in the dry down is fascinating. Looking at the notes, I can already tell that this one is going to be one of those fragrances that I’ll can never stop thinking about until I get my hands on a bottle. As a green tea lover, I’m surprised I didn’t find this perfume house sooner!

Followed on Instagram. Much love from NY,US!

  • What sparked my interest based on J Wearescentient’s review is how the oolong tea note intertwines with the other notes creating a captivating sensory journey. Thank you for the opportunity. From New York, USA.

Thank you for this review, J Wearescentient! Must be interesting to smell like Gatsby. I loved so much the light put on Meret Oppenheim here (Picasso be damned), very lovely, made this perfume seem even more enchanting, expanding your senses. I’m currently residing in Romania, Europe. 🙂

  • First time I’ve ever heard of State of Mind was when I read Karl Topham take on Fanfarone Italiano. As a Pastry Chef, and gourmand lover I was so impressed with his Crème de Cassis Chocolate Cake drizzled with cognac ,and drinking ristretto like review, I had to order a sample set , hard task to be honest. I looked for hours, and the only place i was able to find the full sample set was on Ebay

“Available at Parfums Raffy and So Avante Garde so be sure to sample or buy, or order directly from the State of Mind Website ”

The reason I ordered my sample set from Ebay was that Fanfarone Italiano is not available in US. Mesmerizing gourmand, my right hand at the bakery, French Canadian went to Paris on a trip in August , and brought me a bottle , must try for every gourmand lover !
I love the idea of having fragrances leaving you with the impression of drinking tea , or coffee. After reading the article I’d say I partially agree with J Wearescentient’s take on Aesthetic Turbolence , he well described the fragrance and the sweet orange, the tea , tobacco and like the “hint of biscuit” comparison. On the other hand no red pepper , and definitely no animalic facets are present on me , what is present is the liquorice and rhubarb.
Eating Black Liquorice Tarts, with Rhubarb and Orange Marmalade , and drinking Oolong Tea is how Aesthetic Turbolence smells to me.
Fanfarone Italiano is my favorite State of Mind fragrance.
Appreciate the review, and the giveaway campaign

  • Wow. What a review! This was my favorite part.
Thanks for the very generous giveaway, I live in the USA.

  • I love tea fragrances. This one sounds very different and interesting. It’s the line “ Soft smoky oolong tea notes gracefully intertwine with the rich immortelle” that hooked me as I also love immortelle. Very interested to get my nose on this one – thanks for the chance to win! I’m in MN, USA.

  • I love smoky Oolong tea notes. I’ve been really digging scents like Masque Milano Russian Tea and Arquiste Indigo Smoke lately. They are opposite ends of the spectrum for sure, but both offer the signature coziness of a smoky tea. I imagine this would fall a bit in the middle. The tobacco and honey would make it warm, but not as arid as Russsian Tea can be, but certainly not as cool and fresh as Indigo Smoke. It sounds gorgeous and I would love to experience what it has to offer. Best f luck to all. I live in NC, USA.

  • Very interesting, historically-minded review; I’m not familiar with Meret Oppenheim and enjoyed the story behind the “Object” dining set.

State of Mind Aesthetic Turbulence sounds like a particularly good take on herbal perfumes, the oolong and green teas a complex fixture for jammy fruit and honeyed immortelle, along with that totally unexpected red pepper (which I’m really curious about). The smoky oolong drydown sounds wonderful too. Really unique list of notes paired with a beautiful orange bottle, and the State of Mind tea theme is always welcome. I’d love to try this cuppa.

    I’m in the USA.

  • State of Mind has such a great aesthetic!I love the triangular bottles and the fragrance inspiration is spot on. Aesthetic Turbulence is such a great name for a scent that celebrates the pursuit of perfection and harmony. The citrus and tea opening sounds lovely with the smoky oolong lingering into the jasmine heart and hay like immortelle. The red pepper note sounds fascinating in this context. I’m in the US.

  • I was not expecting such a unique orange and oolong tea fragrance like State of Mind Aesthetic Turbulence , embodiment of Art Deco movement and Roaring Twenties.
Judging by J @wearescentient contribution today, Aesthetic Turbolence is a laid back fragrance with smoky Oolong tea , tobacco, patchouli, honey and jasmine. The universal message in the fragrance is quite clear , you should be enjoying life way more , relax, drink tea and don’t worry oneself .
    Exciting giveaway, USA

  • Immortelle and oolong tea are two of my favorite fragrance memories… “Pearly Everlasting” we called it when I was I child, and I would search for it in the woods, and hang it upside down to dry in my bedroom. Oolong tea was introduced to me later in life, over a sumptuous meal, and became a standard for my interpretation of flavorful sips. I would absolutely love to experience a fragrance that combines these precious notes. I think the reference to the gracefulness and mystery accomplished by this combination is truly intriguing. Thank you for this generous draw! NH, USA

  • J Wearescentient did a great job in this review.
State of Mind is a fragrance house that is growing on me like no other. The quality, the creativeness they have is amazing.
Aesthetic Turbulence is something that will totally be a blast. The sweet orange, the herbal notes, the rich florals, everything blends to become this amazing work of art.
I hope I get my nose on it soon.

  • Everything about this article made me happy, from the perfume to its inspiration, Jay Gatsby, to the fur-covered cup, saucer, and spoon. I JUST listened to a review of this fragrance and immediately added a sample to my cart at So Avante Garde. Tea is one of my favorite notes! I think the universe is trying to tell me I need to smell this perfume I live in Indiana.

  • Amazing article and review by J Wearescentient! I’m really drawn to these notes: tea, jasmine and bergamot – I’d love to know how they play together with Immortelle, red pepper and labdanum!
The part that sparked my interest the most is “State of Mind Aesthetic Turbulence is a fragrance that takes you on a sensory journey, as it opens you experience the sweet orange and soft savoury green aromatics with herbal undertones, its subtly complex with rich floral notes intertwined with hints of herbal greens and dark tones of black teas.” That sounds dreamy!

This is actually the third time in the last two weeks, that I see or hear something about this fragrance. I first saw a display of the line also with some beautiful scarfs. I was interested since Ive never heard of the brand before. Unfortunately I was not able to smell any of them. Then a few days ago a friend recommended it to me, because we were speaking of fragrances with a prominent tea note. And here it is again in your review.
It sounds so sophisticated… definitely on the list of things I’ll be sampling next.
Thank you for the chance, to win a bottle.

  • I was sold from the opening paragraph! Immortelle and oolong tea? Yes, please! That was a fun review with the art parallel to Meret Oppenheim, a different take on twisting two notes together in a unexpected pairing. I live in the USA. Thanks for the giveaway.

I do have a good feeling about State of Mind fragrances. Catherine Laskine Balandina and her brand i think shows how be be unique relying on tea products, selling both high end tea , and sopisticated tea based fragrances.
I’m pleased Aesthetic Turbolence is not just a well made tea scent, the balance between the notes i find appealing , especially the Oolong tea , the orange, jasmine and burned honey immortelle. I’d pair with Aesthetic Turbolence with Burnt Orange Herringbone Linen Tailored Suit, Double Cuff cotton Pin Collar Shirt and tan loafers.
Thank you J @earescentient , Catherine Laskine Balandina, State of Mind

  • The furry teacup has always been one of my favorite moments from that era! The review makes this sound less challenging than I suspect it is, but I love the art deco flair. I live in the U.S.

  • Interesting tea cup. The notes look really lovely. I am noticing a lot of tea based fragrances lately. Jammy orange, fig and then biscuit in the dry down……sounds like my kind of tea party. I tested some from this line at Finer Things in Santa Fe NM, but I don’t recall this fragrance being there. Thanks for the chance. USA.

  • Januarililjan says:

“Soft smoky oolong tea notes gracefully intertwine with the rich immortelle, creating a symphony of scents that is both captivating and alluring. The honeyed hay and tobacco facets add a touch of mystery, while the dark spiced sweetness lingers on your skin, reminiscent of the quiet intensity of honey. The initial orange jammyness transforms into a softly figgy-spiced sweetness, with just a hint of biscuit, as the fragrance settles into its dry down.” This sounds interesting! Would love to win. I live in the EU.

  • I am a huge tea lover and I love fragrances which contains the tea notes, so i definitely wanna go on that sensory journey with sweet orange and soft savory green aromatics, with rich floral notes with hints of herbal greens and dark tones of black teas. What sparks my interest based on J Wearescentient’s review of State of Mind Aesthetic Turbulence is how this spicy floral fragrance changes to a beautiful herbal Oolong Tea as well of some of my fragrance notes Licorice and Immortelle. Reading about the fur art of Oppenheim, made me think about how carefree minds wander, bringing to life the unthinkable.
Aesthetic Turbulence seems very appealing, I wonder if it is as surrealist and original as the furry tea set.

The review’s mention of an “almost animalic” facet really sparks my interest because most tea-forward fragrances lean in the opposite direction. • State of Mind fragrances I discovered in Germany, they are available in a big local fragrance store. The salesperson told me about the history, how they were made , and the tea concept.
I like how Nicoleta Tomsa revealed extra information about Aesthetic Turbolence story ,about Café Flore , Pablo Picasso and Meret Oppenheim. If I remember correctly the fragrance smells pretty much the same like Nicoleta described it, dark , smoky and green tea , with tea spoon of honey. Top quality , more artistic tea fragrance if you ask me.
Out of the few State of Mind fragrances I’ve smelled Spontaneous Generosity i like the most. The salesman also told me that there one fragrance with slightly different idea , based on coffee, cognac and walnuts , but it’s not yet available in Germany, probably in the Spring.

Thank you for the review of this super neat fragrance, J @wearescentient.

I really like the bottle and the notes of this fragrance. I imagine this fragrance has the texture of what looking and touching the fur of Meret Oppenheim’s masterpiece.

Immortelle is certainly a not of opulence and harkens back to the days of vintage perfumery. I love the honeyed jaminess, mixed with the smoky tannic qualities of tea and the vibrancy of mandaring and green tea.
