There are places I’ll remember

All my life, though some have changed

Some forever, not for better

Some have gone, and some remain…” The Beatles, My Life

“You can’t go home again” – the old aphorism is sad but too often true. Places cherished and protected in memory change with time, sometimes beyond recognition. Woodlands, swamps and creeks transform into strip malls, parking lots and drainage ditches. Windswept beaches, once empty and wild, are now lined with high-rise condos and crowded with people.  But despite all the construction – and destruction – the spirits of the land and sea remain.  A closer look  (and yes a sniff) will reveal them, as if by magic. The perfumes of Angela St. John of Solstice Scents Summer 2020 Collection spirit me away to landscapes lost to “progress”, celebrating the beauty and mystery that still reside in what remains of our natural world.

As a child I was alternately at home in two very different environments – the cool, wet mountains and rainforests of the Pacific Northwest and the warm beaches, crystal clear springs and semitropical lowland forests of Central Florida. In her extremely popular and quickly disappearing Summer 2020 collection, Floridian perfumer Angela St. John conjures up my early memories of the Sunshine State.  I relive the scent and majestic presence of the native Southern magnolias via Solstice Scents Magnolia. I imagine the wet-hot coquina sand beaches by way of her Coquina fragrance and, with single spritz of Solstice Scents Spirit Tree, recollections of long-ago, sultry summer evenings fill my mind. The 2020 reprise of Spirit Tree distills the essence of Southern gardens, citrus groves and live oaks – their spreading branches festooned with Spanish moss – into a fragrance that is at least as real as my remembered experiences.

Solstice Scents Spirit Tree is a white floral perfume like no other in recent memory. Instead of a simple, easily parsed bouquet of gardenias, jasmine and orange blossom, Spirit Tree opens like the wall of scent I encountered when first stepping into a Southern garden at midnight. Each note plays off the other, creating a humid, rendition of spicy, lactonic gardenia, laced with jasmine and smoothed with creamy vanilla and sandalwood.   After this almost brazen introduction, the initial warmth, humidity and floral density quickly evaporate into the night, revealing a clear, ethereal heart of the lightest cedar, sandalwood, citrus and magnolia.

As Solstice Scents Spirit Tree withdraws and embraces the skin, contrasting facets of scent are exposed; first the sandalwood, paired with light cedar, then a sweet, vegetal, citrus-laden magnolia.  Solstice Scents Spirit Tree is never static, but transforms and shifts as one scented wraith after another appears and then disappears, surprising my nose with its depth and diversity.  The perfume continues to evolve for eight hours on skin and overnight on clothing, the constant change supported by a lingering sense of déjà vu. Yes, I have been here before. I know this scent.  I’ve lived this life.

Notes: Gardenia, vanilla, jasmine, sandalwood, Soft Woods blend, orange blossom and magnolia.

Disclaimer:  I would like to thank Angela St. John and Solstice Scents for my cherished sample of Spirit Tree.  My opinions are my own.

With lovers and friends, I still can recall

Some are dead and some are living

  • There’s nothing like the scent of a humid, wet garden at night. The Spanish moss hanging from trees is truly a sight to see. I enjoyed reading about Angela St. John. Thanks for another great draw. Mich USA

  • I’m in the USA and have become a great admirer of the magic Angela weaves with her beautiful Solstice Scents creations. As Gail mentioned, and what moves me about her Spirit Tree review is the depth, diversity and transformation to another time and place aspect of the fragrance, that rings true. Scent is a powerful experience, bringing back cherished memories moving time and space in an instant.

  • I liked the vivid imagery of landscape, both physical and olfactory, created by Gail in this review of Spirit Tree. It transports me to a garden filled with magnolia trees with blossoms of gardenia and jasmine, all playing their olfactory music in a concert. Beautiful review of a seemingly beautiful fragrance. Thanks Gail for the review. Writing from the USA.

  • This appeals to me about Solstice Scents Spirit Tree based on Gail’s review “Spirit Tree opens like the wall of scent I encountered when first stepping into a Southern garden at midnight. I live in the US

  • I’ve been reading about this line, but I haven’t tried any of the fragrances yet. I am excited about Spirit Tree being featured here. I enjoyed the beautiful description of the lovely floral notes blended with soft woods, evoking magical landscapes. In the USA.

  • I am In the USA. I got a small oil sample of spirt tree in my last solstice scent order and it’s incredible! Just like Gail’s review it does transport you. When I smell this scent And close my eyes, I imagine night time, Standing next to a big tree with humid florals wrapped around the tree. I definitely want to full size this perfume! Perfect timing to try and win! 🙂

  • This review really resonates with me. I feel like I’ve been at home for way to long due to the current health situations. I feel like I seek and need fragrances like this one, fragrances that can transport me to some other place and some other time. Especially those that remind me of nature or of some relaxing calm place I need so much right now. I live in Illinois, US.

The non-obvious and whimsical nature of this white floral feels so intriguing and inviting that I cannot help but regret I did not have the chance to experience being close to magnolia trees in my childhood. It would be amazing to try the perfume. Based in Ireland

  • I have never tried a Solstice Scents fragrance before, but Spirit Tree sounds lovely. I like that it does a white floral in a unique way. I also like how Gail ties the fragrance to a midnight garden. I really enjoyed the article and the fragrance sounds very lovely. Kind regards from Illinois, USA.

Notes: Gardenia, vanilla, jasmine, sandalwood, Soft Woods blend, orange blossom and magnolia. This is a house that I am not familiar with but I am intrigued by the notes especially gardenia, jasmine, magnolia and sandalwood. Thanks a lot from the UK

A beautiful description by Gail conjuring up images of the smells of home triggers nostalgic memories. A house that I have no experience with but fascinated by the notes of Jasmine, sandalwood, magnolia and vanilla. Thanks a million from the United Kingdom

  • I love Gail’s description of Spirit Tree , because I can tell she understands what it is like to live in a place that can produce that scent. The “wall of scent” is so true in the hot and humid southern United States. Angela St. John is a genius with scent. I have a few of hers and I would love to win this one. Many thanks for a most evocative review and many thanks for this awesome draw. I’m in the USA

  • i love green scents and this green moist luscious cedar tree with some citrus is just going to find a good home here. It could solice my feeling of loneliness and give me the feeling om going outside into the woods instead of staying inside because of COVID. Living in the EU

  • The constant evolution of this fragrance, the sense of familiarity it conveys and its development for 8 hours and even overnight are the bits that sounded most appealing and interesting about this scent. I have to admit I have never tried anything by Solstice scents before, though. I am in Europe, thanks for the article and the draw.

  • I have very fond memories of visiting Florida growing up, as one set of grandparents retired there (Punta Gorda). My grandmother, Eastern European diaspora, grew citrus fruits and hibiscus there, and as she tended them lovingly, always threatened her recalcitrant tomato plants with uprooting if they weren’t fruitful.

Certain times of the year you would step out to the lanai of the house and really be hit with a wall of humidity, scent and sound as the citrus trees blossomed. This perfume review really spoke to that!

I would love to have a scent that summons up the nostalgia for that house and those memories! In Canada and thank you again for this review.

  • “Stepping into a Southern garden at midnight, humid, warm and sensual.” Look forward to trying this. USA

  • This sounds so perfect I’m looking for a Southern gothic scent and would love to try this “Southern garden at Midnight” I am U.K. and am constantly admiring Solstice Scents I will order some soon but would love to win this.

  • I can still conjure the scent of gardenias here in the mountains of Upstate New York. As long as I am bonded to my sweetheart, who cannot bear humidity, I will not be able to live where that creamy white, fragrant blossom thrives. And while I enjoy my solitude on this peak, I am not alone in my love for gardenia. There’s an old man who runs a small motel. The rooms are painted shell pink, because that was his wife’s favorite. When they ran a diner in Queens, he bought her a small gardenia plant for their tenth wedding anniversary. It lived happily on the counter. They brought it with them when they moved up here and opened the motel, and gave it a home on their patio. It loved summer. It grew and grew. They brought it inside in winter. The lady grew ill and died. In his grief, the man devoted himself to the tree. It’s enormous now. He keeps it on a platform with wheels, and wheels it outside in summer, and inside when the leaves turn, as they are turning now. Forever and ever, the scent of gardenia will promise that somewhere it’s summer, and romance will never die.

  • I was sold on this scent by the description of a southern garden at midnight. I’m in the US. Thanks!

  • I enjoy the idea of a scent that resembles a southern garden. The memories of my grandmother’s garden are flooding back. USA

  • White floral, citrus, jasmine, gardenia, sandalwood.. that’s what I like. Love the notes and would love to try this scent.
I’m in the US. Thanks for the opportunity!

  • I like Gail’s description of Spirit Tree, because I can tell she spend quite some time to describe the idea clearly. The “wall of scent” is so true in the hot and humid southern United States. Angela St. John is a genius with scent. I have a few of hers and I would love to win this one. Thank you very much for the draw. I’m in the USA

  • Gail describes a “wall of scent” opening that winds down to sandalwood, cedar and citrus magnolia drydown. Oh my! From go big or go home to why don’t you stay awhile? This sounds gorgeous. I live in the USA.

  • I love Solstice Scents! Angela has a way of transporting you to a specific location. Some of my favorites are Winter Dove, Grey’s Cabin, Desert Thunderstorm, Badlands, Flowers Nocturnal, Witch’s Cottage, Gibbon’s Boarding School, Foxcroft, and Blossom Jam Tea Cakes, but so many are evocative and interesting. Spirit Tree sounds interesting in the way it shifts, and I would love to try it.
    I’m in CA

  • I’m a big Solstice Scents fan! I ordered some scents from them for fall last year and was blown away! I love the atmospheric and earthy nature of her scents. A couple of my favorites from their collection are Manor, Manor Fire, and Smokewood Apiary. The notes in Spirit Tree are truly appealing to me—the sandalwood, the floral notes and the citrus. I also love your descriptions of the warmth and humidity that seem to permeate the scent. I would definitely be interested in giving it a try! I’m from the USA.

This sounds like yet another stunner from Angela.
She’s a true master at creating magical, evocative, and atmospheric scents that totally transport you.
Thanks for the chance. I’m in NY.

  • I have heard the best things about solstice scents and Gail’s review just confirms it; this is some magical stuff. I love perfumes that evoke a memory and atmosphere and would love to try Spirit Tree. I used to have a perfume oil that tried to evoke the scent of a Southern garden and it was beautiful, but was discontinued and I’ve been looking ever since. Solstice Scents’ Spirit Tree may just be it! Marit, I’m in the UK

  • Bryant Worley says:

What I appreciated from Gail’s review is that the fragrance sounds like a UNIQUE (who could hate that?) white floral that is, not only great smelling, but ever-evolving on your skin with contrasting facets of smells. Wunderbar!

I live in Waldorf, MD, USA.

  • doveskylark says:

I am a big fan of Wilcox’s from Solstice Scents. Wow! It is so well-blended. I am sure Spirit Tree will be amazing, too. I am very interested in the cedar and magnolia notes.

    I live in the USA.

  • This sounds beautiful & I love the pictures of the trees draped in Spanish moss. I was in New Orleans once and was stopped in my tracks by the scent of a small tree nearby. I never found out what it was. Thank you for another great review of an indie house. I’m in the US.

  • The ability to capture such a specific place with a scent is quite appealing. It sounds quite unique. I live in the USA.

  • I’m in the USA and no one does white florals like Solstice Scents! White Feather is one of my favorites, so this sounds right up my alley.

  • What grabs my attention upon first glance is the wonderful imaginative filled Solstice Perfume art. The art takes my visual senses to a wonderful place where I can almost smell the fragrance. I fell in love with Spirit Tree and Attic. Both pictures were exactly like I thought the scents would be. Attic was like the scent of walking up into my grandparents attic and smelling Rosewood@ grandma’s dresses in the steamer trunks stored for another time. I am hooked on Angela St. John’s purfumes @ whipped soap collection.

  • wallygator88 says:

Thank you for the lovely review Gail.

I’m taken back to my childhood, walking along the beachside , with the warm salty night sea breeze wafting around, the smell of eucalyptus, petunias and honeysuckle weaving in and out.

Thank you for taking me down memory lane. This was the major appeal when I read your review about this scent.

    Regards from WI, USA

Having lived in the South most of my life, I treasure memories of the scents of white flowers in a moonlit garden. Thanks for this review and the chance at the draw. I’m currently wearing Solstice Scents’ Courtyard.
