“We are all angels here on earth, we just need to wake up to our true selves.” – Sarah Horowitz-Thran

I was very curious to find out what kind of scent would awaken my inner angel, especially when it is a creation from the amazing Sarah Horowitz-Thran. Sarah’s perfumes and background has been extensively covered on CaFleureBon over the past 12 years including in our Profiles of American Perfumery series, perfume reviews, perfumer’s workshop and as a ÇaFleureBon 2020 Hall of Fame winner.  Sarah has been creating scents almost her entire life, professionally since her college days in Boston during the late eighties and early nineties. There is always excitement around one of her new releases, especially when Sarah Horowitz Parfums Wake Up Angel is the first launch under her own label since 2018’s Hereafter  (also in the SHP Evolution Collection).

Not that Sarah hasn’t been creating new scents these past few years, her Tapestry for The American Perfumer in 2021 was a gorgeous piece that allowed her to step outside the box of her brand’s aesthetic and honors her own and all fathers. Wake Up Angel returns us to the joyful, comforting, warm fragrances Sarah Horowitz Parfums for which the brand is best known. The story of how Sarah Horowitz Parfums Wake Up, Angel came to be returns us to Sarah’s youthful years in Boston where she was on a self-proclaimed spiritual journey to find her inner angel through meditation, conversations or even in less typical locales such as Boston’s long lost Hub Club. Sarah dedicates this fragrance to her “nighttime gypsy of house music enlightenment” and to everyone who is balancing the light and darkness of life – aren’t we all?

I have never considered myself very spiritual but, I can certainly relate to Sarah’s memories of bodies writhing and sweating on a packed dancefloor while strobe lights and smoke create an other-worldly atmosphere.  In the swarm of anonymous bodies moving to an addictive thumping bass where even the loudest screams of the top-40 chorus’ are swallowed up by the darkness and blaring music, one can almost transcend to another realm.  While not what most of us would picture as spiritual, I understand how this scene can rival that of a quiet and serene meditation studio. Inner peace is not always derived from the peaceful.

But how does one create a fragrance that encompasses this dichotomy?  Sarah has succeeded by returning us to our youthful exuberance with a scent that can’t help but bring a smile to your face. From the very start, there is a bright blend of citrus fruits and berry-like florals that create a deep fuchsia haze in my mind; like the fumes from the smoke machine mixing with the neon strobe lights. The bright jasmine and rose bouquet are sweet but, tempered by the petitgrain, not sugary.  There is no sweaty animalic musk or even dirty patchouli to this creation. The magic of angels must be that they can go out clubbing all night and awake in a bed of soft, cozy musk, orris and creamy vanilla woods smelling irresistible!

Interestingly, I find some similarities between Sarah Horowitz Parfums Wake Up, Angel and the famous Baccarat Rouge 540. For me Sarah’s Wake Up, Angel is the more enlightened version with the same mix of fruity/citrus floral brilliance but, without the edginess of saffron and a base that is softer and cozier than MFK’s. There is a golden aura that surrounds Wake Up, Angel and persists for hours despite being a sheer scent.  At times I forgot I was wearing it but with a twist of my neck or stretch of my arm a smile would automatically develop as if my angel wings had released a soft cloud of floral vanilla fluff into the air.

My husband, who personally loves the strongest and wildest scents adores the smell of Sarah Horowitz Parfums Wake Up, Angel on my skin and my eldest daughter has already proclaimed this bottle for her own burgeoning collection arguing that it suits her better.  She may be disappointed; I don’t think I am ready to part with this one Sarah Horowitz Parfums’ Wake Up, Angel just may have aroused my inner angel by bringing back memories of a time where life was a little more carefree and blissful.

Notes: Bergamot, Lime, Sicilian Lemon & Pepper; Middle: Petit Grain, Rose, Night Blooming Jasmine, Juniper Berry; Base Orris Butter, Sandalwood, Patchouli, Musk, Vanilla and Cashmere Woods.

Once orris butter enters the scene I’m hooked. Petit grain and cashmere wood also are among the best. Sound sublime.

  • Like others have commented, I am also particularly intrigued due to the incorporation of orris butter in Wake Up Angel. When iris is deployed skillfully, it creates quite an intimate sensual perfume. The musk is also clean and the addition of vanilla ensures it will please other people, too because vanilla rarely offends anyone. I am in US.

  • All the notes listed in this perfume sound amazing.
I am always awed by the pictures painted by the reviewers.

  • I happen to be wearing Scents of Passion tonight; a delightful amber perfume by Sarah Horowitz. Wake Up, Angel is a fragrance I would love to try. Rachel’s description of the perfume as, “floral vanilla fluff” sounds too good to miss! ~Indiana

  • Wake Up, Angel sounds like it would transport me back in time when my friends and I were unafraid of finding new places to explore. Thanks for another awesome article and draw. Mich USA

  • What interest me about this fragrance is the relation between this and Baccarat Rogue, and hot this is a cozier version of it. As much as I love MFK’s creation, sometimes it can be a bit too loud to wear to cozier events.

  • I loved the idea of returning to a life that was more carefree and blissful. Plus, the combination of notes sounds magical.

I do love her perfumes. I can honestly say there isn’t one I haven’t loved. A favorite would be tough, but Perfect Coconut is yummy and Perfect Gardenia is intoxicating.

  • The mention of similarity to 540 is high praise as it is a very popular fragrance. Although I do not own it, I do love the fragrance. So glad that Sarah has started producing fragrances after a few years. Thanks for the draw. Tennessee, USA

Wearing Wake Up Angel sounds like a blissful experience. The coziness of the sandalwood, vanilla, musk and cashmere woods art highlighted by the effervescent fruit and florals. The addition of juniper berry is interesting because I always think of that as a more assertive note. Orris butter is always welcome. Favorite Sarah Horowitz perfume is Perfect Nectar. MD, USA.

  • That Sarah Horowitz Parfums Wake Up Angel is a better version of Baccarat Rouge 540, according to this review by Rachel is very high praise indeed for Sarah Horowitz Parfums Wake Up Angel. Music and dancing can be quite spiritual indeed as one can lose oneself in both, despite the high decibels in the settings that form the inspiration for Sarah Horowitz Parfums Wake Up Angel. It’s calming in its own way, despite not being a Buddhist monastery!! Quite intrigued by the way Sarah Horowitz Parfums Wake Up Angel develops and how it is warm, comforting and joyful, like other perfumes by Sarah Horowitz-Thran. Thanks for the review and draw. Unfortunately I haven’t tried this brand before, so don’t have a favorite, yet. I am in the USA.

  • We certainly do not need another BR540 dupe, but an enlightened version may be perfectly useful in this world. Sounds sublime. In maryland

  • I do not have a favorite Sarah Howoritz fragrance yet but this review makes me feel like I am missing something significant in my collection. The way Wake Up, Angel is being presented in its glorious duality makes it very appealing. I will really like to try a few fragrances from Sarah Howoritz collection.

Before reading this I’d imagined the scent to be soft and musky, thinking of something airy like clouds. But, Rachael opened my mind to something my playful with a little more punch! I love how the note breakdown didn’t align with my initial expectations, this was very intriguing!

  • I have yet to try any perfumes by Sarah but this one sounds like it would really suit me. I am on the younger side and even though I enjoy all kinds of scents, there are many that I just don’t quite feel “woman” enough for yet and hope to grow into in time. Wake Up, Angel seems to really have the right balance of gentle but fun that would make it a great daily reach. I am from USA.

Rachel’s review explaining the wafts of BR 540 sweetness, like your angle reappearing intrigued me. I haven’t tried Sarah’s other works yet.

  • Sarah Horowitz-Thran’s Tapestry, for American Perfumer, is one of my favorite perfume releases in resent memory. My spouse and I both absolutely love it. So I’m excited to see Sarah is releasing something new. I never spent time at clubs growing up, but I can see the appeal, and time spent dancing to a concussive beat and pulsing lights is a fun concept for a fragrance. Reading the notes list, I wouldn’t have expected this to be a subtle skin scent, but Rachel makes that element of this fragrance sound very appealing. Thanks for the review (and for the reminder to try some more SHP fragrances)!

    I’m in the midwest, USA.

  • Michael Prince says:

What interests me about Rachel’s review of Sarah Horowitz Wake Up Angel is how Rachel describes this fragrance as a lighter and fresher fruity and floral version of BR 540. This sounds less adventurous and edgy as most of Sarah’s releases. My favorite Sarah Horowitz perfume is Origin Story. I’m from the USA.

  • Bryant Worley says:

I appreciate the way Rachel captures the ethereal nature of the fragrance. Also, when iris is deployed skillfully, it creates quite an intimate sensual perfume. The musk is also clean and the addition of vanilla ensures it will prove c to be quite enjoyable. I live in Waldorf, Maryland, USA.

  • I love the wide-ranging inspirations of this fragrance. I can relate to moments of enlightenment happening in nature and the dance floor. The notes sound suitably, quietly divine. I owned a now-discontinued Sarah Horowitz scent years ago, and the name escapes me. My bottle didn’t last long. From the US.

  • I’m intrigued by what sounds like a combination of warm (sandalwood, patchouli…) And cool(jasmine, juniper…). And of course, like everyone else, I love orris.
    WV, USA

  • I adore anything angel-inspired, so I love the name of the fragrance. I enjoyed the article and was intrigued that you found a slight similarity to BR 540, but more lively and energetic. I very much like BR 540 but can find the saffron to be too much on some days. This one sounds so beautiful with the combination of fruity top notes combined with the earthiness of the drydown. I am a big fan of Sarah Horowitz fragrances and would love to add this to my collection. Not to mention, my family’s last name is the same as hers!
    I live in the US.

  • Regis Monkton says:

I’ve never tried anything from Sarah Horowitz Parfums and that is reason why I’m interested to try this fragrance. I like BR540-style fragrances, so I would like to see what this one is like. I live in the U.S.A.

Thanks for the review, Rachel. This fragrance has a fantastic set of notes, especially the night jasmine, orris butter and the cashmere woods.

A testimony to the fragrance is how both your husband and daughter enjoy it enough to claim it for themselves.

I love how there are many strong notes in this fragrance, but the fragrance manages to do a great job being sensual, cozy and that wraps around you like an aura of bliss.

I really enjoyed my sample of Tapestry from American Perfumer.

    Cheers from WI, USA

  • Ah, I totally resonated with the vibe of the creation. Going to concerts, listening to music, enjoying the stage lights, and carefree dancing. It really does get you in the zone, similar to a good workout. All the notes just say to me… let’s go it’s time for the show!
I live in the USA. I haven’t tried anything from the house before. Thanks for the giveaway!
