Sarah Horowitz Parfums Rose Gold Review (Sarah Horowitz-Thran) + Becoming You Draw

Sarah Horowitz Parfums Rose Gold review

“Sarah Horowitz Parfums Rose Gold is an homage to THE woman in the room. She stands out no matter what. The journey hasn’t been without struggle. She’s been tested, and emerged stronger. It’s not about finding yourself – Rose Gold is about becoming, and the confidence and commitment to create the life you were meant to live – originally and 100% your own.”~ Sarah Horowitz-Thran

Independent perfumer Sarah Horowitz-Thran knows a great deal about authenticity – quite possibly because she is one of those rare individuals who doesn’t possess a single false bone in her body. I find it completely in tune with the character of the very young woman I met on Newbury Street in Boston who ran the Essence boutique with fellow college student Dawn Spencer Hurwitz nearly four decades ago. We were all students: Dawn, at Boston University art school; Sarah at Emerson College studying drama, philosophy and religion; and me at Boston Conservatory, studying applied voice. (Six years ago, I wrote several lengthy pieces about both Dawn and Sarah’s beginnings along with interviews.) Back then I joked about Sarah’s being the “Geza Schoen” of American perfumery, because I was personally surprised at all the places she’s been behind the scenes, mostly officially recognized as ‘collaboration’. This is because Sarah puts her clients first: she views them “as the artist and the visionary – my job is simply to distill their vision and story into a fragrance”. She sees herself more as a translator. For whom has she translated? Olivine, Leila Lou, Rosie Jane, Sage Machado, Barbara Orbison’s Pretty Woman, Edward Bess, Urban Decay, Loree Rodkin, Ron Robinson’s Apothia, Warm NY, Pirette, Pilar & Lucy [The Exact Friction of Stars]. These are just a few…

You with the sad eyes
Don’t be discouraged, oh I realize
It’s hard to take courage
In a world full of people
You can lose sight of it all
I see your true colors
Shining through
I see your true colors
And that’s why I love you
So don’t be afraid to let them show
Your true colors
are beautiful
Like a rainbow” ~ True Colors, written by Billy Steinberg / Tom Kelly

Sarah’s fragrances are all about warmth – even the ‘cooler’ ones. I associate her with a genuine generosity of spirit which is conveyed through the conduit of cozy soft musks, pillowy ambers, tender florals, ample vanillas and tropical notes. Often, they possess ozonic, beachy overtones – the tell of a New Yorker who loved childhood Long Island seascapes and became a fervent Forever California Girl (in this wise she is as much a Left Coaster as I am a New Englander; we embodied those environs which chose us as home). Another primary characteristic of her work is the element of joy infused into every drop; I have sampled many of her perfumes, and I cannot recall any that felt melancholy to me. This too is in keeping with the optimism of Sarah Horowtiz Parfums Rose Gold – not that of the naive and untried, but born from deep consideration, examination and life experience. Her indefatigable energy fuels creativity; these aromatic leitmotifs are woven into her compositions. This is what informs her celebration of THE woman in the room explored in Rose Gold.

Perfumes for Confident women

A woman, yes – but the subject could very well be any given gender. All that is required is the confidence to pull it off. Strength, resilience and authenticity are admirable spiritual goals, and the ability to become oneself certainly requires a great deal of courage, especially when conviction may flag behind. Blood orange is a magical introductory top note, bursting with verve, enthusiastic; it opens everything up. Rosa damascena pulsates with vitality – a vibrant, expansive material which eases the heart. Ayurvedically speaking, all three doshas are positively affected by the rose – which explains its inclusion in many medicines, teas, preserves, salves, perfumes. It balances Sadhaka Pitta, the subdosha of Pitta that governs the emotions and their effect on the heart. At the same time, rose enhances the coordination between Sadhaka Pitta and Prana Vata (the subdosha of Vata which governs the brain, head, chest, respiration, sensory perception, and the mind). From gardenia (another mutual favorite; Perfect Gardenia is a real treat) we exact not only fullbodied sumptuous floralcy, but also a definite sense of wellbeing. The spicily fragrant carnation has long been brewed as a tea to assist with relaxation and alleviate anxiety and nervous tension – while its anti-inflammatory attributes (related to eugenol) are well-recognized. Imagine: perfume as medicine. As someone who has (sadly) been given to harping on endlessly about good food as good medicine, color as medicine, music as medicine, ad nauseam – how much more indication do we need to reinforce the assertion that good perfume is good medicine? The glowing charm of Rose Gold is anchored in an emblematic Sarah triumvirate of musk, vanilla and amber. Be your own person. Surround yourself with a mantle of self-confidence and gentility.

Notes: blood orange, Damask rose, gardenia, carnation, sheer musk, vanilla, amber

My beautiful bottle was given me by the perfumer – I cherish it.  My nose is my own…

  • A glowing review of Sarah Horowitz’s Rose Gold by Ida. Perfumes as medicine along with food, music, art, and what not – anyone who has tried perfumes, for whatever reason, knows the good effects, and sometimes not so good, of perfumes. Liked reading about the Ayurvedic healing qualities of rose and other notes in Rose Gold. Unfortunately, I haven’t tried any Sarah Horowitz perfumes, yet. Maybe this draw will be a lucky break. Thanks for the review Ida and a generous draw. Writing from the USA.

  • I am excited to read about a gender fluid fragrance suitable for strong and resilient personalities. I am drawn to the carnation as well as the gardenia note (the latter isn’t always easy in fragrance). I haven’t had the chance to try Sarah Horowitz’s creations, but I am very curious about them. I am in the Dallas Fort Worth area.

  • Always a beautiful review ith Ida’s words. Good perfume is good medicine. We all need that. Confidence , we need that too. Thank you for the encouragement. After Ida’s review, I would love to try Rose Gold. I have not sampled any of Sarah Horowitz Parfums. Maybe I will be lucky. Thank you for the draw. California.

I am drawn to the idea of a warm joyful fragrance . Also, the imagery of a soft feminine rose gold fragrance sounds amazing. I haven’t yet experienced any Sarah Horowitz fragrances.

  • Ida, yet another fantastic review. Sarah, thank you for being you, for the beauty of not only this, but of all your perfumes, and for the generosity of the draw.

Blood orange is one of my absolute favorite top notes, and paired with Damascene Rose? Va-va-va-voom! A match made in heaven, add in the gardenia and the amber, and my socks will need to be glued on not to be knocked off!

You know, I honestly do not think that I’ve smelled any of Sarah’s perfumes, which is rather sad since I know she is an amazing artist.

  • I love carnation and rarely encounter it in modern fragrances. Rose Gold sounds beautiful in its simplicity with blood orange, rose, and the musk/vanilla/amber base, but the care with which these are blended seems evident. It does feel like a fragrance for a warm, confident person. Favorite Sarah Horowitz perfume is Perfect Veil. Commenting from MD, USA.

Thank you for the beautiful review Ida.

The depth of your friendship comes out in your review. It was fun to read about the start of all these perfumers careers – fun trivia. I also really liked your portrayal of Sarah’s personaluity and how it reflects in her perfumery.

I have unfortunately never smelt anything from this house and do love rose based fragrances so much!

    Cheers from WI, USA

  • First of all, congratulations Ms Sarah on the CaFleureBon Hall of Fame honor! Rose Gold sounds fabulous with blood orange and carnation, some of my favorite notes. On my wishlist it goes! I agree, Ms Ida, perfume is medicine for me also. Thanks for another great article and generous draw! Mich USA

  • Since I’m a guy who likes wearing rose-based perfumes, Rose Gold sounds like something I would enjoy (as long as the gardenia is not too assertive). I loved Ida’s getting into th ayurvedic properties of the notes involved, something I don’t know much about but am fascinated by. And blood orange and rose sounds like a captivating combo. I have not tried any Sarah Horowitz perfumes. I am in the US, in NC.

  • Thank you for the review Ida and also thank you Michelyn for the art direction on this piece. What a beautiful celebration of feminine pride. I found it interesting to connect perfume as a medicine- I get it, enjoying scent can be so profoundly mood altering and uplifting. I have been meaning to get into Sarah’s creations, and this woman with a little life lived and some struggles and triumphs of a rose centered masterpiece sounds like a wonderful place to begin. Thank you for the generous opportunity. Commenting from NY

  • I’ve always wanted a really solid rose fragrance! Combine that with blood orange opening and it’s perfect. I don’t own any of Sarah’s fragrances unfortunately. USA based.

  • I love love love Sarah’s perfumes! They feel so cozy and natural like a Sunday morning in bed, sunrays reaching you through the leaves of a blooming tree. And they pack a punch too! I’m not eligible for the draw but I wish you guys good luck and I wish Sarah inspiration, strength and optimism! Take care, xxx

  • I liked how Ida discussed perfume as medicine. Especially regarding relaxation and alleviating anxiety, which I could do with very much. Also, the sense of joy she finds in this and seemingly all or most Sarah Horowitz Parfums. The base also sounds wonderful both the notes, musk, amber, and vanilla, as well as, the “glowing charm” and self confidence it seemingly evokes. I’ve not tried any perfumes from this house yet. From CT USA. Thank you for this very generous draw.

  • This sounds beautiful! I agree that a wonderful rose scent fills me with confidence. For me, rose is the scent of power and strength. And I’m always on the lookout for a truly wonderful rose fragrance. I don’t know this house, but the bottle is lovely! I’m in NYC.

  • Authenticity and letting your true colors shine through despite challenges or temptations. Have not tried any SHP yet, but would love to do so.

  • Great review, Ida! I really enjoyed your insights on Ayurveda as they relate to the notes in the fragrance. It reinforces your notion that good perfume is good medicine. Aromas are therapy. I can’t would love to get my nose on this to see how the scent transitions from the boldness of the blood orange into the soft notes of damask rose. That combination sounds so soothing.

  • I love the idea of perfume as healer. And this pushed me to look into doshas. I could really use the kind of healing it sounds like Rose Gold would give right now… I don’t think I’ve tried any SHP, but I watched some of the talks she’s given online via IAO. (California)

  • I appreciate the message conveyed here about Sarah’s approach to creating and the therapeutic power of pefume. The spiritual ties and holistic implications broken down for specific notes in this particular fragrance are very alluring. I have not had the opportunity to sample her work, and as such, have no favorite. Would love to be entered into this giveaway for the chance to enjoy this one though. I’m in IL, USA. Thank you!

  • This sounds like such a cozy, yet sexy fragrance. Those floral notes in the heart are 3 of my favorite! My favorite Sarah Horowitz fragrance is The Now. It is so ethereal.

    I live in the USA.

  • I hope that I win this fragrance. I’ve definitely heard of the perfumer, Sarah Horowitz, but I haven’t tried any of the fragrances which she’s made (I hope to try many of them eventually). I want to see what all of the notes in this are like. According to this review, it seems like the rose aspect of it is, and the other notes in it are, good for the body in different ways. I think that this fragrance can give me a good feeling when I’m working, relaxing, or doing anything else. I live in MD., U.S.A.

  • Bryant Worley says:

Going on Ida’s review, what I liked was her breakdown of the fragrance: “Blood orange is a magical introductory top note, bursting with verve, enthusiastic; it opens everything up. Rosa damascena pulsates with vitality – a vibrant, expansive material which eases the heart. Ayurvedically speaking, all three doshas are positively affected by the rose – which explains its inclusion in many medicines, teas, preserves, salves, perfumes. The spicily fragrant carnation has long been brewed as a tea to assist with relaxation and alleviate anxiety and nervous tension – while its anti-inflammatory attributes (related to eugenol) are well-recognized.”

Even though I haven’t (yet!) tried any SHP, notes are everything, and after perusing the site, some (but not all) worth sampling are: Origin Story, The Now, Hereafter, etc.

I live in Waldorf, Maryland, USA.

  • dorseyhorsey says:

Rose and carnation are two of my favorite notes. This sounds like the kind of fragrance that would constantly draw my wrist to my nose.

    USA 🙂

  • I’m a real big fan of rose, it does well on my skin so this fragrance really peaks my interest. Im not familiar with the house of Sarah Horowitz but this would be a great introduction. I live in Indiana USA

  • Michael Prince says:

What appeals to me about Sarah Horowitz Parfums Rose Gold based on Ida’s review is how her beautiful description of a traditional women’s fragrance with rose, amber, and vanilla has been brilliantly encapsulated by Sarah Horowitz. I have always been intrigued by all her creations I have tried. My favorite fragrance from Sarah Horowitz Parfums is Origin Story. I am from Ohio, USA.

  • What a sublime sounding scent! As a rose lover, I am absolutely in love with this entire scent and I haven’t even smelled it yet. It has everything I love, light florals, touches of vanilla, tropical notes to give the scent a feeling of fresh dew on an island. It truly sounds like an ode to womanity. I have not smelled anything from this house but better late than never!

    I reside in CA, USA.

  • Hi! i would love to try this super delicate and feminine parfum. Rose is one of my fav notes in parfumery and I love the fact that this brand isn’t so easy available. Greetings from Milan

  • My favorite Sarah Horowitz scent is her Soft Musk. I layer it with everything. Everything about Rose Gold EdP appeals to me. I love the idea of perfume as medicine, and this one sounds like just what the doctor ordered. I am in the US

  • Ida, so fun that you all knew each other back when, and who would have known how those threads would stay intertwined. Sarah’s Bliss was one of the very early perfumes that made my heart sing when I first tried it. It was stolen along with other of my perfumes a few years ago (too long of a story for here) and I’ve been meaning to replace it forever, and with all the cold we’ve had here, the thoughts of that tropical balm filled my head and I’ve had the tab up on my computer to buy! (This is my perfume buy system, leave the page open until it happens). Rose gold sounds like another winner from Sarah. thanks for the review and the draw.

  • redwheelbarrow says:

I have been using perfume as medicine quite a bit lately and find it interesting which scents I crave from day to day. I haven’t tried any of Sarah Horowitz’s fragrances but love that you find joy in each of them. I think I will need to get some samples. Thanks for the draw. I’m in the US.

  • I felt joy reading this review from Ida. I haven’t tried anything from Sarah Horowitz, but I have heard raves about her Perfect Veil perfume. I used to run away from rose fragrances, saying to myself, “how dare you wear something that is so perfect in nature?” But now I no longer say such horrible things to myself.
    I live in the USA.

  • I love the backstory of the days when Ida, Dawn and Sarah were in their college years and I had no idea that Sarah and Dawn ran a shop together. This scent appeals to me because the theory that it is for a woman or whomever wants to be confident and basically manifest the life they want to live and I need that right now, I am sure many people do. I live in the USA

  • Up until now, I was not aware that Sarah had created The Exact Friction of Stars (one of my first niche loves) or the by Rosie Jane line, of which I also own several. She is so amazing! Of course my all-time favorite perfume by her is Perfect Veil, which will forever be a part of my collection. The scent of Damask rose is so joyfully luxurious, I know that Sarah has done great things with it in Rose Gold. CONUS
