Roja Parfums A Goodnight Kiss review

Early childhood memories linger forever: they mold us, haunt us, and reverberate in the blood. Olfactory memories in particular hold sway over all our other senses in their immediacy, their unique ability to awaken slumbering recollection.  Roja Parfums A Goodnight Kiss is a very personal homage to Roja Dove’s mother Eileen and the dawning of his lifelong veneration of All Things Fragrant. We can identify with this on many levels – be the triggers cooking aromas, the smell of gasoline, cigarettes, coffee, the garden and more. Mr. Dove’s love was precipitated by a specific recollection at age six: his glamorous gold lamé-garbed mother stopping in to kiss him good night en route to a cocktail party. Young children are impressionable; many years hence in 2015 he released Roja Parfums A Goodnight Kiss on her birthday, January 6th.

It is an undeniable labor of love and tribute to his first elegant woman. There are tendrils in A Goodnight Kiss which reflect several elements present in Eileen’s beloved Coty L ’Aimant (note the double meaning: “Loving Her” as well as “The Magnet”) – a loving accolade to her favorite perfume.

Perfumes our mothers wore

I feel Mr. Dove’s fondness. My mother was stunning; she adored perfume, an unabashed sensualist. Estelle enlisted Tante Sylvia as ‘cultural attachée’: together they ventured out into the evening (Sylvia’s treat) to gorge themselves on art and music. It was then that I’d be bewitched by lashings of Lanvin Arpège, Le Galion Sortilège (Estelle) and Carven Ma Griffe and Raphael Réplique (Sylvia). This was the late 1950s-early ‘60s, heyday of aldehydic florals. My mother craved millefleur scents; Sylvia was enamored of mossy green florals. I buried my nose in everything they touched, trying to capture all that fragrant sorcery. Sylvia was slender, an impeccable Manhattanite; Estelle’s nimble fingers knit elegant ensembles in mohair and cashmere to accentuate her curves. It was thrilling to feign sleep as they entered on tiptoe and kissed us! I wonder if Roja did likewise: stealthy, secretive pleasures in dimly lit chambers. How I longed to be them – graceful, raffinée, gloriously perfumed.

Coty L'Aimant vintage perfume review 1945

Roja Parfums A Goodnight Kiss is emblematic of gracious living. Consider what’s best of Chanel and Guerlain and then some, and you’ve got it right. Available as parfum strength, it opens triumphantly with blindingly dazzling aldehydes firmly sandwiched in between the camps of Chanel No.22 and Chanel No.5. Pair them with bergamot and you are off and running – a masterly prelude.

A Goodnight Kiss Roja Parfums

From here on we wax floral with exquisite absolutes of all sorts: jasmin de Grasse, orange blossom, rose de mai, ylang ylang and carnation among them. The carnation and violet are distinguishing markers in that they are more likely to appear in beloved Guerlains such as L’Heure Bleue and Après l’Ondée. Eileen’s Coty L’ Aimant shares these aldehydes, ylang ylang, rose and ionones, dianthine bursts of spicy carnation; its green notes are the result of herbal armoise, cyclamen aldehyde and vetiveryl acetate. Amyl cinnaminic aldehyde imparts a soft fresh jasmine with a wisp of spice. Roja’s mother possessed impeccable taste, and classics meriting the name are ones to study and cherish. They inspire: in A Goodnight Kiss modernity fuses with what one loves most about vintage – its degree of discernment, marvelous materials, consummate artistry and capacity to evolve upon the skin revealing layer upon layer of subtle entanglements. It takes a while for the perfume’s initial ebullience to quieten and when it does, you find yourself enveloped in a floral flesh-identical rice-powder accord which echoes finely-milled face powder and insinuation of a buttery leather handbag. Such a fragrance makes one feel utterly beautiful, with wings…

Notes: aldehydes, bergamot, carnation, jasmin de Grasse, mayflower, orange blossom, rose de mai, violet, ylang ylang, green notes, spice notes, clove, cedarwood, orris, rice powder accord, leather, musk

  • I loved the description of the aldehydic opening that resembles fragrances such as Chanel No. 5 and No. 22 and the parallels drawn with several vintage classics. The name is beautiful and the packaging is delightful, along with his homage to his mom. I live in the USA.

  • What beautiful memories of Roja Dove mom Eileen and I enjoyed the revue and ida Meister remembering her mother’s too. That photo of Roja and his mother Eileen was so touching. My mother wore tresor by Lancôme

  • Oh. What an amazing review! This is probably hands down my very favorite Roja. I get so many compliments and it’s very comforting.
    Here was my favorite part.

The first perfume I remember my Mom wearing was Tigress, I loved playing with the furry cap
Thanks much for the generous giveaway, I live in the USA.

  • The review makes it sound like everything I love in perfume is in this scent 🙂 My mother had allergies so no perfume or scented things in the house. I had to put on Cinnabar (my perfume while I was a teenager) only when I was leaving the house! Thank you so much for the drawing 🙂

  • What a beautiful review of a beautiful fragrance! Amazing timing for me, as I only last week received a sample and fell immediately in love. The back story didn’t hurt any either….. Aldehydic florals are a very special category to me – all glamour and timeless elegance. What I loved most about Ida’s review was her lovely sketch of her mother and aunt; I can never get enough glimpses of the fashionable perfumed women of yesteryear. The first perfume I clearly remember as my mother’s signature perfume was Calvin Klein Obsession. It truly meant glamour to me and I still think of it as a perfume “above my head,” so to speak, in its bombshell fabulousness. I live in the US. Thanks so very much for this amazing opportunity!

  • Thank you, Ida, for another review that makes me believe I am actually smelling the perfume. How wonderful that you and Mr. Dove have similar childhood memories of dazzling mothers! I have to say what I loved most about your article is the summoning of L’Aimant. I have a precious bit of the vintage and I love it dearly.

Thank you Cafleurebon and Roja Parfums for this generous draw. I live in the US.

  • Thanks for another fabulous article! My Mom loves floral perfumes. I remember her pretty bottle of Laura Ashley No 1. A Good Night Kiss is such a beautiful name for a touching tribute to Roja Dove’s Mom. USA

  • NiceVULady says:

I loved reading of the olfactory memories of Roja Dove and Ida. Mine are of Lou Lou, Opium, Raffinee, Cabochard, and others worn by my mother. This sounds gorgeous and I so hope to win this. Thank you for a stunning review and a generous draw. I’m in the USA

  • Elizabeth T. says:

What a beautiful tribute to his mother. I love how his tribute captures whispers of the perfume she loved, Coty L’ Aimant. Beautiful memories of Ida’s mother and aunt as well… thank you for sharing these special, personal stories with us, your readers. They were gloriously perfumed, indeed. A beautiful review, fitting for such a perfume. Thank you!!!

  • Dubaiscents says:

I completely agree that Roja’s mother had impeccable taste in perfumes. I can see where he gets it from! I love the description of layer upon layer of entanglements. I would love to enjoy this scent. Thanks for the draw. I’m in the US.

  • I love the way the memories were described. Makes me dwell on my fond memories as a child. Thank you USA

  • A great memory and tribute. Havent got a chance to try Roja Parfums. Seen a video of him talking about this Parfum. Sounds nice and hope to get a chance to try it out. Thanks, US

  • redwheelbarrow says:

What a beautiful review and a beautiful inspiration for a fragrance. I’m a bit jealous of these perfumers who can create a fragrance to allow them to relive precious memories. I loved reading about Ida’s memories of her mother. Thank you for the draw. I am in the US.

  • doveskylark says:

I loved reading about Roja Dove’s tribute to his mother. I also loved what Ida wrote about vintage perfumes and their ability to evolve and layer entanglements.
My mother would sometimes wear Arpège and Chanel No. 5–gifts she had received when she was a teenager in the 50s–as well as 70s drugstore classics like Charlie and Jontue.
    I live in the USA.

  • bigscoundrel says:

I love Roja fragrances and the artistry behind A Goodnight Kiss sounds wonderful. I’m in the USA.

  • What a beautiful tribute to a beautiful mum.
”They inspire: in A Goodnight Kiss modernity fuses with what one loves most about vintage – its degree of discernment, marvelous materials, consummate artistry and capacity to evolve upon the skin revealing layer upon layer of subtle entanglements.” I love beautiful layers of entanglements.
Ida, once again you have amazed and ensnared me. I’m registered and in the US.

  • I liked most that this is tied back to a scent memory from childhood and what it symbolizes and that Ida was able to relate with a similar memory. In the U.S. Thanks.

  • i think my mother sometimes wore coty, or jean nate…she didn’t wear much perfume, then or now. my grandmother wore Chanel #5, which still reminds me of her. mostly i remember the jergen’s lotion that my mother wore, which must have had some lily in it. this scent, however, doesn’t make me think of any of these things…except wearing it for a special occasion, or making it one’s signature scent. i think the aldehydes with bergamot is a great start!
thank you for the lovely review and the draw!

  • Thank you soo much for sharing with us! I teared up,
Couldn’t help but smile while reading this and looking at the photos, at the same time thinking about my own mother and how she started me on my perfume journey.
Growing up, my mother wore Eternity by CK, and White diamond by Elizabeth Taylor. I will always have a soft spot for those scents even though I don’t wear them. We never forget what started it for us all. Thank you Roja & Cafleurebon !

  • The phrase, “it opens triumphantly with blindingly dazzling aldehydes” immediately sold me. And I love the name The Goodnight Kiss and the reasons behind it. Such a lovely concept for a beautiful perfume name. I like gracious living, something that we seem to be short of in today’s world where the loudest vulgar mouth wins the prize, so this sounds like a good antedote. (Sorry, too much news). My Mother was not much of a perfume wearer but she did enjoy Oscar from time to time. I am in the USA

  • Thank you Ida for the review and the giveaway. It was so nice of Roja to pay tribute to his mum and get inspired to share his gift with the world. I’ve only sampled Creation-E (Enigma) from his creations and loved it. I’ve also seen a video of him sharing the story of this inspiration on Sebastian’s Youtube channel. I remember my mum wearing a perfume called Yolanda though she isn’t much into perfumes. I’m in TX USA and would love to try A Goodnight Kiss.

  • jeremyn87 says:

The review makes it sound like the scent is reminiscent of old-school florals. I happen to really like them, and actually am wearing Chamade today.
I think the first one I remember my mom wearing was Nikki De Saint Phalle.
im in the US. thanks for the draw

  • The first perfume that I remember my mother wearing was Mugler’s Angel. And just as the article states, my olfactive memories are immediately triggered when I smell it in the air around me. Beautiful memories. (Commenting from USA.)

  • smellslikehappiness says:

Oh my goodness, I adore Roja and A Goodnight Kiss is one of my dream fragrances! I love the imagery, the love, the feeling of Mom with her elegant, glamorous beauty. Thank you for the draw, crossing my fingers for this dream to come true! Live in the US.

  • “utterly beautiful with wings” – what a beautiful sentiment! And such a lovely name for a perfume! I love the notes; particularly that there is rice powder accord in the drydown. That adds such a creamy, cosy feel to a perfume.
    I live in the US.

  • chrisskins says:

Ida and Roja’s memories of their mothers sweeping in, surrounded in a beautiful cloud of scent, for a “secret” kiss goodnight, brought memories of my own mother, on special nights. We didn’t have a lot of money, my father had just started his own business. My mother had one fancy dress, a periwinkle v-neck crepe sheath with a matching fabric flower where the vee ended. She wore it again and again and was stunning every time. We had one shared perfume, Woodhue. How a Caron made its way into the house is still a mystery. Watching her get ready and smelling that rich carnation scent confirmed what I already knew. My mother was the most beautiful woman in the world. I could only hope to capture a fraction of that magic when I grew up.

  • This fragrance sounds like a beauty! One of my favorite artists is Mary Cassatt! Loved the article and of course, beautiful descriptions by Ida. A goodnight kiss is just what I need! Thank you for the chance. USA

  • Thank you for the review and the draw. I especially loved reading Ida’s fragrance memories. I’ve collected several of the vintage drugstore scents my mom wore. It’s amazing how olfactory memories can take us back in time!

  • I had a chance to hear from Mr. Roja’s own mouth- the concept, the inspiration, the ideas, the memories, the thought process, etc….

I was blessed to try a 2.5ml or so sample from Osswald’s with an order about a year or more ago and it was incredible…. Rich, elegant, powdery, cocktails at an elaborate event worthy… Bravo Roja- definitely belongs in that that Purple Crystal elite grouping….

    Bottle worthy for sure!

  • My mother’s perfume was Jovan Musk. Now, she wears Alfred Sung. I will always think of her associated with these fragrances. I never liked her perfume growing up. I still dislike Sung. Ha ha! I was interested by the best of Chanel and Guerlain. I love Guerlain but not so much Chanel. This might be my hybrid! I’m in USA.

  • LORI LAWS says:

Excellent review and Ida captured A Goodnight Kiss so eloquently! What a beautiful tribute to Mr. Dove’s mother and I love the way she incorporated her mom’s story as well. I am a fan of aldehyde fragrances. My favorite part was: “Roja Parfums A Goodnight Kiss is emblematic of gracious living. • What a amazing, sensual review!
I was touched by story behind this perfume! I like Roja interpretation of old of new famous perfumes. I like aldehydes, and want to try this one. My mam perfume was Climat Lancome.

What I enjoyed most is the words of this review, painting a loving portrait of maternal engagement and also the way the child sees out into the world through the mother. Art, beauty, sensual pleasures, love, kindness, rareness, specialty. That you associate all of this with Roja’s A Goodnight Kiss makes me feel that his perfumery is soaring past his old limitations into art and emotion in a way it never has before. Thank you for this review.

It was really nice to read Ida’s memories of her mother via her perfume.
I still remember the smell of Dior’s Hypnotic Poison and Rochas Aquawoman from my mother’s collection.
