Roja Parfums Apex Parfum Review (Roja Dove) 2022 + A Matter of Proportions Giveaway

“Nature is so powerful, so strong. Capturing its essence is not easy – your work becomes a dance with light and the weather. It takes you to a place within yourself.” – Annie Leibovitz

In geometry, I was taught that most objects can have only one apex—the highest point, the pinnacle. In perfumery, I’m confident that there can be more than one Apex. Early last year, to much acclaim, Roja Dove released Apex Parfum Cologne , a refined-yet-adventurous fragrance inspired by the pulse of the jungle. Already an admirer (read: fanboy) of Mr. Dove’s work, I was instantly captivated by this curious green elixir which, as I exalted in my review, “reframes the architecture of refinement and re-establishes the exemplar.” If the Parfum Cologne is the new exemplar of the proverbial “powerhouse” fragrance, are there parts of this jungle left uncharted? Indeed, there are. With a deeper growl and deeper shades of green, a new Apex has arrived. Grab a torch and compass—let’s explore the newest release in the Apex realm: Roja Parfums Apex Parfum.

According to Mr. Dove, as expressed on the website Roja Parfums Apex Parfum “connects us to the earth and its spiritual energies, unleashing instincts and abilities that lay dormant within each of us”. Only when we embrace our connection to nature and our innermost instincts can we reach the Apex of our potential, becoming the best version of ourselves.” But is there a best version of Apex? Interestingly, the note listings for both Roja Parfums Apex Parfum and Parfum Cologne are identical. But to my nose, the proportions are vastly different. When describing the Parfum Cologne, I noted there’s a chordal strike to the opening which at once reveals top, middle and to some degree, basenotes all in tandem. It’s remarkable, actually, and seems to defy molecular science. Then, with a whoosh, the opening accords of lemon, bergamot, red mandarin and orange return to begin the evolution of the composition. The Parfum opens in a similar manner, but—if I were to momentarily exchange jungle metaphors for music—what was once a chamber orchestra is now a philharmonic.

The vibrant, crystalline opening lasts a bit longer in the Parfum Cologne; the freshness takes hold and remains throughout. The Parfum, on the other hand, opens with a similar brightness, but the light casts a shadow and the depth is immediate. Greens are darker, browns are richer. Amplified galbanum, elemi, patchouli, oakmoss, rum, tobacco and a touch of leather provide a no-nonsense gravity. Softer notes of sandalwood, amber, benzoin and musk emerge in delicate counterpoint; the wearer takes charge, not control. It’s muscular, but doesn’t flex. The Parfum, in my interpretation, leaves the jungle behind and as I’d likely wear this version in colder months, conjures images of wintry greens—fir balsam, juniper, even the Northern Lights.

In the vein of the Parfum Cologne, Roja Parfums Apex Parfum (in true Roja fashion) has a “modern vintage” vibe. Fans of ‘80’s and ‘90’s boardroom-bosses such as the original Ralph Lauren Polo, Patou Pour Homme or even the modern classic Italian Cypress from Tom Ford will likely appreciate Apex in either concentration. While both interpretations have excellent longevity and projection, the Parfum stays a bit closer to the skin and has slightly greater longevity at 12+ hours. Apex(s) was one of my 10 best perfumes of 2022.

Top Notes: Lemon, Bergamot, Mandarin, Orange; Heart Notes: Jasmine, Cistus, Pineapple; Base Notes: Galbanum, Elemi, Patchouli, Oakmoss, Rum, Tobacco, Cypress, Fir Balsam, Juniper Berry, Casmir Wood, Sandalwood, Benzoin, Amber, Frankincense, LabdanumLeather, Ambergris, Musk

  • Michael! ❤️❤️ The powerhouse green notes are SO appealing in this fragrance! Roja does know how to reimagine a vintage style for today! I Definitely would Love to experience this bold green fragrance (in this house, we Adore Polo Green, etc.). I’m not the biggest fan of the advertising subtext of the“Apex Predator” thing (what woman would be, ew), but the scent itself sounds Fantastic! Thank you for the opportunity!!! USA

I so loved the imagery and the description of the comparison between the opening of the two. I’m a huge fan of exploring a scent in different concentrations to see different nuances coming out. The sentence about “Greens greener and browns browner” in the parfum mirrors my experiences oftentimes with more lush extrait concentrations. I also loved the evocation of modern classics from the 80’s and 90’s. I love the idea of a modern composition that blends contemporary sensibilities with those vintage aesthetics. Thanks for the generous draw! I’m in the US.

The tandem of top, middle and basenotes is something I haven’t experienced in a perfume before and certainly intrigues me the most. I’m in the US.

  • I really like the Roja lines of fragrances. The longevity of these fragrances have really got me interested, especially so the citrus notes in this fragrance seem amazing for the warmer seasons yet the woody notes make it suitable for the winter as well. From TX, USA.

  • Apex sounds like something from the past with a modern influence. I love those types of fragrances. I wear a lot of classics regularly and would love to sample this. New Jersey, USA.

  • I love “modern vintage” perfumes and I have never sampled anything by Roja Dove: I would love to have a decant of Apex! Thanks for this lovely review and generous giveaway. I’m in WV, USA

The brilliance and balance that come with the concentration of accords, specifically incense, leather: pineapple and mandarin, bring an entirely new and focused dimension to the already appealing Apex EDP. The Parfum version presents a darker, more seductive woodiness, smokier, while still be vivid and intriguing.

I’m on a classic style perfumery kick lately and have been on a mission to try more fougeres, chypres, and styles that saw popularity pre-1990s. I’ve heard murmurings of similarities to Italian Cypress, Polo Green, and Halston Z-14, the latter of which are 2 of my favorites (haven’t smelled the TF). Would love to smell both of these to help me decide which concentration might be full bottle worthy and a fitting companion on the shelf to Enigma EDC.

  • Regis Monkton says:

I am very interested to try both concentrations of this fragrance. Roja Parfums “Elysium” is one of my favorite fragrances, and I also like “Creation-E”. I appreciate Michael’s review of them and I appreciate his generosity. Michael made “Apex” seem very interesting to me, and I’d love to try it. I live in MD, U.S.A.

  • Roja has always been a fragrance brand I wished to try. Rum and tobacco notes sound interesting in this! From Ct USA

  • You had me at vintage style. But looking at all this citrus, woods and green…., yes I’m fully intrigued! Sometimes when I see a long list of ingredients I worry a bit but never with Roja.

  • Oh boy! Roja Parfums is one of my favorite niche houses out there.
I am so intrigued by Apex for the green notes and the freshness it provides. I love that it is discribed as a modern vintange and it has an 80s and 90s perfumes vibes, just amazing.
I hope I win these decants.

  • I’ve yet to try one of Dove’s perfumes, but all the hype about Roja Parfumes has me intrigued, as does Michael’s glowing review. Michael’s comparison of both versions of Apex makes me think the Parfum version would be more to my tastes—”amplified galbanum, elemi, patchouli, oakmoss, rum, tobacco and a touch of leather provide a no-nonsense gravity”—but both sound like wonderful green fragrances and I’d like to try both. Either would be a good place to start with Roja Parfumes.

I’m in the contiguous U.S. Thanks for the giveaway!

  • I’d love to able to compare and contrast these two formulations of an amazing-sounding fragrance! I love the idea of something green and vintage-inspired but still modern. I’m in MN, USA

  • I enjoyed the comparisons between Roja Apex Parfum and Parfum cologne, and how they are described as modern vintage. Some of the vintage perfumes mentioned are indeed classic, and from the description in this review, Apex sounds classic too. I have not tried this brand before, as the prices are way too high. Thanks for the review and draw. From continental United States.

Apex sounds like a wonderful fragrance for the winter months. I love all those 80s and 90s powerhouses like Polo, so I am sure I will find pleasure wearing Apex. I enjoyed Michael’s description of the differences between the Parfum cologne and the Parfum.

Thanks for the nice review Michael.

I enjoyed reading about this fragranace. Lots of beautiful resin and green notes, with the pineapple being the most interesting. I do love the idea of reimagining the old vintage powerhouses (Paco Rabanne Pour Homme and Polo Green come to mind).

    Cheers from WI, ISA

  • Starting with that quote of one of my favorite photographers (Annie Leibovitz).

Roja Dove fragrances are those I can only have heard of.
    Richer browns, and darker greens.
I can’t wait to try Apex Roja, and hopefully, take the plunge and get it.

Lovely review! What intrigues me about Roja Parfums Apex Parfum is that the notes listings are identical to the Parfum Cologne but with vastly different, darker, and more intense proportions. I prefer darker fragrances with more depth so that sounds perfect for me. I live in the contiguous U.S.
