Roja Parfums Apex Review (Roja Dove) 2022 + Modern Tradition Giveaway

Roja Parfums Apex Review

The modernity of yesterday is the tradition of today, and the modernity of today will be tradition tomorrow.” – José Andrés

When I was about 17 years old, I started taking voice lessons. I was awed by powerhouse rock-and-roll belters, and I told my teacher that I wanted to sing like Dennis DeYoung of STYX or Steve Perry from Journey. A bold aspiration, like a bald man bringing a photo of Brad Pitt to the barber. Rather than tell me, “Don’t stop believing,” my expert instructor started working with me in a genre I was not expecting: opera. I was told that in order to learn a craft correctly, one must learn the classic form—the aggregate of technique, the foundation of all styles.

When I first experienced Apex, Roja Dove’s latest creation for Roja Parfums, I was reminded of this rule and further reminded why classically-trained Roja Dove is considered a master perfumer. In true Roja-style, Apex is an utterly “now” composition, a genre-bender built on a classical structure, that reframes the architecture of refinement and re-establishes the exemplar. Time-honored, but somehow, always—timeless. And wow, does it smell good.

It’s nearing a decade since I first discovered Roja’s extraordinary creations. Looking back at my 2013 CaFleureBon review of the first entries in his line of extraits, it’s clear I was instantly enamored with his work and since then, my respect and appreciation have grown immensely. Each year for my birthday, I treat myself to a lustrous Roja Dove creation. Needless to say, I was anxious to get my nose on Roja Parfums Apex, the newest entry in his excellent line of Parfum Colognes (eau de parfum concentration with the airy, fresh feel of a cologne).

Each bottle of Roja Parfums Apex includes a card of a spirit animal

According to Mr. Dove, as expressed on the Roja Parfums website, Roja Parfums Apex “connects us to Earth and its spiritual energies, unleashing instincts and abilities that lay dormant within each of us. Grounded in inspiration from the world’s Apex animals, this creation was designed to unearth your connection to nature’s most powerful creatures, pushing you to challenge your limits and open your eyes to new opportunities.” In line with the inspiration, each bottle of Apex comes with a collectible card suggesting the owner’s spirit animal. Mine came with a cobra.

Roja Parfums Apex opens with an orchestral strike of top, middle and base notes in chordal harmony, then an olfactive decrescendo, giving space to the vibrant top notes of red mandarin, lemon and a hint of tart pineapple. It’s fresh, friendly crystalline opening slowly segues to an assured and bold heart/ base of oakmoss, fir balsam, tobacco, rum, and leather. A sweet creaminess from the sandalwood emerges, bolstered by Roja’s signature labdanum and ambergris blend. I’m usually guarded around creamy-greenness in fragrance, but here the blend is organic and approachable. The composition remains green throughout, but the shades of green evolve—hiding and emerging like something behind the trees. While the creation might be considered traditionally masculine, I think Roja Parfums Apex would smell amazing on a woman. Perhaps the same woman who’d wear Roja’s Vetiver. Whoever’s wearing Apex will smell confident and refined, grounded in tradition while in step with the exceptional.

Top Notes: Bergamot, Red Mandarin, Orange

Heart Notes: Jasmine, Cistus, Pineapple

Base Notes: Galbanum, Elemi, Patchouli, Oakmoss, Rum, Tobacco, Cypress, Fir Balsam, Juniper Berry, Casmir Wood, Sandalwood, Benzoin, AmberFrankincense, LabdanumLeather, Ambergris, Musk

It’s cool reading a review of someone who has been a fan of Roja for so long. This one sounds nice. I’d love to try!

  • I enjoyed Roja Fragrances so much, being Oceania my favorites. The house never dissapoints me and I am always waiting for new fragrances.
I think this fragrance would be amazing to my collection, because of the fresh start, then developing into something heavier with the oakmoss, tobbaco and leather.
    USA here.

  • I have been looking at this fragrance for awhile. When Michael mentions the combo of oakmoss, fir balsam, tobacco, rum, and leather….I’m sold. Hopefully winning this gives me a reason to pull the trigger on buying a bottle

  • I haven’t tried anything by this house, but I love ideas about how tradition informs contemporary art and am therefore intrigued! I also appreciate a traditional cologne structure, and the way it’s played with here sounds lovely.

  • I have three Roja Parfums-Vetiver, Creation E and Enigma.
I have been on the fence about Apex but I love the idea that green peaks in and out throughout. Enjoyed the review and thanks for the giveaway Michael

  • I enjoyed reading Mr. Dove’s inspiration as taken from his website.
    I don’t have a house fave. US

  • Thanks to Michael for a glowing review of Roja Parfums Apex and his kindness in sharing a decant from his own collection for this draw. I have heard so much about Roja Parfums but never got to try any, mainly because they are quite expensive. I am intrigued by Apex for its earthy nature and of course by the genius who designed it, namely, Roja Dove. Thanks for the review and a generous draw. I am from the USA.

  • I’ve always found Roja perfumes to be so amazingly composed that I can never pinpoint specific notes. Again, this scent seems to be masterfully composed. In maryland.

  • Really enjoyed Michael’s intro and connection to the Roja house. This fragrance sounds quite interesting to me, I’m curious to smell the creamy greenness that was described. I think my favorite from the house thus far is Elysium.

    Thanks!

  • Thank you Michael for the awesome review and for offering to share from your own bottle so a lucky reader can experience the beauty. I agree that Roja is a master perfumer since I’ve been awestruck by every one of his creations that I’ve smelt with the runaway champion for me being Creation-E followed by Elysium. I’m in USA

  • I really enjoyed the description of the different shades of green in this fragrance! I would love to try it. So far the only one I’ve tried is Creation-R and I’ve been hoarding my small sample I’m in MN, USA.

  • Thank you for the review, Michael. I’m pretty new to this hobby, so I don’t have much awareness of classical structure or what is the historical exemplar of any given genre, so I enjoyed reading what you feel makes Apex time-honored and timeless. Apex also sounds like a juicy and complex fragrance, despite also being green in the heart and base. I haven’t tried any Roja perfumes—this one sounds like a good place to start.

    I’m in the midwest, USA.

  • I am Roja Parfum big fan and it was very pleasure to read this review!
I haven’t tried this perfume, but love description – sounds beautiful green perfume!!!

From Roja Parfums, I’ve only tried “Elysium” and “Creation-E”: I enjoy both of them, and “Elysium” is one of my favorite fragrances. I’ve never tried “Apex” and I appreciate Michael’s description of it and his generosity. I live in the U.S.A.

  • The image of shifting greens, like something moving hidden through the jungle is wonderful! I have not yet sampled any of the Roja fragrances, though I have heard great things.

  • thee_boy_wonder says:

I feel like Roja never misses!! I like how Michael walked us through the journey of this fragrance and the intentions behind the scent.

Thanks for the nice writeup Michael.

Roja Dove is such an interesting perfumer. I remember the launch of the gardenia, vetiver and I think Neroli extraits from back in the day and it’s crazy to see some of the Guerlain experience transform into these fragrances (I’m thinking of the signature labdanum).

This fragrance sounds like a wonderfully classical fragrance. The concept of having a card that is sort of like a horoscope card is quite interesting.

    Cheers from WI, USA
