Shivoo:

1) a party, celebration

2) a disturbance, a rowdy party ~ Urban Dictionary

Well, my friends, the time has come
To raise the roof and have some fun
Throw away the work to be done
Let the music play on (play on, play on, play on…)
Everybody sing, everybody dance
Lose yourself in wild romance
We’re going to Party, Karamu, Fiesta, forever
Come on and sing along! ~ from Lionel Richie, All Night Long (1983)

Charna Ethier of Providence Perfume Co.

Artisan botanical perfumer Charna Ethier of Providence Perfume Co. is known for composing archetypal natural fragrances which satisfy our collective craving for art + wearability. It is fair to say that Charna is a true American original, and her work reflects this. She first began her career as a perfumer in 2009, and has been inflaming our imaginations ever since; her fragrant releases have found a grateful audience Providence Perfume Co Shivoo, is indeed gourmand in nature – but à la Charna – meaning that it bears the perfumer’s stamp of originality and exquisite materials, no expense spared. It’s a party in a bottle: the party may be raucous and raise the roof, but that doesn’t preclude a certain sophistication.

Providence Perfume Co. Shivoo is defined as a rowdy party or gathering, and is thought to be derived from the French phrase “chez vous”, meaning “your house”, or “at your house.” The word shivoo pops up in Australian conversation, and was in usage in 18th C. England: all the rest is conjecture. Charna wanted to create something festive and playful for this celebratory season, and Shivoo fills the bill nicely: wonderfully familiar, but with that unexpected twist which distinguishes Charna from the herd.

It’s no mystery that roses and raspberries have long been an item: they share certain innate characteristics and complete one another. When they mingle, it’s as if the rose expands and fleshes out its fruity rondeur. This is how Providence Perfume Co Shivoo commences – gaily and effusively, liberally sprinkled with a very epicurian cocoa note. In fact, the entire composition of Shivoo consists of rose’s beloved compadres; there’s not one amongst them which isn’t a perfect fit. Rose-chocolate, rose-patchouli, rose-amber, rose-ambrette: take your pick, or not – as each of these aromatic voices are included, saving you the conundrum of having to choose just one. Even if you feel these particular rose combinations have wearied your senses, you’ll do well to reassess: simply because lists of notes may appear similar does not mean that the fragrances which share them will smell alike. (I cannot emphasize this enough, and believe that this is a popular misconception.) The charm of Providence Perfume Co. Shivoo lies in Charna’s ability to render a conventional concept fresh and exhilarating. Shivoo possesses a modern sensibility while retaining the beauty of the early Les Parfums de Rosine (many who have experienced them find the older Rosines to be wistfully entrancing and chockablock with gorgeous botanical materials). Providence Perfume Co. Shivoo might be just what you’re looking for to kick-start the holiday season. N.B. – beware those who might be tempted to nibble you when you wear this… Notes: raspberry, rose, cocoa, amber , patchouli, botanical musk

Sample provided by the perfumer – many thanks! It’s delicious. My nose is my own…

  • Gourmand style fragrances was the first style I bought for myself. I also have worked in the food industry for 20+ years so it is natural for me to smell like food. The house sounds very much right up my ale. Thank you for the opportunity.

  • What strikes me about Providence Perfume Co. Shivoo is how Charna Ethier wanted to create something playful and festive for the celebratory season, and Shivoo filled the bill. I’ve never tried any from this brand. Thank you for the opportunity. New York, USA.

  • I love the dance between raspberry and rose and the contrast with chocolate. What a fun concoction!

  • Lisa Collins says:

I love the dance between Rose and all the grounding notes especially amber and I cannot wait to scent how it plays out on the skin.

  • I’m typically more drawn to the basenotes and dry down in perfumes than the top notes. And Shivoo sounds right up my alley with amber, patchouli, and botanical musk. And as Ida says, pairing any of these with rose is a perfect fit. And also as Ida mentions – just because these combinations have been done and done doesn’t mean they can’t be done in novel ways. I’m very curious about how these combinations play out in a fresh way in Shivoo.
I’ve yet to try any raspberry-dominant perfumes – but if possible I’d love to remedy that (Raspberry-rose-chocolate sounds too delicious to miss)!
    Best wishes from NJ, USA!

I would like to try some of the fragrances from Providence Perfume Co., and “Shivoo” seems to be one of them. I like to hear that it’s a “party in a bottle” and that it’s also sophisticated at the same time. I love a lot of the different pairings there are with rose, and I’m very interested to see how the rose in Providence Perfume Co. “Shivoo” pairs with those notes it traditionally pairs well with. I like hearing that it “possesses a modern sensibility while retaining the beauty of the early Les Parfums de Rosine”. I live in the U.S.A.

  • Hello from Florida, and thank you to Ida for the review!

I love Charna Ethier’s work, and Shivoo sounds like such a beautiful combination of raspberry, cocoa, rose, and musk. I’d love to give it a try!

  • This sounds like a fragrance for a New Year’s eve celebration or looking forward, maybe even Valentine’s day given the rose chocolate focus. The raspberry and rose combined with the gourmand notes and patchouli and musk base sound delightful. I’m most interested in that high quality cocoa note. I’m in MD, USA.

  • I have been curious about Providence Perfume Co. for a while now, but haven’t tried anything yet. It sounds like Shivoo would be a gorgeous introduction to the brand. I am usually not a big fan of gourmands, but as I read Ida’s review Shivoo started to sound like something I would like to wear, despite it’s “edible” aspects! Rose and all her friends…yes, please.

Shivoo sounds so fun to wear. Its joyfulness and playfulness is so needed at this time. Raspberry, rose and chocolate sound like an irresistible combination. I would like to be invited to this house party. I haven’t trued anything from Providence Perfume Co.
    I live in the USA.

  • David Furman says:

I don’t have any true experience with raspberry in perfumery. I have Tuscan Leather but it’s so strong and has so much going on I don’t really get it. A real sweet and lively vibe is what I expect from this one. Great for colder weather and I would love to know how the rose and chocolate factor into the balance. Rich and seductive is what I imagine. Hope I win the travel size, from Jacksonville NC.

  • This sounds delicious! Rose and raspberry. I have loved the Providence perfumes I have tried. HINDU honeysuckle for one. I am in the US

  • Ahhh raspberry and rose, a very pleasing combo indeed! However, pointing out the fact that all of the notes involved I have been fans in rose perfumes sealed the deal for me! I haven’t tried anything from this house before, but I’ve been following them for a while as there are many fragrances in their catalog that sound right up my alley. I live in the USA. Thanks for the giveaway.

THanks for the great review Ida.

I find it interesting that the fragrance is a nods to historical origins from “chez vous,” and mirrors a spirited celebration with a refined twist.

The use of raspberry, rose, and cocoa notes, setting a jubilant tone. In particular, I find the use of rose and raspberry fascinating, defying the assumption that similar notes mean similar fragrances.

This creation harmonizes modern flair with the allure of early botanical perfumery and heralds the holiday season, a delectable blend that might attract unwarranted attention for its irresistible charm.

    Cheers from WI, USA

  • Thanks for the review, Ina. Fun name for a fun composition. That reliable rose-raspberry combo is sharp and attention-grabbing, and both cocoa and patchouli are smart companions for earthy balance. I’m curious how sweet Shivoo is; I’m more intrigued if it’s tuned a little bit more towards the bite of the raspberry and musk in the base.

I’m in the USA. My favorite of Charna’s perfumes is Heart of Darkness, and Lapsang Lover is very well done as well.

  • Since Shivoo was released, I knew I needed to try it. I was especially intrigued since it’s from Providence Perfume Co; I didn’t expect to see that kind of gourmand, so I am sure it’s amazing. I enjoy rose and raspberry when paired together, but they’re even more delicious when combined with cocoa. I loved reading Ida’s comments about the multi-faceted rose in Shivoo and the comparison to the early Les Parfums de Rosine fragrances (some of my favorites). Overall, Shivoo sounds delicious and I would love to own a travel-size flacon of it. My favorite fragrance from Providence Perfume Co. is Love-In-A-Mist; such a beautiful spring floral. Thank you, Ida, for the great review, and thank you to Charna Ethier for the giveaway. I am located in the USA.

The raspberry and rose combined with the gourmand notes and patchouli and musk base sound amazing.

  • I recently purchased Shivoo at Providence Perfume and I absolutely adore it! It is complex and beautiful….with outstanding staying power…..exceptional for a botanical fragrance. I’ve been a fan of Charna’s for a longtime and I think this new composition might be my all-time favorite.
If you love unique beautiful perfumes you will love Shivoo!!!
