Phoenix Botanicals In The Pines Review (Irina Adam) 2019 + Enchanted Coastal Terrain Draw

PHOENIX Botanicals In the Pines by irina Adam review

Natural Perfumer Irina Adam of Phoenix Botanicals amasses inspiration from neighboring environs, local micro-enclaves of natural beauty. One of her more recent releases, In The Pines –  probes the Long Island pine barrens (Irina refers to it as “an enchanted coastal terrain”), resplendent with the sap of conifers, oak wood and birch peppered with blooming yellow heather. It is a scrubby, windswept landscape in which native flora adapt to buffeting air currents and salinity – tree trunks twisted this way and that, gnarled through relentless transfiguration. That which is predisposed to flourish does: moss, grasses of varying heights, a mixed deciduous forest. City dwellers must seek out respite as they can, and fortunately one may find many such oases quite close to NYC (consider Frederick Law Olmsted’s contributions – NYC’s renowned Central Park, Prospect Park in Brooklyn, for example). Phoenix Botanicals in the Pines spirits you away from daily devoirs with a well-placed dab or two.

In The Pines commences with an initial spicy citrus accord, as a sunlit shaft of conifer-inflected mandarin intrigues your nostrils (or so it smells!). Shortly thereafter an intimate herbal/floral tone makes its subtle presence known, infused with wispy birch tar. Wispy birch tar? Yes, there is such a note if you are Irina Adam; her perfumes are nothing if not delicately artistic. It is unlikely that you would handle palo santo with such aplomb, showcasing its creaminess – or that oud would be employed with the merest caress. Pine pitch in her hands is but a wraith trailing upon the wind’s coattails; oak is insinuated, an olfactory sotto voce humming sound.

Best pine fragrances

In The Pines resembles a bashful eau-de-vie: with its feathery amber and traces of berry it develops into an attenuated Retsina (a Greek white wine infused with Aleppo Pine sap) aroma which feels salty and comforting. Its discreet resinous personality is easily worn and sits very close to the flesh; one has to lean in in order to appreciate it fully. For those who crave sillage, this would not be a favored choice – but if you delight in a more personal pleasure, In The Pines would be most welcome. Being a sylvan creature by design, I find it graceful and gracious.

Notes: pine bouquet, heather accord, juniper, palo santo, birch, berry, amber, oudh, pine pitch, oak

5 ml flacon kindly provided by the perfumer, Irina Adam – many thanks!  My nose is my own…

  • I’m delighted by the numerous sweet fruit berries supporting this fragrance’s coniferous backbone. Two dabs would be all I need to be engulfed in sweet forest goodness. I have never smelled any of this house’s creations. (Commenting from FL, USA)

  • Thank you Ida for the review and Irina Adam for the giveaway. I like the pine note and would love to experience how Irina has worked it into “In the Pines”. This note brings back childhood memories of being inundated by pine forest smells on a particular day at a very windy location. I’ve not yet tried any Phoenix Botanical’s perfumes but this would be a good start. I’m in the USA

  • This sounds like a beautiful and unusual creation inspired by pine in Long Island and Central Park. I am not familiar with the scents from this line but I would love to try them. I live in the USA.

  • This sounds amazing, would truly love to smell that pine. With its initial spicy citrus got me wanting to try this one. Nice description by Ida, haven’t tried anything by this house before. Living in the EU

  • Sometimes you want to carefully listen to the silent voices, this one seems to be just that. Would love to win this to Germany, especially since I never encountered a PB scent. Thanks for the draw!

  • I am triggered by the promise of this perfume to deliver natural, real forest freshness. Sometimes a close sillage and natural elements can provide true comfort. I have never tried any Phoenix Botanicals fragrance. Would love to try this one, from the EU.

  • I am really intrigued by the note breakdown and fascinated by Irina Adam an artist and herbalist I have not tried anything by phoenix botanicals but I am really interested in this house. Cheers from UK

  • I am really intrigued by the pine bouquet and pine pitch oak notes. I have not tried anything by Irina Adam but I am going to explore this house. Thanks from UK

  • I just adore woody scents – a natural one is definitely a plus for me! The scent of the forest is one of the most loved scents for us humans, from all the times. A low, creamy sillage of pine, heather and birch tar must be so comforting. I haven’t tried anything from Phoenix Botanicals but thank you for the chance! I am from EU.

Love the Pine Barrens, that gorgeous photo of sap, and the sound of the notes. I also loved the description of a “bashful eau de vie.” I haven’t tried any Phoenix Botanicals scent, but I would love to try this one. Thanks for the draw! I’m in the US.

  • bigscoundrel says:

I would love this close-wearing fragrance for times where sillage is not good. I’m in the USA.

  • The Pine Barrens are one of the most magical places, and one to which I often journey in my mind. Having a Pine Barrens scent that sits close to the skin as a small secret is just what I need some days.

Natural perfumes have always appealed to my sensibilities because of the countries that I grew up in as a child. Modern western fragrances were largely unknown and traditional perfumes were based on oils and distillation practices that were handed down over generations. Every perfume thus captured the terroir of the materials that they were made of.
Ida’s review takes me back to my childhood and I enjoyed reading about the ingredients and the pictures in the review.
I haven’t had a chance to smell a Phoenix Botanicals perfume before, hence I don’t have a favourite (though this does sound wonderful).

    Love from Madison, WI.

  • Sounds like the smell on the countryside… The smell i grew up with in my home country. Thank you for review, my Madame, and thanks Irina for the generous giveaway.

I lived in the tristate area for years, but never made it out to the Long Island pine barrens. The resinous aspect of this fragrance sounds very alluring. I absolutely love birch tar. I have only tried Lilac Rain from Phoenix Botanicals. It is a masterpiece.
    I live in the USA,

  • The combination of pine and heather with the fruity berry sounds amazing, like a mini-forest vacation with every whiff. Lovely! USA

  • An enchanted coastal land sounds like a Scandinavian shore line to me. A place where all the scents that are not pines or ocean go away. This is the image that the review brought to my mind. I live in the EU

  • When I read Ida’s review, I felt I was wandering through a sunny forest, smelling all sorts of fragrances, from pine to birch, from juniper to retsina. I think Irina Adam created a very interesting fragrance. I am very curious to try a Phoenix Botanicals perfume. I live in Romania.

  • Pine sap is so aromatic! I enjoy walking through the woods and sniffing all the scents it has to offer. I would enjoy this immensely. Thanks for the opportunity! USA

  • As someone who’s always been fascinated by trees, I’d love to try In the Pines. Ida makes it sound like a perfect perfume for a meditation or a quiet evening. Besides, it reminds me of the old Ledbelly song.
No favourites from Phoenix Botanicals yet, because I haven’t tried any. Fingers crossed it’ll change.

I’ve enjoyed a number if Irina’s creations, but this is one from Phoenix Botanicals that I haven’t tried. I like the comparison to a Retsina, a wine I’d never heard of but that sounds wonderful (I wonder if I could find it here in the states?). My very favorite Phoenix Botanicals perfume is Apple Iris Root. I’ve been wearing it a lot this late summer… it is like being wrapped in a gossamer scarf, comforting but not smothering. I LOVE it. Thank you for this very generous draw!

  • patrick_348 says:

This sounds like a perfect fragrance for this time of year. I like how Ida works to capture the complexity of the scent. And anything that smells of retsina sounds good to me! I don’t know any of Phoenix Botanical’s perfumes.

  • As someone who was complimented on her perfume at a drive-thru milk place today, “Hey, nice car air freshener!” (Baccarat Rouge!) I am ready for a natural scent. I live across the bay from The Pines and would love to sample this scent. I live in NY.

  • Billiestimpson says:

I always like the appeal to scents that are highly discreet, it feels like an opportunity to develop a more intimate relationship to a scent as it interacts with your body. I also especially love a forresty birch scent and would love to inhabit the small world that this perfume seeks to honour ^_^

  • Your reviews are always very well done but it was actually the first photo (the one with arms wrapping around an unusual-looking palm tree) that captivated me to read on. Thank you CaFleureBon for introducing this brand to me. Would love to check this out. Regards from Boston, USA

  • This fragrance sounds wonderfully! I love natural perfumes very, very much. The review is fabulous. I have never had a chance to try anything from this brand. Thank you for the chance. I live in Europe.

  • I love anything pine and woody smelling. C an imagine myself laying right beside you in the picture. Have not heard of the Phoenix Botanicals perfume line. Midwest USA

  • Love Birch tar! This fragrance sounds so beautiful and outdoorsy. “Pine pitch in her hands is but a wraith trailing upon the wind’s coattails; oak is insinuated, an olfactory sotto voce humming sound.” Lovely! Would love to try, have not tried this brand. USA

  • I love these notes, but can’t imagine them gentle. I really liked this: Pine pitch in her hands is but a wraith trailing upon the wind’s coattails. I never heard of this house or tried them. I am in USA.

  • Michael Prince says:

Ida, this sounds like a woody masterpiece. Phoenix Botanicals in the Pines sounds like it would be walking through a desolate forest with all the greenery. I don’t have a favorite Phoenix Botanicals perfume because I haven’t tried anything from this house. I am from the USA.

  • Excellent review from Ida I loved the description of the notes of pine and how the mandarin intrigues the nostrils. I would love to get my nostrils on this fragrance. I live in CA, USA.

  • I find it very interesting that these typically heavy notes are utilized in discreet and feathery fragrance. I love the scent of pine forests and being from the same general region as Long Island this scent intrigues me. Thank you for the lovely review and draw. I’m in the US.

  • I’m so intrigued! Love Ida’s description of the respite of the scent…the moss, grasses, trees. I’m in CA. Haven’t smelled Phoenix Botanicals line before.

  • MissJanners says:

This sounds incredible. I once rode on the back of a motorcycle through a mountain forest, and I have been searching for a scent that captures what that felt like. The images in this post are so evocative. I would like to know what wispy birch tar smells like as well.
    I’m in Canada.

  • Ida’s commentary on “Wispy Birch Tar” was well done. I do not yet have a favorite Phoenix Botanicals perfume. USA
