Parfums de Nicolai New York Intense Review (Patricia de Nicolaï) + Urban Oasis Draw

Nicolaï Parfumeur-Créateur New York Intense review

When my Editor-in-chief asked me which fragrance I’d like as a birthday present, it surprisingly took me only a minute to answer: that would be Parfums de Nicolai New York Intense. Just a few days before I had finally tested the scent properly, and I was blown away by the fact that it seemed to be even better than the original 1989 New-York (which I loved). Due to the IFRA restrictions on oakmoss and citruses, several fragrance lovers felt that the reformulated New-York EdT had become a tad too faint. Patricia de Nicolaï, like a modern alchemist, worked her magic: in 2014 she presented her New York Intense, an EdP that fully restored the glory of her initial creation.

Although a member of the Guerlain family, a formally trained and talented perfumer, as well as the first female recipient of the “Best Young Perfumer” Award of the Société Française des Parfumeurs, Patricia de Nicolaï was never given the chance to continue the Guerlain tradition as an in-house perfumer. However, that did not prevent her from emerging as one of the greatest contemporary “noses”. With the encouragement of her husband, Jean-Louis Michau, she started her own company – Parfums de Nicolaï – in 1989, just a few years before Guerlain would be sold to the LVMH group. Always graceful, Mme de Nicolaï has repeatedly acknowledged the fascinating creative atmosphere in which she grew up, living in the Guerlain family “Hôtel Particulier”, and the olfactory stimuli of the first 20 years of her life there. Parfums de Nicolaï was one of the very first brands to place the perfumer-creator in the spotlight, and Patricia de Nicolaï’s own creations include some of the most beautiful “traditionally original” (as she likes to call her style) fragrances of the last 30 years. In addition to all these, she’s been a most successful President of L’Osmothèque (the famous Versailles-based perfume conservatory) since 2008.

Parfums de Nicolai New York Intense review

Nicolaï New-York was launched in 1989, and it was based on an unsold formula that Patricia de Nicolaï had created when she was still a perfumer at Quest (now Givaudan). The 2014 New York Intense EdP is essentially the pre-reformulation New-York, but even deeper, richer, rounder. It opens with spectacularly bright, zesty citruses (lemon, bergamot, petitgrain), combined with herbaceous thyme and absinthe-like artemisia. The glorious oakmoss – dark, earthy, and mysterious (as it should be) – is to me perceptible right from the start, only increasing in depth. A sprinkle of pepper, cinnamon and (mostly) clove adds warmth and intensity to the composition, while the floralcy of top-quality lavender provides an interesting counterpoint. The gorgeous heart of Parfums de Nicolai New York Intense blends into perfection with the complex base of vanilla, incense, styrax, patchouli and musk, resulting into fascinating olfactory synergies that range from spicy citruses to lemon cake-like amber. A distinctive earthy/herbal character is present throughout the fragrance’s evolution, along with discreet animalic undertones (civet, castoreum), and powdery nuances. The sillage of Parfums de Nicolai New York Intense is impressive, and the scent’s longevity easily reaches 10 hours.

Parfums de Nicolai New York was named for Patricia de Nicolai's sister who lived in NYC

Let it be noted that the fragrance’s name has puzzled many perfume aficionados over the years, for “New York” was a rather unexpected choice for a scent so rich in natural ingredients, so far removed from images of the “Big Apple’s” skyscrapers and urban landscapes. The brand does make an association between the energy of the scent, and of the “city that never sleeps”; Mme de Nicolaï has, however, mentioned that she named her fragrance “New York” because she missed her dear sister who had been living in the U.S. metropolis for many years. As a loving olfactory tribute of a Parisian perfumer to her beloved, far-away sister, as a scented letter of love that bridges the Atlantic filled with fragrant memories, the name suddenly makes lots of sense.

Central Park, N.Y.C. (Photo: Scott Dunn/Getty Images)©

In her New York Intense, Patricia de Nicolaï fuses together the cologne, chypre, fougère, oriental and aromatic genre into a seamless composition of extraordinary radiance and admirable balance, infused with a retro touch, a bien-être aura, and lots of soul. Although it’s often compared to Guerlain Habit Rouge, Héritage and Derby, Chanel Pour Monsieur, Boucheron Pour Homme and Jaipur Homme, or Creed Bois du Portugal, New York Intense is instantly, and unmistakably, recognizable. Although I sometimes selfishly wish it won’t become too popular, I’m always delighted to smell it on men. It makes for an effortlessly classy, timelessly elegant, self-assured but never cocky, masculine scent – but it’s also spectacular on women. Parfums de Nicolai New York Intense does for the wearer what Central Park does for New Yorkers: it’s a breathing, seemingly timeless, oasis in the middle of urban reality.

Notes: Petitgrain Citronnier, Bergamot, Lemon, Thyme, Artemisia; Black Pepper, Clove, Cinnamon, Lavender, Chamomile; Oakmoss, Vanilla, Styrax, Incense, Musk, Civet, Castoreum.

Disclaimer: This review was based on a bottle of Parfums de Nicolai New York Intense that was gifted to me for my birthday. The opinions are my own.

  • I too love the original 1989 of this fragrance. Despina says she loves this reform even better. I would love to win this. Good to know exactly where the name New York came from. US

  • BostonScentGuy says:

I loved hearing about the origin of the name of this scent. I also feel Despina captured its shapeshifting character well! New York is, indeed, my favorite Nicolai scent and I’d love to experience the intense version. Thanks so much for the draw. I’m in the US.

  • I have a discovery set of Parfums de Nicolai and I love every single one of them, including New York Intense <3 Love when Derpina says that this fragrance is an oasis to the wearer as Central Park is for New Yorkers 🙂 My favorite fragrances of Nicolai are: New York Intense, Musc Intense and Kiss me Intense <3 (USA)

  • I have never tried anything from Parfums de Nicolai. New York Intense sounds very unusual but nice from the base of the notes. Thanks for the chance. I live in Europe.

  • It’s absolutely true to mention that this fragrance combines several classic fragrances genres at once. I had a sample of it a few years ago and found it very fascinating and appealing, but a bit too mature/oldschool for me (I was in my mid-twenties). Now, having tried many more niche fragrances, I’d love to revisit it again.
    Best wishes from Germany

  • Symbian Pandora says:

I remember the pre-form from when I owned a bottle. I get the connection with the Chanel because that was always my thought, a deeper and richer Pour Monsieur.
Once I ran a-dry, I did not purchase again due to the re-form. As a matter of fact, there are many scents that I owned, and once the reformulations appeared, not up to snuff.
I am happy the intense version is as good as the original.
    I am in the USA

  • As Despina has noted, New York Intense really is radiant. This kind of perfume (Pour Monsieur, Sous le vent, Philtre d’amour et al.) could be likened to a ray of sunlight in the forest. It’s not even surprising that NYI has stood the test of time. It might be my favourite de Nicolai scent.

    I live in Russia

  • I love the fragrances of Parfums de Nicolai and New York Intense sounds lovely. It appeals to my sentimental side that Mme de Nicolaï named it for her beloved sister who was living in New York. A favorite is Le Temps d’une Fête (sadly discontinued). I also love Un Coeur en Mai which she created for MDCI Parfums. USA.

  • I love New York Intense. Thanks to Despina now I know where this name came from, as well as the fact that it was an unsold formula back when Mme de Nicolaï was working for big companies. I have many favourites from Nicolaï: NYI, Sacrebleu Intense, Le Temps d’une Fête…

Thanks for the draw! I live in EU.

  • Based on a few samples I’ve recently purchased, New York Intense is by far my favorite from the house, with Cuir Cuba Intense being a distant, but still excellent, second. Once I began collecting, I didn’t think I wanted a signature scent, but New York Intense may well change that. I appreciate that Despina explained the origin of the fragrance’s name, as it felt a bit uninspired before, but now it makes much more sense. – Los Angeles, CA

  • it is a perfume that I want to buy for a long time but every time I postpone my choice I would like to finally own a bottle I like a lot Patchouli intense, Neroli intense, and Encens oud by Pnicolai. I love oak moss as in Bandit by Robert Piguet, citrus and green scents (Le Sillage blanc by Dusita), lavender for men as Boy and Jersey by Chanel. I live in France.

  • Happiest of Birthdays Ms Despina! I liked that Ms Nicholai named her perfume New York to honor her sister. The notes sound wonderful, especially the clove and oakmoss. Thanks for the opportunity to sniff! USA

  • I never tried some perfume from Parfums de Nicolai, but New York Intense sounds great. This review is very cool and I love the story beside the perfume. I imagine it truly intense, like the NY. Greetings from Romania (EU).

  • What a gorgeous blend of notes. I loved that this perfume is made of many natural ingredients and yet the name is misleading. I believe it can be a good challenge for thought though. New York can, and has once been oakmoss, thyme and pepper. We better not forget that. I also love the blend of notes. Earthy and green, with addition of spices and freshness from the citrus. This would be my first Parfums de Nicolai experience. Thanks for the chance! From Romania.

  • Doni Light says:

Neroli Intense is a summer stunner from the house, but the combination of cologne, fougere, chypre and oriental in New York Intense sound irresistible as a year-round staple. Great to hear from Despina that it smells great on us guys, but I’m even more glad tto hear that it lasts. And eventhough I shy away from words like ‘animalic’ or ‘powdery’, somehow I think Patricia got it right in this one. Canada.

  • This is one of my favorite scents along with L’Eau De Sport. Interesting story about Madam Nicolaï. I did not know she worked for Guerlain. I went to her store in New York one time and just misses it closing for the evening. Was so disappointed. I like how personal the name New York came about. At any rate a favorite by miles. Thanks for a beautiful draw. In the USA. Loved the link Michelyn.

  • This house has been on my list to sample since I have been reading and hearing so many good things. Great article! The notes in this are right up my alley. Thank you for the draw! US.

  • This is a fragrance that seems to be exuding opulence. Anytime I hear of a fragrance that bears the name New York, I’m inclined to think of something grand and showstopping. And being that this bottle was requested by the reviewer as a birthday gift, I know that this fragrance is just that! (Commenting from FL, USA)

  • RobertNicolasB says:

It was great learning about the origin of the name. I’ve read many great reviews on New York Intense and have wanted to get my nose on it for some time. I don’t have any experience with Parfums de Nicolai, but hope to change that soon. Thanks for the opportunity!

  • Thank you Despina for another wonderful review and the giveaway opportunity. You do have a way with words 🙂 I’ve not yet sampled New York Intense though I was intrigued to learn it had one of the highest scores from Luca Turin in his new book. This review gives a good impression of what to expect from it and I’d be thrilled to try it out. I’m in TX USA

What a beautiful story behind the fragrance. Also, thank you for the detailed description of the scent’s evolution. I have not had the privilege of sampling any Parfums de Nicolai fragrances, but it has definitely been on my bucket list for a while now.
Thanks for the giveaway! I’m in Canada.

  • Harbinger says:

I really enjoyed this review and found the origin of the name interesting. Good to know that it’s a unisex fragrance as I always assumed it was masculine. I would love to try it now based on this amazing review and it would be a great introduction for me into the perfumes of this niche house..thanks for the opportunity. USA.

  • I have so many Nicolai perfumes but not New York or New York Intense. I have Cap Neroli, Fig Tea and kiss me tender are among my favorites. Despina’s explanation of the name and that she got New York Intense as a birthday present. I can smell it from here by her wonderful description. I am in the USA

  • Would love to try this, especially since Despina said it smells great on guys. It also happens to include some of my favorite notes, like lavender, incense and clove. Never tried This house. From EU

  • I LOVE NYI! One of my all time favorites. I would be thrilled to enter the draw for this. Despina thank you for more insight on this lovely scent. Canada.

  • Thanks for a wonderful review, Despina! I love your description of the scent- ‘fuses together the cologne, chypre, fougère, oriental and aromatic genre into a seamless composition of extraordinary radiance and admirable balance, infused with a retro touch, a bien-être aura, and lots of soul… it’s a breathing, seemingly timeless, oasis in the middle of urban reality.’ Sounds like an amazing scent! Thanks for this opportunity. – CA, USA

  • This is a fantastic article that tells the story of a truly inspiring nose, Mme de Nicolaï. I’ve had the pleasure of sampling other fragrances from her line and I am very drawn to this particular perfume that seems to blend so many olfactory qualities into one. I appreciate the opportunity to win and I live in the USA.

  • Great review. I’ve always wondered why it was called New York. That explains so much. I love the old version, but haven’t smelled the intense. I’d love to win it. I’m in the US.

  • smellslikehappiness says:

I’ve heard so much about Parfums de Nicolai, and after reading Despina’s review I’m more excited than ever to try them! Thanks for the draw, live in the US.

I love the comparison to the feel of Central Park in NY. My favourite from Nicolai so far is Kiss Me Intense. I am from Sweden.

  • I have wanted to sample this perfume since first learning of it, but have not yet had the opportunity. I enjoyed learning the origin of the name in this well written review. No favorites from the house, but this one intrigues me the most. Cheers from Oregon!

  • Nathan Cherry says:

Loved Despina’s review – great writing and great story! It was great to hear the origin of this legendary fragrance and how it was updated for the modern day. I unfortunately have not had the chance to try any fragrances from Parfums de Nicolai, but I’ve always been intrigued by the brand and have been itching to sample some of their fragrances. This giveaway would be a great chance to do just that. USA.

  • Mihaela Ungureanu says:

I don’t have in mind a specific De Nicolai scent, although I tested a few of these fragrances two weeks ago. I just want to have this one because Despina loves it after reform and this is quite rare nowadays. Greetings from România!

  • roxhas1cat says:

I like that Patricia refers to her work as “traditionally original”and went on to form her own company that is not a Guerlain Flanker. I’ve eyed this on Luckyscent before, but never ordered a sample since it is listed as masculine, but now Despina says women can wear this and I am interested. My favorite of this line is Cuir Cuba. I would love to win this bottle by the “girl boss of niche perfumes”. Thanks for setting me straight that this isn’t only for men. USA.

  • citizenkage says:

Wow, very interesting read. I didn’t know much about the history of this brand and that is what I loved most about this article. I found it very interesting that Patricia De Nicolai was the first female recipient of the Best Young Perfumer award. Also very cool that she was part of Guerlain, I did not know that. I haven’t tried this fragrance but I’ve heard nothing but great things about it. I’ve only tried a couple Parfums De Nicolai and out of those, Neroli Intense is my favorite. Thanks for the opportunity. I live in the US.

  • I like Parfums de Nicolai very much, my favourites are oud scents trio, Patchouli, and Cap Neroli. New York is gorgeous classic yet modern scent. I live in Poland.

  • Dubaiscents says:

New York was one of the first Nicolai scents I tried (thanks to the rave review by Luca Turin) and I remember thinking it was just too strange for me but, like so many complex scents, I have leaned to enjoy it more and more as my tastes change and develop. My favorite Nicolai scent is Le Temps d’Une Fete because it has such a lovely narcissus note! It was so lovely to hear why this one is called New York. I certainly can relate to having loved ones so far away. Thank you for the chance to own a bottle of this! I’m in The US.

  • fazalcheema says:

This review reminds us how many great perfumes do not see the daylight because they are not embraced by any brand as New York was initially an unsold formula created by Madame Nicolai. I did not think before but I can see how New York reminds one of perfumes like Habit Rouge. My fav. from the brand is New York that is also a tribute to my most favorite city in the world. I am in US.

  • I loved Despina’s review, especially the history of Mme Nicolai and her Guerlain roots! New York Intense sounds like a very elegant and sophisticated unisex scent. I love that this fragrance was a love letter to her sister who lived in New York. My favorites from this line are: Ambre Cashmere Intense and Fig Tea. Thanks for the generous giveaway and I live in the US!

  • jeremyn87 says:

Im interested since the fragrance sounds very old school. CItrusy, herbaceous, with backbone. Like Versace Lhomme or something. Plus the others its compared to.
I havent tried others from the house
Im in IL in the US. Thanks for the draw

  • I had the pleasure of having a sample of this fragrance and I completely agree with Despina’s review that Nicolai New York is a unique fragrance that receives a lot of flattering comments. Arek Poland

  • I’ve had the chance to sample some of the Nicolai creations and i remember two that i liked a lot, sacrebleu intense and cuir cuba intense. Nice article, thanks for the chance. I am in the EU.

  • I enjoyed reading about the name and how it came about. Long lasting fragrances are the best.
I don’t have a favorite Parfums de Nicolai fragrance.
    I live in USA.

  • tuiu silver says:

Despina got me right at “chypre + fougère + oriental and aromatic genre fused together”.
A masculine scent that is classy, timelessly elegant and self-assured but never cocky is a masterpiece to my eyes.
Despina also made some good comparison with other fragrance, but still made it clear that this one is unmistakably recognizable, which made it even more special.
My favorite from this house is Patchouli Intense, even tough I only got a sample of it, I just love the way it smells.
I would like to join this draw please, I’m from Brazil.

  • Laurentiu says:

Unfortunately, I do not know any scent from this well-known house, but New York Intense would be a good start. I always wondered where the name came from, but now that I found out I think it is a good choice.

    I am in EU. Thanks!

  • Honestly, the thing I enjoyed most about this review was the background on the company and the meaning behind the name. I’m excited to explore this house more in-depth in the future. I’m in the USA.

  • I like Patricia’s creation and New York and New York Intense one of my favourite from her perfumes. New York is deep, reach, mature soft chypre and I love it. I have only sample.

I have been lucky enough to try the original formula of Parfums de Nicolai New York. I remember wearing it while visiting NYC and feeling so energised, yet also warm and comforted. I didn’t know that the fragrance was named New York because Mme. Nicolaï had been missing her sister who was living in NYC. Now this fragrance is all the more special.
    I live in the USA.

What a fascinating review!!! It looks like Patricia de Nicolai New York Intense (on my want list from a long time) is an aggregation or sum of Guerlain Habit Rouge, Heritage, Derby, Chanel Pour Monsieur, Boucheron Pour Homme, Jaipur Homme, and Creed Bois du Portugal. Great affection to her sister, no matter how much far she lived. My favorite is Patricia de Nicolai Patchouli Intense.
Thanks for the generosity, count me in, please. Pakistan.

  • I somehow have never smelled any Parfums de Nicolai fragrances, but this one sounds right up my alley. I love classic masculines like Guerlain’s Habit Rouge and Héritage and Chanel’s Pour Monsieur. I’d love to win this; thanks for the draw! I live in the US.

  • DulciusExAsperis says:

Wow, i had no idea Patricia de Nicolai was a part of the Guerlain family… I would love to know more about that. Imagine growing up amongst all the fragrant opulence…
The only Nicolai I have tried is called Kiss Me Intense, and I only had a small sample, but I really enjoyed it. I’d love to try New York. I live in the USA.

  • I enjoyed the inspiration and passion of a place, a desire to immortalize the spirit ir energy of something and effort to make something classy and appealing . I love Fig Tea and find myself reaching for it more than I thought I would. I live in the USA and am registered. Thank you for this article.

  • That drydown sounds to die for! It has such a fresh, herbal opening with bergamot, lemon and thyme but those notes of Vanilla, Styrax, Incense, Musk, and Civet make it incredible. I would definitely have this be a fragrance that myself and my boyfriend would both wear.

    I live in the US.

Despina, great review of Parfums de Nicolai New York Intense. I enjoyed learning about the history of Parfums de Nicolai fragrances. I haven’t had a chance of trying any Parfums de Nicolai fragrances. Parfums de Nicolai New York Intense sounds like a perfect masculine fragrance with a combination of citrus, spices, woods, and other creative notes. I am from the USA.

  • I enjoyed the bio on Patricia de Nicolai and was wowed by the fatc that it only took Despina about a minute to answer what fragrance would you like for your birthday it would take me a few days! My favorites from this house are NY intense and Patchouli Intense. I am in the USA and thanks for the giveaway.

  • Excellent review by Despina as she describes the shapeshifting of this fragrances in good detail. New York intense sounds so good to me. I live in USA. Thank you for the draw and have a very beautiful day.

  • Happy Birthday Despina and Thanks for the thoroughly informative review and to Parfums de Nicolaï for the bottle of New York Intense. Mme de Nicolaï has had such an illustrious perfume path I’m so happy she created this house I Love Fig Tea, Musc Monoï, Maharanih Intense. I haven’t tried New York ever I did the worse thing and listened to a few who thought it ‘manly’ I should’ve known better. Despinas description of the oakmoss being present throughout and increasing, the flowery lavender spicy citrus and lemon cake like Amber gets me. I esp love comparison to older perfumes I love 80s (or earlier) perfumes my fave! USA

  • It is an astonishing thought to wish perfume like New York Intense for birthday. Especially when this is the wish of a perfume lover and someone who perceives how magnificent this perfume is. The story of New York is as old as Parfums de Nicolaï. Only the best perfumer can accomplish such a comprehensive transformation from pre-IFRA New York to equally, if not even better, grand New York Intense.
When a perfume is of 30 years, and its perfumer is an expert who saves it in our IFRA age, it becomes vital for the history of perfumery. Moreover, my love and admiration rise with the fact that the creator of New York / New York Intense is president of the Osmotheque.
New York, 1989 / New York Intense is my favorite creation of Mme de Nicolaï, but I love many others. One of them is beautiful chypre, Odalisque.
It is a pleasure to read whole Despina’s review that praises one of the most relevant perfumes of the last three decades.
I am in Croatia, EU. Thank you.

  • I love everything about her story! I love that she listened to fans and created the Intense version. I love that she made a name for herself (Guerlain should be kicking themselves for not letting her take the helm and instead churning out LPRN flanker after flanker). I’m in the US and I love her Patchouli Intense!

  • I’m interested in this fragrance because of its “earthy/herbal character”. I’m a fan of both incense and clove notes. Patchouli Intense is the only fragrance I have from this house. Thanks for the opportunity to try New York Intense! USA
