Parfums De Marly Safanad Review (Fabrice Pellegrin) 2013 + Another Hidden Gem Giveaway

Parfums de Marly Safanad review

Parfums De Marly Safanad via the brand

Venturing once again into the realm of underrated fragrances by Parfums De Marly allows me to cast a luminous spotlight upon the oft-overshadowed gem, Safanad, which I remember from my retail days, and when our Editor-in-Chief Michelyn Camen jogged my memory about how wonderful it smells, I knew I had to write about it.  During a recent exclusive event celebrating the newly launched Althaïr (reviewed by Steven)at the boutique, I enjoyed mingling amidst  devoted brand aficionados, ardent fragrance enthusiasts who have been Parfums de Marly fans for numerous years.  I was perplexed that not a single soul noticed Safanad—an omission I fervently intend on amending.

Parfums de Marly Safanad unfurls like a tapestry of warm, velvety hues akin to the golden sunlight cascading during the glorious fall season. As the zephyr ushers in a crisp nip and leaves transform into a splendid mosaic of gold, our yearning for snug comfort in anticipation of the looming winter crescendos. The overture of Safanad’s fragrant symphony commences with a symphony of candied pear notes, orchestrated to meld perfume-like allure with a dessert-like sweetness. This pear-forward fragrance is swiftly escorted by the faint bitterness of petitgrain essence, adroitly poised to temper the initial saccharine burst.

Yet, the perfume’s very heart is its beguiling narrative’s zenith. Here, the jasmine sambac absolute reigns supreme, its floral aria enveloped in an addictive ylang-ylang accord that exudes an essence akin to an overripe banana—a note that invariably ensnares my senses and is further enriched by a sumptuous orange blossom bouquet delicately steeped in a smoky nuance, evoking memories of tea adorned with a lavish tannin concentration.

Safanad unfurls at the base in a crescendo of olfactory delight, wherein amber, sultry vanilla, and creamy trails of sandalwood perform a mesmerizing ballet. For those enraptured by a subtly classic approach to perfumery, it evokes fond scent memories bringing to mind classics such as Serge Lutens Fleur d’Oranger (2003) or Jean Paul Gaultier Classique (1992), Parfums de Marly Safanad gracefully pays homage to the timeless white floral tradition, weaving an elegant embroidery of scents by Fabrice Pellegrin whose artistry breathes life into this stunning perfume. We adore it.

Notes: Pear, Orange, Orange Blossom, Ylang-Ylang, Iris; Vanilla, Amber, Sandalwood.

The bottle was kindly gifted to me but opinions are always my own. Michelyn has her original bottle.

My all time favorite fragrance from Parfums de Marly is Meliora! But I love Jasmine fragrances and the description from Olya really intrigued me!

  • oavezbakiev says:

Such a great review Olya! I totally agree with you, Safanad is so underrated. I love Safanad and it’s been on my wishlist for a while, I think it’s great for colder months.

Hello from Florida, and thank you to Olya for the review!

Safanad sounds like such a smooth, dreamy scent for the fall and winter. I love pear as a note, and it seems as though it’d be perfectly accented by iris, sandalwood, and the banana-toned ylang-ylang. I’d love to give it a try!

I loved Olya’s description of the fragrance as a mosaic of gold — the imagery is perfect for autumn! I would be excited to try Parfums de Marly Safanad — I love a timeless white floral and the pairing of the bouquet of flowers with the vanilla, amber, and sandalwood base sounds so smooth and creamy. It is hard to decide, but I think Cassili might be my favorite so far.

  • I bought a sample of safanad recently but is a sweet orange blossom on me. LOVE IT !
    I missed the pear.
Msybe I need to give it another try

  • Olya describes the experience of unfurling several times. Which for me feels like a gradual unwrapping of a present. In this case, a majestic parfum. Candied pear and orange blossom sound both inviting and invigorating. Looking forward experiencing Safanad!

  • The way Olya describes the notes interacting with each other made my mouth water and shot Safanad to the top of my wishlist! I’ve been absolutely loving white florals lately. My favorite PDM thus far is Layton, and I’m in WA, USA

  • Jasmine is one of my favorite florals, and the combo with a smoky orange blossom sounds amazing. I’d love the chance to try this one! I haven’t had the opportunity to try much from Parfums de Marly but I enjoyed Haltane very much. I’m in MN, USA.

  • Fabrice Pellegrin is such a great perfumer, Safanad is indeed underated. My opinion of the fragrance is is a way similar, yet in some ways quite different from what Olya is getting.

Bitterness , smoky nuances and jasmine I don’t get at all. To me Safanad dessert like sweetness comes more from the sweet orange blossom , and ripe banana, and not from the pear. Fluffy exquisite French orange blossom dessert experience in a sunny Fall day, is how Safanad smells to me , with some creamy sandalwood. If I have to make my own comparison like Olya did , I’d compare Safanad with less sweeter, more cozy rather than seductive cousin to Love Don’t be Shy by By Kilian.
If I have to rate my favorite Parfums de Marly fragrances :
    1. Habdan , one of my all time favorite fragrances
    2. Oajan
    3. Herod / Althaïr
    All profiles I already follow, including @yvanjacqueline , @waltherp99bg

The Jasmine sounds delightful here. I’d love to win this and live in Indiana.

  • I read the review and wondered how I have never tried Safanad. The candied pear notes are what drew me in, much like the pear compote I made last night! I’ve tried quite a few PDM and keep gravitating back to Delina Exclusif. ~Indiana

  • You had me from the first mention of pear with white florals, and then when you compared it to Serge Lutens Fleur d’Oranger I knew I had to try this one. I love a funky banana tone in my ylang ylang, and a bit of pear is gorgeous for autumn but can be a welcome note in all seasons. As buzzy as PdM has been, I can’t make a favorite because I haven’t sniffed one yet! It would be an absolute dream to start with Safanad. I’m in the USA, thank you for sharing this review and hosting the draw.

  • Much thanks for the lovely review, Olya.
I completely agree, Safanad does not get the attention it deserves. I have gotten my nose on this stunning fragrance a few times when exploring PDM’s line and every time it’s simply bliss. The beautiful pear slowly slipping into ylang ylang and finding its way to such a cozy dry down reminding me of a golden Fall walk on a crisp October morning. Something so euphoric about Safanad that brings me such a sweet lingering desire to wear it time and time again.

    Thank you, Olya!
This is one of parfums de marly’s best. Safanad has such a beautiful sweetness I find addicting, wearing this would bring me great confidence as the notes listed are ones that I adore.
My favorite from the line would be Valaya, she’s gorgeous and I could see myself layering the two together.

  • evenings seem relatively hard to come by. Safanad is the first I’ve heard of that achieves that effect with a bold pear note; the segue into sticky sweet jasmine and smoked tea sounds unexpected and rich. An amber, vanilla, and sandalwood base always works. I can see why Olya and Michelyn like Safanad so much—thanks for highlighting it.

I’m in the USA. I haven’t tried any Parfums de Marly fragrances and would love to.

  • This looks admiring to look at especially smelling what could the smell be through the screen

  • whimsical diva says:

Notes like ylang-ylang, banana orange blossom and ylang ylang remind me of summer, not fall, so the description in this review of how these come together to make a fall perfume is very fascinating.

My favorite PdM perfume is Delina by far. My favorite fruity floral of all time.

I’d love to enter the draw. I live in California, US

  • Safanad sounds like such a lovely feminine fragrance. The bouquet of white flowers supported by vanilla, amber and sandalwood notes is so classic. The opening pear note seems to add a juiciness to the composition. I haven’t tried many Parfums de Marly but I enjoyed my sample of Layton. I’m in the US.

  • I’m excited to see a PdM review about lesser known scents. This one sounds beautiful. I wish I could have tested it on my lastest trip to the store. In maryland

  • This review makes me want this perfume in a bad bad way!! My favorite scent from Parfums De Marly is probably Layton, such a beautiful scent!

  • This sounds like a lovely sweet floral. I really enjoy PdM scents but haven’t really explored a lot of the line because it’s hard to find at store counters. I love that it has a pear note. And the drydown sounds so soft and comforting – any time sandalwood is in the base of a fragrance, it just makes me feel like I’m being wrapped in a cozy blanket.
    I live in the USA.

  • I am happy that finally, you are talking about Safanad. Safanad is one of the best from the house that is not being talked about much. A masterfully blended amber-floral fragrance with a beautiful smell.
    Houston, TX.
    Thank you all!

  • Parfums De Marly is definitely underrated.

Tried their Athalia and immediately brought a full bottle the day after. I was absolutely obsessed with it for a good 3-4 months. I still wear it to most nighttime events and dinners.

I like Olya’s mention of Safanad’s resemblance to Fleurs d’Oranger from Serge Lutens, which is an old favorite of mine. Looking at the note breakdown, both scents prominently feature the lovely white floral of orange blossom, yet Safanad leans towards a sweeter, woodier profile.

    Very interested in trying Safanad.
    Much love from NY, US!

  • Farewellsmell says:

I really enjoyed Olya’s beautiful description of fragrance in this review with the comparison to a “golden sunlight cascading during the glorious fall season”. Safanad would be incredible in the winter based on how comforting it sounds. My current favorite PdM fragrance would have to be Greenley.

I would love to win a bottle of Parfums De Marly Safanad. I like to hear that it’s similar to “classics such as Serge Lutens Fleur d’Oranger (2003) or Jean Paul Gaultier Classique (1992)”. I like the combination of amber/sandalwood/white floral. Lately, I’ve been enjoying fragrances which include jasmine and/or ylang-ylang. I live in MD, U.S.A.

  • Oh gosh, I love a jasmine – and I don’t think I have any pear perfumes. Thanks for a great review!

The only PdM I’ve tried is Delina.

  • How did I miss this pear forward fragrance with a crescendo? Done by Fabrice who is one of my favorite perfumers. I guess it stands in the shadow of Delina Exclusif which is my favorite. I’d love to win this. thanks for the chance. USa.

  • “Parfums de Marly Safanad unfurls like a tapestry of warm, velvety hues akin to the golden sunlight cascading during the glorious fall season. As the zephyr ushers in a crisp nip and leaves transform into a splendid mosaic of gold, our yearning for snug comfort in anticipation of the looming winter crescendos.” This is lovely written, and really makes me excited for the prospect of possibly winning this. Hopefully I can! This would be my first Parfums de Marly.

I have an address in the USA.

  • Being a vain man compliments are so important to me. Safanad with its “symphony of candied pear” orange blossom , and spicy vanilla sweetness , tea and sandalwood for sure will get me unsolicited compliments , while smelling amazing.Elegant fragrance done right.
Oajan is my favorite Parfums de Marly, it’s full , balsamic sweet and long lasting.
    Overly exciting giveaway, USA

  • I really loved how olya really could paint a picture with the masterpiece. My favorite parfums de marly right now has to be delina la rosee, its so good. Safanad has been my second favorite and ive been wanting to get a bottle for a while now. This review was a masterpiece, thank you Olya. I live in the US.

  • I liked Olya’s imagery of the perfume unfurling like an olfactory tapestry 🙂 My favorite PDM is still Herod with Layton a close 2nd. Thank you for the review and the giveaway. I’m in TX USA.

  • IvanVelikov says:

When I think Parfums de Marly , the image of Pegasus bottle comes to mind . Thanks to Olya I now know Safanad is cozy and posh , in a way underappreciated fragrance.
I like the sweet pear, vanilla, the special floral accord Olya told us about, and the whole uplifting balance achieved by the perfumer.I’d pair Safanad with Peak Lapel , Latte Brown Double Breasted Suit.
Pegasus I cherish most out of all Parfums de Marly fragrances, fantastic fragrance with great performance.
Thank you Olya , Fine Fragrances

I loved Olya’s review of Parfums De Marly Safanad because I love learning about new fragrances I never tried before. Safanad sounds like the perfect floral fragrance with a warm, sweet, and seductive Vanilla and Ambery drydown that sounds truly divine. My favorite Parfums de Marly fragrance is Herod. I am from the USA.

  • Parfums de Marly Safanad is refined sweet fruity floral, centered around delicious pear , banana , orange blossom, vanilla and positive emotions. Judging by Olya’s review, it’s also a transitional weather fragrance ,versatile, and easy to wear , from day time family gatherings , to going out with friends , or weddings .Long lasting fragrances are always welcomed , and I think all Parfums de Marly fall in the same category , same thing I’m expecting from Safanad .
I also find the contrast between the transparent bottle , black ribbon and the golden cap .
Oajan is my favorite Parfums de Marly , but Delina Exclusif is breathing in Oajan neck all the time. Both are staples for me.
    Thanks for the draw

  • Olya do have a point when she told us how no one noticed Safanad on Althaïr launch event , I’ll be honest I was not even aware the fragrance existed. Her take on Safanad made me think of making Orange Blossom Vanilla Cake , with Candied Pear and Banana on top , and later on eating it with a cup of Earl Grey tea.
It’s a 50/50 toss up for me between Herod and Oajan, for my favorite Parfums de Marly fragrance.
Appreciate the review, and the giveaway campaign

Thanks for the nice review Olya.

I enjoyed reading about this PdM that I haven’t heard of before. It’s rare to hear about fragrances with a pear note in it.

I’m quite appreciative of the movement of this fragrance into white florals, jasmine sambac and orange flower – almost dessert like and then the amber base.

    A classic PDM fragrance.

My favorite from this house is Nisean.

    Cheers from WI, USA

  • Speaking of Althaïr gala at Parfums de Marly boutique, I’m sampling the fragrance at the moment smelling my left hand non stop. On first thought the aroma is 10/10 , and also significantly sweeter compared to the way Michelyn and Steven reviewed it.
Just like Olya review Safanad is so tranquil , Pumpkin Spice , leaves falling to the ground , tea in front of a fireplace, such thoughts crossed my mind. I’ll revisit the fragrance, haven’t smelled it in a while.
Love both of my Delina bottles , the regular one and the Exclusif , also bought Byerley twice for my dad, he absolutely loves it.
My favorite Parfums de Marly fragrance is Delina Exclusive . Cafleurebon i follow on both Facebook and Instagram
