Im wunderschönen Monat Mai,

Als alle Knospen sprangen,

Da ist in meinem Herzen

Die Liebe aufgegangen.

Im wunderschönen Monat Mai,

Als alle Vögel sangen,

Da hab ich ihr gestanden

Mein Sehnen und Verlangen.

In the incredibly lovely month of May

When all the buds were bursting open

Love arose in my heart.

In the incredibly lovely month of May

When all the birds were singing

I confessed to her

My craving and desire. ~ Heinrich Heine (my translation)

I have purchased several of their fragrances over the years; today I’m reviewing 2009’s Ormonde Jayne Tiare, a crisp chypre of incomparable elegance. Chypres were my first love, and I’d still likely choose a chypre over most any other genre if push came to shove. Tiare shares the lineage of verdant aldehydic floral chypres with other noteworthy fragrances in noble tradition; it manages to feel contemporary while possessing a very classical bone structure. I love that there is a sense of movement in it; what commences as a scintillating floral kissed with citrus and limpid floral tones wends its path to a more sylvan retreat, duskily appealing and mysterious.

Ormonde Jayne Tiare smells of Eternal May to me. The pining poet of Robert Schumann’s song cycle Dichterliebe (A Poet’s Love), penned by the great Heinrich Heine – speaks eloquently of Spring’s beauty and his heart filled with desire and longing – which he confesses to the beloved. Tiare opens with a burst of unbridled enthusiasm: aldehydes lift and float mandarin and lime on the breeze as orange blossom, Tahitian gardenia (that’s what tiare is!) and the coolly floral, crystalline quality of freesia and water lily accompany them. Other blossoms dovetail seamlessly – jasmine and ylang ylang for sultriness, the silvery orris as counterpoint. Blooms carried upon a zephyr soon congregate in the woods, commingling with cedar and sandalwood, vetiver, patchouli and moss of the forest floor – and it is here where the lovers recline in secret, sequestered from prying eyes. One’s initial impression is that of innocence, but the depth of feeling inferred by the voluptuous richness in Tiare’s base notes murmurs otherwise; a suave musk of intention contributes its own discreet nuance. The perfume’s refined nature assures that all this youthful ardor is expressed sotto voce; it is undeniable in spite of the masterful finesse with which emotions are rendered.

A kinship exists between Chanel Cristalle eau de parfum (Jacques Polge, 1993), Estée Lauder Private Collection Jasmine White Moss (also released in 2009) and Tiare – and you will likely see comparisons noted. Speaking from the viewpoint of one who owns, wears and enjoys all three fragrances, I can attest to both similarities and differences. Tiare holds the crown for being the most floral and evolved: it isn’t linear, nor does it culminate in a variant of powder. Fond as I am of the others, Ormonde Jayne Tiare claims pride of place for its complexity, degree of sophistication and ability to unfold itself like so many petals – revealing an enigmatic profundity.

Notes: aldehydes (not listed, but sensed), mandarin, Sicilian lime, orange flower, tiare, freesia, water lily, jasmine, orris, ylang ylang, cedar vetiver, sandalwood, patchouli, moss, musk

  • Ida! What a beautiful review! ❤️ I adore the way Ida follows the perfume’s “sense of movement” and compares it to a sylvan journey of love. How wonderful! The forest contains so many volumes, scatterings of light, degrees of solidity, solubility, scents. The whole shimmering complexity of it is as scintillating as love. Chypres are some of my favorites fragrances and I would be so lucky to experience Tiare! The work of Linda Pilkington & Geza Schoenbis great! My favorite is Ormonde Woman, but I’ve yet to experience many of their fragrances, Tiare included. Thank you for this amazing opportunity! USA ❤️

  • Beautiful review. I have wanted to try Ormonde jayne tiare for a king but thought it would be a flowery perfume. I love chypres so this would be perfect
My favorite Ormonde Jayne is Woman

Amazing review Ida! It seemed like i was reading a story, so captivating how she described the notes .
Aldehydes , though not mentioned explicitly is one of my favorite note.
I havent tried their fragrances yet but would love to. Cheers from USA

I love how it is jot powdery on the drydown and being an absolute floral lover i love it. Over to that it’s a sophisticated perfume unlike many which I find juvenile. Good one Ida.
I havent tried any fragrance from this house yet.

  • Thank you for your beautiful review of Tiare, Ida. All of those wonderful floral notes, mixed with earthy moss, patchouli and cedar sound fantastic. I enjoy Ormonde Jayne Champaca. Thanks for another fabulous draw! Mich USA

I have always wanted to try this perfume, but haven’t gotten around to it yet. I love the painting, it speaks to me exactly as I imagine the perfume smells. I haven’t tried any Ormonde Jayne perfumes yet. Your translation seems spot on to me. I can see her frolicking in the wild amongst the flowers and greenery.

  • Lovely review by Ida. I sampled a Fragrance by Ormonde and it smelled wonderful. The notes in Tiare sound beautiful the citrus , floral, musk such a nice combo. Ida compared it to Chanel & Estee lauder that’s interesting. Thank you for this Chance. USA

    Fantastic review @idameister
I must say that I do like a good chypre and without question if it has some elements of aldehydes, my favorite is OJ man,
    Thanks

  • Great review. I loved the Robert Schumann tie-in. One of my favorite composers and this references conjures up an idea of what this scent might smell like in a way that truly piques my curiosity.

I have only tried one, Ormonde Man, but for some reason I was nearly unable to smell it despite a generous application. I don’t think I was going noseblind; I think there must be a few notes that I was just genetically not equipped to smell! I want to try it again soon and see if anything has changed. I suppose it is still technically my favorite Ormonde Jayne by default. Ha!

A flowery review for a flowery scent! Beautifully written, as always. I’ve not owned any of this fragrance line before, but would love to!

  • I am so glad you bring up the comparison with Chanel Cristalle! I agree it is more floral and enjoy both the complexity and the longevity it has. I feel like this jewel isnt a discussed as much as some other Ormonde Jaynes so am glad to see it being reviewed. I have a dregs left in a partial bottle from a swap and always keep intending to restock but others get in the way. There really is something special about it. I would love to have a FB! Thank you Linda for your generosity!

  • I have not had the pleasure of trying one of their scents just yet, but what better place to start than with this beautifully described scent. Tiare flower is one I am not intimately familiar but I would love to spend more time with it. In maryland.

  • Teresaluvsfrags says:

Ida’s comment that this is a contemporary but Classic fragrance, sounds like this a timeless scent to me and I would love to add this lovely to my little collection. I have yet to try Ormonde Jayne, but I love chypres so I feel confident it will be a hit for me.
Thank you so much for this!

I love that the fragrance is not linear. The image of the fragrance unfolding like petals is wonderful. I haven’t tried any Ormonde Jayne fragrances before.

  • As someone who enjoys Cristalle by Chanel, the fact that Tiara has similarities to it intrigues me. My fav. from Ormonde Jayne is Nawab of Oudh. I am in US.

  • I haven’t been able to try any from Ormonde Jayne yet but this sounds like a great start, the notes of cedar, vetiver, moss, musk along with the florals sounds amazing. I love how Ida describes fragrances with such beautiful imagery and poems. Thanks for the chance! NY, USA

  • With all the nerves, stress and issues I had for the past 3 months , l….downs , business restrictions , negative emotions are slowly gaining control over me . O
With Tiare tranquility and genuine positive energy will come after all . Green, floral and woody “unbridled enthusiasm” is what I need at the moment.
I may not have several Ormonde Jayne fragrances like Ida , but I have Tolu , my favorite , such a luxurious scent. Everyone should if not own it , at least smell it.
    Thanks to Ida , Europerfumes

  • Ida has whisked me away to the woods in my mind, allowing me to picture and enjoy the scents of a beautiful Spring day. I thoroughly enjoy the brief escape you’ve provided in this piece. Thank you 🙂
My favorite Ormonde Jane fragrance would have to be Isfarkand. USA

  • As Ida says in her review of Ormonde Jayne Tiare, this does sound like Eternal May indeed, with classical chypre notes with a modern flavor. The romantic love in spring air and confession of love to one’s beloved were well captured by Ida’s review in the opening poem and subsequent writing and pictures. Unfortunately, I haven’t tried anything by Ormonde Jayne, yet, but given their uncompromising dedication to quality, I’d love to try it some day. For now, trying my luck at this generous draw by Europerfumes. From USA.

That Poem! What an entrance!I had lots of admiration for the focus that Linda began with and still has, the vision that she has not strayed from is surely one of the keys to her success. I think we can all take a page from that book not only in business but in many other aspects of life in order to realise our dreams. The Tiare sounds exquisite and coming from the Pacific I can feel it embrace me along with those other florals like a familiar friend. Thank you for this wonderful read and discovery. I’m in Aotearoa by the way:).

  • I love Ormond Jayne perfumes. My first experience was after a red eye to London, I dragged my lovely hubby to Harrods specifically to sample OJ. We loved several but left with Woman, which was so interesting and unique. Since then I have purchased Tolu twice and numerous samples. Ida’s review reminds me exactly why I loved Tiare, but somehow have never purchased. I would love to have it. I do live in the United States,

  • Thank you, Ida, for the lyrical review. The non-linear complexity is what draws me to this one. And I agree, I enjoy chypres. In NC USA

  • Reading reviews on Cafleurebon is truly addictive , and also dangerous if you’re not careful.
Blind bought Ormonde Jayne Royal Elixir, because Dana Sandu Cafleurebon contribution. Honestly I absolutely love it, but the smell to me is so very different , than the way it was described.
I remember …. Mongolian people laying on ice , and some connection with traditional songs. The smell to me has nothing to do with all above, it’s not cold, but so alive , warm with strong Caribbean or Brazilian vibe , with happy people dancing salsa.
I’m not blaming Dana Sandu of course, but myself only.
Ever since blind buying Royal Elixir, I now always sample first !!!! I no longer play such Russian roulette games.
Tiare I’ll try , I wonder what I’ll get from it, green and zingy fragrance, the citrusses paired together with florals . This is a Chypre, yes..a very green one , I’m a fan of Chypre/Green perfumes , so I presume I’ll enjoy it.
I have a feeling it will remind me of sunny , happy , and a bit warm spring , and early summer days . Ida feels the same way.
    Nice giveaway,USA
    Regards

  • Words like “elegant” and “refined” are definitely appropriate when describing Ormond Jayne. My nose is not yet attuned to florals and I can’t formulate a clear olfactory picture of Tiare, but it sounds nice. Most recently I’ve sampled Osmanthus, Ta’if, Tolu, and Zizan. They’re all wonderful.

Eager to try this one – eager to try them all!

  • The review does a beautiful job of taking you through the life of the perfume- from the citrus to the floral and ending with the woods and moss. Cristalle is my favorite perfume so I am naturally very interested in a modern green chypre. I do not have any Ormonde Jayne releases but I would like to, Texas, US

  • Like Ida, I also enjoy Chanel Cristalle edp and EL Private Collection Jasmine White Moss. I’ve never tried OJ Tiare but a cousin of those two fragrances would be a lovely spring addition. Chypres were my first introduction to “real” perfume and I still have a fondness for them. My first purchase was Mitsouko and I’m always looking to add to my collection. Favorite OJ fragrance is Woman. I’m in MD, USA.

  • helen.eckinger.shopping@gmail.com says:

I enjoyed Ida’s discussion of Chypres in her review. The only Ormonde Jayne fragrance I have tried is Frangiapani, which I enjoyed very much.

  • DulciusExAsperis says:

I like Ida’s reference to a chypre that has classical bones, but still feels modern and fresh. My grandmother loved Cristalle and fragrances that are reminiscent of it always remind me of her. I haven’t tried an Ormonde Jayne. I’m in the USA.

  • KitenKannelle says:

Thanks for such an inspiring review! That first line was rolling around in my head and I had to pull up the incomparable Fritz Wunderlich. Hopeful, but so haunting….
I appreciate the frame of reference with the other perfumes. I love Cristalle EDP, so juicy and so gritty. I wonder how Tiare compares to Odalisque, another gorgeous spring chypre on a bed of orris.
From Ormonde Jayne, I have only tried Woman, that hugely radiant green. So radiant, my nose was not prepared. I will need to sample again at some point!
Tiare also sounds particularly attractive for its aldehydes and tiare (on the endless quest for real gardenia).
    Thanks for the drawing!

  • Not my first love but i do love chypre… awesome review of Ormonde Jayne Tiare Ida!! Finest & rarest materials, smells of eternal may… love it!! I’ve sampled QI & Black Gold… USA

  • Ormonde Jayne Tiare sounds like a modern chypre with a glance back at the classics. I love that Ida explained that this fragrance isn’t linear. I absolutely love to smell the evolution of a perfume. I have only sampled one Ormonde Jayne fragrance, Osmanthus, and it was lovely.
Thank you for the giveaway. In the USA.

  • After reading Ida take on Tiare , I imagined eating Key Lime Cake , while sitting in the middle of a field full of flowers. Serine review, and fragrance.
To me Ormonde Jayne almost equals Ta’if Elixir. Smells very, and I mean very similar to a traditional Persian Pavlova Cake, but most people know it as Persian Love Cake. My bottle is half empty already.
Appreciate the review, and the giveaway campaign.

  • Linda Pilkington I’m a fan of for a long-long time.
Tiare I’ve not smelled yet, so I can’t share my thoughts , like I usually do.
Judging by Ida review i do believe Tiare is classic elegant chypre , with woody backbone.
Proud of owning Frangipani Made to Measure in 50% concentration in a beautiful engraved custom bottle , and i feel like i own bespoke perfume.Pure parfum versions were called Made to Measure , but to my knowledge , the special crystal ribbon bottles are no more.
    All profiles I already follow
    Thanks a lot

Thank you for the great review Ida.

I haven’t had a chance to smell an Ormond Jayne fragrance but I am a huge fan of the way this house presents their work. Absolutely elegant.

I love how Ida’s review compares the movement of this beautiful green chypre to the opening of the petals of a flower.

I imagine a wood nymph or fairy like Thumbelina to be wearing this one, while sitting nestled in a flower in a deep forest, with the creeks flowing and sun warming the air.

    Cheers from WI, USA

  • Somehow Ida Meister brought me to my childhood days , I used to love running in our neighbors huge colorful garden .
From Tiare I’m expecting refined, mossy and green floral , with decent dose of woods in the base.
From the 6-7 Ormonde Jayne I have smelled , Tolu is the best one. The bigger 120ml bottle is back in my collection
Cafleurebon, Ida , Europerfumes , thank you.

  • I was not expecting Tiate to be a chypre, but there you go! It makes sense after reading the review, as the greenness and earthiness compliments the floral tiare.
I haven’t tried anything from Ormond Jayne before. I live in the USA. Thanks for the giveaway.

  • sephrenia300 says:

Great review Ida! What I enjoyed most about it was how you described Tiare as having “a sense of movement”. I love fragrances that feel lively and vibrant, and that morphe and change several times on your skin through the wearing of it. Never boring, never heavy. The way that Tiare opens with lifting and bubbling aldehydes, then moves into flowing cool, liquidy florals, and then finally mingle with woods and mossy forest floor, really embody that movement in my mind and are thus incredibly appealing to me.

I have only tried two Ormonde Jayne fragrances before but my favorite of those two is Nawab of Oudh. A lovely spiced rose oud, but with an unusual dark greenery blended into the opening. Very lovely and sophisticated, but with an air of darkness. I live in the US.
