On The Radar: Friedemodin Jardin Mystique, Vertine, Rosée de Nuit and Feu Follet Perfumes

 With so many niche perfumeries debuting over the past several years, it is easy to miss a few. One that sounds worth exploring is  Friedemodin, a  London perfume house founded by Nina Friede and Elisabeth Modin, a German/Swedish duo united by their fascination and love of fragrance.

Together they  debuted their first perfume collection in the Fall of 2012, Jardin Mystique, evoking  the scents found in a wild enchanted garden – from the beautiful smell of a dewy morning, to the heat of the midday sun, the cooling down of dusk and the silent air of a sleepless night in the mystique garden.

The nose for Friedemodin, Francois Robert, is the son of Guy Robert, one of the greatest perfumers of all time (who passed away last year). Francois is a prestigious perfumer in his own right and is the nose behind Les Parfums de Rosine, Plum by Mary Greenwell, Lanvin Vetyver (2003). and a professor at ISIPCA. The UK’s only independent fragrance specialist (and ex evaluator at Givaudan), Virginie Daniau, assisted Francois, along with Nina and Elisabeth to bring their concept of bespoke combination perfumery to life. It took Francois over two years to succeed in mastering Friedemodin’s  concept of combination perfumery in the truest sense of the word. This, in essence, is creating beautiful stand alone fragrances that can also be perfectly combined to make your own bespoke combination.

JARDIN MYSTIQUE – THE COLLECTION

JARDIN MYSTIQUE Eau de Parfum
An elegant green floral that evokes a combination of all the wonderful scents found in an enchanted wild garden. This fragrance is a beautiful combination of delicate herbs and flowers, tamed with traditional perfumery notes. Jardin Mystique marks the beginning of a journey that combines a passion and love of perfumery.
Top Notes: Cassis buds, Bergamot Cut grass
Heart Notes: Jasmine absolute,  Lily of the Valley,Crushed leaves
Base Notes: Patchouli,Precious Woods

VERTINE Eau de Parfum
Vertine is a fresh green fragrance with notes of wild aromatic herbs – the enchanted garden covered in morning dew. This scent is a powerful harmony of the raw scents in the garden, with a smooth balanced finish.
Top Notes: Peppermint and Basil
Heart Notes: Galbanum, Fig Leaf, Tea Rose
Base Notes: Cedarwood, Musk

ROSÉE DE NUIT Eau de Parfum
Rosée de Nuit encapsulates the mysterious, sensual feeling of the evening as dusk falls in the garden, seductive, woody and spicy scents of linger in the air.
Top Notes: Cardamom, Bergamot
Heart Notes: Pimento Berries, Violet Wood Shavings
Base Notes: Patchouli, Teak, Sandalwood

Feu Follet

FEU FOLLET/ Eau de Parfum
Sleepless night. Dancing flames in moonless darkness. The silent air, filled with smoky and leathery notes.
Top Notes:Pink Pepper, Coriander, Cardamom
Heart Notes:Nutmeg, Lavender, Saffron
Base Notes:Leather, Amber, Patchouli Moss

 Available in 30 ml and 100 ml as well as a set of all three scents that are meant to be worn individually or combined to create a bespoke scent. Currently Friedmodin is sold in Europe, on the Friedemodin site and at Fragrance & Art. which ships internationally for a very reasonable rate.

I am not a fan of perfume combining as I believe that each scent should stand on its own. Or perhaps I am just lazy. Do you layer fragrances?

    What a wonderful idea for a recurring feature…I hate feeling like I am missing anything.  I don't layer fragrances much because I feel complex perfumes are a work of art and don't want to mess with them, and the fragrances that are meant to be layered are often too simple for my taste.  The notes listed here are complex enough though that they definitely sound worth trying.

    I sometimes do layer.. Depends on my emotions at the time and which fragrance I may have applied earlier. I have found some absolutely wonderful combo's by being a woman and changing my mind after I have spritzed.. Thanks for the article,

    smell the way I thought it might…so no more.

    I rarely layer scents, but sometimes it really works. I only layer if a perfume feels too sweet, fresh, woody, etc. In that case I will layer with a counterpart. My SO layers almost everything.

    I don’t believe in layering scents because like Nancy I feel that a great fragrance should stand on its own
    Jo Malone has this segment covered here and in the UK
    and I always found it to be a marketing ploy
    Francois Robert is an excellent perfumer and I bet these are very good.
    Another plus the ladies are from a very beautiful part if the world and I would imagine that aesthetic would be part of the fragrance collection which is thankfully small enough to explore
    I like that they are available at 30ml size and that this small boutique Fragrance& art ships worldwide
    What great brands they carry
    And samples! After reading yesterday’s post on Historiae mystic Oud I am very tempted to try a few lines I hadn’t heard if like amover
    More boutiques should be this selective and carry fewer brands and better fragrances

    I am attracted to the idea but never do it frankly. I just reach for the combo I want and always find it in one bottle or pot. Enjoyed the read as I sip my morning coffee here and contemplate what exactly I will wear today!

    The only scents that layer are TF private blends because they work very well for me when I do that. Beside that, layering any other scents only made it worse and not better or unique.  Thanks for the article Michelyn!

    I never layer scents. Used to own a set of  Truth Essences by Calvin Klein which were made for layering and I never even layered those, just wore them separately. I agree with Francesca, I can find the combo I want on one bottle.

    I agree that scents should stand on their own and I believe that, like colors, scents can also be combined and mixed to create something new. I like to experiment and have found some great mixes!

    i have never layered but the idea has definitely occured to me several times when i like different aspects in different fragrances but i think the desired effect is usually difficult to achieve due to laws of chemistry…one of my favorite masculine fragrances  is Lang's Cuiron and I have never smell any fragrance even close to it and wonder if i can achieve similar result by combing two or more fragrances..Cuiron has such a simple theme, like traditional colognes, and layering usually gives you complex and weird results

    I don't layer very often, but I will often wear one scent on each arm so I can compare the two. I do love to layer Spdaro's fragrances though. And sometimes if I put something on that is too light I might feel the need to raise it up with something else. I do prefer to let a perfume take me on a journey. It's a beautiful ride!
