New Perfume: Review Pharrell Williams Girl + Comme des Garcons “For Girls and Boys” Draw

Pharrell Williams with Girl Perfume (for Girls and Boys)

Seven Time Grammy Winner and the new coach on The Voice, Pharrell Williams is one of us, and that makes me happy.  Instead of going to a large commercial fragrance house, he teamed up with Comme des Garcons to create Girl,  his very first fragrance and  blurred lines between celebrity fragrance and niche scents. However you label it, Girl is a delight.

The collaboration with Comme des Garcons doesn’t surprise those of us who inhale fashion, coming from the man Esquire picked as Best Dressed in 2005 for “injecting dressed-up luxury into hip-hop style.”  Pharrell made headwear history when he wore a vintage Vivienne Westwood (1983) Buffalo hat to the 2014 Grammys.   With Girl, Pharell Williams fuses his own brand of pop culture with Commes de Garcons avant-garde fragrance line without in any way dumbing it down.

Named Girl, after the album that was inspired by all the women who helped him succeed, Pharrell William's new perfume is nevertheless unisex; the tag line on the  bottle is “for Girls and Boys". Girl's notes aren't called top, heart and base notes, but rather are a  playful nod to a live Pharell musical performance:

Intro: Neroli, lavender and white pepper

Middle Riff: Iris, styrax, violet

At the End: Patchouli, vetiver, sandalwood, cedar

Girl was produced by master perfumer Antoine Lie of Takasago, (the nose behind CdG Wonderwood, Armani Code, Etat Libre D'Orange Rien, nu-be Sulphur and Mercury, Puredistance Black (to name just a few) and Christian Astugueville, Creative Director of Comme des Garcons Parfums (who is also a renowned furniture artisan).  Girl follows in the tradition of Comme des Garcons' beloved wood-centric fragrances and while the list of notes indicates that Girl is something other than the typical celebrity fruity floral, the sum is much greater than its parts, which is saying something considering how many big names are attached to the scent.

Girl is definitely a woody fragrance, but the wood here is a unique fantasy tree. Imagine a green stalk armed with thorns to protect itself (the pepper, which remains noticeable to me beyond the top notes). Should you manage to bypass the thorns and snap it, you are rewarded with a cool milky sap (styrax) that contains tiny glittering jewels (the iris and violet). The experience is at once familiar and alien, but absolutely imaginative.

Also highly imaginative is Girl’s bottle, designed by celebrated Brooklyn artist KAWS (born Brian Donnelly), who has worked with Comme de Garcons before and has done other crossover artistic/commercial projects with Nike, Vans, and Dos Equis. Girl’s flacon resembles one of KAWS’ “Companion” sculptures and is a great chance to own a piece of up-to-the minute art.

Pharrell Williams Girl is $135.00 for 100 ml, which is a great price for such a high quality scent. I would spend that on the bottle alone! Girl is  currently available at Dover Street Market New York, Tokyo and London as well as Comme des Garcons stores worldwide.  You can order Pharrell Williams Girl Perfume on Sephora.com if you are a VIB, in either the 100 ml or a .03 rollerball ($30). Check it out here

Disclosure: I received my sample from Comme des Garcons New York

  • I’ve been waiting for this to be released in the US for several months now — happy (pun unintended) that it’s finally here! I’m excited as this fragrance collaboration offers a multisensory experience: appreciating the scent itself, then the bottle’s graphics, possibly while listening to a Pharrell song 🙂 . My favorite Pharrell song is actually one of the lesser known ones: “Just A Cloud Away”. I live in the US.

  • I’m excited to try any celebrity perfume that excites you guys. Collaborating with CdG and an artist for Girl were both smart decisions, so I’m incredible curious to smell it. My favorite song is Marilyn Monroe, but I confess that Happy gets stuck in my head most often. I’m in the US.

  • I am a big fan of woody perfumes from CdG 🙂 I don’t have a favorite Pharrell song, but this makes him sound pretty interesting! I am in the US.

  • This is my most anticipated release of the year. I love Pharrell and have for years. I am happy to see him grow in popularity. CDG is also one of my favorite perfume houses. So I am just dying to try this one. USA.

  • I want to try anything that Commes des Garcons produces, the good bad and ugly. I only have a passing acquaintance with Pharrell’s music but what I hear, I like. To read a review of a perfume that you guys are so excited about makes Girl irresistible, thanks!

  • Not a fan of Pharrell’s music but kudos to him for collaborating with CdG. Excited to try Girl because I try all CdG fragrances.
    I am in the US.

  • I generally avoid celebrity scents, but you have me intrigued with this one. I’m also curious on how they put together this combination of notes and to what effect. US

  • Fazal Cheema says:

One just need to know the collaboration is with Comme des Garcons to be excited about the fragrance . it seems this is going to be quite a contrasting fragrance, given the notes such as iris, neroli, and styrax. my favorite Paherrell Williams song is Happy. thanks for the draw. i am in the US

  • I’ve enjoyed Pharrell Williams’ music since the first N.E.R.D. album, but I have to admit that my favorite song of his is Happy, which I bought just hours after seeing Despicable Me 2 with my nephew. It’s exciting to see a celebrity perfume that seems to be as much about the perfume as the celebrity, and I’m glad that Sephora is carrying it, and also a rollerball. I’m in the US.

  • Donna Spiegel says:

I have loved Pharrel since he was mixing beats way back in the day. He’s very creative and although celebrity frags are usually a big disappointment this sound intriguing. Since he’s so brilliant at mixing notes in music that must carry over to perfume too and I would be delighted to try this. I love things that glitter so that description of being rewarded with tiny glittering jewels is a real tease. I’m in the US and thanks for the draw

  • I don’t usually pay much attention to celebrity scents, but this one sounds very interesting! I would like to own a woody scent. The enthusiasm for this makes it all the more appealing to try! I live in the US. Thanks for the review and draw!

  • I would be excited to win this draw as I haven’t tried any Comme des Garcons scents as of yet. No, sorry I don’t have a favorite Pharrell Williams song. USA ty

  • Woody scents always appeal to me. What a wonderful fantasy tree – lingering pepper, milky sap, followed by iris and styrax.

I’m not familiar with Pharrel’s music but in checking out some of his songs I find that his lyrics are very positive. Between that and his approach to this fragrance – he sounds like a unique and special person.

I’m in the U.S. Thank you for the draw and the introduction to an interesting individual.

  • Sephora VIB here so I am waiting for the email notification that Pharrell Girl is in and Girl will be mine
I don’t know comme de garçons pefumes at all but I have following Pharrell from back in the day of The Neptunes and N.E.R.D
He didn’t sing it but he produced Gwen Stefani Hollaback Girl
I am so psyched about pharrell and Gwen on the voice
    Fab bottle!

  • Sweet Nomad Tea is a CdG I really like. The only Pharrell Williams song I am familiar with is Happy. This new fragrance has an interesting lineup of notes, so for that reason I’d love to try some. US

  • I must admit I am intrigued by this scent due to the combination of the styrax, Iris and Violet! Glad to se a celebrity fragrance breaking the fruity floral mold 😉 Kudos for the partnership with CdG. One of my favorite CdG perfumes is Kyoto! I am in the US and Thanks for the opportunity to try this one.

  • I’m picturing something out of Oz — and it sounds like fun! I always feel at a disadvantage when fragrance houses are being discussed, because I’ve got little in the way of experience with them. I do, however, understand fantasy very well, and it seems that the artist pairing was a good one! What might otherwise have had a dark “Into the Woods” feel seems to approach something out of Oz instead!

  • Based on this review, this is imaginative, different, yet accessible…how could I not be excited about trying it? I love “Happy”–and really, it’s tough not to–though I’m more familiar with CdG scents, where my favorite is Nomad Tea. I am in the US; thank you for the draw!

  • A celebrity scent from CDG can’t be bad, even if it turns out to not be my taste. But I love woods, and the mention of lavender in the opening has me intrigued. The only song I know by him is HAppy. Isn’t he going to be on the Voice? If so, I look forward to getting to know him. That’s what made me love USher. I am in the US.

  • I love his song Happy, the beat is uplifting and onc3 you hear it, the song just sticks with you for the day. You find yourself humming all day. His style is unique and does not copy anyone else, I imagine the perfume would be the same. I would love to try it. I live in Michigan, USA.

  • Woody sounds great to me, the bottle is rather quirky. Happy is a great song and really becomes an earworm once you hear it. Looking forward to testing this at some point.

  • I’m excited to try Girl because the notes list sparks my interest. I like woodsy scents, and the idea of a unique fantasy tree is intriguing. I liked many of his songs when he was with N.E.R.D., but Happy is the only current song I know. I’m in the U.S.

  • Cynthia Richardson says:

I am excited to try Girl because according to the ingredients this fragrance promises to be chic and classy. I love the bottle. I just hope that longevity and sillage are going to be great. He’s a singer, songwriter, rapper, producer, fashion designer and much more? My favorite Pharrell Williams song is Happy.
