New Perfume Review: JoAnne Bassett Leather Collection + Worldwide Punk Draw

JoAnne Bassett

Natural perfumer JoAnne Bassett has garnered many titles in her career, “Queen of Roses, “Master of French Perfumery”, but with her latest offering, The Leather Collection, she may also well be the “Purveyor of Punk”. The assemblage of leather scents inspired by countries of origin, each presents a different face of a genre known for creative chaos, unabashed individuality and the spirit of what makes one a rebel.

Pussy Riot Moscow

Russian Leather is an olfactory call to arms, and presents an accord which does not shy away from what leather IS: meat. Opening with a birch tar which, for myself, is the repulsion/attraction of a scent so similar to something petrochemical. This burning tar gives way to a singed tobacco and the burnt leaves of clary sage still sparking with cardamom. By far the most challenging and obsessive of the collection, it speaks to the power of punk and it's in-your-face sociology. Consider Pussy Riot, a Russian female punk band, whose demands for equality rocked the world and landed them in an unfair and prejudiced jail. JoAnne captures the raw voice of these women which cannot and will not be silenced.

Notes: birch tar, Bulgarian tobacco, cardamom, clary sage, St. John's wort

taqwacore

Tawacore

Arabian Leather is the oud and palo santo powered call to prayer, and if you think prayer isn't punk- then you don't know about Taqwacore- the Muslim world's musical scene which fuses both traditional values with the churning world of the West. We are given both holy cedars and frankincense and dual floral/spice spike of cassie.  JoAnne speaks to the divine moment between prayer rug and amped guitar; the sacred balancing act these musicians walk everyday.

Notes: Cambodian oud, frankincense carteri, frankincense freana, cedarwood, palo santo, cassie absolute

christiandeath

Christian's Death

Italian Leather is the classic brown bomber jacket of the 80's, starting with a cistus as sticky sweet as the goth scene was alive and thriving with bands such as Italy's Christian Death. Vintage jasmine and wild orange brighten the tobacco and light patchouli and is easily a go-to aroma full of nostalgia and warmth. JoAnne touches upon a memory, where the underground scene for a moment surfaced and gave notice to the outside world.

Notes: cistus, wild orange, vintage jasmine grandiflolium, Bulgarian tobacco, light patchouli

pedroalmodovarbullfighter

Pedro Almodovar

Spanish Leather is a leather tinged by fur or wool lining with a crystalline salvia lavendula (Spanish sage, with a strong lavender leaning as the name suggests) and this sage/lavender/near menthol is a hyper clean straight-edge punk. It speaks of the perfection as pathology, a beautiful if not cold anthem in the films of Pedro Almodovar. Grounded with ambrette seed and sandalwood, there is a softening- a resolve which happens even in the most outrageous of Almodovar's work.  JoAnne could be scenting the scene or certainly a character from the list of gorgeous actors who populate the Spanish director's films.

Notes: Spanish sage, cistus, dark patchouli, ambrette seed, sandalwood

sergegainsbourgb&w

French Leather is familiar herbaceous leather, full of French countryside and the polite and proper guaicwood and copaiba balsam give distinction to the classic lavender and benzoin. Being punk doesn't mean you have eschew everything in anger but instead you simply say it as it is. Serge Gainsbourg may be an unlikely punk choice, but with songs like “Harley Davidson (S.O.B.)” and “Lemon Incest”, he is deservedly a revered French rebel. Reframing her Classic French Perfumer  moniker, JoAnne delivers the easy pret a porter leather in the collection.

Notes: copaiba balsam, benzoin, wild French lavender, guiacwood, incense cedar

iconic punk bands

*Editorial Note: As a musical genre, I have taken great liberties with what may be defined as “punk”. Because I understand music is as dear to the heart as aroma, I ask the reader use as broad a sense of the term “punk”- beyond the classification of music to the spirit of revolution and boundary breaking.

  • Ha! This is great, JoAnne bridges he classical French aesthetic and goes right for the hardcore leather. Her perfumes are fabulous, and I can’t wait to smell these. No need to enter me in the drawing, let some other lucky soul receive these great perfumes.

I am so excited to hear about JoAnne Basset’s new leather collection & can’t wait to try them. During the 80s, I was a teenage punk rocker and I would go see shows all the time and stay current with the DC (Washington) hardcore scene–bands like Minor Threat, Bad Brains, Government Issue **nostalgic sigh**
I used to skateboard to and from classes & still occasionally break out the board and skate to my mailbox (much to the amusement of my neighbors). I love how Einsof’s review captured the scent of each leather with the spirit of punk rock around the world.
Although I think I am drawn to all of the scents, I am favoring Italian Leather; my leather jacket from the 80s still smells like tobacco & patchouli and I love the addition of sticky cistus in the composition too. Favorite punk band, hmm..well it’s hard to mention one, since I thrived on a diet of punk music growing up. Besides the usual well known punk bands like Sex Pistols, Clash, Dead Kennedys, Circle Jerks, Ramones, Black Flag, Misfits, etc…I also really liked SubHumAns, Charged GBH, the Exploited, Stiff Little Fingers, Agent Orange, the Vandals, Bad Brains, Agnostic Front, 7 Seconds, Dead Milkmen, NOFX, Rancid, Pennywise, Dropkick Murphys, and Against Me! Wow, after reading this post, I think I am going to go “kick out the jams” and re-watch the punk rock cult classic movie “Suburbia”. I would love to win the sample set; however, even if I don’t, if JoAnne is the Purveyor of Punk, then I am definitely buying!
Thank you for a nostalgic skate through my punk rock past. USA resident.

I would love to try all of these (sample set) although the Russian Leather sounds extremely amazing because I love a dirty leather. I don’t know if I could name a favorite punk band that I enjoy though.

  • Very nice review it was very interesting, and thanks for the draw! I have not favorite band, but I like some punk bands. I very like leathery perfumes. I also love my leather jackets smell too. I think Arabian Leather would appeal to me the most, because oud – leather combination sounds great. I would like to win the sampler.
    I live in Europe.

  • My husband and I are very fond of dark 80s bands,
he without a doubt has a much larger library of bands that he is familiar with than I.
I enjoyed this article a lot, mostly, for the breadth of places/artists that it touched apon. I had no idea there is an islamic punk scene. glad to hear it though.
I think that is also the perfume I would most like to try, the arabian leather. although, truthfully, sampling all 5 would be the best treat.
    Good luck

  • What a lovely inspiration! I used to listen to a lot of punk music when I was young and I was with my punk boyfriend. We listened to Dead Kennedies, Ramones….but I prefered the after-punk wave with Siouxsie and the Banshees, Joy Division,,,, If I win I would like the sample set even if the most appealing to me is the French Leather. I,m in EU (Spain)

  • I’m afraid I did not get into Punk but the Ramones I do know.Leather however is another subject. I loved my leather jackets of the 80’s with my long wavy hair, masculine style, motorbike ready. I had a maroon-ish color one which was quite unusual and guess what? I still have it today. A little crinkly but this has inspired me to pull it out, wait for some coolish weather and don it!Lovely review Einsof, so articulate and well researched. Spanish leather sounds very exciting.I would love to try the sampler pack. I am a registered US reader.

  • effin yeah! excuse my language just had to punk it ups bit. They all sound amazing. But especially the spanish french and russian. thanks for the draw.

  • “Stuart… i like you. You’re not like the other people, here, in the trailerpark….”

    >;)

    Have fun everyone!

  • I would like to try them all. Though the Italian Leather I’d reach for first because of the wild orange. I couldn’t possibly name a favorite punk band. Sample set for draw please. 🙂 USA

  • Love Joanne’s work and no doubts this will be up to the standard of other perfumes. Einsof, well it would be a privilege to be reviewed by him so I reckon this is a winning combo-His individual style makes me smile and I love the way he has treated the notes here. Unlike Anya I can’t give up a chance to put my name in the hat- she is stronger than I….I’d go for the samples but if I was to pick only one the Arabian would be it. I’m an Oud lover. Punk Rock? never got there but I looked up Christian’s death and they seem pretty cool. I’m an international registered fan 🙂

  • fazalcheema says:

Spanish leather may appeal to me the most…I have recently acquired my first ever Spanish leather fragrance which is SMN Peau D’Espagne and it would be great to test Joanne’s treatment of Spanish heart. it does’t heart Joanne’s Spanish leather includes beautiful notes of cistus and sandalwood. thanks so much for the draw. I am in the US

  • Leather is right up my alley and to me it would be a toss up between the Russian and Italian Leather. And yes the lovely Joanne is definitely the Queen of Roses. 🙂 I have never been a real Punk Rock person but if I had to chose a band it would be the Sex Pistols!!!

  • JazzBelle says:

I think the French leather appeals to me the most! I love how this review describes each leather so brilliantly!

I appreciate how Joanne used her talents to create something different, something edgy. Punk rock captures that sense of edginess and rawness so brilliantly!

I was a huge punk rocker in my teenage days, going to a lot of shows at Gilman in Berkeley. My favorite punk bands are the Sex Pistols and the Clash. A great book that talks about the early British punk rock scene and Malcom McLaren and Vivienne Westwood is called England’s Dreaming by Jon Savage.

Im in the USA, have liked the CaFleureBon Facebook page and would like to win the sampler pack. Thank you!

  • Sex Pistols, Ramones, and the Clash. I love leather scents and these all sound fantastic! I would love to experience the sample set and am in the US.

  • Of JoAnne’s leathers, Spanish Leather appeals most to me. I enjoyed Einsof’s review and his comparisons with punk music. My favorite punk band is Blink 182. My choice would be the sampler set.
