NEW FRAGRANCE: ÇaFleureBon X 4160 Tuesdays Pirate Queen + To Sea To Sea Giveaway

Created to celebrate ÇaFleureBon’s 13th anniversary March 22, 2023, ÇaFleureBon X 4160 Tuesdays Pirate Queen is the fourth and new fragrance collaboration (White Queen, Red Queen and Dark Queen) between independent perfumer Sarah McCartney of 4160 Tuesdays and Michelyn Camen, Editor-in-Chief.  Michelyn Camen came up with the name and idea after hearing Sarah speak about “pirate perfumers, i.e., indies” at the World Perfumery Congress held in Miami June 29th-July 1st, 2022. The brief for Pirate Queen started with Michelyn asking Sarah to “make me a leather perfume that I could love.” She also told Sarah that she didn’t like aquatics, presenting yet another olfactive challenge.

Sarah McCartney of 4160 Tuesdays

Sarah McCartney by Peter Wynn Thompson official photographer for the World Perfumery Congress 2022

Sarah’s Pirate inspiration originally came from a book, Be More Pirate by Sam Conniff Allende, “which was inspired by the alternative society set up in the Golden Age of Piracy, when sailors who did not fit into the cruel, hierarchical class system of the British Navy of the time decided to start their own. One of the fascinating points the book made was that while regulations are there for good reasons, there are some very silly rules which need to be questioned, changed, or got rid of entirely.

Sam Conniff Allende Be More Pirate: Or How to Take On the World and Win Penguin Random House in the United Kingdom©

With ÇaFleureBon x 4160 Tuesdays Pirate Queen the entire process from conception to today’s launch was an ongoing dialogue, first in person in Miami, then remotely and by email  taking over seven months and four mods to complete. The final choice was 2C, which Sarah liked because it reminded her of a schoolyard skipping game from her childhood. She drove her entire team nuts by singing, “A pirate went to sea sea sea, to see what she could see see see, and all that she could see see see was the bottom of the deep blue sea sea sea!”

Key to the heart of Pirate Queen is an osmanthus/cedar accord which smells like animalic leathery apricots. With the addition of Calone©, rum ether, cacao absolute, patchouli, cashmeran, lashed with loads of labdanum and styrax and musks, they had the Pirate Queen and her ship. The finished fragrance also includes cinnamon, nutmeg, Buddhawood, and narcissus variation, and to both Sarah and Michelyn it captured the atmosphere around the Pirate Queen steering her ship in full sail.

It smells of rum, leather, linen, scrubbed woods, spices and sea water. It is unapologetically fierce and courageous in its composition (much like Michelyn and Sarah). The opening is flamboyantly spicy and boozy and intertwines with raw leather. The cacao, patchouli, cinnamon and nutmeg deliver an earthy yet succulent aspect and the styrax adds a sweet tenaciousness. Narcissus is a perfect underpinning material as it fuses the lushness and darker elements of Pirate Queen blending beautifully with labdanum. Ultimately it is a perfume which bottles power and strength in olfactive form.

  • Oh my goodness. I’m not sure how to sum up what sounds appealing about this. Boozy? Yes please. Leather? Yes please. Osmanthus, labdanum, cinnamon… omgyes, this sounds like a scentgasm in a bottle. Add to that the aquatic notes…well, I’m yet to find my perfect aquatic, although Sarah McCartney’s Atlante comes close.
I have a sample of Dark Queen and it’s delicious. Would love to try Pirate Queen and channel River Song. I’m in the UK.

I could not be more excited about this fragrance! It sounds badass. I mean who doesn’t want to smell like a Pirate Queen?? I’m totally onboard, me hearties! I am a huge fan of 4160 Tuesdays, and of Sarah McCartney – who is a superstar IMHO. Thank you, Sarah, Michelyn and Cafleurebon for bringing us this brilliance!

As for the next collab? I would love a Screen Queen perfume which smells like Norma Desmond, wearing a leopard-print turban and red lipstick as she sits at her dressing table (pomades & powder puffs, perfumes & potions aplenty), waxing lyrical about the pictures getting small. A fragrance to help women feel fabulous as we navigate the menopause years ⭐

I have tried Dark Queen (grrrrreat!) and live in the UK. Please enter me into the draw because I need Pirate Queen vibes ASAP. Thank you for the opportunity.

  • Pirate Queen sounds absolutely delightful with its nutmeg and cinnamon notes. I would suggest a Snow Queen fragrance by Sarah McCartney. And yes, I’m a fan….I enjoy The Buddhawood Box. Thank you for another awesome draw. Mich USA

This is a house that has been on my radar for a while I hope to explore further. I would love the next fragrance to be called Arabian Queen and explore the middle east
Thanks a million from the UK

  • Yet another amazing collab between 4160 Tuesdays and Çafleurebon. This sounds very adventurous and cool; a boozy, woody leather fragrance sounds right up my street. Like Michelyn I’m not the biggest fan of aquatic fragrances so really curious to try this one.
I’ve tried all the Queens and my favourite is White Queen, which will be my wedding fragrance when we finally tie the knot.
My suggestion for the next Queen is “Yasss Queen!”

  • All the notes sound sumptuous and beautiful. A house that I have got no experience with put I am intrigued by nonetheless. Love to see the perfumer explore Africa and African Queen would be an apt name. Thanks a lot from the UK

  • Wow, Karl had me at “animalic leathery apricots” but then “unapologetically fierce and courageous” sealed the deal. This sounds really fantastic. I love interesting leathers that offer more than just the standard black leather jacket or worn saddle bag scents that are always popping up. The idea of the ship iteslf being a character in this story is intriguing and I would love to see what the Queen has to offer. I have not tried any of the previous Queen scents, so it would be a first. As far as the name for next year’s collab….I like the sound of Desert Queen – arid, spicy, and warrior-like. I live in NC, USA. Best of luck to all.

The appealing factor of Pirate Queen is the booziness of the opening which then dries to a leather base. Kind if on par with what is associated with a “pirate”. I haven’t tried any of the others in this line, but would love to get a bottle if Pirate Queen. A good name would be Sea Queen, which could bring the aquatic scene to oppose the Pirate Queen.

Ah my favorite indie fragrance house where artistry, imagination, and uniqueness meet beauty and wearability. This sounds stunning (unsurprisingly) and I would be thrilled to try it! Boozy accords and spice mixed with an oceanic accord… bring it on! I’ve tried White Queen and Dark Queen which are as different from each other as their names and both intriguing to my nose. I live in Houston, TX, and I think a Scream Queen could be a cool concept! A dark and stormy night, a mysterious bouquet underlaid by a forgotten glass of wine, a flash of steel, a sharp ozonic intake of breath…

  • I can imagine Sarah McCartney driving her team nuts with this song – “A pirate went to sea sea sea, to see what she could see see see, and all that she could see see see was the bottom of the deep blue sea sea sea!” 🙂

I have the pleasure of experiencing Dark Queen after some interesting chats with her via email. And many others from her creative mind. Her perfumes are definitely unique and may appeal to niche crowds, and one perfume may appeal to one crowd, another to another crowd. They are deep and tell a story. Would be fun if Sarah tried her genius on the yang, masculine angle – Dark Lord, King of the Jungle, Neanderthal Beauty, etc., etc. (Her perfumes are unisex, so these names just mean they exude that character, not that they are for men). For the Queen angle, how about – Elvan Queen, Cafleurebon Queen, Queen of Aoud, Cat Queen, etc.

I like the anarchist character of Pirate Queen and as Karl says – “It is unapologetically fierce and courageous in its composition (much like MIchelyn and Sarah).” Having tried a number of Sarah’s anarchist creations, I would love to try this one too. Thanks for a generous draw, and happy 13th anniversary. From continental United States.

  • First of all, CONGRATS on 13 years Michelyn! WOW!

Second… I am so excited for this release! I have the other 3 Queens, each being beautiful in their own way. I haven’t had anything new from Sarah in a while so I can’t wait to get my hands on this. Thank you, Karl, for the backstory on Pirate Queen. It was much appreciated. Thank you, Michelyn, as always, for everything you do! You and Sarah both are truly a blessing to the fragrance community! Thank you, Sarah, for your generosity and for giving us such wonderful fragrances! You and Michelyn are truly appreciated more than you both know!

I won’t be participating in this giveaway, as I just purchased a bottle from Nir, but I wish the best of luck to everyone.

Sending fragrant wishes and greetings your way from Delaware!

  • jessfish44 says:

These notes sound incredible! I also love the powerful imagery the name invokes. I love boozy and spicy notes together, and really hope I get to sniff this one! I have not sniffed any of the other Queens (though I do own some 4160 fragrances) and would love the opportunity to try one! I think Forest Queen or Snow Queen sound good. Thank you for this chance, from the US!

  • roxhas1cat says:

This is exciting!! I’m not a big fan of leather, so I will be curious to see a creation that pleases Michelyn. I’ve tried all the other “queens” except Dark Queen. Next name……. “The Queen Lives in Me” for the queen that we all are. I hadn’t thought of that skipping song in years!! Seems like I did that hand clapping with a partner to that tune. 4160 Tuesdays are unique for sure. My favorites of the brand are Rhubarb Custard, Captured by Candlelight and Tyger Tyger (which was done for a benefit for Big Cat Rescue in Florida). Thanks for the chance. USA .

  • Johnmc5000 says:

I have never heard of these offerings.
I would have to choose Pirate Queen based on the notes.

The next offering should be called African Queen.

  • While the name Pirate Queen is just totally cool and HOW I’d love to say that when someone asks ‘what are you wearing?” the notes list is the truly mouthwatering aspect! I haven’t tried any of the 4160 Queen scents though I have tried others that I have liked. Queen names? Desert Queen, Dancing Queen (how fruity do we want to go here?) Pinball Queen, Queen of Hearts? I live in the US.

  • What a combination of notes! This sounds like an unapologetic powerhouse, between the fruity leather, the booze, the warm spiciness, and the animalic layers. I’m really looking forward to experiencing this unique take on an oceanic fragrance. I have not tried any of the previous CaFleureBon x 4160 Tuesdays Queens, but I think the next one should be a Fairy Queen, something reminiscent of an enchanted forest. I live in New York, in the USA.

  • “The cacao and patchouli cinnamon and nutmeg deliver an earthy yet succulent aspect and the styrax adds a sweet tenaciousness.”

Sounds fantastic, I’m eager to try the Pirate Queen .
As a small business owner myself, I like
Sarah McCartney dedication to make the new Queen unique , and I have a feeling that under the Michelyn guidance, they cooked a great one.
Sarah is known for creating powerful and complex gourmands , and together with the leather in Pirate Queen , she and Karl already brought me to the pirate ship…
I was introduced to 4160 Tuesdays exactly at Perfumology. White Queen I had a chance to smell there, buying something else. Nir Guy strongly suggested I had to check it out. Beautiful hazelnut creamy , and resinous gourmand .
Being a Pastry Chef I’m drawn to 4160Tuesdays fragrances with sweet nuances , White Queen and Silk, Lace & Chocolate I bought at Perfumology, and I likeCreamy Vanilla Crumble and a few others.
Appreciate the review of the new Queen , and the giveaway campaign

I am a fan of Sarah McCartney and 4160 Tuesdays. My first love from this house is Dark Heart of Old Havana. My SOTD and current love is Crimes of Passion.
Pirate Queen’s appeal to power and strength has drawn my attention. I will be stopping by Perfumology to get my nose on this one. I’m looking forward to it.
Suggestion of 2024 Queen name? Maybe the “Timeless Queen”?
    PA, USA

  • I’ve not tried any of 4160 Tuesdays Queens but Pirate Queen would be a great place to start! I’m fascinated by the notes, as someone who also does not like leather. I’m curious to sniff how calone works with all these boozy spices. Hello from the USA!

  • I struggle with leather as a note also but I’ve never struggled with any 4160 Tuesdays I’ve tried (fav is dirty honey) so I’m really intrigued by this!! Especially that note of apricot?yes. Plus styrax and Musk?uh huh. And the concept is grand. We need more pirate in this era. Especially Queen Pirate. Femme Pirate for the future please!

  • Really cool to hear about the collaboration between CaFleureBon and 4160 Tuesdays. This is my first time hearing about the continuing collaboration so I’ve haven’t tried the other collabs, but it’s interesting to see the different fragrances made that resulted from this. Pirate queen’s notes perfectly match the name, and I’m interested to see how the aquatic notes mix with the more warm, leathery notes. For a name for 2024, maybe something like botanical queen with a focus of more floral and earth notes? From TX, USA.

  • The fact that Pirate Queen is described as being fierce and courageous in its composition got me thinking of Sparta. I’d suggest for the next one to be named Gorgo – the Spartan queen and wife to king Leonidas. So far I’ve not tried any of the Queen series though I own 3 fragrances from 4160 Tuesdays with my favorite of the trio being Meet me at the Corner. I’m in USA

  • This sounds wonderful! I love fierce scents and spices. I haven’t tried any of the Queen fragrances yet, but they are definitely going on my list. I think Jungle Queen would be a fabulous name for a future fragrance! I live in MO, USA.

  • Pirate Queen sounds intriguing, love a leather scent but haven’t found the perfect one yet. Spicy leather with a touch of salty sea dog swigging a bottle rum sounds like an exciting olfactory adventure. Narcissus is one of my favourite scents too, so I’m fascinated about how it will all fit together. I’ve tried all the Queens. Dark Queen is my night-time perfume for when I want to channel 1970s Debbie Harry. White Queen is my partner’s favourite 4160Ts. Red Queen for when only roses will do. For a future Queen – maybe Gipsy Queen – which is also a type of hyacinth. I’m in the UK.

  • pirates + a boozy spice scent? count me in immediately! i too am not fond of aquatic notes. i find that perfumes carrying such notes always smell like wet dog, a child who has rolled around in mud and rain, or dry crusted salt on skin after you’ve gone to the beach, sat all the way back home dripping wet with only a towel separating you from the leather seats of the car. too personal and descriptive? the beauty of scent is that there us always something for everyone and for all sorts of reasons. to make oneself feel some sort of way; to evoke a response, feel beautiful or powerful or confident etc..
to bring comfort or most wonderful of all: capture a moment. whether it be fiction or fact, old or new, to create a scent that clearly sears an image into the brain is a marvelous thing indeed. pirate queen exudes power, confidence, the sea an ever unpredictable force and the woman who conquere it

  • Again, happy 13th anniversary to CaFleureBon: what a wonderful way to celebrate! Pirate Queen sounds creative and lovely, I love a leather. I haven’t tried any of the other “Queens” by 4160 Tuesdays, sadly, but I think the next Queen could be The Snow Queen: I would really love to see a perfume inspired by the Hans Christian Anderson fairy tale. Thanks for this generous giveaway. I’m in WV, USA

  • The osmanthus/leathery cedar sounds like a dream. I am drawn to notes that are leathery, yet a bit boozy. I have not tried the others but would love the chance to. I think the next should be named High Guard Queen- a badass queen you want to come in contact with, but you gotta get past her guardsmen. NY, USA

  • Boozy leather and a salty woody aquatic base says Pirate Queen to me! The rum, cocoa and cedar makes me think of Caribbean roots. The spices are a definite nod to the sea trade. And River Song as a muse! Sign me up. I have not tried any of the Queen scents from 4160 Tuesday but would love to try a Drag Queen fragrance! MD, USA.

  • I love all the boozy sounding notes in this. And all the spices. And I love narcissus when she flexes her muscles. This sounds inventive and great! I have not tried any of the other Queen fragrances. As a suggestion for the next one, how about Fairy Queen? I live in Texas. Thanks for the draw.

  • First, I must thank the EIC of CaFleureBon for her dedication to the content and quality of the team members she works with. Her creative mind is always in overdrive, and the same can be said for Sarah as well.
I am thrilled by this queen!! I believe the fragrance we choose will set our tone for the day and leave those we come in contact with a lasting fragrant memory. Many days, a scent of power and strength would be more than welcome to me. As for queens, how about Desert Queen or Garden Queen? I am in the USA.

It was about time for the Michelyn and Sarah McCartney duo to shine again on the big scene 😉
    I literally started singing:

Fifteen men on the Dead Man’s Chest —
Yo-ho-ho, and a bottle of rum!
Drink and the devil had done for the rest —
Yo-ho-ho, and a bottle of rum!

Fifteen men on the Dead Man’s Chest by Robert Louis Stevenson

I’ve been Sara’s fan , and supporter for many years, I love the diversity of the whole 4160Tuesdays portfolio , and also her personality. Currently i own 9 of her creations, but at one point I had 14 , including the 3 , Red , White and Black Queens . 4 fragrances i finished, and unfortunately White Queen bottle was stolen from me
4160 Tuesdays Pirate Queen is breath of air on a pirate ship, during the Golden Age of Piracy air. Leathery, boozy, sweet and spicy, I like every single facet of the new Queen.
If I have to rate my favorite 4160Tuesdays fragrances….hard task , depending on the mood I’m in, still:
    1. The original Maxed Out , like Sarah herself confirmed , the formula was changed , and the cumin was toned down significantly.
    2. The Waft from the Loft/ Eau my Soul
    3. White Queen
    All profiles I already follow , @waltherp99bg
    Thanks a lot

  • I haven’t tried the other Queens, but boozy wood is right up my alley, especially with a touch of salt. In the US

I am really interested in the leather accord and how it interacts with the cinnamon. Surprisingly, I think raw, darker leathers work with sweeter notes better than a soft leather. And of course the boozy element of this perfume really appeals to me as well. Been an admirer of Sarah McCartney and her work for a while, but I am yet to own a bottle. And unfortunately I have not tried her previous collaboration with Cafleurebon.

I am located in California, USA.

I wish I had the time for pirate on a old ship , in the middle of the ocean vacation, away from the big city, the work and the every day pressure.
For now Pirate Queen would do , it feels so adventurous, it’s boozy , resinous , with darker leather.
I love White Queen, and Black Velvet Cafe, the second i bought for the 3th time in December . First time for $145 , third for $180 , outstanding fragrance
Thank you Karl , and Sarah McCartney

  • Oh boy, what a great idea of creating a fragrance to celebrate CaFleureBon’s aniversary. To be honest, I have not tried yet any of the fragrances of CaFleureBon x 4160, but I would love to.
I think the perfect name for the next 4160Tuesdays x CaFleurebon is Magician Queen.
I lovea that the collaboration between Michelyn Camen and Sarah McCartney of 4160 Tuesdays has resulted in the creation of this new fragrance called Pirate Queen, which is inspired by the book “Be More Pirate” by Sam Conniff Allende. I am excited that the fragrance is a leather perfume with notes of osmanthus, cedar, rum ether, cacao absolute, patchouli, cashmeran, labdanum, styrax, and musks. The inclusion of cinnamon, nutmeg, Buddhawood, and narcissus variation adds to its earthy and succulent aspect. The fragrance captures the atmosphere of a pirate queen steering her ship in full sail with its fierce and courageous composition. Leather fragrance to suit Michelyn? Tall order if you ask me.
Pirate Queen is nowhere near a pungent, sweaty leather, not at all. Of course there’s leather, but in the right proportion with rum ,patchouli and cocoa. Pirate Queen from 21st century.
4160 Tuesdays is a house I stumbled across unintentionally, but I’m glad I did. I admit I’m a vain man, and getting positive attention is not the main reason, but still really important one when I’m buying fragrances. If you’re like me, or know such guys and you’re looking for a present, look no further – Eau My Soul both smells amazing , and positive attention is there each and every time.
Pirate Queen is a different fragrance, but just as good as Eau My Soul i believe.
Next year Queen hmmm , I’m thinking Gertrude Bell knows as “the female Lawrence of Arabia.” I would like 24′ Queen to be a fragrance somehow named, and inspired by her.
    Exciting giveaway, USA
    Regards

  • I love that this concept defies expectations, going beyond piracy’s more nautical associations and referencing its more intellectual ones (Be More Pirate sounds like an interesting read). I assume Pirate Queen’s combination of leathery apricots and woods, spice, and lots of musk is heady stuff. Interesting use of narcicuss as well.

I’m in the USA. I haven’t tried CaFleureBon X 4160 Tuesdays Red Queen, White Queen, or Dark Queen, so I’d love to try this one. For the next in the series, maybe “Neon Queen”. Thanks for the giveaway!

  • 4160 Tuesdays is one of my favorite houses and Sarah McCartney is one of my favorite perfumers. I love the name that Michelyn came up with, and like her, I tend to stay away from aquatics. However, Pirate Queen sounds like an aquatic I would enjoy. I am especially intrigued by the notes of rum, cacao, labdanum, spices, and narcissus. The addition of calone must blend beautifully into the composition, giving it a hint of sea water. As Michelyn points out, Pirate Queen sounds like a strong and powerful blend.

White Queen is my favorite so far; I love the smoky and nutty concoction. I would love to see one of these for the next 4160Tuesdays x ÇaFleureBon Queen: Forest Queen, Cosmic Queen, or Snow Queen. I imagine Forest Queen being a resinous evergreen, Cosmic Queen an ethereal space-like scent, and Snow Queen a combination of lactonic notes and petrichor.

Thank you, Karl, for the great review, and thank you to Sarah McCartney for the generous giveaway. I am located in the USA.

I love supporting pirate perfumers. I appreciate this site because it is how I have become familiar with so many risk-taking independent perfumers. I love anything with osmanthus, so Pirate Queen is definitely a perfume I will seek out. I haven’t tried any of the CaFleureBon collaborations with 4160 Tuesdays.
I think a good name for the next collaboration would be Take Over Queen. I am thinking about what Leonard Cohen once said : “I wish the women would hurry up and take over.”
    I live in the USA.

  • What appeals to me about f 4160 Tuesdays Pirate Queen is it’s a fierce unapologetic composition of rum, leather, spices and woods. I can imagine Captain Jack Sparrow and a Pirate Ship.
I have yet to try 4160 Tuesdays Red Queen, White Queen or Dark Queen but I think a good name for next fragrance would be Forest Queen. A green and tranquil deep dive into the foliage of a mystical forest scent. Thanks for the giveaway. Greetings from the USA.

  • Oh my , Pirate Queen is exactly the name I suggested 2…or it was 3 years ago , during lockdowns.
I don’t if my suggestion played some role , I very much hope so… at least 🙂
To my knowledge Sarah McCartney is British, still wonder if she took some inspiration from the actual historical figure know as The Pirate Queen – Grace O’Malley , The Pirate Queen of Ireland. One of the most famous pirates ever . Seafaring, piracy , rebel and politician on land , she’s was fearsome, a true legend.
Pirate Queen, the fragrance is just like Grace O’Malley , adventurous and brave creation, with leather, rum , and even slightly seductive properties.
I’ve heard about previous 3 queens , but have not smelled them.
“Captured by Candlelight” is my hidden gem , no one knows about. One of those “I don’t want you to know what I’m wearing”. It’s a gift I received for my birthday a few years ago.
Lately I’m more interested in coffee fragrance, and a dark , no or bare minimum of sweetness grounded “Coffee Queen” would be great.
    Thanks for the draw

  • The name of the 2024 Queen doesn’t have to be a single Queen related only , I mean why not just “Two Queens” , with Michelyn and Sarah McCartney images on the front and back labels on the bottle?
I genuinely love the daring character of Pirate Queen, especially the rum , on top of leathery apricots, cacao , patch and resins. Gutsy fragrance for those who still dare to dream, and live their live to the fullest.
From 4160Tuesdays i do own 30ml bottles of Eau My Soul and Silk, Lace & Chocolate

Thanks for the lovely writeup. This fragrance sounds like a really neat composition, with the use of osmanthus/cedar to create the leathery apricot notes, interjected with that oceanic fresheness of Calone and the the use of narcissus and labdanum in the base. The use of cinnamon and nutmeg to create that warm trade wind touch is also neat.

I certainly would love to try this fragrance.
