“My river runs to thee: Blue sea, wilt welcome me?

My river waits reply. Oh sea, look graciously!

I’ll fetch thee brooks

From spotted nooks, –Say, sea,

Take me!” ~ The Outlet, by Emily Dickinson

New England artisan perfumer Neil Morris harbors a lifelong kinship with natural forces and the arts of divination. He has studied under the tutelage of such authorities as the late astrologer Helen “Betty” Caulfield and Laurie Cabot – the famous Salem witch. In as many times as we have gathered in his studio, Neil has utilized runes, Tarot decks and other tools to shed light upon my own path over the years. Divination has been as much a part of our custom as the exploration of aromatic materials. Therefore, it comes as no surprise that the elements speak to him – water, in particular. I’ve teased him affectionately (and relentlessly) about his love for aquatics, his utilization of oceanic musks and limpid florals in combination with juicy fruit in his fragrances. Neil adores the sea, the beach, any body of water. So, when he revealed that he’d been working on a fragrance revolving around his awareness of the innate intelligence of moving water – well. It felt perfectly in character (and although a Sun in Virgo man, Cancerian traits in his natal chart are palpable, frankly).

Neil relates walking through the woods on a summer day with a friend; they encountered a waterfall and sat down beside it in order to revel in its beauty. A sudden realization struck him: a conversation was taking place in the immediate vicinity – was it coming from the rush of water, or behind the waterfall? His friend heard nothing; it seems. This experience altered Neil’s consciousness, however – and he has been sentient ever since of these voices whenever he’s near running water: ergo, Voices In Water.

Neil Morris Fragrances Voices In Water feels both intuitive and a departure from our perfumer’s usual body of work. It’s staunchly marine in nature and bears some of his beloved fragrant fingerprints: oceanic musk, aldehydes, the aqueous lilt of melodic waterlily and freesia tones. Ozone appears in the guise of Floralozone® from IFF: fresh, aldehydic and potent, it contributes a lasting lift and echoes of the ocean. Brininess is also summoned by a dry salt accord which provides a mineralic effect upon warm skin, and the familiar rain note which has been popular since the 1960s (a hippie’s mainstay). Geraniol imparts lovely rosy/herbal/fruity notes; Hedione®’s diffusivity lends a clear-voiced jasmine lightness tinged with citrus. Alpha ionone weaves in nuances of woody, earthy violet and berries. All of these materials are oft-employed colors in Neil’s olfactory palette and wielded with a loving hand.

Neil Morris Fragrances Voices in Water Review

The unexpected arrives in Neil’s choice of aldehydes: lavender aldehyde, with its herbal/green/woodiness – and mandarin aldehyde, fruit tinged with metal. Pineapple is juicy, not overbearing – because balance is all. Recreating a breezy, windblown seascape means uncovering components which – deftly dosed – will anchor its limpidity without weighing it down. How to further embellish an aquarelle without heft? A waft of black tea with its leathery murmur finds itself in bourbon’s embrace – just. Instead of wine-dark Homerian patchouli, the choice is made to favor Clearwood® instead: echoes of aged wood, earthy, minty – without the weedy/dirty must. This woodiness, driftwood-resonant – is augmented by iso mohanol, an aromachemical possessed of spicy intensity and powdery sandalwood-similar qualities. If we are to be marooned at sea, we will most certainly enjoy the sensation. As unorthodox as this melange sounds, Neil has alchemized the lot so that it works brilliantly, from initial crystalline inception to the delicate fluid trail of wood, salt and marine zephyr.

Neil Morris Fragrances Voices In Water is an eloquent, original perfume full of tender revelations – one which took me by surprise, particularly because aquatics in general have been my least favorite genre, as many attempts ring false to my nose. I’m grateful for the opportunity to rectify that opinion, and believe that this is among the year’s finest thus far.

Notes: pineapple, mandarin aldehyde, lavender aldehyde, Floralozone (IFF), iso mohanol, geraniol, waterlily, freesia, Hedione® (Firmenich), rain note, black tea, alpha ionone, dry salt, bourbon note, ocean musk, Clearwood® (Firmenich)

  • The notes of this fragrance remind me of a concoction that Histoires de Parfums would put together. Overall it sounds quite nice. Oceanic fragrances have been quite overdone so it is always refreshing to find a unique twist on them. Pineapple makes an interesting addition to the top notes. I have yet to sample anything by Neil Morris. From Canada.

  • As for Ida, aquatics are not my favorites and I’m still looking for something that will change my mind and attract me to the genre. This sounds like it has potential. Never tried anything from Neil Morris. I live in Germany.

  • What a fabulous review! There are SO many wonderful scents, I can’t pick a favorite.
    Here’s my favorite part.

Thanks for the generous giveaway, I live in the USA.

  • I’m originally from Boston, many years traveling through New England, Cape Cod, etc. A scent that would take me back there even though I’m down in the Wild West of Texas now, would be amazingly refreshing. The aldehyde notes sound super special, blended with everything else (plus the bourbon!). I’m sold. Would love to try this out. Thank you, TJ (the Notetaker)

  • Ida’s writing could make me want to try almost anything and this review is no exception. Am tentative about aquatics, but the use of aldehydes, lavender and fruits make this sound very intriguing in addition to the background of the perfumer being so interesting! Would love to try this. Live in Connecticut

  • Dearest Ida! I am so very grateful to you for writing this lovely and heartfelt review of my new perfume – Voices In Water! I am so happy you like it – especially since I am well aware that aquatics are really not your favorite genre. And thanks too to Michelyn who is so supportive and encouraging and who provides us with this wonderful Cafleurebon! Love to both!

  • Trinity33 says:

Aquatics are not my favorite fragrance category either but this sounds like it has enough beach flora incorporated to make it interesting. The lavender and mandarin aldehydes and pineapple conjure images of sea grass. Black tea, dry salt and the clearwood gives earth vibes. Sounds lovely. I’ve not tried any Neil Morris fragrances before. Commenting from MD, USA.

  • commodity says:

Not a big fan of aquatics! I am looking for an aquatic scent that speaks to me though. The pineapple and black tea notes make it more intriguing hopefully that’s the one for me. Never tried this house.

What I appreciated about Ida’s review was her thorough and deeeeeeeeepppppp breakdown of this fragrance (3rd & 4th paragraphs).

I live in Waldorf, MD, USA. Unfortunately, I have not tried any Neil Morris fragrances yet.

I experience an ongoing relationship with Rain – dancing in it, singing in it, long-walking in it. Can’t get enough of it.

  • I love the story of Neil Morris next to the waterfall and hearing voices. This is so in keeping with someone who learned from a witch (in the best sense of a witch) who is into astrology. I can’t wait to find out what arcane secrets are contained in this scent. I love marine notes, and my favorite NM creation is Aegean. Based in the US.

  • ll grhm I live in USA says:

I do not have a favorite Neil Morris perfume, but he is right, waterfalls do speak if you listen and are lucky. I heard a waterfall sing, thought it was someone singing along with water then I realized the sound I heard was coming from inside me and was resonating from my collar bone. I love waterfalls.

  • The story behind this is very moving – I would love to get to know this house more!
I love the ocean and find that the energy given off by just being in the vicinity of it is a joy. Would love to try this and dip my toes in what Neil has to offer

  • Similar to Ida I am usually not a fan of aquatic scents. That being said, an eloquent fragrance with oceanic musk but also pineapple notes and hints of woodiness sounds very intriguing. Don’t have a favorite Neil Morris fragrance yet but would love to check this one out. I live in the USA.

  • I do like a well balanced marine fragrance. Voices in Water sounds great, and with pineapple! Thanks for your thoughts Ms Ida. Mich USA

  • Oh this sounds wonderful, and I love how Ida broke down all the varied elements in the scent, and how Mr Morris designed the perfume. I enjoyed the layers that Ida described. I don’t have a fav Neil Morris scent, unfortunately, but I would love to try this one. Thank you for the draw and the review. I’m in the us.

  • NiceVULady says:

What a wonderful glimpse into this marvelous perfumer. I also have cast runes and read Tarot. How lovely to know that I share that with this wonderfully creative and artistic gentleman. Voices in Water sounds truly beautiful. Thank you so much to Ida for this review and the gorgeous photographs. Thank you also to Neil Morris for this fabulous draw. I’m in the USA

    Thank You for the reviews.
I found myself smiling about ‘granny’s head shop’, it was an instant scent snapshot! Wonderful!

  • Bacuzzi Babs says:

    Ooooh COUNT ME IN !

Not much of a floral person usually -except for rose and jasmine- but I adore narcissus. ADORE.

And I love the name so much, I could almost hear Neil saying it. I usually bring wine but this generous offer of flowers and of spring.

I mean. Spring in a bottle, seriously. Who wouldn’t want that ?

  • Aquatics are probably my least favorite too but aldehydes and Violet will do it for me surely. Unfortunately I don’t have much experience with Neil Morris perfumes, the one I have and love is burnt amber. I am in Germany

  • In my country people talk with low voice about witches and things that go along with them, so I am glad to see that this is not Neil’s Morris case. I am not keen to aquatic perfumes although I am a Virgo, too. By the way, don’t you think Virgos are all so romantic, melodramatic and artistic? I live in Romania and Cathedral is for sure my favorite vault fragrance. Thank you

  • Notes: pineapple, mandarin aldehyde, lavender aldehyde, Floralozone (IFF), iso mohanol, geraniol, waterlily, freesia, Hedione® (Firmenich), rain note, black tea, alpha ionone, dry salt, bourbon note, ocean musk, Clearwood® (Firmenich). I am intrigued by the notes I am not fan of aquatics but this fragrance seems to be different. I have not tried anything by this house house but I am intrigued by the rain water note in particular. Thanks a million from the United Kingdom

Great piece by Ida I am not a fan of aquatics but I am curious and interested to by the notes especially bourbon and rain water notes. A house that I have no experience with I am afraid but would love to explore. Thanks a lot from the UK

  • It’s been a long time since I wore an aquatic / oceanic scent. But this one sounds lovely, the name is also very eloquent Voices In Water. Lovely review, would love to win. Living in the EU

  • ElenaChiss says:

Interesting story behind this creation of Neil. I never heard voices when I was near a river or a waterfall, but perhaps I never listened to them as I was distracted by other things. I will make sure to pay more attention and, perhaps, they will reveal to me as well.
I am in Romania, Europe. Thank you!

  • I really liked that this sounds truly unique and extremely well thought out and put together. Also that Ida, not being a big fan of aquatics, enjoys this speaks very highly for it. The combination of notes and use of aromachemicals is also very interesting and honestly refreshing that Mr. Morris is disclosing these chemicals openly rather than not as is so often seemingly done. I’ve not yet tried any Neil Morris fragrances but would love to start with this one. No elemental relationships stick out to me for myself however. Thanks from CT USA for the generous draw and wonderful review.

  • Brayton Beanland says:

With all the bad news lately and being mostly cooper up indoors, summer in a bottle sounds just what this world needs.
I’m new to the world of perfume and ÇaFleurBon (my journey started with 4160 Tuesday’s Red Queen in January) and a lot to catch up on (a decade so it seems). Reading the articles gives me much joy and opened up a world of niche perfume houses and noses to explore!

  • naomi rooney says:

This sounds like just what I need after a stuffy day – a bottle of summer! It is also my favorite genre of fragrance, the floral chypre! I love a good narcissus scent and with civet- oh my! I can’t wait to try it. Thanks for the draw!

  • tridungnguyentdn says:

Neil’s choice of flowers for this fragrance; plumeria, narcissus, gardenia and rose are voluptuous! This does sound like summer in a bottle and a happy, joyous scent which is definitely needed now. I love that Çafleurebon introduces us to so many indie perfumers. I’ve never tried any of Neil Morris fragrances but would love to.

  • Johnny Brown says:

I am always on the lookout for floral bouquets that stand out so I’d be very curious to try this. I am especially interested in how the aldehydes and narcissus add a vintage touch. I am in the USA.

  • Wow, that’s quite a mix. The notes lineup does not sound like they’d work together but they must have been blended very well to leave such an impression on Ida. I’d be stoked to try Voices in Water out. I’m in USA

  • Tony Duncan says:

I really like the name and the sentiment behind it. Thanks for bringing us the latest news and also articles on vintage fragrances. Peace and Joy!

  • Bailie Babbage says:

I would like to experience this version on summer in a bottle…it sounds lovely. CaFleurebon always has the best of writes explaining about different fragrances that I’d probably never of otherwise…

  • Derrik Owen says:

What I loved most about i will bring you flowers is the combination of notes , it sounds like a walk through a whimsical garden from alice in wonderland with a little mischief thrown in.

What I appreciate most about cafleurebon is the positivity it highlights in the shared hobby and passion of hours. It’s cultivated such a great community for positive discussion and shared knowledge.

  • henry cole says:

Summer in a bottle, how to capture summer, bring somebody sunlight. We could all use some cheering up in these days. Why not by nobody less than the godfather of american independent perfumery.
Count me in on this one!

  • Barron Davie says:

This sounds so lovely and cheerful. I have been smelling early blooms on my daily walks and they make me smile. This sounds like an antidote for today’s world.

  • GEORGE KANATAS says:

Ah, the smell of sea, salt, and sand. There is no elixir on this blessed earth like it! If this perfume is an ode to this smell, I would love to have it, and be introduced to the work of Neil Morris. Thank you for this draw, greetings from Athens-Greece.

  • marcopietro says:

My sun is in the sign of Cancer and water is a vital and indispensable element in every aspect of my emotional life. However, as well expressed by Ida, I have always looked with suspicion on most of the marine fragrances, I always find the combo partially resolved with artificial results that often play flat and monochords. In this case the result seems to fully satisfy the most demanding expectations.
I like many fragrances created by Neil Morris, I owned and loved Gotham.
    I live in EU
    Thanks!

  • Richard Potter says:

The list of notes sounds unusual, to be sure, but intriguing. This sounds like one that I simply must get my nose on.

I have zero experience with aquatics, and have yet to experience Neil Morris’ artistry, though I’ve been longing to try his Rose Afire.

    Another stellar review, Ida!USA

  • I’ve read quite a bit about Neil Morris fragrances, but I haven’t had a chance to try any yet. I’d be interested in seeing how aldehydes work here as well as the freesia and black tea notes. Of all natural elements I have always been drawn to the sea, which I have missed a lot this summer. I am in the USA.

  • Ida’s description of Neil’s inspiration is great. I too hear voices in moving water, sometimes I hear music. I have no tried a Neil Morris Fragrance. I live in the US.

  • Great note lists. Love the salt note a lot not to mention the “familiar rain note” No fave from the house as of yet. US

  • Shamrock1313 says:

Haven’t tried any from the house, but Ida’s description has me ready to give it a go. I’m a big fan of aquatics and definitely need to give it a try.

  • Ida, what a fantastic review, knowing that aquatics are not normally your preference, the fact that you have proclaimed this to be one of the finest fragrances of 2020 is an accomplishment indeed! If anyone could do it, it would be Neil. He’s an unabashed artist, a gentleman and just a wonderful person.

This is definitely not your run-of-the-mill aquatic, and Neil’s choice of aldehydes really do sound amazing, and the black tea note really piques my interest.

As to which Neil fragrance is my favorite? It’s so very hard to choose, since they are all so well constructed and fantastic. Off the top of my head, I’d have to say Desert Wind (which for some reason I keep calling Desert Rose. but I don’t know why).

Like Neil. I’m a Virgo with a penchant and understanding of things aquatic. It whispers to me as it does to Neil. I could never fathom being away from water for too long, be it the ocean, a stream, a brook or a river.

    I’m in Massachusets.

I’m struck by Ida’s description of the mix of natural and synthetic notes here. She indicates that these are used in skillful balance, so I am eager to smell Voices in Water. I don’t know any Neil Morris fragrances, but I always enjoy the reviews of them at CaFleureBon. I live in North Carolina in the US, but the closest I get to natural forces is my walk in the park for 40 minutes every day.

  • Moving waters have always been a powerful elements since the childhood. I would really Love to try this creation as a first from the brand: i am really curious sbout thise lavander aldehydes in s context of an aquatic scent… Greetings from Slovakia!

  • Somehow this article triggered a stronger than usual emotional response in me. Maybe because of the photo of Neil and Fredda, that I had read about in a previous post. Or maybe because of the water element, that is my mother element, since I am a Piscean and feel both strong attraction and some degree of fear towards it. Funnily, I have no fear of fire, air and definitely not earth; maybe because water hosts such vast possibilities, forms of life, depths and VOICES, no doubt.
I enjoyed that water seemed to have spoken to Neil in a gentle manner – not in a salty, stormy, threatening tone which would have been given by a darker composition; not in a tame manner which strips away water’s wilderness either; but in an interesting, innovative language which blends fruity, floral, gourmand and chemical notes which I would be very curious to smell.
This would also be my first Neil Morris experience.
    I am in the EU.

  • I’d love to feel the aldehydes in a marine themed fragrance, who knows, maybe I will hear the voices, too :).
I have yet to sample Morris fragrances, but i’m sure the wait is worthy.
I live in Europe and i fear water – does this count as a relationship ? :)))

  • I love Neil Morris’ small personal descriptions for his creations. I’m happy to read you highlighted and elaborated on this. Interesting read.

    I live in the UK.

I have been looking at AFIRE from Neil’s signature collection which is a fragrance I’m considering to wear on date-night.

Ida has painted a unique picture of earthy, herbal and aquatic composition which doesn’t seem to resemble any others out there. Thank you for the beautiful review Ida. As usual, my favorite part of this review is the way you talk about the different Aroma Chemicals and the way they interact with each other. Your friendship with the perfumer comes out in every review you do of his perfumes.

I haven’t had the opportunity to smell a Neil Morris fragrance before.

    Cheers from WI, USA

  • Ida’s description helps me to picture this fragrance and it’s notes vividly. Aquatics isn’t my favorite category but this fragrance Per Ida’s description has aldehydes, lavender aldehydes, woody/herbal notes along with pineapple notes which isn’t overbearing. I really enjoy some of these notes so there’s hope for me yet I’m from the US

  • I’m always looking for a good use of freesia in fragrance and the aquatic nature of this one is intriguing. I don’t have many aquatic fragrances perhaps because I tend to like the idea more than the result. I haven’t tried any Neil Morris fragrances so this may be one that changes that narrative. I live in the USA.

  • When I read Ida’s review of Voices in Water, much as I enjoyed the initial story of Neil’s interest in intuitive arts, I felt this fragrance will “ring false to my nose” due to the presence of so many chemicals instead of natural oils. But Ida later clarified how this is an alchemical work of art in the hands of a master perfumer. I am drawn more to hills and mountains and forests, not so much water. Will be definitely interested in checking this perfume from an intuitive, though full of modern chemicals. Ida’s reviews are always worth reading and pondering over. Thanks for the review and the draw. Writing from the USA.

  • The bourbon and salt notes in this are exactly what I have been looking for in a new fragrance! Surprisingly, there aren’t too many fragrances with salty notes that appeal to me and I hope to try this one and like it. Haven’t tried anything from Neil Morris before. USA

I have never tried a Neil Morris fragrance, therefore, I don’t have a favorite. What appeals to me about this fragrance is the lavender aldehyde and its use in an aquatic fragrance. My ongoing relationship has always been with water, whether swimming through it or letting it head off my skin in a nice warm shower. Water relaxes me and it is my favorite natural element. Kind regards from Illinois, USA

Ida, I really enjoyed your review on Neil Morris Voices In Water. Neil Morris has a personal connection with the element of water and portrays that passion into this aquatic fragrance that also encompasses so many other facets including a bourbon notes, citrus, florals, and even a tea note. I also experience an ongoing relationship with the natural element of water and I am facinated how every living cell is composed of water and how it’s truly essential to everything we do. I am from Ohio, USA.

  • Oh Ida – the stories you write. I so love your reviews. I’m not a big believer in Astrology, but as a Cancer, water speaks to me too. The tides, the colours, the crashing of the waves, but above all – the scent. There is nothing else like it, and to capture it’s essence in a bottle to enjoy when the need arises, is a gift. I love Neil’s scents – I love how they each tell a story or create an image. I would love to enter this so generous giveaway. I live in Australia.

  • After reading Ida’s article about Voices in Water, I am ready to try some of the beautiful unusual notes in this fragrance by Neil Morris. Black tea, pineapple, lavender, all sound great! I have not tried any of Neil’s fragrances. Thank you for the chance, USA
