Neil Morris Fragrances Forever Friends Review (Neil Morris)+ A Fragrance for Fredda Draw

Neil Morris of Neil Morris Fragrances composed Forever friends for his friend Fredda

“We can do no great things; only small things with great love.” ~ Mother Teresa (Neil Morris’ favorite quote of hers)

Fredda Raimondi died in 2019

Often there is a presentiment as I ferret through my drawers, shelves, boxes searching for a specific something. Such was the case  last week when I was rifling through flacons from independent niche perfumer and dear friend Neil Morris. It wasn’t coincidence when the fragrance he created for his lifelong best friend Fredda came to hand: it’s been a year this month since her passing. They first met in 1971 and their friendship continued to flourish, spanning nearly 50 years.

As I sprayed my hand, I mused upon the nature of kindred spirit and that attribute which genuine friendship possesses: the capacity to transcend time and space. Neil Morris Fragrances Forever Friends is a lasting tribute to their relationship and her inner and external beauty. I can’t properly explain why it hasn’t claimed my attention since – but now feels the right time to share this marvelous classic perfume with you.

Fredda was above all a joyous, elegant soul filled with hope and humor. She lived and laughed large. When she was diagnosed with a rampant cancer which did not respond well to treatment, Fredda and Neil traveled great distances to seek alternative means as conventional therapies failed. Like any gentle warrior, she fought until it was absolutely infeasible to do otherwise –  with courage and conviction. It is this indomitable essence which Neil wanted to celebrate in fragrant homage, and I think that you will experience his parfum filled with exuberant loveliness much as I do.

If one is of a certain age (and even if you’re not), aldehydes frequently spring to mind when you reflect upon elegance in perfume: a diffusive introduction which bedazzles enticingly and tickles your senses. They can provide a lively and tonic, often playful facet which grabs you by the nostrils. If you’ve been raised in the heyday of aldehydic florals (Chanel No.5 or Lanvin Arpège, for example) it’s second nature to you – so their employment was absolutely (sic) intuitive. Aldehyde C8 emphasizes orange and it’s reprised in Neil’s choice of mandarin orange (a favorite note of Fredda’s which also pops in Hermès’ Elixir de Merveilles, which she loved)) and the delicate succulence of tender pear. A dash of geraniol imparts that rosy herbal note with a hint of lemon; it’s very soigné in the company of grassy, bell pepperish galbanum and heavy, balsamic floral narcissus accompanied by an equally balsamic vetiver. There exists a warm/cool duality within Forever Friends: these companionable notes nestle themselves into an amber eiderdown – again a tribute, this time to Fredda’s beloved Must de Cartier with its distinctive paradoxical Oriental allure. Fredda adored musky, ambery vanillic fragrances –  and Neil lovingly obliged with a plush bed of amber, vanilla, sandalwood, olibanum and benzoin. The murmur of a sheer musk coupled with cedar completes his aromatic tapestry.

May we each be blessed to experience such enduring, selfless love in our lifetimes. Through the medium of perfume we are privileged to share their affection as it assumed fragrant form – and that is its own singular gift.

Notes: aldehyde C8, mandarin orange, pear, red currant, geraniol, galbanum, French narcissus, vetiver, amber, sandalwood vanilla, sheer musk, olibanum, benzoin, cedar

My bottle was a gift from the perfumer – but my nose is entirely my own…

In speaking with Neil, it came to our attention that Fredda was an energetically philanthropic person who found the suffering of others excruciating – particularly that of children with cancer. Her favorite charity was St Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital. Not for guilt purposes or coercion, my friends (please!)

Neil Morris has informed us that he plans to donate a portion of the sales proceeds to St.Jude’s in her memory. To do so order any vault fragrance and in the comments write “I would like to buy Forever Friends”. Neil ships worldwide with any purchase of $70.

  • Dearest Ida, you have captured the memory of my friend with your words. I can not thank you enough for taking the time to write this. And my thanks to Dear Michelyn for publishing Ida’s beautiful tribute.
    Love, Neil

  • Ida’s review made me feel like I need this to dab on the friends I love, both men and women, so we can be in harmony right down to a drop of the same scent. I am sorry for Neil’s loss, but how much he loves his friend could not have inspired anything less than a shining star of a tribute. I have no NM, had always confused him with another perfumer. That won’t happen again. I live in the USA.

  • So sorry for your loss, Ida and Neil. St Jude’s is a phenomenal organization and any money given to them will be well used. Like Fredda, I also enjoy a strategically placed aldehyde in my fragrance. Forever Friends sounds like a lovely tribute. I’m in the US.

  • A great review, as always, Ida, I simply want to go and order it right now. It’s a wonderful tribute to a special friend one can’t forget. My first perfume was Arpege, and I was a fan of Must de Cartier years ago, it seems the type appeals to many of us. Neil Morris is a genius with perfume. I do favor several of his Vault offerings. Prowl, Taj, and Rose Afire are the ones I love the best.

  • Sounds like a lovely fragrance to celebrate 50 years of friendship, one that can transcend time and space. Have not heard of this brand before but now I know! Thanks for the draw. Regards from Boston USA.

  • Aldehides! I have not been raised when the aldehydes had their glory in perfumery so they are still something I love from the distance. Although lately I tried to come closer to them with perfumes such as Comme de Garcons 2 and Dia. In Forever Friends aldehyde C8 emphasizez orange, ehich I also love so I am curious and I assume it must be a beautiful blend.

To pay tribute to a friend with a fragrance you create, what can be more beautiful?

I am not familiar with any Neil Morris fragrances. I live in EU.

  • I enjoyed the intimacy of this review. I haven’t yet had a chance to try and of NM fragrances, but I am continually intrigued by reading the note lineups.

  • I like the story behind this perfume. That it’s kind of a tribute to his best friend of 50 years, wow! It’s cool that notes she loved even notes from fragrances she loved are also included. It’s quite touching and sentimental and I appreciate that. Almost like they are sharing their friendship with the world! I live in the USA and havent tried any Neil Morris fragrances as of yet. This one is obviously very special and filled with love, thanks for sharing it and thanks for the generous draw!

  • What I liked most about ida’s review was it seemed as if she’d known them just as long , the care and detail put into the review was a beautiful tribute.

Unfortunately I’ve not tried anything from the house.

  • Somewhere between Fredda, lifelong friendship and fragrance, this was a stellar review and a touching tribute to someone who surely must have been an amazing woman. I wear Neil’s Rumi whenever I need a perfumed bear hug and when life grinds me to a fine powder. The note list intrigues me no end, even if I’m far too far away – in Denmark.

  • I am sorry hear about Neil loss it is apt that this was created to do justice to their long friendship. I am intrigued by the notes, especially amber, sandalwood, musk, olibanum and cedar. Thanks a million from EU United Kingdom

  • I am sorry to hear about Neil’s loss I am sure Neil has pulled out all the stops in memory of his friendship and love for Fredda. I am intrigued by the notes and I am afraid I have not tried anything by Mr Morris but I have heard only great things about this house. Cheers from EU United Kingdom

I love nothing more than sniffing fragrances with friends – recalling good and sad memories – having a laugh and a cry. For me, fragrance and friendship go together. Neil made Intimate Vanilla to make me smile and I an grateful. I’m also grateful for yet another lovely story from Ida. And a most generous giveaway. Thank you all.

  • This is a lovely tribute to a lifetime friend. Sorry for your loss Neil Morris and the world for the loss of a lovely spirit. Part of Handel’s Messiah played in my head when I read this review – Oh death where is thy sting? Thank you Neil for making a beautiful scent to honor a friend. I’m in USA

  • Ida described in such beautiful words how the spirit of a friendship can be memorialised in a scent. I live in the netherlands

  • Bryant Worley says:

What I enjoyed in the review was the way Ida thoroughly explained the inspiration behind the fragrance, and I really appreciated that Neil came to know his friend’s taste so well, that he created a fragrance that she would probably have adored/cherished. I have not had the privilege of sampling Neil’s fragrances, but will change that. I live in Waldorf, MD, USA.

  • I love perfums with adored musky, ambery vanillic and citrus fragrances All the names you mention there been part of my perfums collection in some point.
Never come accros with Neil Morris frangrance.Thank you from England,EU.

  • Ida’s review is a beautiful tribute to the lovely friendship of Neil and Fredda, condolences to you both. The fragrance notes are amongst my favorites and the name so perfectly suited. I will look at Neil Morris website as soon as I’m done posting to read more about his fragrances, his perfumes are new to me. I also donate to St. Jude’s and love that he is donating a portion of the sales to them in memory of his dear friend.

  • This fragrance sounds so nicely from the review. And I very like the name of it “Forever Friends”. I would very like to try it. Thanks for the draw. I live in Europe.

  • Lovely tribute to a friend from Ida. The words are so beautiful. I have not tried Neil’s fragrances. But would like to. USA

  • Oh Ida and Neil – this is a wonderful tribute and it brought tears to my eyes. Ida, thank you for this wonderful review and article, and Neil friends like you are rare indeed, the love, respect, friendship and kindred spirits you shared are so palpable. I’m so very sorry for your loss, but she will never be far from you, even less so now that you have created this fragrance. A huge, warm heart and true selflessness are what you embody and this fragrance represents these ideals. Thank you for the donation to St. Jude, it really helps more than you know.

Ida, as always, you bring the fragrance to life in your writing and give us both an olfactory and emotional experience. I wish I had been there to live through aldehydic party, but it’s never too late.

Neil, I must get down to your studio this winter or spring. I have no excuses for not doing so, and you are a remarkable Nose and human being as well.

I’m from the North Shore of Massachusetts, USA

  • Ida’s ability to write expressive, yet informative reviews never ceases to amaze me. Forever Friends piqued my curiosity with its unusual combo of bright floral and fruity notes.
Fredda must have been an incredible woman, my condolences to Neil and her family and friends.

I’m yet to discover the full range of Neil Morris’s creations, who knows, FF might become my favourite.

  • Sorry for the loss, what a great review and a personal story. This scent must be amazing, would love to try. Living in EU

  • A wonderful tribute to a courageous soul. This is a heartbreaking inspiration for a scent but also an inspiring one. It’s a touching tribute, where you can have this on and stray notes waft in the air and you think of Fredda and Neil and their friendship.
From Ida’s other piece I thought Izmir would be wonderful to smell.
    I live in NYC

  • NM is one of my personal fave indie perfumers. I have a massive amount of his perfumes and they are all fantastic to way above par (compared to most current mainstream offerings). My faves, since we are discussing gaawjuus flowers is FLOWERS FOR MEN: Lilac or RAINFLOWER. His DARK SEASON is my winter go to “grog” scent! 🙂 However it was AEGEAN that won my heart. I never looked at (or sniffed) an aquatic scent the same again…needless to say: I am dying to try Psychedelic Luau & Rose Vampyr!

What doesn’t appeal to me about Ida’s review (Smooches dah-link!) what touched me deepest was the way she articulated the perfume in how it was a delineation of their depp and (no doubt ancient soul-bond) friendship! The notes read like a veritable duvet of love! Ida’s description was the silken sheath that makes comfy even more inviting!

US resident who is flabbergasted at the thought of one woman who was a muse for Neil (in the stunning Parfum d’Ida which I simply adore to no foreseeable end!!) in the past; now reviewing the latest in his “Hommage Chronicles” (along with Parfum d’Odette) Trilogy. Fabulous f(r)iends in fragrance, both, I salute you Neil for turning grief into soul-stirring beauty and Ida, my dear, your voice is as clear and beautiful as ever!

It’s absolutely wonderful that Neil created a fragrance that represents Fredda. This way, he can share her personality and legacy with those that knew her and those that unfortunately never had the chance for many more years to come. I haven’t tried a Neil Morris fragrance yet, but I read Ida’s starting out article and Izmir is going on my buy list. New Jersey, USA.

  • Long time friendships are so beautiful. But even more beautiful is to dedicate a fragrance to a dear friend. I loved the way Ida broke down the Forever friends into the fragrances that were Fredda’s favorites, like completing parts of a beautiful whole.
I’m not acquainted with all Neil’s perfumes, but I know and love Chasing autumn.
    I’m living in EU.

  • Beautiful article and a great way to pay homage to a dear friend! I would love to try this one based solely on its’ story behind it! No need for notes or anything. The story really caught me.
    I am from EU. Thanks!

  • I love that this new creation is a tribute to friendship that lasts forever. I am also intrigued by the use of aldehydes, a fragrance group I have started to appreciate more over the last few years. I am in the USA.

  • Very beautiful review that brought me to tears. What a beautiful friendship…and what could be more beautiful than to put all the details about the person – what she was and what she liked into perfume to make the memories last forever. God bless you. For me it would be an honour to have the chance to get to know the person at least a little bit through the perfume. I haven’t had the chance to try anything from this house but I promise I will!

  • I love Neil Morris’s fragrances and this sounds like it will be no exception. I also have a lifelong friend so I can really understand how wonderful this must have been for both of them and how sad for them in their earthly separation. How lovely to have created this fragrance in memory of their relationship. Thank you for the review and the generous draw. I’m in the USA

  • How sad the loss of his dearest friend and how blessed she was to have him help her search for treatment. True friendship is invaluable. My condolences for your loss. I love aldehydes, too, but this is interesting with the amount of fruits in it. I’m in USA and have not tried a Neil Morris though I am aware of his prowess and would love to sniff his creations.

  • Michael Prince says:

Ida, great review of Neil Morris Friends Forever. Neil’s fragrant tribute to Fredda is so beautiful and heartfelt…everything about the fragrance sounds lovely. I don’t have a favorite Neil Morris fragrance because I haven’t tried any. I am from the USA.

  • redwheelbarrow says:

What a beautiful tribute to a loved one. I’ve never tried any of Neil Morris’ fragrances and I’m a bit overwhelmed by the number of offerings but this one sounds like a lovely place to start, the plush bed of amber, vanilla, sandalwood, olibanum and benzoin sounds so beautiful. Thank you for the review and the draw. I’m in the US.

  • wallygator88 says:

I find it beautiful that Neil has distilled his memories of his friend and the times that he has spent with her into a fragrance. The choice of notes and their duality are a testament to that.

Thank you for such a poignant review Ida.

  • Ida captured Neil and Fredda’s friendship beautifully with her words! One can be so lucky to have a friendship like this and a fragrance in their memory. My favorite part was: “Fredda adored musky, ambery vanillic fragrances – and Neil lovingly obliged with a plush bed of amber, vanilla, sandalwood, olibanum and benzoin. The murmur of a sheer musk coupled with cedar completes his aromatic tapestry.” Thanks so much for this giveaway and I live in the US!

  • I love old school aldehydic florals so this sounds amazing. I don’t know Neil Morris fragrances very well. I live in the UK

  • Thanks for another great review, Ida! And thanksto Neil, too, for sharing youratory and tribute to your dearest Fredda. I liked this part of Ida’s description -‘If one is of a certain age (and even if you’re not), aldehydes frequently spring to mind when you reflect upon elegance in perfume.’ So true. I loved how Neil featured Fredda’s preference for musky, ambery vanillic in this fragrance. I haven’t sampled any Neil Morris yet so I’m excited for this draw. Thanks! – CA, USA
