Memo Paris Sherwood Review (Juliette Karagueuzoglou) 2023 “Robin Hood and Sandalwood”

Memo Paris Sherwood

Memo Paris Sherwood by Olya Bar

Who doesn’t love a good story about love and adventure? Especially when the stories are the legends of Robin Hood, one of my favorite characters growing up. The obsession intensified when the Robin Hood movie aired in 1991, starring Kevin Costner opposite Alan Rickman, aka the perfect villain. You can imagine the level of my curiosity when I found out the latest Memo Paris Sherwood release drew its inspiration from the Sherwood forest that is well known as the home of Robin Hood, the outlaw of medieval legend, a rebel and a hero. The stories always portray him and his companions robbing and killing representatives of authority and giving the gains to the poor. A fictional character, The Robin Hood ballads were the poetic expression of popular aspirations in north England during a turbulent era of baronial rebellions and agrarian discontent, which eventually culminated in the Peasants’ Revolt of 1381. The popular theme of the free but persecuted outlaw practicing the forbidden hunting of the forest and outwitting or killing the forces of law and order naturally appealed to the common people. The stories were retold generations after. Sherwood Forest, a botanical palace in which each root hides a tender shoot, and each variety of tree surprises with its skin-like bark, formerly occupied almost all of western Nottinghamshire and extended into Derbyshire; today, however, only a few parts of Sherwood forest remain preserved.

Robin Hood or not, this may be among my favorite releases by Memo Paris so far, a creamy, comforting sandalwood that sets softly but surely, enveloping you like a fog. It has captivated me since I first laid my nose on it. The initial spray of Memo Paris Sherwood opens up with a strong and spicy carrot accord mingling with an aromatic pink pepper, but it quickly switches moods, heading into the bright and luminous black currant accord, which adds a jammy facet to the rose. The orange blossom has a honey-like sweetness and brings a perfect dose of golden light, as if you are catching a ray of sun on the skin cutting through the dark greenery of the ancient forest.

The base is smoothed out by the milkiness of sandalwood reigning supreme here. There is something incredibly calming and meditative about this composition, a peaceful feeling you may experience as you enter the forest and immerse in the beauty of nature. It’s sensual, dynamic, transportive, and incredibly grounding.

The perfumer’s words: “I crafted a spicy and captivating sandalwood cream. The deep and mellow woody signature of sandalwood is enhanced by the richness of sensual cashmeran and the precious oakwood.” – Juliette Karagueuzoglou.

I want to draw special attention to the sandalwood and oak accords here, as both deserve their spotlight. Rich and buttery, slightly balsamic, sandalwood is set against the ancient oak trees, and both kinds of wood play off perfectly. Oak trees have played an essential role in the history and folklore of humankind. During the classical era, the leaves of oak trees were used for laurel wreaths to crown champions of events and heroes returning from lengthy journeys and campaigns. In contrast, the oak tree represented different gods and states of life for ancient Celt cultures. Its aroma and composition is truly unlike anything else, and lends its delicious flavors to the wine and various types of liquors many of us enjoy, it also brings its earthy and slightly bitter-sweet aroma balancing out the copious sandalwood.

This fragrance holds many secrets, like the ancient trees in the forest, whispering sweet tales to each other in a language hidden from the human ear. Where is the coveted treasure hidden? Suddenly an arrow flies down the middle of a path lined with blackcurrant buds. It skims past the birch and leaves a pervading trail of sandalwood oil that slips between the leaves, hugs the trunks, and takes advantage of every ounce of quivering air to make its presence known. It points to the destination, leading the way to a fragrance as generously discreet and as gloriously alive as the forest host.

Notes: Carrot Seeds, Black Currant, Pink Pepper; Orange Blossom, Damask Rose, Sandalwood, Oak, Cashmeran.

Interesting how this was created after the forest in the movie Robin Hood. Sandalwood & Oak together sound really good.

  • Sherwood sounds like a beautiful adventure — It doesn’t look like there’s a giveaway but regardless, I wanted to share that Olya’s review has piqued my curiosity. Love blackcurrant and sandalwood both! Hello from Hawaii, USA.

  • Oh wow, this sounds like a walk thruogh a deep forest. I really like black currant in fragrances and am pleased to see it used here. I think fragrances like this are perfect for rainy spring days.

  • I coveted a 1800s copy of the Robin Hood Ballads in my youth and still own the photo copies I painstakingly made of it so that I would have them with me. This sounds like it harks to the same mood as those ballads, and I will be looking into this scent!

this is an amazing combination of rough oak and soft milky sandalwood at the head! the sweetness of the rose and the acidity of the currant is a beautiful contrast. the fragrance sounds very poetic and naturally balanced. Thanks for the wonderful review Olya, I would really like to try this perfume one day.

  • Oh my goodness!!! I absolutely loveee this description and I adore my Winter Palace and Ilha Do Mel and I am completely smitten with a creamy sandalwood and comforting oak with a bit of honeyed neroli and rose. It’s just checking all my boxes! Sign me up! My goodness. Perfect.

  • Carrot seeds, orange blossom, and sandalwood to evoke Sherwood Forest? Black currant and oak seem to fit, but it sounds like sandalwood is the predominate note here. Regardless, I’m curious to give it a smell. Best, Kris from North Carolina, USA

  • Loved this review of Memo Paris Sherwood by Olya. Description of Sherwood Forest, Robinhood’s story, and the accompanying pictures are perfect. I like that it is a calming, meditative perfume – reminiscent of shinrin yoku (or forest bathing, in Japanese). Enjoyed reading about the oak trees too. Thanks for the review and draw. From continental USA.

  • PrincessAnna says:

Few of the notes are exactly my favorite notes in perfumery: orange blossom, which I simply adore, and a jammy Damask Rose, the most beautiful rose scent for me. I do think Memo fragrances are a bit underrated for how good they are.

  • I love Olya’s description of Sherwood as a calm and milky sandalwood with dappled golden light!

  • Regis Monkton says:

I hope to eventually sample this one. It sounds like something I might like.

  • I enjoyed the review on this one from Olya and seeing the perspective of the perfumer was extremely intriguing! Sandalwood is one one of my favorite notes in perfumery and after reading about this composition it one I am going to have to try. Cheers from Texas, USA!

  • I’m always interested in what direction a perfumer takes a new sandalwood fragrance. Sherwood’s carrot note is an interesting point of distinction; I’m sure it’s a wonderful pairing with the creamy facets of sandalwood. I assume the pungent, earthy qualities of the carrot seed also play up that aspect of the foundational oak accord. This is a fun theme and I like how Juliette Karagueuzoglou chose to interpret it.

    I’m in the USA.

  • I do love a creamy sandalwood vibe and the interplay with the carrot seeds (a note I fell for when I first smelled it in “Papyrus Moleculaire”) sounds quite intriguing! Memo Paris is a fabulous house with some fantastic offerings like Russian Leather, so I’d think this would be a more than fitting addition to my small fragrance collection. I’m Netherlands based.
