Perfumes that are deep and dark and sensuous always make me sit up and take notice. But Memo Paris Argentina has me humming “La Cumparsita”. It is sexy as all get-out, but not carnal in an animalic way. Inspired by the passion and mystery of the Tango, there is no doubt that a voluptuously confident rose is leading this dance. The design of the bottle pictures the passing of the flower between two hornero birds (the national bird of Argentina and Uruguay). Hornero birds are dull in color but are famous for their songs. The rapid trill is part of their mating duet… much faster in the male and slower in the female and their wings beat at their sides at the same rate as their singing and evoke the magic realism of one of the most famous literary works of our time, One Hundred Years of Solitude, by Gabriel Garcia-Marquez.

One of the first recorded uses of the word Tango in Argentina was in the late 19th century. It is believed to be a mixture of the Cuban dance habanera, the Argentine milonga, and the Uruguayan candombe. Memo Paris Argentina conveys the perfect rhythm and raw passion of the Tango as opulent rose is locked in a fervent embrace with  resinous oud, surrounded by the flowers of magnolia and jasmine in full bloom. There is a pink pepper note in the opening, which lends a green astringency. It reminds me of the traditional Mate, which is one of the most popular drinks in the region. It is made from Yerba Mate, infusing the water with a slight bitter green flavor similar to the green tea.  Although the fragrance’s initial impression is loud and vibrant, upon touching the skin it slowly mellows into a soft, slightly soapy floral laying on a bed of woods, as if completely spent by the passionate dance.

When wearing Memo Paris Argentina, I imagine being ushered into an underground lounge where black velvet benches line the walls, whispers of conversations swirl in the candlelight, and cocktails are being poured into the crystal flutes glistening on the mahogany bar. Everything around me is a deep shade of crimson. I feel like a voyeur  as I watch the lone couple on the dance floor, oblivious to all others in the smoky club and moving in such a way that the pleasure of their embrace is indistinguishable from the pain of separation. Memo Paris Argentina is the scent of a dangerous but oh so seductive attraction.
