Kelly Jones, Founder of KELLY+JONES has been on a creative bender of recent. Her Mezcal Collection debuted in 2018 and she has been adding to it over the last couple of years. I admit to being smitten by the collection, and today I present  the new Mezcal Flora.

Mezcal’s appeal comes from the back stories the brands tell about the villages and people who distill the spirits and the taste. “Mezcal” translates to “oven-cooked agave.” Agave takes eight to 30 years to mature, and there’s no machine that harvests them, so it’s all manpower. With such an artisanal spirit it explains why it often costs more than tequila. When describing Mezcal, the most recurring descriptor would be their signature smokiness. And, predominantly so for the uninitiated. But the better mezcals are certainly not a one-dimensional spirit. Notes of sugar, herbs, salt, fruit, and citrus come into play.

Mezcal is witnessing impressive growth. With just under 900,000 cases exported to the U.S. in 2022, that is up from 57,000 cases in 2012. And it is associated as an upscale product averaging more than $40 a bottle at retail, second only to single malt Scotch in terms of the highest average price per bottle.

Kelly + Jones’s Mezcal Collection was developed in the mountains of Oaxaca. Blended with fifty essential oils and naturals, all are hand-poured and contain a “tequila accord” – a thread of scent containing the rich aromas of the heart of the agave. The label, made from eco-friendly paper is fully compostable, and biodegradable. The perfumes are specially created to pair with various varietals of Mezcal.

So how did Mezcal Flora come to be? It was over the Spring of this year that Kelly traveled to Mexico City seeking inspiration for a new fragrance. She found it in the city’s famous flower market. Her desire was to capture the essence of sipping mezcal while taking in all these incredible aromas.  I must preface that floral notes are not generally associated with mezcal, but there are a small number of brands that do, and they are worth seeking out. So, I was intrigued by how Kelly would interpret this. I  had nothing to fear, Mezcal Flora, is an enrapturing fragrance that is at once addictive, sensual, and smoky which encapsulates this experience in a bottle.

Kelly and Jones Mezcal Flora opens with a delicious creamy tequila rose note of fresh strawberries with a hint of pink pepper floating here and there. There is jasmine, not indolic which is as soft as a whisper, balanced with a subdued and powdery suede musk.  There is a hint of petrol floating about interacting with a luxurious leather jacket note that envelopes the dry down.

Unlike Anejo who is like your assertive friend, Blanca who is like your best friend, Kelly and Jones Mezcal Flora is your poised and collected friend. An enrapturing fragrance that is flowery, dreamy, and feminine. Class in a bottle.

Notes: Tequila Rose accord, Suede Musk, Saguaro Blossom, Pink Pepper, Petrol

Editor’s Note: For Kelly, the most beautiful aspect of the story of mezcal is its link to the culture of Oaxaca, and Mexico – the indigenous history of the spirit, the spiritual and religious influences in its creation, and the families working to keep their traditions alive. So she will donate a portion of every Mezcal Flora Eau de Parfum sale to Programa Vaca, the Mexico-based organization that is helping to rebuild the country’s earthquake-affected rural areas with sustainable architecture and natural materials, for long-term, positive human impact. I think it’s interesting that Kelly Jones wanted to release a fragrance which is inspired by how nuanced a higher-quality mezcal tastes along with a lot of floral scents to accompany the mezcal. I’d like to try Mezcal Flora. I’m sure I don’t have anything like it in my collection and it does seem like something I might like. Also, I like when Hernando describes Mezcal Flora as “an enrapturing fragrance that is at once addictive, sensual, and smoky which encapsulates this experience in a bottle.” I live in the U.S.A.

I love how Hernando described Mezcal Flora as “an enrapturing fragrance that is at once addictive, sensual, and smoky which encapsulates this experience in a bottle.” I live in NJ

  • Kelly and Jones Mezcal Flora sounds so fun! There are so many perfumes inspired by whiskeys, but I believe this is the first time I’ve come across one inspired by Mezcal! I love that there’s a petrol note in this perfume: I’d love to smell it!
    I’m in WV, USA

  • What a lovely story of inspiration and investing in the community. This sounds really special and now I’m need to investigate mezcal, too. The photos and the story reminds me of my desire to visit Mexico and Oaxaca. This perfume will have to do until then. I certainly can use a collected friend! In the us.

The notes of Mezcal Flora have me so excited to smell it. Thank you for sharing your experience with this perfumer, Hernando! I love learning about new fragrance makers, and mezcal is such an interesting inspiration for a perfume line. Hope I can experience it soon enough! Also, I’m in the US and eligible for that giveaway.

  • Hernando surely delivers great reviews.
Kelly + Jones is a fragrance house that got me hooked since I tried Chardonnay. The quality they offer is just out of this world.
Mezcal Flora surely makes me remember when I used to visit Mexico every vacation I had with my parents. I remember the first time I tried mezcal, I was overblown by the flavour of it, it was too much for me at the time, but the second time was when I appreciated it better.
The notes of creamy tequila rose, the jasmine and the suede musk surely makes this fragrance an amazing experience.
    USA here.

  • I’m def not the poised and collected friend, so I could certainly use one in at least a perfume. I’m really starting to enjoy floral scents now too. In maryland.

  • I was never a tequila fan until I tried some high quality mezcal made in Mexico. The complexity and abundance of flavors was a revelation. Mezcal Flora seems to embrace the intricacies of the liquor by exploring the floral notes. The flower notes along with the smoke and petrol sounds like an elegant yet feminine fragrance. I’m in the US.

  • I didn’t realize agave took such a long time and hand harvesting. I would love to see Mexico City through Kelly’s eyes. That opening with the rose and strawberries sounds so divine. I’m going to view the Holiday 2022 video, I think I missed that as I was out of town. Nice of Kelly to donate to the rural earthquake victims, they probably get overlooked. Thanks for the chance. USA.

  • The Mezcal Collection fragrances have been on my to-try list for ages; I really enjoy mezcal, the concept has lots of room for experimentation, and the label designs are lovely. Mezcal Flora seems like a particularly surprising juxtaposition of smoke, fruit, and flowers. I had already been wondering if the combination reads similar to some smooth leather florals, and then Hernando described the petrol note like a luxurious leather jacket. Really intriguing blend.

I’m in the USA. Thanks for the review!

Loved the inspiration behind this fragrance. I really enjoyed the informational on mezcal and the “sugar, herbs, salt, fruit, and citrus” in quality mezcal. Beautiful description of the notes in Mezcal Flora and very interested in the petrol note.

Oh man this sounds really good. I love the whole Mezcal line, especially the Anejo (assertive friend!). I love how all of Kelly Jones’ lines are related to an alcoholic interpretation. I’d love to see how the jasmine plays in this one. Thank you for the draw. From the US.

  • Thanks for the nice review Hernando.

I’m really surprised about the thought that the brand puts into not only it’s fragrances but the impact that the sales of the fragrance has. It is nice to see Kelly donated part of the proceeeds.

Florals and mezal are not a combination that I would have thought would have gone together, but it seems to work i nthe fragrance. I truly find the tequila rose accord to be quite fascinating and adding in the saguero blossom just elecates it.

I hope that this fragrance does well.

    Cheers from WI, USa

I loved Hernando’s review of Kelly and Jones Mezcal Flora. Inspired by travels in Mexico City this floral fragrance featuring Mezcal a note that I truly love that is not used often in perfumery. It also sounds really interesting with the Petrol note. The Tequila Rose note that smells like fresh strawberries and pink pepper also sounds very interesting. I am from the USA.

  • Mezcal and tequilla are some of my favorite spirits. I love the idea of creating perfumes around their disitinctive aromas and qualities. I’m in the USA.
