Jorum Studio Arborist Review (Euan McCall) + Ode to the Virideer Draw

Jorum Studio Arborist review

Perfumer Euan McCall and his partner Chloe Mullen launched Jorum Studio in 2019 after a decade of formulating fragrances for other brands. Handcrafted in small batches using the finest raw materials, Jorum Studio fragrances are evocative of the iconic Scottish landscape, but use materials conscientiously so as not to endanger protected native plants. Although Scotland is widely identified with single malt whiskey, bagpipes, shortbread, and kilts—Jorum Studio is showcasing a different view of the country, producing aromas in their Edinburgh studio that are odes to a Scotland as experienced by artisans who live there.

The legend of the Virideer

Jorum Studio Arborist is an “ode to the Virideer, a Scottish term for a keeper of woodland, a representation of the mythological Green Man. Found in many cultures from many ages around the world, the Green Man is often related to nature deities. In some cultures, he is the inspiration for artists; in others, the Green Man is a symbol of rebirth, by way of new growth in the springtime. Carvings of the Green Man have been found in Cyprus, Iraq, and Britain, with sculptures found in Lebanon that date back to the 2nd century. Typically, the Green Man is represented by a man’s face peering out of dense foliage. He might have leaves instead of hair, or a leafy beard.

“My late uncle was estranged from my father’s family and shortly before his untimely passing he reconnected with the family. I was quite young at the time but my only memory of him is a lasting one. He was a tree surgeon (or arborist) by trade and put simply, he was a nomad, travelling from one forest to the next. In my youth, my father used to drag me hillwalking and one time we visited my uncle. The place my uncle has laid down some roots was in the highlands of Scotland, neighboring a whisky distillery. I will never forget the experience of visiting him in his nomadic dwelling, undulating live malting aromas wafting from distillery and the smell of my uncle’s habitat and surrounding.  Arborist revisits this encounter – a distillation of this memory.” -Euan McCall on his inspiration for Arborist

There is something feral about Jorum Studio Arborist. It opens with a boozy, woodsy, musky burst, smoky and leathery notes rushing to fill any gaps in a potent swirl of scent. It warms quickly on the skin, an initially camphorous effect settling into something much more sensual. There’s a duality to it—like a calloused hand cradling a flower.  Arborist has the feel of a resinous and pine-y woodland as it emerges out of the mists, damp soil and fallen trees offering shelter to a multitude of woodland creatures. A stag raises its proud crown of antlers, then rubs them against a tree trunk, its light snorts masked by the sound of unseen, rushing water in a nearby spring. The Virideer, Green Man, and/or Arborist would feel at home in this setting, just as Jorum Studio Arborist melds seamlessly with skin—a familiar, musky, well-worn leather, and smoky woods scent.

Notes: Quince, Honey, Saffron, Osmanthus Absolute, Magnolia, Burdock, Papyrus, Mugwort, Rose Absolute, Tuberose, Myrrh Absolute, Spruce Resin, Douglas Fir, Labdanum, Jatamansi, Malt, Lichen.

  • This looks interesting enough! A tree in a bottle!
Thanks for the review and for the draw! I am in EU.

  • Jorum has interested me for some time, however I admit I haven’t had a chance to sample yet. As someone with some Scottish blood in me, I probably should! Booze and woods and musk – yes please! this sounds wonderful. I am from Canada.

  • I like how this fragrance is an ode to Virideer, to Green Man, to nature itself! Many thanks from Europe!

  • KMBfragrance says:

I love green fragrances, so the idea of a fragrance that harkens to the forest is very appealing. I haven’t tried any Jorum Studio fragrances. I live in the USA

  • What a great story! I love the idea of the green man. I have seen his image before but did not know the story or idea behind him. What a great memory to build a fragrance from. In the USA

  • Arborist has a unique blend of flowers, botanicals, resin, wet wood, and surprising forest fruits which is fabulous. “Arborist has the feel of a resinous and pine woodland as it emerges out of the mists” that’s a wonderful description. These ingredients are unique. I’d love to have it one day. Greetings from Bosnia and Herzegovina.

  • Enough tumblers of highland scotch and you will see that green man when you look in the mirror. You may even see 2. Sounds like a nice complex fragrance that I would enjoy.
    Hello from NY

  • I enjoyed reading about Mr McCall’s uncle and how his memories of him helped inspire Arborist. The quince and burdock notes has my interest piqued. Thanks for the opportunity to sniff! Mich USA

  • I enjoyed the description of the fragrance’s dual nature along with its inspiration. Euan’s description of his time spent with his arborist uncle was quite touching – this is such a wonderful tribute to that relationship and days in nature. So far, my favorite creation from Jorum Studio is Trimerous, but I still have a few more to try. I am in the USA.

I love the simile of “like a calloused hand cradling a flower.” Dalya’s made me imagine this scent as a playful juxtaposition of opposites–sweet florals like magnolia, rose and tuberose balanced against more masculine firs and resins. I enjoyed hearing about the memory that McCall was trying to evoke and the cultural specificity of a Scottish experience played off of the more universal idea of the Green Man. I have been reading about Jorum fragrances for some time but have never tried one. This is surely the one I would want to start with. I am in the US, in North Carolina.

  • Dubaiscents says:

I’ve enjoyed a lot of Euan’s work especially his scents created for Senyoko. I never realized this one had a malt whisky note and why it would (great story about the estranged uncle). I would love to try this. Thank you. US

  • First and foremost, hats off to endangered species protection.

Secondly, my most favorite author is now working on a series centering on — guess what — the Green Man (but based on Russian tales). In any case, personification of the deep green in perfumery draws me in.

And then the notes of Aborist itself: wood, fir, lichen (the Green Man himself), honey and quince (the fruits and nectar he gave to the protagonist – the ‘son’ of the Green Man), smoke (the fire set to unsuccessfully conquer the woods), leather (gears of the villagers trying to conquer the woods) …

    I”m based in Thailand!

  • Forgot to discuss the favorite Jorum Studio fragrance in my previous comment!
Haven’t had the chance to try any (sadly), but based on the notes, I think I’d love Athenaeum (Ink!!!), Fantosmia (black pepper! Shiso!!!), and Aborist (the Green Man!)

  • mmm … musky, smokey woods … if i can’t get away in person, perhaps i can at least *smell* like i’m somewhere else (less urban) ?

    harper (usa)

  • I defnitiely love green scents and I think Jorum studio have an unique approach. I have tried some of their psychoterrica perfumes in the past and they are great! Would love to try this one!! Living in the EU

  • I’d love to experience Arborist with an accompanying sip of whisky. Those Scottish woods are on my wish list to visit and explore one day. Smoky woods in perfume call my name!

“except for the EU”? That’s a new one. I’m not sure what the Brexit means for Switzerland (Europe, but not EU) here, but I’m in, thank you for the draw!

A house that I am not familiar with but I am curious and interested to find out more about this house and perfumer. Thanks a lot from the UK

  • The magical forest Dalya describes us right up my alley and judging by the notes, I think I would love this!! I unfortunately have not tried anything from this house yet, so I don’t have a favorite… yet! I will be checking out the house now thanks to this review 🙂 Thank you! I’m from USA

  • doveskylark says:

I loved this line from Dalya’s review: “There’s a duality to it–like a calloused hand cradling a flower.” Gorgeous writing! I just love anything that recalls a forest, especially damp soil. The inspiration behind Arborist–Euan McCall’s uncle–made me weep a bit. I am a drifter and a wander, but deep down I long for roots.
I haven’t tried anything from Jorum Studio.
    I live in the USA.

  • Bryant Worley says:

Dalya used the words “feral” and “burst”, which was all it took to raise my eyebrows – “There is something feral about Jorum Studio Arborist. I don’t have a favoriteJorum fragrance, but after perusing the website, I will be sampling: Medullary-Ray, Nectar, Trimerous, Psychoterratica Ii, and Psychoterratica III.

I live in Waldorf, MD, USA.

  • There is something about Jorum that makes me so curious about their fragrances. The description makes me think Arborist is raw, pure, green and woody, very natural and unrefined. CA, USA

  • Interesting review.
I have not tried any from Jorum Studio.
What a amazing perfume with boozy, woodsy, musky burst, smoky and leathery notes!!
    from Armenia

  • Dalya’s review made me want to wear this fragrance into the woods and meet the green man for myself. I follow Jorum Studios on Instagram and love everything they do. I am in the US.

  • Julesinrose says:

OH do I want to try this fragrance!! I have a special place in my heart for the Green Man myth as when I was a tattoo artist I worked on a series of large tattoos with that as its main focus and they were highlights of my career. On top of that, all the notes listed and the description delight me! Something feral in the woods – i want to meet it. And after I leave this comment, I’m going to check out this house on Luckyscent as I am unfamiliar with this house. In Maine, USA

  • Danu Seith-Fyr says:

I am not eligible for the draw, but will leave my comments for Dalya, very nicely written work of an exceptional perfume, as I am extremely familiar with the archetype of The Green Man, Cernunnos, Herne the Hunter, I was more interested in Dalya’s experience. It was delightfully written, Arborist is a perfume that I treasure and one of Euan’s creations that fits me like a glove. All his perfumes are beautiful but Arborist holds a very special place in my Pagan Soul.

  • Wow, this sounds as a living breathing forest, full of trees, leaves, flowers, sap, soil. I would love to wear it and become into a Virideer. Thanks for the opportunity.
    Regards from Mexico.

  • “Like a calloused hand holding a flower,” wow what a great description! Beautiful review. I’ve never tried this house’s offerings, but I’d be interested in this fragrance. I live in Connecticut, USA.

  • Great article from Dalya. I was curious when I read this was a feral fragrance. I am always looking for something that my collection lacks and Feral is definitely missing!

What piqued my interest was the part where Dalya explained that Arborist has the feel of a resinous and piney woodland as it emerges out of the mists with damp soil and fallen trees offering shelter to a multitude of woodland creatures… This sounds like something I simply must have.

I have had some samples from a colleague who has Psychoterratica II and Psychoterratica III. They are outstanding natural perfumes and I would like to share Arborist with him in return.

    Greetings from the UK!

  • The Scottish forests are incredibly beautiful and I just can imagine how evokative Arborist will smell. I also like the personal story behind the perfume. I really enjoy Fantosmia which is unlike anything else and this just sounds wonderful. Need to smell more from Jorum Studio! Marit UK

  • You had me at “feral” with this one–especially with a name like Arborist! I have heard nothing but good things about Jorum Studio–and a lot of them as of late–so although I have tried exactly zero of this house’s current lineup, I am quite certain that a blind buy would be a safe purchase. Now I am off to read the other linked reviews–Cheers! (Tulsa, Oklahoma)

  • GennyLeigh says:

Given the inspiration for Arborist, I can believe the scent is described as feral. I’ve read some terrifying stories about the Green Man. The notes sound both woodsy and somehow delicate with the osmanthus, quince and magnolia. The fragrance seems composed with a lot of attention to detail and care. Ive not tried any Jorum Studios scents. Commenting from MD, USA.

  • “ boozy, woodsy, musky burst, smoky and leathery notes” is all I needed to see. Never tried anything from this house as of yet. Indiana USA

  • This sounds wonderful and intriguing! I love a woody forest scent, and I love that this sounds like a trip to Scotland. So evocative! I don’t know this house, but the bottle is lovely. I’m in NYC.

  • Dalya’s review makes this fragrance sound deep and rich, boozy and smoky are two of my favorite notes. Have never tried any fragrances from Jorum Studio. I live in Western United States.

  • I love the idea of mysterious and mystical forests, and mysterious forest beings. And actual forest smells— I enjoy them. I have not tried any Jorum scents. (USA)

  • I liked how personal this scent is to Euan McCall. I imagine that this could make it very unique, but feel very true. I’m curious to try it. I have a favorite that he made for another line, but I don’t have a Jorum Studio favorite yet. I live in the USA.

  • This fragrance sounds ultra forestry and very very appealing. I would love to wear it and feel I’m in Scotland. I really like that they do not endanger protected plants, they are true Arborists in Jorum Studio.

I love the inspiration and enjoyed picturing his uncle’s home in the woodland next the the distillery. I’ve been curious about this house but have never had a chance to try any of it’s offerings. This fragrance sounds really interesting. Thank you for the draw. I’m from the US.

  • I think what appeals to me about Studio Arborist based on Dalya’s review, is the description of boozy and woodsy note – how lovely! I have not had the opportunity to try out any fragrance of Jorum Studio, so I do not have a favorite yet.
    Thank you from Canada!

  • A smoky woods scent which is musky and has a well-worn leather scent is right up my alley. I liked Dalya’s review of Jorum Studio Arborist perfume, especially where she evokes the Green Man, reminding me of Radagast and the Ents from Lord of the Rings. It’s so true, as Dalya points out, that trees have been deified in many cultures from times immemorial. As the summer months arrive, it would be lovely to have a perfume that is reminiscent of woods and wildlife. Unfortunately, I haven’t tried anything by Jorum Studio, yet, but this would be a good one to break the spell with. Thanks for the charming review and the draw. I’m in the USA.

  • Arborist has some wonderul and intriguint notes. I would love to try it! I am sure it will be a different experience!

  • wallygator88 says:

Thank you for the beautiful review Dalya!

I love hearing about these kinds of green fragrances and this seems to have such a beautiful story connecting the notes.

Reading this review already takes me to Fangorn Forest from the Lord of the Rings. I imagine one of the hobbits wearing this fragrance while riding on top of the Ent.

I have not smelt this house and need to sample the fragrance.

    Cheers from WI, USA

  • I think that Euan McCall’s story about his uncle is interesting, i.e. I found it interesting that someone chose to live the lifestyle that Euan’s uncle lived; it seems like a simple, non-materialistic lifestyle. When I read the review for a previous fragrance release from this perfumer, and this fragrance house, I was very interested in trying it; I hope that I get to try that one and this one. According to the list of notes, this fragrance seems very interesting to me; it seems like one that I could learn some things from. I live in MD., U.S.A.

  • I love fragrances that smell like the woods, so this sounds wonderful. I’ve never sniffed any Jorum Studio fragrances. In in the U.S. Thanks for the draw!

  • Scent memories are so fascinating to me. I love that he has used a memory for his inspiration and named it for his uncle’s work. I’m in the US.

  • flosolentia says:

I love leather scents and the fact that leather is intertwined with sensuous herbs and flowers here attracts me very much. It must be wild and sensual because of the animalic notes. I am from Moscow, Russia

  • I am just now hearing about Jorum Studio. This particular review of Arborist couldn’t have been a better introduction. Pine, Fir, Magnolia…this sounds like heaven to me. Thanks for the draw!

    From Canada

  • Wow, I don’t think I’ve ever seen a fragrance described as feral before! I love your way of describing it as “There’s a duality to it—like a calloused hand cradling a flower. ”
It sounds like a really interesting scent with spices and resinous notes.
    I live in the USA.

  • Courtenay COURIER says:

I enjoyed Dalya’s review as I felt I could smell a story in time and it intriuges me greatly. I am in Canada.

  • I recently discovered Jorum Studios but unfortunately haven’t had a chance to sample yet, it’s definitely on my radar.
Waiting for my Norne to arrive, I’ve been delving deep into Forest scents this Spring- I would love to win this bottle.
    I’m from Canada

  • MissJanners says:

I enjoyed the description of Euan McCall’s uncle’s nomadic tree surgeon lifestyle. The notes of Arborist seem quite unusual, and I’m interested to see how the Scottish landscape translates as a fragrance. I haven’t sampled anything from Jorum Studio.

    I’m from Canada.
