New Orleans inspired perfumes

Hez Parfums 504 Extrait was the perfect fragrance for me on a cloudy, rain-forecasted afternoon; it was one of those slow days where the humidity hangs in the air like a promise, and within seconds, I was someplace between my closet and the French Quarter. 504 opening is immediate and impassioned. Calabrian bergamot glimmers, nuanced, and slightly floral; a hint of spice weaves through playfully. It’s that first spray that makes me take a deeper breath, and I realize this perfume absolutely gets me just as I get it. A few pulses in, as it warms on my skin, an unexpected yet entirely harmonious note emerges, basil. It adds a trace of green crispness, a little peppery, and fresh.  While adding complexity and depth to the citrus, giving the whole fragrance an unexpected edge that’s playful and stylish. Bitter orange, with its versatility, is warmer and more rounded, with that amber imbued depth that makes it feel like a golden sunset. Together, these top notes make a graceful transition, effervescent and alive, teasing me to stay for the middle.

Hez Parfums 504 unfurls into its heart, velvet bourbon vanilla and orris butter weaving into something indulgent and sensory, and the ambiance is thick with creativity. There is a creaminess here that is slow and opulent, a sophisticated, boozy note, gratifying, with that feeling of settling into a favorite chair. The orris butter adds a powdery, floral soil richness, giving the vanilla depth and complexity. It’s rich but elegant; people around me lean in, not because it’s loud, but because it feels like a quiet friend.

Underneath that lush center, a deeper, woodier pulse murmurs. Texas cedar brings an earthy, lived-in warmth, a sun-warmed porch’s wood, and the comfortable weight of a well-loved book. Thai oud adds a subtle, resinous, smokiness, with a leathery whisper under current, suggestive rather than aggressive; it is 504’s shadow, the thing that gives it a hint of enigma. The drydown is soft; an enduring white musk smooths the edges; oakmoss lends a subtle forest-floor dampness; and ambergris adds a tasteful whisper, layering in a unique marine hint of luxury while enhancing the other notes.

Above all, it conjures late-night jazz and alleyway chats, revealing the same exuberant, uninhibited spirit of New Orleans. I appreciate the balance of contrasts in 504; it is bright and effervescent without being frivolous, spiced but not sharp; creamy yet anchored by smoke and cedar. It’s a perfume of dualities that somehow reads as cohesive; this elegance makes it feel alive; it’s not a single statement; it’s an entire conversation. It is a spark that feels both joyous and slightly laid-back. If you know the area code 504, you know what I mean; it smells like New Orleans, equal parts celebration and wistfulness.

There’s also a sensory memory I keep coming back to, walking through the French Quarter as the sun dips: streetlights flick on, a distant trumpet swells, and the air turns from heat to something softer and more suggestive. Maybe I’m romanticizing, probably, but fragrances are, in part, vessels for memory, and Hez Parfums 504 Extrait is particularly adept at conjuring place and mood without veering into cliché. I adore fragrances that evolve, divulging themselves to me slowly, as I discover new details with every wear. 504 is quintessentially New Orleans, spirited yet refined, and just a little mysterious. It invites me to move unhurriedly, pay attention to details, and enjoy each small, radiant moment. As I wear it, I feel both playful and poised, a little daring and wholly myself. If you happen to encounter 504 Extrait de Parfum, I’m curious what stories it will tell you.

Notes: bergamot Calabria, spice, bitter orange, bourbon vanilla, natural Thai oud, orris butter, Texas cedar, oakmoss, ambergris, white musk.

  • I love perfumes that have the power to transport me to another place and time. I’ve never been to New Orleans, but I hope Hez Parfums 504 Extrait will take me there on an olfactory journey.
    I live in the EU.

  • The boozy, jazzy notes would make this the perfect fragrance to wear to a jazz night here in Chicago. I’m in the USA.

  • Aww, New Orleans is where my parents met and fell in love. They said they never found a decent beignets after leaving. My mind is flooded with stories they’ve shared about their time there and this would be a great gift for them if I happen to win. After all, as Sandi wrote, “fragrances are, in part, vessels for memory.”

    I’m in the USA.

  • A sophisticated boozy, spicy, warm and sweet scent that pays tribute to the New Orleans, its bohemian spirit. its mysterious allure, jazz and blues scene. 504 Extrait encapsulates the essence of the Cresent City.

  • The entire description of the journey this fragrance takes for Sandi is what sparked my interest, especially the suggestion of woods and oud. I find that both notes can overpower my nose and the light hand used here sounds perfect. I have only been to New Orleans once, but the scent journey here sounds spot-on! I live in the US.

Hez Parfums is now a house I’m very familiar with by now and the inspiration they draw from it’s very rich and unique to them. I have never had the chance to visit New Orleans but I know the lore behind it. 504 is another addition into the storytelling puzzle that Hez has made of the city. It’s invigorating and at the same time mysterious enough to make the wearer get lost in the feeling of being in the city. Hez really knows the city well and it’s able to continuously create these fragrance inspired by one of the liveliest cities we have especially during Mardi Gras. To many more celebratory festivities in the French Quarter. I’m located in the USA.

what struck me most was how vividly the fragrance captured new orleans without leaning on clichés. the review makes the perfume feel alive — warm, musical, humid, with flashes of spice and mystery — like stepping into the french quarter at dusk. i felt alive just reading it! :). i am in the united states.

  • Sandi’s review beautifully captures not just a fragrance, but a feeling — that blend of nostalgia, rhythm, and soul unique to New Orleans. What instantly sparks interest is the way she translates scent into atmosphere; you can almost hear the jazz and feel the humid air through her words. Her description of the basil note—unexpected yet harmoniously woven—stands out as a parallel to the city’s own contradictions: refined yet untamed, elegant yet alive. It’s evocative writing that celebrates perfumery as storytelling, and it makes 504 feel less like a bottle of perfume and more like a lived experience.

Sandi’s review sparks my interest because it goes beyond a simple list of notes and instead paints a vivid, sensory experience. The way she connects the fragrance to the soul of New Orleans the humidity, the jazz, the contrast of celebration and wistfulness makes it feel like more than a perfume; it feels like a story. I’m particularly intrigued by her description of the unexpected basil note adding a playful edge and how the drydown carries a “hint of enigma.” Her personal memory of the French Quarter at dusk perfectly captures how a great fragrance can transport you. It makes me very curious to experience how the bright, effervescent opening evolves into that creamy, woody, and subtly smoky aura she describes so evocatively.

Thank you for this beautiful review, Sandi!
I didn’t have the chance to try anything from Hez yet, but a heart of orris butter (one of my favourite notes) and vanilla mixed with woody notes…
    Beautiful.
Best wishes to everyone from Germany!

  • Hez Parfums has become a house I’ve grown thoroughly familiar with, and their sources of inspiration remain remarkably rich and distinctly their own. I haven’t yet had the opportunity to visit New Orleans, though I’m well aware of its stories and legends. 504 feels like another piece in the narrative mosaic Hez has crafted around the city, energizing, atmospheric, and just mysterious enough to transport the wearer right into its streets. Their understanding of New Orleans shines through, allowing them to consistently create scents that capture the spirit of one of the most vibrant cities in the world, especially during Mardi Gras. Here’s to many more fragrances celebrating the magic of the French Quarter. Greetings from France.

  • What captivated me about Sandi’s review is how she captures the duality of New Orleans—the brightness and mystery, the celebration and wistfulness all woven together. The way she describes the basil note as unexpected yet harmonious really resonates with me; it’s that same contradiction that makes the city so magnetic. I’m particularly drawn to the bourbon vanilla and orris butter heart she mentions—those are notes that tend to feel indulgent without being heavy, which is exactly what I look for in a fragrance. The balance between the effervescent opening and the woody, smoky drydown sounds like it would evolve beautifully throughout the day. Hez Parfums clearly understands how to translate place into scent.

What a beautiful sounding fragrance! What fascinates me about 504 Extrait is the uplifting effect of this blend and the transporting experience to New Orleans’ enigmatic charm. I find interesting what Sandi said of 504 Extrait “it’s a perfume of dualities that somehow reads as cohesive; this elegance makes it feel alive; it’s not a single statement; it’s an entire conversation.” An olfactive experience to remember, one that you can’t forget.

  • This sounds amazing, I love the other Hez parfums that I have and this one sounds right up my ally.

  • What really grabs me about 504 Extrait, just from the title and the Spirit of NOLA theme, is the idea of bottling New Orleans itself. A perfume built around that city makes me think of humid night air, music spilling out of bars, a mix of sweetness, spice, maybe smoke and florals all hanging in the atmosphere at once. I like when a fragrance is tied to a very specific place and mood instead of just a pretty accord, and this sounds like it is meant to feel lived in and soulful rather than polished and generic.

  • Love the romantic review from Sandi! New Orleans evokes romance, so it is apropos that the perfume it inspires does as well. My favorite line from Sandis’ review was: “a perfume of dualities that somehow reads as cohesive.” As a person with a Gemini stellium (Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars) that is exactly what I look for. I am in the US.

  • Yumm citrus, orange and then oud and booze. Long live jazz. Creator of the perfume seems like a creative head and I would really enjoy trying this. Im from eu.

  • I’ve never been to New Orleans, but the tribute to area code 504, where late-night jazz, blues and history unite, sounds captivating. Greetings from EU.

  • Really liked the review — Hez Parfums “504 Extrait” by Hez Binkowitz sounds like a proper statement scent. The idea of spices and bergamot giving a vibrant top, sliding into a creamy mix of Thai oud, bitter orange and bourbon vanilla, then resting on cedar, oakmoss and musk — that contrast between sparkling brightness and smoky-woody depth feels compelling. If it wears well, I can definitely see this working great for cooler evenings or autumn/winter nights.

  • I like that the scent is bright and effervescent without being frivolous, refined and a little mysterious. Combination of spice, oakmoss and musk spark my attention in this composition. I live in the EU.

  • Reading the notes of 504 is like I am reading a best of list! Really sounds good! I liked when you have said that it’s a perfume of dualities that somehow reads as cohesive and that streetlights flick on, a distant trumpet swells, and the air turns from heat to something softer and more suggestive… nice description. While reading the review, on the back of my mind there was a soundtrack playing a nice jazz tune.

Oh this collaboration sounds like a dream come true!

Hez Parfums 504 Extrait feels like stepping into a moonlit jazz lounge in New Orleans—a swirl of dark rum, banana bread, and spicy cloves floating through velvet curtains and warm wood. The gourmand top notes dance with creamy richness, while smoky woods and soft musk dry-down give it depth and sensuality instead of sweetness. I especially appreciate how it balances decadence with restraint — elegant and sultry, never cloying. I’d love to try 504 Extrait!
    Cheers from WI, USA

  • What a beautifully written review! As someone who has never been to New Orleans- but dreams of going- this review makes me long to try 504 so I can at least go in my mind heart and soul. I love a southern city with history and character,Savannah being a favorite and this reminds me of that in a way. The writing puts me right there. As a perfume collector I also adore how she clearly explains and explores the notes and how they weave and evolve to evoke emotions. Well Done! Love from California, USA.

  • Sandís review is so descriptive it really creates that olfactive picture of this scent unfolding as a day at the French quarter. The brightness of bergamot the vanilla orris mid and the cooler unfurling of musk, cedar and oak moss. I love how this is described as a mysterious unfolding fragrance that causes you to pause and ponder as this fragrance reveals itself to the wearer.

  • What I really liked is the part where Sandi describes the ingredients used(maybe because I also love the ingredients? Haha) But no for real, a lot of descriptive language which made my reading experience very rich in images
    504 Extrait sounds marvelous

  • I love how the fragrance is able to instill memories and Sandi is able to smell it in HEZ 504 EDP❤ The human smell is very powerful! I have visited NOLA 3 different times, my daughter moved to the New Orleans Parish 5 years ago. My son went to his first year of college at LOYOLA. I’d enjoy wearing this fragrance and thinking of my times in NOLA. I Look forward to the scent journey with HEZ.

“it feels like a quiet friend” is a vibe that evokes a very personal and special NOLA – a polar opposite of how many see the city and the French Quarter. It’s almost as if you’ve found a hidden place in the city that no one else knows about, except the locals; like a hole in the wall that has a secret entrance. But to get there, you have to go through the crowd of tourists – a little exciting at first, but before the frustration and irritation arrive, you see signs indicating you’re almost there. Then the vibe like a quiet friend comes to calm you, heart rate returns to normal, fist unclenched, tension is released … This is my impression of 504 Extrait from Sandi’s review. I live in the US.

  • I have never been to New Orleans, but this review of ,504 took me there.
The rare materials sparked my interest and all the oud and oakmoss.
    USA
I have Cafe Beignet from Hez Parfums which is beautiful. I hope this is my next.

  • Creamy anchored by smoke is sounding absolutely like my type. An Orris butter and Thai oud combination is one I think I would really love. I’ve never been to New Orleans but if this fragrance indicates anything about the way it smells then maybe I should plan a trip to visit. I’m in the USA

  • Oh I had no idea David Falsberg was the mentor for Hez! I absolutely loooove his work! His musk and florals are amazing and of course his ouds. I still need to try this house! Well I’m highly motivated now. Everything has been looking amazing, especially the plum one and this one! I am located in California. Thank you for the generous giveaway.

  • Love these notes, would love to give it a smell. Such a unique combination of notes. I’ve been to NOLA a few times and love it. Reading the review makes me want to visit new Orleans again, such a great food scene. Arkansas, USA

  • Fragrances that evoke a sense of place are always an interesting olfactory journey and having New Orleans as the muse is certainly an experience. The homage to the jazz clubs and humid intertwining streets as exemplified by the citrus, spice oud and wood blend sounds lovely. MD, USA

  • I love the description of the spices and jazz being the inspiration. Bitter orange is also a favorite of mine.

    Utah

  • Hez’s use of crisp basil here is really interesting—it’s unexpected along with the deep and opulent heart, like swinging from barbershop splash to rich beast mode. But it sounds like that point of distinction works perfectly and plays off the complexity of the vanilla, orris, and oud. This progression feels like day into night. I haven’t tried any of Hez’s fragrances yet, and 504 sounds like a terrific place to start. Thanks for the giveaway.

    I’m in the USA.

  • The number 504 caught my attention. That number pops up often in my life and oddly my first street address was 504 N Market. I’ve only been to NOLA once and we arrived at the French Quarter for dinner (Gumbo House) at dusk and it was magical. Love those balancing notes for a city so vibrant, yet full of everyday folks. Gorgeous photos for this great article. Thanks for the chance USA.

  • I have never been to New Orleans, but reading this review, I feel like I can smell the boozy, magical nature of the city! I would love to be entered, I’m in the USA 🙂

  • I love New Orleans and love the power of memory in perfume. I think it’s amazing how scents can bring back memories or places. Sandi’s description of her own memory pulls me in as well as her descriptions of the notes and how they work together. This one sounds great!

  • This has all of the crescent city criteria without having to travel. The bright and festive sweetness in the opening. Onto the murky and dark oud, oakmoss, and the orris butter. Winter time wonder finishing it out right having the cedar and ambergris. Don’t know how it wears but from its description and straight forward allure I have one to be on the lookout for in the years to come. Would like to win, from USA.
