Like any artist, perfumers bring their unique history, experiences, and talents to their craft. I like to match perfumers to projects that fit those qualities best. In circumstances where I’m unsure, I lean on the team at MANE to help point me in the right direction. Ugo is always great to work with. He has great instincts and an ability to think outside of the box. He’s great at reading between the lines of a brief and understanding what I’m looking for. I am always excited to receive his submissions, which never fail to impress! – Chris Christiansen, Founder and Creative Director of Gentleman’s Nod

There’s something undeniably captivating about a fragrance that strikes the perfect balance between complexity and boldness. It’s always been about those aromatic, spicy scents with a strong backbone—the kind that leaves an impression without trying too hard. But then came Gentleman’s Nod Passion Poivrée Extrait, and it flipped my expectations on their head. Gentleman’s Nod is a small batch, handcrafted, artisan maker that crafts all their men’s grooming products in an old-fashioned way in Omaha, NE. Their fragrances are currently composed by some of the most renowned perfumers at MANE.

Tangy, juicy, mouthwatering—Passion Poivrée is addictive from the first spritz, a cocktail of tropical heat and barbershop vibes that stays with you long after the initial encounter.

I instantly pictured stepping into a barbershop in the heart of the tropics. The air is heavy with the scent of dark-aged rum, muddled passionfruit, and the unmistakable spice of Timur Pepper—arguably one of the most complex and nuanced peppers in the world. This isn’t just spice for the sake of heat; it’s layered, intricate, and bursting with a citrusy sharpness that sets the tone for what’s to come. Sourced from the Himalayas, it boasts vibrant grapefruit notes complemented by subtle hints of orange blossom, resting on a foundation of exotic fruit flavors. Add saffron to the mix, its golden strands weaving through the jungle essence with an effortless richness, and you’ve got something truly magnetic—a scent that demands your attention but never overwhelms you.

The unique signature of Passion Poivrée comes from the overdose of TIMUR PEPPER NEPAL PURE Jungle Essence ™, which has an intrinsic natural Passion Fruit feeling to me. Paired with a top of Rum JE, it gives the perfect mouthwatering addiction on top of the citrus cocktail. The heart is filled with Saffron and Green Apple while the dry down is a rich leather ambery addiction thanks to the combination of Ambramone™ and Orcanox ™ – Ugo Charron, Perfumer MANE.

Passion Poivrée opens with a zesty burst of citrus—bergamot and lemon zest cutting through with mouthwatering acidity, instantly drawing you in. It’s the kind of citrus that makes your mouth water just thinking about it, bold and unapologetic. Then comes the tropical heart—a verdant, hyper-realistic jungle green that evokes the raw, damp feel of the rainforest and tartness of the passion fruit. There’s a sharp snap of green apple in the mix, that crisp, juicy bite that drips down your chin like the first taste of a perfectly ripe fruit.

But what really draws me to Gentleman’s Passion Poivrée is the way it transitions. From the sharp, fruity opening, you’re drawn into something deeper and more rugged. The Timur Pepper shines here, its peppery-citrus warmth lingering and adding depth. A slight smokiness emerges from a dry vetiver note reminiscent of leather chairs in a barbershop—their freshly polished surfaces gleaming like soldiers in formation. The leather accord brings a subtle elegance to the scent, grounding it in  (IMHO) in something undeniably masculine but never predictable.

Then there’s the Cognac Accord—a decadent finish that elevates the entire composition. It’s a luxurious base that hints at indulgence, while the saffron’s opulence keeps everything in balance, weaving through the fruit and spice like golden silk. This is a scent that doesn’t rely on sweetness to captivate—its richness comes from the interplay of textures and the way each note unfolds with purpose.

Gentleman’s Nod Passion Poivrée is stunningly unique—boozy, tangy, tart, green, aromatic, and yet with zero sweetness to dilute its strength. It’s an ode to Timur Pepper, the perfumes’ star, and the foundation of an olfactory journey that feels fresh and raw. Passion Poivrée is a bold, unapologetic olfactive expression of what modern masculinity can be: complex and endlessly intriguing.

Notes: Rum, Iced Passionfruit, Bergamot, Lemon Zest, Ginger Crystals, Grapefruit, Timur Pepper Pure Jungle Essence™, Saffron, Jasmine Absolute, Green Apple, Cognac Accord, Vetiver, Leather, Benzoin, Ambramone™, Orcanox™.

Reading the notes and complexity, the fragrance just screams masculine. It’s very dark, dense and intriguing. A mix of a fougere with a boozy note thrown in to spice things up and the timur pepper being the star here, Passion Poivrée is undoubtedly a nod to a gentleman. I’ve smelled pepper in other fragrances and although it’s a note not many are fond of, it really lifts the fragrance up and gives it an extra layer of longevity. The 27% concentration is also something to pay attention to as most of the notes in this fragrance are on the heavy side, you really only need 2 to 3 sprays to experience it. The perfumer did his thing with this one. I’m located in the USA.

Olya’s narrative guiding is through the scent journey this fragrance takes the wearer on was eloquent and really gave me a sense on what to expect with this offering. What man doesn’t enjoy a good masculine barbershop fragrance but to add booziness and a tropical twist to it makes this all the more interesting. I’d really like to add this to my collection. Appreciate the generosity of the giveaway. Many blessings from Virginia, USA.

  • Olya’s review really captures the sensory experience of Passion Poivrée in a way that makes you feel the fragrance before you even try it. What strikes me most is how she vividly describes the balance between boldness and complexity, especially with Timur Pepper at the center of it all. The tropical barbershop vibe is such a unique angle—it’s like you can smell the rum, the passionfruit, and that nuanced pepper cutting through. I love how she highlights the transition of the scent from sharp citrus to rugged leather, with a cognac twist that sounds rich but never too sweet. It’s clear that this isn’t just another run-of-the-mill fragrance; it’s layered, textured, and refreshingly unpredictable. That sense of modern masculinity she talks about, where it’s both bold and nuanced, really sells the idea that this is a fragrance with depth and character. Makes me want to experience it firsthand!

  • Wow, this sounds like a great fragrance, with so many notes i love in one. The peppery spicy with the barbershop citrus, boozy and fresh, and the hints of passionfruit. Sounds perfect. And I enjoyed Olya’s story of the story behind the scent. Thank you for the review and the draw. In the us.

  • Olya’s review of Passion Poivrée Extrait by Gentleman’s Nod immediately grabbed my attention with its vivid description of the Timur Pepper note. The idea of blending this pepper with tropical fruits and rum to create a barbershop-meets-tropical-jungle vibe is intriguing and bold. I’m particularly drawn to the pepper’s complex grapefruit-like sharpness combined with the leather and cognac base—definitely a unique olfactory journey! I would love to experience this scent myself.

  • I love when a small house picks one fantastic natural ingredient and goes for it! A semi-soliflore or an Inspiration derived from it and we all get to really delve into that unique wonderful find. This sounds amazing. I love the high concentration too. I’m all nose! lol I am in California.

  • A “boozy, tangy, tart, green, aromatic” sounds very interesting. Particularly if it’s an “ode to Timur Pepper.” The fragrance sounds as if it has a little of everything. A fruity opening, smokiness from vetiver, a leather accord, a cognac accord. Olya does describe this as indulgent. USA.

  • Now this looks like quite an interesting fragrance. The combination of barbershop elements with booze and leather is very intriguing. I am not sure I have ever experienced timur pepper before, but it appears to play a critical role in the transition of this fragrance – using its light and dark sides to bridge the gap between the bright citrus and fruit opening to the rich and boozy base. I have not explored Gentleman’s Nod before, but I have read quite a bit about them as of late. I will have to check them out and order some samples. Best of luck to all. I live in NC, USA.

  • Instantly what stood out about Olya’s review is her mention of zero sweetness. In an age where sacarin laden concoctions rule the mainstream markets, it’s refreshing to hear that Ugo could come up with a formula that includes bezoin and a rum accord, yet manages to keep the sweetness at bay. I’m a huge fan of barbershop fougeres it’s true so I’ve been eyeing the brand for a while now but this must be a new addition to the collection since this is the first time I’m hearing about it. Very intrigued with the contrasting accords and dynamic transitions, especially the humid tropical fruits which immediately bring to mind fragrances from Daniel Josier’s Renier lineup. Never smelled timur pepper in a perfume so this would be a first. But if it really is that complex, then it seems I’ve been missing out! Sounds like a great one for the autumn!

  • David Furman says:

This is a unique blend of rich notes that make a semi tropical forward blend. The opening of rum and ripe passion fruit is quite interesting. I don’t have any experience with this company but I have high expectations for them. I’ve read up on several releases and they all have different strong points. From Jacksonville, NC.

  • Passion Poivree Extrait sounds unique. I don’t recall another fruit centric fragrance that so prominently features a pepper note. I’ve eaten timur peppers but have never smelled the note in a fragrance. The bright citrusy heat seems to marry well with the citrus and passion fruit notes. The rum and cognac accords along with leather adds some elegance and smoothness. I’m in MD, USA.

  • What jumps out to me is that Passion Poivrée is a journey in a bottle from Citrus to the jungle, and Timur Pepper scented barbershop and closing out with a fine Cognac. It’s like a cheerful Joseph Conrad novel.

  • Christiansen’s approach to wet shaving scents is different than a lot of artisans in the wet shaving space, working with other perfumers to fit his briefs. His collaboration with MANE seems to be fruitful; I believe the last few have utilized their compositions. I expected tangy passionfruit from the Passion Poivrée name, but some of the other materials are a surprise, making for a boozy tropical medley in lush green rainforest. The Timur Pepper sounds intoxicating—citrusy, floral, fruity heat—and the saffron, green apple, vetiver, and leather combination in the dry down also sounds wonderful. Really interesting design with lots of progression. Sounds like a blast to wear.

    I’m in the USA.

  • Intrigued by the tangy fruit accord mixed with leather and cognac. I love spicy, peppery fragrances and this one sounds like a winner. Sounds in your face, complex, and the way a bold man or woman should smell!

This sounds like another great fragrance coming from Gentlemen’s Nod. The article mentions that Passion Poivree is a perfect balance between complexity and boldness. This definitely intrigued me. The visual of a barbershop in the middle of the tropics sparked my curiosity.

Also the transition from fruity to peppery & smokiness really caught my attention. Add that cognac accord, wow!
